Warm congratulations and greetings!

PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT CHAIR

The past year has brought many changes and challenges into our lives - as individuals, as a nation, and simply as members of the global village. I hope that we have adequately prepared you to rise to these challenges and discern how to properly respond to changes that still have many spinning in confusion and/or frustration. Many, if not most of you must be feeling relief and possibly elation at finally being able to say, “I did it! I completed my BA/BS Psych degree!” At last the exams are over, papers done, requirements passed. You can finally see your destination at the end of the long and sometimes winding road that you have travelled for the past four or so years. As the next stage of your life begins, you then slowly realize that the road has not really ended – and that instead you have now come to a fork and you must decide on which direction to take. Whatever you choose – whether it involves additional schooling towards becoming a professional in Psychology, Law, Medicine or some other field; or whether you decide that you’ve had it with school and now want to go out into the world and do some ‘real’ work, may you take with you the values that we have tried our best to impart during your brief stay with us. First, while excellence is important, of greater importance is doing your best while always maintaining integrity and honor in all your actions and thoughts. Second, scientific inquiry is the bedrock upon which proper practice rests. Third, practice is made meaningful only when we use our talents, skills and knowledge to improve the lives of our people. Fourth, rationale and logical reasoning framed within a broad and liberal perspective that respects differences and others’ right to be, must always take precedence over irrational, myopic and emotion-driven decisions and behaviors. Finally, no matter how difficult or complicated life appears to be, always remember that every experience can be tagged as a ‘learning experience,’ and what is most important is that we learn from experience and avoid repeating unconstructive patterns of behaviors and ways of thinking. May you always retain the energy and enthusiasm that you showed during your stay with us, and despite the noise and distractions that seem to be permeating human society at this time, may you always be able to properly discern what is truly important in life.

MESSAGE FROM THE MANDALA ADVISER Danielle P. Ochoa, MA

Dear Mandala XVII,

MANDALA FACULTY ADVISER

Congratulations! You’ve made it! Now what? Many of you are probably asking yourselves that question. But as I often tell my 118 students, perhaps the more important question to ask is this: so what? So what if you graduated from UP Diliman? So what if you have a degree in Psychology? So what if you graduated with honors? What is it really for? Why does it matter? All of these are achievements in themselves that make all the all-nighters for the seemingly endless readings, papers, and exams worth it. For that, I congratulate you and am proud of you. I have seen most of your grow immensely, getting your feet wet and appreciating learning in Psych 140, going out of your comfort zones and creating stellar research in Psych 118, and exploring and experiencing the possibilities of development in Psych 171. I’m sure many of your professors can also attest to the transformation they have witnessed in you throughout your stay here at the department. But it doesn’t end there. You now have the challenge to make all that achievement, all that growth matter. Make it matter, not just to you and the people close to you, but to the society that you live in. Your degree from UP Diliman Department of Psychology has equipped you to make a positive and meaningful impact with the tools of our science. And remember that our science is (mostly) about people. Whether or not you choose to pursue a career in psychology, remember that people matter. Remember especially that there are people who are not privileged with the same opportunities as you. Create ways to open up opportunities for them too; with this privilege also comes your responsibility. It certainly won’t be easy, but it will definitely be worth it. I believe in you. We, at the department, believe in you. <3 Dani

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Patrizia Adeline A. Lucindo

My dearest Mandala 17,

MANDALA 17 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

After long days of working towards academic excellence and longer nights of performing never-ending organizational, familial, relationship, and god-knows-what duties, we have come to the end of our journey—we have achieved our mandala. Mandala, according to Carl Jung (1973), is the “psychological expression of the totality of the self.” For Jung, it represents the wholeness of the personality corresponding to one’s inner situations. Mandala is also a Sanskrit word which means circle. In Hinduism and Buddhism, it is a ritualistic symbol that perfectly exhibits balance which is used to represent the universe and the vast cosmos. The totality of the self and the perfect symmetrical circle that defines mandala is a perfect analogy for our very own college journey. Of course, this journey was not as easy as we would have wanted it to be. Getting to where we are now entailed effort, persistence, and so much determination. Nevertheless, we recognize that everything — every heartbreak, every all-nighter, every drop of caffeine, alcohol, or both—was worth it. Every single thing that’s happened to us led us to our beautiful mandala. Breathe in the scent of sunflowers—that is the scent of our success. 2017 was our year to prove that sablay is not always a bad thing—that sablay can mean victory, that it can be beautiful, and that it is the ultimate realization of all our dreams. Although each of us has experienced a different journey towards mandala, our shared love for Psychology continually unites us as we, as a batch, can finally say that we made it. May this yearbook be a constant reminder of the struggles we encountered and defeated in the years of our stay in the university. May this yearbook also serve as a remembrance of the concepts we’ve learned, the tasks we’ve accomplished, and the friendships we’ve made. May this yearbook remind us of the fruitful things we can achieve if we put our hearts to it. Years from now, I hope that looking at this yearbook will remind you of how greatness can be achieved with honour and excellence, and passion and persistence. This is it, Mandala 17. We are about to leave one beautiful chapter only to step into another one, and I am a hundred percent sure that we are all ready to go beyond boundaries because we are all made to achieve. Here’s to the mess we made, we make, and we have yet to make—may they all be as beautiful as our mandala. Padayon!

BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Bukluran sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino Buklod CSSP UP ALYANSA TATSULOK - Alyansa ng mga Mag-aaral sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino “You gotta dance like there’s nobody watching, Love like you’ll never be hurt, Sing like nobody’s listening, And live like it’s heaven on earth.” - William W. Purkey She goes through life like her favourite flower—always turned towards the sun. She is positive, steadfast, and grounded. Her optimism is not a weakness, and her generosity is not a flaw. For all her softness, she has withstood countless trials and proven herself to be among the strongest. She knows the value of hard work, knows the challenge of the uphill climb and has conquered it without losing her smile. Somehow, she still looks at the world with wonder and shares this with those she loves. To her friends and family, that is what makes her indispensable, beautiful, extraordinary. That is what makes her Maryanne.

MARNELIE M. AGUIGUID

BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Bukluran sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino

““Taraki” is perhaps the best adjective that would sum up my description of her. Let me then explain by recounting instances when her kinataraki (being taraki) manifested and saved the day. During the times when academic requirements seemed to bury their batch alive and extracurricular activities are squeezed in the jam-packed calendar, her musical skills proved to be convenient. Despite limited time to prepare, she conjures the loveliest melodies and rhythm that befit the themes of celebrated events. Moreover, she can confidently present in front of the crowd whether as a vocalist, guitarist or both without any “pakiyeme.” Her assertiveness and strong leadership skills earned her the moniker “commander” of the batch. Though she has piping voice, she could easily command her batchmates into action. When the situation calls for it, she would issue orders without any hesitations using her firm and unfaltering voice to ensure that the task gets done. When worse comes to worst, she would yell, especially at the playful and inattentive boys, so that the instructions are delivered clearly and effectively. Her mathematical and scientific competence made me think she’d go to a field where these qualities are definitely necessary such as engineering or sciences. I was wrong though. Regardless, I am proud of her accomplishments and how much she has grown as an individual. More importantly, I am proud that she continues to seek to become the better person that she could be.”--- Ms. Rose Kayee

Ina

KATRINA LOISE L. AGUIRRE

BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Psychology Society

There is a saying that goes something like, “You are what you say,” and this can’t be any truer when it comes to Ina. Hearing her say honey is the purest reflection of who she is—probably one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Some would argue that you are not only what you say, but you are what you do as well; Ina still comes out on top regardless. She radiates kindness whatever she does and wherever she goes, most probably in her signature pair of glasses, jeans, and (many) favourite flats. Her care is unbridled and unparalleled, earning her the nickname Mama Inz all throughout high school and college. It is impossible to feel set-aside around her—she makes sure everyone in the group feels involved. She is approachable as can be with her big smile. The key to a gripping conversation with her it to simply bring up Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu, or anything about Philippine television or cinema. She’s got a charm that will keep you captivated for hours on end and wit that will make you enjoy every minute. When it comes down to the wire, Ina is definitely someone you would only ever be fortunate to have in your corner.

Aljibe

PAOLO ENRICO O. ALJIBE

BA PSYCHOLOGY

Paolo Aljibe walks around campus with a laptop tucked under his arm and no backpack. He would climb stairs, ride jeeps, and wave to his friends in his nonchalant way. This easygoing charm is accentuated by his smile and minimal baggage. If only for the fact that he spent so much of his stay in U.P., brandishing a computer like this, the guy has balls. Thankfully, Paolo’s courage makes itself manifest in more ways than just poor day-to-day carry. His consistent, unrelenting honesty puts those around him at ease. While others fuss over appearances, Paolo is quick to launch into his deep, howling laugh when he’s pleased. Never losing grasp of his composure, Paolo doesn’t need to grip too tightly and knows how to have a good time. Whether it’s at the movies or across scratched plastic tables, Paolo has the ability to entertain even the simplest dullard, and make friends with him too. Condensing insights on politics and pop culture into steady conversations comes naturally to Paolo. He can switch up from a steady tirade on his mental health advocacy to an enthusiastic synopsis of his favorite Sam Milby movie without blinking. He’ll talk about what went wrong with the production of any film. He’ll talk about stickers. Whatever the subject, he keeps his candidness. Paolo has balls for speaking and living his truth. The best thing about him is he’ll insist that balls have nothing to do with bravery. And you’ll believe him when he does. (Reyes, 2017)

Kaye

JOANNE KAROL C. ALONZO

BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Psychology Society

“It takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place.” Kaye came across this quote in two different subjects with two different professors. She found this coincidence striking—as if the universe was reminding her of something. She kept the quote close to her heart. She used it as a reminder to strive to become the best that she can be. It also inspiresd her to not to be afraid to set bigger goals and challenge herself. These were definitely not easy to do, but the support from her loved ones strengthened and inspired her to try her best despite the odds. She never would have made it without them! At the end of her college journey, she has realized that it does not only take running to keep her in place—it also takes having others run with her to bring her to where she wants to go.

