...at the Theatre Royal this season!

THE GONDOLIERS GILBERT & SULLIVAN

Sunny, funny and with more ‘tra la la las’ per square inch than any other opera in the canon, The Gondoliers is a joy from start to finish. Two happy-go-lucky gondoliers discover that one of them is, in fact, heir to the throne of a distant kingdom. True to their (adopted) Republican roots, they set off together to rule in idealistic, if somewhat chaotic, style...

UTOPIA, LIMITED GILBERT & SULLIVAN

One of G&S’s lesser-known works. In this semi-staged performance, Utopia, Limited is given its Scottish Opera premiere and the airing it so deserves. Satirising the conceits of the mighty British Empire, its politics, monarchy and press, it is as incisive now as ever it was. Full of sparkling wit, and packed with showstopping patter, brilliant choruses, and music that is, at times, of almost Verdian beauty.

A new co-production with D’Oyly Carte Opera & State Opera South Australia. Supported by Scottish Opera’s ‘Play A Supporting Role’ Appeal. Sung in English with English supertitles.

EDITORIAL

On Your Feet! We talk to Gloria Estefan about the inspirational musical and the love story that inspired it.

What has pleased you most about how On Your Feet! has been received? People seem to love it. There’s actually a group of fans called The Feeties – young girls who have seen it, like, 100 times. Others have said they were entertained or cried or were reminded of times in their lives through the songs. That’s the point – to connect with people on a very human level through our music. Has any dramatic licence been taken with true-life events? It’s all true (apart from Emilio’s six-pack!), although not always in chronological order. What are you most proud of about your career as it’s depicted in the show? That we stayed true to who we were. I tell every young artist, ‘they’re gonna try and change you’. One time they told Emilio ‘Lose the singer!’ because it was the time of bands with male leads. But we said ‘This is who we are’. What’s the most fun number in the musical? There’s a couple of really big numbers. Tradición is spectacular and then there’s Conga, where you literally see how it explodes in joy and includes the audience. When did you first get hooked on music? I was just four or five. I was quite shy but music would transport me. The old Cuban standards were big at home. Then I started listening to the British Invasion – Ferry Cross The Mersey made my hair stand on end.

20 | ATGTICKETS.COM

When you began working with Emilio did you know you were on to a winner? I’m a bit psychic and I remember telling Emilio ‘I think we’re gonna be famous all over the world’. Our biggest challenge when we put out Conga, and it was so massive, was that we wanted to release Bad Boy second and the record company went, ‘But it sounds completely different’. We went ‘Exactly’ and talked them into it. Then we wanted to release Words Get In The Way and they went ‘But it’s a ballad!’ The show illustrates just how varied our music is. When putting On Your Feet! together how tough was it for you to revisit the 1990 bus crash and what got you through rehab? I’ve spoken to a lot of people who’ve been in accidents and we all remember before and after but you don’t remember the actual impact. My father was in a wheelchair so I knew what my family might have to face. I didn’t care about getting back on stage. I just wanted to walk again. I started getting all these letters from people throwing the song Get On Your Feet back in my face and I said to Emilio ‘I never did this for the fame so what if this is the sole reason I became famous? To persevere and inspire people?’ How did it feel when you first performed on stage again? It was euphoric. It was how I imagine climbing Mount Everest would feel. I had overcome so many obstacles. It was amazing. Interview by Simon Button.

The Magic of Ghost Stories We chat to the talented Andy Nyman about his phenomenally successful supernatural stage play that’s broken box office records in theatres across the world. Ghost Stories is one of the most original and exciting stage plays of the century. Without giving too much away can you tell us a little about it? I’m sorry (laughs) but I won’t. Giving too much away spoils the anticipation and we want people to experience a good scare and a laugh – it’s full of surprises. The stage play asks audiences to keep its secret. Now it’s been turned into a film can theatre audiences still be surprised? Nothing is spoiled if you’ve seen the film. Although the story is loosely similar, the stage version is full of suspense with an incredible set and sound. Audiences will leave feeling thrilled. What is it about the subject matter of Ghost Stories that compels audiences? A rattling good story. One that has meaning and impact. And it also contains a lot of truth. What was your inspiration for the story? I’ve known co-creator, Jeremy Dyson since we were 15 and we both love horror stories. I thought it’d be great to work with him so when I had the idea we pitched it and a date was set for an initial six week run. We didn’t dream it would go all over the world and we pinch ourselves at its success. I think this tour is the ultimate version of the play and everyone who comes to see it will have a ball. Who is your favourite character in Ghost Stories and why? Professor Goodman, the

