Make sure your home stays cozy by having your roof inspected every two years. A reputable company should clean gutters and valleys of debris, check boots over protruding pipes and chimneys for cracks, and ensure your attic has an appropriate amount of insulation. Aside from the eyesore that uneven concrete creates, the best reason to repair is to keep people safe. Uneven concrete can be a liability causing trips and falls. Plus, in certain areas, uneven concrete can lead to water drainage issues and cause costly structural damage.

How do I spot a water leak before it becomes a big problem?

On your water bill, look for high usage, which can indicate a leak. Search your basement or crawl space for possible leaks as well. Our best advice? A great way to up the efficiency of your unit is to change your air filter regularly. If there are pets or smokers in the house you should change it monthly. What benefits can an insulated garage door provide? Can I insulate my existing door?

Mark Galey, owner of Master Home Remodelers and president of the Atlanta Chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), has always had a heart for giving back. For the past 11 years, Galey has built or renovated more than 100 homes for those in need while serving as president of The Fuller Center for Housing. After attending a NARI chapter meeting at the Tremron Atlanta Design Center last year, Galey won a fire pit (donated by Tremron) at the group’s monthly raffle. For the generous contractor, it was a no-brainer to donate it to charity. His nonprofit of choice? Camp Twin Lakes, a place where children with serious illnesses, disabilities, and other life challenges can enjoy the wonders of camp. With the help of fellow NARI members Kurt Anderson, owner of Bin There Dump That, and Pamela Andersen, owner of Classic Stoneworks, Inc., the three removed the camp’s original metal fire pit at its Rutledge location and installed this new Tremron fire pit, creating a more enjoyable place where youth can gather, make s’mores, and share stories for years to come. Cozy Cooking Warm up by the fire with these easy-to-make comfort food favorites.

FRENCH ONION SOUP INGREDIENTS 1 tablespoon butter 2 pounds Vidalia or sweet onions, sliced julienne ¼ teaspoon fresh thyme, chopped ½ cup sherry 2 quarts chicken stock baguette, ½-inch thick slices Swiss or Gruyère as garnish

DIRECTIONS Sauté onions in oil in large stockpot until browned. Deglaze with sherry and let reduce. Add stock and thyme and simmer 1 hour. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Place baguette slices on sheet pan. Bake at 350 F for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Place soup into serving bowls or crocks, place 2 croutons over top and sprinkle top with cheese and place under broiler 2 additional minutes until melted. Sprinkle fresh thyme leaves over top as garnish.

Flip the mushrooms, add 2 to 3 tablespoons of water to the pan and repeat for an additional 2 to 3 minutes. Pull from heat and allow pressed mushrooms to cool on a work surface. Slice vertically into strips, then pierce and weave with skewers. Transfer to plate or dish for marinating. In small bowl, whisk together the lemon juice, 3 tablespoons olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic. Pour over the skewers and let sit for 30 to 60 minutes. Heat a cast-iron grill pan or charcoal grill on medium heat, brush oil mixture, add skewers and cook for 3 to 5 minutes on each side. Serve hot with fresh squeezed lemon!

Thinking about updating your bathroom? Consider these top trends.

• Large tile. Look for tiles at least 18x18 in size. Rectangular shapes (for example, 12x24) are popular choices for not only the floor, but the walls as well, sometimes installed vertically, sometimes horizontally. • For color, white and gray are the top choices, followed by blue. • Large, walk-in showers with a seat or bench. Rain showerheads mounted into the ceiling over the center of the shower are also popular. • Spa-themed bathrooms with freestanding or soaking tubs. When choosing a freestanding tub for your spa bathroom, take into consideration that this type of bathtub is about 5 to 10 times more expensive than a traditional tub once the plumbing is factored in. If you have a larger budget, steam showers are in style too.

• If you have to share your retreat, you may want a toilet that is separated by half of a wall, or even in its own tiny room. • Consider chandeliers instead of standard overhead light fixtures, wall sconces, can lights installed in the ceiling with dimmer switches, and an overhead light source in the shower. • Plenty of cabinet space and open shelving. Barn doors are another popular design trend. • Plumbing fixtures that are practical as well as beautiful. Brushed nickel, chrome, and satin nickel fixtures blend in with almost any type of decorating and are subdued enough to avoid drawing attention. A trend to watch for? Rose gold finish. • High-tech toilets.