Gladys

GLADYS FAITH F. ANG-OG

BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Psychological Understanding for Growth and Distinction Society

Gladys is definitely one of the best people one could ever meet. She’s a great friend and anyone should feel honoured to have met someone as good as her because she’s a very rare kind of girl. She’s very persevering with her academics – with a big cup of coffee, of course – manages her time very well, and somehow still has time to watch movies and Korean dramas, which is something she can never study without). There is no doubt that she develops genuine concern for everyone around her because the decisions she make are purely what are best for others even though it might be a bit difficult for her to do. Without a second thought, Gladys would choose to do what is right, keep her principles in check, and put her family and friend before anything or anyone else. Anyone would be happy to have a friend like Gladys, a girl who never fails to keep her feet on the ground with her head up high.

Jerry

JEREMIAH S. ANGAN

BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Track and Field Team UP Astronomical Society

Jeremiah is a student athlete whose passion for track and field never ceased despite the heavy academic load, pressing deadlines, and never-ending exams. This passion started when he was a young boy. His motivation to train everyday comes from the challenges of being physically fit, competing with other athletes, doing something that he is good at, and all the while excelling academically. According to him, running makes his life fulfilling. Due to his busy schedule, he only slept an average of 4 hours per day during college and is looking forward to sleeping for a much longer time after graduation. He is a self-procalimed Star Wars fan and an occasional anime and book enthusiast. He is also an astronomy enthusiast. He loves to go outdoors, and and enjoys going to the beach and climbing mountains. He is also an occasional poet. Admittedly, he has a bias for fluffy German shepherds. He is also fond of collecting running shoes although he wouldn’t admit it himself. When asked about his plan after college, he said that he is considering two options. One is to become a pilot, a long-standing dream of his, and the other is to become a lawyer in order to have the capacity to make things better for our country. He also wants to continue being an athlete to pursue his passion, maintain his physique, and partly to avoid living the dad bod life.

Paul

PAUL NYRAY A. ANTOLINO

BA PSYCHOLOGY

Paul was born in a small island where great mountains always touch the sea. Although the island is not that big, his dreams, wishes, and aspirations are big enough to overshadow the dimension of the land. Since then, he’s always been a dreamer and a positive thinker. He believes that everything he does now will truly pay off someday. As a matter of fact, one of his dreams in life is to become a lawyer. He wants to help as many people as he could—not only his family and loved ones but also to the victims of injustice. Aside from being a lawyer, he also wants to become an ambassador for any country in Europe. He’s always loved to travel, explore, and learn different cultures. So, in order to achieve all those things, Paul believes that proper determination, willingness to succeed, and faith in God will be the foundations. While he keeps on looking forward for these things to happen, Paul is appreciating the current stage of his life. He always reads books, bonds with his friends, and explores the different landmarks of his current city. Aside from that, he also loves to go to church. And as much as possible, he tries to go there everyday. Even if he experiences the ups and downs on this stage of his life, he believes that they will mold and craft him to become a better person someday.

Diero

DIEGO ROMAN M. APACIBLE

BA PSYCHOLOGY UP Psychological Understanding for Growth and Distinction Society UP Profession and Career Enhancement Program

What is a Diero? A Diero can be described by having long and curly hair, big round glasses, and an orange tie-dye shirt. He gives off a chill and easygoing vibe, like that of a surf dude. Beyond this look, a Diero has an ability to find something interesting in just about anything. It’s easy to talk to him because he can effortlessly carry the conversation from one topic to another with no awkward silence in between. When a Diero talks about things that excite him, such as skateboarding and scuba diving, the passion that ignites in him draws you in. A Diero can adjust accordingly—he’ll become the chill friend you need or the adventurous buddy you want. What makes him extra special is that he’s that person you can be 101% honest with. Diero’s sensitive personality is also his best quality as a friend. He always seems to have the right words to comfort people or the right jokes to make anyone laugh. The more you get to know this specimen of human, the more you value the magic of his friendship. It’ll get deeper until it’s too late—you’re locked in his void of Diero puns, comfy hugs, and genuine conversations. A 250 word entry isn’t enough to define what a Diero is, but an experience that you must find out for yourself!

JOSEPH IAN FRANKLIN H. AURELLANO

BA PSYCHOLOGY UP Psychological Understanding for Growth and Distinction Society UP Flyers UP Profession and Career Enhancement Program Mandala 17 Editorial Board At first Kiko might appear silent and shy, but once you get closer to him, you’ll realize how funny he is. Kiko is known to crack funny (and corny) jokes alongside the line he was known of always saying: “Rock ‘n roll.” This line highly resonates with Kiko for it reflects his positively chill personality. He shows other people how life, despite the difficulties it may offer, also presents a lot more joys and blessings. Again, this resonates with Kiko’s personality for he highly appreciates the simple joys in life. Alongside Kiko’s wit and chill personality is his profoundness. He can engage in insightful conversations with other people because truly, Kiko is a good listener. As a student, Kiko exhibited his diligence and perseverance. He wasn’t afraid to ask the appropriate questions and, more importantly, he never settled for mediocrity. As a leader, Kiko never hesitated to share his time, talents, and treasures with other people. He served as an example to others by experiencing the hardships and joys of work with them. Kiko was part of different organizations that engaged in various activities such as teaching scholars, visiting children with chronic illnesses, and spreading an appreciation of the field of Psychology. Truly, he has come to value the challenges in life, for it was through these that he learned to do tasks in the best way possible. Kiko may definitely be considered as an Iskolar Para sa Bayan. It is no surprise that a lot of people look up to him.