30 | ATGTICKETS.COM

parapsychologist. He’s a mix of me and Professor Richard Wiseman. I’ve known him for 30 years and he’s an extraordinary and interesting man. We spoke to him very early on in the writing process and gained some fascinating insights. The science on display is actual fact. If it wasn’t presented in a play, the things he says would be a valid talk at a TED Conference. What do you think lies within the human psyche that likes to be drawn into (and believe in) the ‘unknown’? Fear of the unknown is instinctive – it’s rooted in the need to survive. If we see a shape with a face in the darkness we flee because it might be a predator. There’s no downside to that fight or flight response to the unknown. We live with fears every day but we rarely get a really good scare. That’s why we like rollercoasters and horror films – it’s getting that adrenaline rush in a safe environment. When it comes to ghosts or the supernatural, are you a sceptic? Yes – but I think of myself as a spiritual person. What question do you have that remains universally unanswered? Why are people so sh**ty to each other? It’s so simple. Take greed out of the equation and the world will be a better place. Interview by Kerry Walker

The Priscilla Factor Jason Donovan and Joe McFadden tell us why Priscilla Queen of The Desert is so special to them. Jason, were you a fan of the original movie? I was actually offered a lead role in the film, but a sequence of events at the time made it impossible to take on. But then I was cast in the stage production in 2010; I think when they did the musical, they fine-tuned the story which is why it works so well. It’s a piece that I love, I think it’s of our time and it’s something that I’m passionate about. The story has become a cult classic, why do you think that is? Joe: There’s loads of things that really work; the fantastic songs and the incredible story. It was way ahead of its time; I think it’s one of the first pieces of drama that focused on a trans person and discussed issues like gay parenting. It’s timeless, super-entertaining and joyous. Jason: I think it has universal themes of overcoming prejudice and adversity; it’s a modern musical that tackles how people want to be different yet recognizes that we’re all really the same underneath. And the music is great. For anyone who hasn’t seen it before, or hasn’t seen the film, what can audiences expect from the show? Joe: It starts with my character Tick working in a Sydney drag bar, enjoying his life when he gets a call from his past. We find out he has a wife, who asks him to come and do a show at Alice Springs and spend some time with his son who he hasn’t had much contact with. He decides to rope in a couple of his pals and travel across Australia in a big bus. His friends think they are just going to do the

34 | ATGTICKETS.COM

show, and have no idea that he has a child! The relationship between the three friends drives the story. There’s loads in there for the audience to get their teeth into! Jason, what’s it like seeing Joe McFadden taking on your part? He’s a fantastic actor and his singing is great. I’ve got to be careful with interfering because I have an interpretation of how it should be done, having done it for so many years so I try and take a back seat! Have you given him any advice or tips yet, or are you leaving him to try things out for himself? No, I haven’t, it’s his job to interpret the character in the way that he sees fit. I really believe that if you cast something right, you can just let your actors get on with it. What about you, Joe? Will you welcome tips from Jason? Absolutely! He said that being on stage and playing the character is the fun bit, it’s when you come off stage and you have these really fast costume changes to do that it can get tricky. Also, looking after your back in the huge heels! Do you have much experience of wearing high heels? Ha! Absolutely none, whatsoever. I’ve walked around inside to get used to them, and I was a little bit like Bambi but I’m slowly getting better. It’s difficult, I don’t know how anyone could do it all day! And you will definitely be kept on your toes in Priscilla… Yes, quite literally!