Alu is Hannah. Hannah is Alu. Plus a lot of other things. Alu is effort. This is evident once you get past her intimidating resting bitch face. She is very kind and reliable—the kind of friend you can call when it’s the middle of the night and you need someone to listen or have dinner with. Alu can join you in fangirling over your favourite basketball players and/or TV hosts, but she is also down to talk about more serious things like feelings. She easily lights up the room with all her stories and musings. Alu is strong coffee. She is firm with her beliefs and convictions which make her very loyal. She is an independent lady who knows what she wants. Once she sets her mind on something, she does her best to come through. Alu is bold. She speaks up her mind. Her photos with numerous celebrities prove it. That, and her sometimes witty, a lot of times hugot-filled, statements you hear her say everyday, perhaps as a side comment in class or as a part of your conversation, demonstrates her boldness. Alu is Hannah. Hannah is Alu. Plus a lot of other things. She is the kind of person you will someday see along the billboards of EDSA or inside the pages of fashion magazines. The ones with a huge following on social media? Yup, that kind. You will just have to watch out.

She is a living proof that strength of character, alongside competence, is an effective vehicle of success. Her academic prowess is continuously honed and perfected by her thirst for knowledge. Her finesse for music has made such talent an instrument for her to be able to serve her Church and God, besides it being a hobby of hers. Inspired by her faith, she lives her life with complete trust in the Almighty and has opened her big heart to others. Hence, she is always ready to offer a piece of advice, to add you to her prayer list, to have fun with you, to hug you, or simply to give you a sweet smile as you pass by. She’s a woman on fire; a woman with flaming passion for all that she loves. She’s talented, thoughtful, sweet, carefree, compassionate, beautiful, and most of all, grateful and appreciative. She loves growth, and she really puts extra effort to get what she wants. Despite her abundance in life, she never failed to keep her feet on the ground. She’s a simple woman—and that makes her even more beautiful. Aika is also one of the most dependable friends you can have. You can talk to her about anything at any time of the day, and when you talk to her, she’s so real and she just knows what to say—perhaps that’s the psych major in her. Plus, she is such an incredible dancer. Her confidence and stage presence are always on point. Even if she is short, people look up to her. It is only right to compare her to the medium through which she most freely expresses herself: art—be it poetry, graphic design, or photography—which Emerald resembles in her beauty and complexity beyond face values. Here is a girl who is as adorable as she is frank, intelligent and wise despite her young age, and creative without end. She is like the verses she spins out: full of feeling and aspiration; like the designs she carefully crafts: particular and loyal to the things (and people) she finds her heart in; like the photographs she captures: melancholic but with reason and depth. BA PSYCHOLOGY

Zands is a typical college student who becomes stressed with exams and papers especially when it’s a day before the deadline. She admits of being a crammer but reasons that sometimes it’s unavoidable. She is a believer that very very soon her Mr. Right will come, and she dreams of all the positive things on earth. She might appear shy and reserved but when surrounded by her closest friends, she becomes a seemingly different individual. She loves trying new things but hates unexpected happenings. Until now, she is doubtful whether to consider the “Uy, akala ko freshie ka!” a compliment or not. Her journey is filled with obstacles especially with her health. In spite of this, Zands is proud that she was able to overcome every trial along her path. Zands may have lost her hope at times, but she also came to realize one thing throughout her stay in UP—she only had herself and no one else, and so she needs to be tough. She dedicates all her struggles to her family who serves as her inspiration ever since the start of the race. Zands also once thought that entering UP is impossible and a dream to be remained as it is, and so she gives her utmost effort to finish the race strong and whole. Until the time comes. #Sablay2017 #Sunflowers2k17

Life is a race in which Chloe seems to always be one step ahead. Being the disciplined and adventurous woman that she is, Chloe believes that life can never be too quick. She can and will take on multiple roles, however big the responsibility they entail, put on her game face, and get on with delivering the best outcomes. Chloe is equally passionate with life’s thrills and nature’s splendour that she is in constant search for it. There can never be too many mountains to climb, waves to traverse, and horizons to catch sight of when it comes to this free spirit. She gladly shares the experience of such with her friends, often the instigator of “akyat” and “surf” trips, and this makes her a constant reminder to them that life and nature are beautiful. Mavee

MARIA BEVERLYN G. CAPARAS

BS PSYCHOLOGY UNESCO Club of UP Diliman

If you sit down to chat with Mavee, prepare yourself for a long and satisfying conversation that can fill an entire lunch break. She may be shy at first, but she can start chatting away with almost anyone! Her friendly ways and natural interest in others make conversations easy. Breaks with her are full of strange but interesting topics (ever heard of Olympic curling?) and lots of laughter. Conversations are propped by her enthusiasm for… well, everything. Of course, Mavee gets excited over her favorite K-pop idols and figure skaters. But her enthusiasm applies, too, to daunting but fascinating class projects. Her mind leaps to ideas, and her excitement is infectious. Soon she is discussing these ideas with friends and groupmates and transforming them into top-notch work. That work ends up highly organized in Mavee’s hands. She has an uncanny knack for keeping track of things, no matter how old or cluttered they may seem. With this ability comes great responsibility, one that she handles deftly. She holds on to her friends’ money for a planned book fund, and safely tucks away all the documents that her Psych 118 groupmates need to complete their research. It’s qualities like these that make Mavee such a reliable friend. Even amidst the pressure of university life, she still finds the time and resources to have a chat with her friends, share her enthusiasm with them, and look after them. Anyone who gets to know her is a lucky person indeed.

Lexee used to be an INTJ way back in first year. It goes to show you that personality is actually pretty fluid, as she has turned an almost complete 180 over the span of just 5 years, within the space of two countries. If there’s any word she’d use to describe her stay in UP, it would be ‘turbulent.’ “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times,” as the saying goes. There were many instances in which Lexee thought that choosing to go to UP had been a mistake, but if there’s anything that UP teaches its students, it’s perseverance. To go through hell and back is a practice only the strong can survive—and if it’s not strength that you’re born with, then it’s strength that you develop. The University of the Philippines Diliman stripped her of the pride that had previously blinded her, opened her eyes to the reality that she still had (and still has) much to learn. And upon that newly formed foundation of humility, her time in Kagoshima University reawakened in her a childlike awe in the beauty of the world, in the kindness of people. In the archaic sense of the word “comedy,” as used by Dante Alighieri, at the end of great hardship came redemption. And now, she’s got all the reasons to be thankful, all the reasons to smile, as she steps forward into the next chapter of her life.

There were the professors who taught me that diligence is key not only to academic success but to personal achievements as well. Friends taught me that it’s okay to relax and go easy on yourself once in a while. I had the opportunity to meet other people who, on a normal day, wouldn’t be in the University. They taught me the importance of compassion and service. But not always are our efforts paid off. I flew high, but crashed hard. But that will not stop me from bouncing back. I can soar up again. Unfortunately for UP Diliman, this kunwari-shy-sa-umpisa-pero-secretly-pabibbo girl got accepted into the university. Also unfortunate for everyone around her, Nins has a high need to make witty jokes and to say clever things (witty and clever from her perspective, that is). If you’ve ever been in a class with her, you’ve probably heard her respond, “That’s a very good question, please keep it up!” to a question posed by the professor. It is this cheerful facade that Nins turns to in order to conceal her true feelings and hide from the world whenever she needs to. She prefers the company of a few close friends over a partying crowd. Even though most humans smell better than dogs, she sometimes prefers the company of dogs over humans. On a more interesting note, Nins doesn’t eat burgers, fries, pizza, bacon, vegetables, seafood, yogurt, etc (the list could go on but it would take up all of the pages of this year book). Finally, the most important thing to know about Nins is that she has been in a romantic relationship with Daniel Matsunaga since 2010. Her personality is just as interesting as the spelling of her name—it’s complicated but worth knowing. She’s the kind of introvert who suddenly becomes an extrovert with the people she truly cares about. If she seems ten times more crazy when you are around then don’t worry—she loves you. But if she tries to compose herself while twitching in between her smiles, oh boy—well, she’s super in love with you (yes, I’m talking to you, Oppa). What’s interesting is that she’s a friend of context: she can fit into any sort of friend stereotype you need her to be. Need a mom kind of friend? She’s got you. Need a tough cookie friend to tell your ex off? She’s got you. Need a chill hipster friend that doesn’t overwhelm you as much? She’s more than happy to be that kind of person for you. If she tells you that she’s a tarsier, tell her she’s a chameleon because she is one sturdy gal who can get through anything. If she claims that this is false, she is simply being modest—that’s how amazing she can be.

Dare to misspell her nickname, and she won’t stop until you get it right. While the letter R has no room in “Tisha”, there is a word starting with it that describes her: Responsible. From academics to organizational work, Tisha doesn’t do anything half-heartedly. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a subject she doesn’t like, or a subject she thinks she isn’t good at, because Tisha sets goals. And Tisha definitely works hard to achieve whatever she’s set out for herself. She’s the type of person who does things in advance whenever she can. Far from her home, she grew to be more than just an academic achiever. Her gaze extended as she got hooked on astronomy and joined UP Astronomical Society. She learned the ropes of leadership as she took on headship tasks in UP AstroSoc. Moreover, she served in the dorm council of Kamia, and eventually she became the chairperson for the Kamia dorm council. More than this, she has shown that she is a caring and thoughtful friend. She always surprises her close friends with fun activities for the day and gifts or food on their birthdays because she finds joy in bringing happiness. She is always a person ready to listen to a friend who needs to unload his or her thoughts and feelings. Despite being far from her family, she always keeps in touch with them and is ready to help them when the need arises. A strong and independent woman—that’s how she usually describes herself. Indeed, that’s what she has become after her 4 years in UP. She’s gone through many ups and downs and yet she continues to face them. She dreams of pursuing law and achieving her other goals after. With what she has shown in the last 4 years, it is likely that she’ll achieve this dream and plenty more in the future.

But the most appealing trait of this kid to me is her passion and commitment to whatever it is she is doing. From her academics to her work as a team head, she has shown utmost dedication to anything that she does. Almost no trial or obstacle can seem to stop her if she has already set her mind to achieve a certain goal. Being passionate, however, is not her only best trait. It is her caring heart that effortlessly draws people to her. She puts others’ needs first before hers, not even expecting for anything in return. But Steph is far more than this archetype. She seeks assurance and rootedness while wanting to explore, to be free, to transcend, and to find a purpose. She struggles to escape from an imperfect reality and demands much from herself to do it. She stands firm against exploitation, violence, and oppression, but, from time to time, she also wallows in social hypocrisy. Perhaps, neither herself nor society will ever meet her ideals but she’d rather fail than quit trying. Behind her veil of confidence and assertiveness is the lingering sense of inferiority and self-doubt. She doubts herself as much as she doubts the end of class struggle. She loves sitcoms and cartoons as much as stubbornly arguing for her principles. Steph is disillusioned and cynical of justice but her hardheadedness drives her to challenge the system. She always looks like she just ran a marathon, which is also true metaphorically as she always goes the extra mile for her friends. She is one of the few people a person can really rely on, without any worry or reservations. Her fierce loyalty to her friends and to the things that she believes in is unparalleled, especially in difficult situations that push a person to act otherwise. You never have to worry about her; if anything, you worry about yourself and how you’re such a mess compared to the calm and responsible rock that is Gianina. Don’t be fooled by her demure exterior, though: this girl can bring out laughter from the deepest parts of you. She also engages in occasional friendly catfights and regularly subjects other people to her (sometimes unwarranted) road rage. Really, Gianina (more commonly known as GMac) is a person you would want to hold on to.

Marcel is the friend who’s got you covered in everything—from basketball talk to memes, his favorite shows, music spazz sessions, generally being weird and funny, and even serious heart-to-hearts. He won’t hesitate to give his time for you. He is brutally honest, sometimes telling you things you don’t want to hear but need to. He is empathic, often trying his best to actively feel what you are feeling, especially when you’re down. He tries to be funny and energetic in hopes of bringing smiles to the faces of all the people he meets. He always tries to show that he cares. He always tries to love everyone with all the love he can give. Sometimes he isn’t what he tries to be. Sometimes he fails to be who he wants to be. He is only human after all. But no matter how many times he fails and falls, he always thanks each failure as an opportunity to learn and greets the next opportunity with a hopeful smile. Marcel is a small boy with a big heart. He tries to share it with as many people as possible. And I’m thankful to have received a piece of his heart.

Everyone sees him as this chill guy, but often proves himself otherwise—being full of depth and sincerity. Aside from that, he is the most active person that you will meet. From balancing academics, to heading projects and committees in organizations, to never having a dull social life—these are only a few of the many things that we admire in him. Claudine is fascinated by all things beautiful. Though she may look plain, she always works during her free time to learn about the aesthetics of the world. Her curiosity about arts made her a multi-talented person from crafting to performing, and everything she sees is a source of new inspiration. She would like to classify herself as a warm, jack of all trades kind of a person—someone who is capable to help a friend in anything and in everything. Her hobby is to eat all the food sweet and cheap. She is usually seated at the corner of a classroom but is always ready with her sweet smile when you meet eye-to-eye. Claudine is very introverted, very conscientious, and very open to new experiences. Her level of maturity depends on the person she deals with. She can be childish to one but very serious to the other. By and large, she is easy to get along with. A person with simple pleasures and a grateful heart. She gives credit to her family, relatives, and friends who until this time are still with her in this life’s journey.

Jewel is a hardworking, friendly individual who enjoys her KPOP, manga, and memes. UP has changed her standards forever. The university opened numerous doors for her, acquainted her with new ideas, and introduced her to new ideologies. She attends classes armed with reviewers written meticulously, taken from notes highlighted in different hues; she submits papers that have “rested” and have been checked as much as possible, and she strains her eyes to finish reading the material on a topic, all in the name of academic excellence. Her being grade conscious is something she can’t deny, but she invests a lot of time in her organization as well. She may not be the first one to tap your shoulder to start a conversation or PM you on facebook to catch up, but she will be there for you whenever you need her. In the future, she wishes to serve the Philippines by delivering justice to those who need it. An avid KPOP fan who virtually stalks her idols and cries over their new releases, she also enjoys immersing herself in Japanese culture through their media and learning the language. She takes time to appreciate internet pop culture, especially memes, no matter how dank they get. She draws, though these days they manifest in doodles. Mostly found in the margins of her notebooks, they sometimes find their way into the body of the text as well. All in all, she is not like other girls. She is like TT.

He would lift you up whenever you’re feeling down, and bring you to the most amazing parties! He also has one hell of an adventurous soul, since he is always ready to go to places -- no matter how far they are. He might actually visit all the countries in the world by the time he turns 30. He is also definitely one of the friendliest people in the department, if not the whole world. He is so friendly, he greets eight out of ten people he sees in the hallways! Kidding! Or...maybe not. Franz is the person you can count on in almost everything. He can be a great student, an energetic seatmate, a really good friend, a travel buddy, a friend you can watch four movies back to back with, a duet partner, a dance partner, a date, and a wingman, too. He has probably arranged a hundred couples in his lifetime. Again, kidding! Or... maybe not. Beyond all this, Franz is one of the most hardworking people you will ever meet. He actually has had his fair share of part-time and full-time jobs, yet he is able to balance his responsibilities with his academics, and excel colorfully in both of them. I am not kidding. BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Bukluran sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino

For J. J is for jeans- worn out, stained and tattered. The one you always wear when you think you’re too skinny or fat. Too this or too that The one that fits just right, in whatever angle or time. Because J is for no judgements. Just openness. Just belonging. Just jeans that make the cold nights warm because it had pocketed tender, dented dreams and said: it’s alright. It’s not too big. Not too small. It’s just right. Keep on dreaming. It’s just right. J is for jazz. The sound of a revolution. The saxophone solo of lonely hearts in rebellion. The sexy dance. The brass kiss. The explosion distilled in staccatto notes, subsiding into soft keys. Because J is that way: a quiet mind, sometimes caged. A misleading timidity. But underneath: his thoughts are tango dancers grooving to a song that never ends. J is for, above all things, Jian Q. A boy like jeans that always fit. A boy with music in his mind. A boy with tender dreams and lovely thoughts.

“People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That is how they define ‘reality’. But what does it mean to be ‘correct’ or ‘true’? They are merely vague concepts; their reality may all be a mirage.” - Uchiha Itachi Filled with curiosity and high expectations, Janisse entered UP as a Psychology major. Since then, she has braved her days and nights with caffeine-induced energy. She loves to see professors and fellow students passionately talk about their interests and informed opinions. The other things that make her happy may be considered mundane or even childish—she likes to think about her next meal, she feels relaxed when leaning on her friends (literally), and she gets excited when perspectives from different disciplines come together to discuss a topic. Janisse dislikes noise and people who cannot see beyond the shroud of their privilege. While she can easily get frustrated when things do not go the way she wants them to, she is always determined to finish what she started to the best of her ability. Nizza is about as easy to size up as her name—not at all. With so many facets to her personality, how can one begin to describe this strong, independent Ilongga woman? She is a writer who is not satisfied unless she gets something meaningful across through her work. She is a mental health advocate whose passion shines through word and action. A strong feminist, Nizza never allows a tough situation to break, let alone bend, her principles. Amidst her many roles, one thing rings constant: this girl stands by her beliefs. Whether it is a new spoken word piece or a simple sharing of thoughts, she never settles for anything that does not have her heart and soul plastered on it. Writer, advocate, poet—perhaps it is senseless to size Nizza up. She is all her different personas at once. She stays true—always, in all ways.

Let not his initially quiet demeanor fool you. This guy can turn the most ordinary of days into something more entertaining with his silly side comments and funny jokes. Awkward silence isn’t something to worry about as his calm attitude makes it easy to be around him no matter the scenario. Whether shallow or deep, you can count on him to move at your pace and keep a conversation going. Darynne may seem like a tough cookie but deep inside, she has a kind and generous heart that is always ready to give out all the love that she can give. Growing up in Brunei and having to live in the Philippines for the first time after so long, it was Mel’s mission to make every single college moment count. Despite wanting the security of the familiar, she took risks—joined an organization, pulled off an all-nighter almost every single night, enlisted for a dance subject as her P.E., and lined up for classes at the crack of dawn. Despite being shy, she befriended a handful of people, joined a dating auction, and stepped up to supervise teams and committees. Amidst all that, she never forgot to have fun. When she’s not scouting for the best places to have desserts and fries that are worth their price, you can find her crying over One Tree Hill or Grey’s Anatomy re-runs. Sometimes, she’s out partying with friends, or doing just about anything as long as it’s with the company of the people close to her. As one can see, friendship with Mel is something to be treasured dearly. When you have her as your partner-in-crime, do expect that she will always be on your side no matter what. She will not hesitate to drop whatever she’s doing just to provide you with emotional support, or a simple hug. She did all this while maintaining her stellar record as a student and a member of an organization. When years have passed, and she will be back in Brunei, and she recalls her life in UP, it’s (hopefully) something that she has always hoped to experience.

Kulot. Bibo. Pawisin. At the shallowest level, anyone who knew Isis Valencia would attribute these three words to him. He was that curly-haired guy who always had a smile on his face. He was also excessively active inside and outside of the university—hence, the copious amount of perspiration. Talented. Adventurous. Balanced. Aside from taking on the burden of being an iskolar ng bayan, he too, like every teenager, had a life outside of school. He was an excellent dancer, an exchange student, an involved org member, and an endearing friend. He always managed to find the balance between work and play. Dedicated. Passionate. Headstrong. U.P. has indeed shaped Isis to become a wise and deep-seated man, but it was his resilience that enabled him to overcome all of the obstacles that university and life threw at him. He had proven to be a man dedicated to and passionate about his craft. Moreover, he shall strive to embody the ideals that U.P. stands for: honor and excellence.

Sary

ROSARY FRANCES L. VALENZUELA

BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Psychological Understanding for Growth and Distinction Society UP Junior Marketing Association UP Flyers UP Scuba Society UP Profession and Career Enhancement Program

Sary has always been a woman of many talents: a prodigy of sorts who explored the world of retail, journalism, music, arts, video production, and the sciences at a time when most of us were probably too busy thinking about how to answer our homework. She is not to be mistaken as a Jack of her trades, because in anything that she does, she does it with the excellence of a Queen. However, if there is one thing above anything else that she desires to do, it is to make a strong impact in the lives of others, and she has found the world of medicine to be the gateway to accomplishing just that. This uncompromising woman has always been more than ready to make her mark in history, and I’m sure anyone who knows Sary Valenzuela would not be surprised to see her do just that.

“A witty quote proves nothing.” - Voltaire

MONICA MARIE M. VALERIO

BS PSYCHOLOGY UP Music Circle UP Astronomical Society UP Psychedelics UP Psychological Understanding for Growth and Distinction Society UP Bukluran sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino “Here was all about the visible-invisible borders, the thin lines between here and gone, then and now, here and there, random and meant, big and small.” - Ali Smith Roughly four years ago, she thought she was smart. Luckily, college helped her humble herself through exhibits of awful numbers at the end of every semester. Thankfully, college also helped her realize that these numbers are not measurements of knowing—that learning is admitting one’s knowledge is not absolute, yet is trying to apprehend to the point beyond the superficial. She accepts that she doesn’t know a lot of things — like the color of an object inside a room after the lights are switched off. Sometimes, she confuses reality with reflection, because mirrors are bizarrely clearer than life. She prefers old things because new is constantly replaced by newer but doesn’t know if new, when replaced by newer, becomes old. For her, language is arbitrary, and words can be played easily, and a 250-text piece of writing can contain everything, contain at least something, or contain nothing at all. Lastly, she is a person who always tests the limits of time, because she has a positive outlook in life especially in meeting deadlines and grace periods, thus is either almost late or indeed, late, such as that for this write-up. She is not sure yet if she will graduate on time (just like most other people), but that doesn’t seem to bother her, because she believes that the merits of time are exaggerated. Its concept is merely relative just like any other number—grades, amount of light. They were only invented to count, not to create absolute standards in this world of arbitrariness.

Hancee

HANCEELY MARXELL M. VILLA

BA PSYCHOLOGY UP Psychology Society UP Society of Students for Korean Popular Culture UP Sigma Delta Phi Alay Sining SALiGAN sa CSSP STAND UP College of Social Sciences and Philosophy Student Council “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” - Neale Donald Walsch “Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson Commonly seen in the depths of her own world of Neil Gaiman and Jeffery Deaver novels, webtoons, portaiture, tricky DIYs, and Asian dramas, Hancee is a true blue human burrito. Truly, it takes a lot of motivation to make her peek out of her beloved solitude. But when she does, she makes sure she gives a hell of an impact. Just look at how this inconspicuous lady managed to score Best in Q&A in Mr. and Ms. Psych 2014, rock the AS Lobby and AS Steps during HallyUP’s many flashmobs, land a scholarship to South Korea (to see her fangirl dreams come to life), and serve as part of the student council. Hancee’s eccentricity translates beyond her kind of humor and fashion. She tends to question the norms and hold unpopular opinions-- all of which she is ecstatic to challenge even on her own in the pursuit of maturity and excellence. Much of Hancee’s growth as an individual is derived from the opportunities and experiences that UP and her many organizations molded her with: from that freshman who wore pajamas as a prank on her first day as an iska to the actual iskolar ng bayan concerned for the emancipation of the oppressed. Hancee challenges herself and her fellow Psychology graduates to unceasingly embody honor and excellence together with the unconditional positive regard our discipline is rooted in as they all venture into the real world that proves and disproves the theories we grow to depend on… and taxes.

Loran

LORAN THERESE M. VILLANO

BA PSYCHOLOGY “It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.” -Invictus, William Ernest Henley Loran is a human filled with contradictions. She’s outgoing — but spends 90% of her life inside the house. She enjoys going to school — but dreads going to class (she really wants to learn but her mind and body tell her to do something else). She is quiet (most of the time) — but it gets noisy inside her head (not delusional!). She studies real people -- but is more interested in animated ones. She is interested in art, especially in drawing and watercolor painting and making it move. Why psychology? She is interested in the behaviors of people — and also, psychology was the only course she knew (and was interested in) back then. So it was a lack of research (which the course made up for) and a lack of time for decision. And mostly influenced by her friends’ decisions. Thus, psychology. Loran is just a student — a student in the best university in the country. She is not the best student, nor someone who would merit her own tarpaulin. But as a UP student or just as a person, as a psychologist or as an artist, as a graduate student or as an undergraduate student for life, she will always uphold two things, Honor and Excellence.

BA PSYCHOLOGY UP Psychology Society UP Sigma Delta Phi

A girl with one too many nicknames, she keeps it short and sweet by saying thank you to the people who were part of her college life. Without them, she wouldn’t have as many great memories to look back on. A lot has happened within the last four years, and she’s excited for what comes next.

“A happy piece of cheese shouts ‘congrats, class of 2017!’ on graduation day. You just heard a gay Brie yell.”

“In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer, wrote the philosopher Albert Camus. Choosing to major in psychology helped Arla not only discover more about how others think and behave, but also dig deeper into her inner self. She has truly grown into a focused and determined lady, charging through the cold winter of long nights of studying for exams, preparing for reports, writing papers, doing whatever it takes to ensure that she gives it her best. She is now in the journey of discovering the invincible summer that lies within her with the full support of her family in the next phase of her life. Congratulations and Godspeed Arla and the rest of Mandala 17!
