EDITORIAL

Coming back for more Soo Bishop from Merton Music Foundation and Andy Alty from Wimbledon Civic Theatre Trust talk to us about their collaboration at New Wimbledon Theatre. Wimbledon Civic Theatre Trust (WCTT), and Merton Music Foundation (MMF) have joined forces to bring a unique adaptation of Oliver Twist to local schools with the aid of the Young Actors Company (YAC), and the MMF young musicians. Supported by Arts Council England, the project culminates in a public ‘Big Night Out’ fundraising performance on Monday 3rd February. Where did the idea for the project come from? Soo: It’s Merton Music Foundation’s 30th anniversary in 2021, and I was thinking about how to mark it. Last year we brought nearly 2,000 children from local schools to watch the fantastic electric string group, Stringfever, and I wanted to do something as participatory – that’s where Andy and MMF young musicians came in. Andy: Our Young Actors Company worked with Merton Music Foundation on their Albert Hall project last year and everybody loved being a part of it. Soo suggested that we do a musical production based on Charles Dickens Oliver Twist. The piece we’ve come up with is going to feature young people performing for young people; highly participatory, hugely enjoyable and very colourful. What will the benefit evening consist of? Soo: The first half will be an invigorating performance of popular songs and pieces from our senior band, Merton Youth Concert Band. Our players are extraordinary – they never miss rehearsals and have performed at all kinds of

16 | ATGTICKETS.COM

iconic venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Wimbledon Tennis Championships. They just love performing. Andy: After a lovely musical first half, part two will be a classic Oliver Twist but with a very different ‘twist’. We’re turning the story inside out; the audience will be shouting out and getting involved in the action, which will be great fun. It’s going to be 60 years since the first production of the musical Oliver!, and we’re celebrating New Wimbledon Theatre’s proud connection with that great show. How can people get involved with MMF or YAC? Andy: We always like to hear from anyone who wants to get involved. Send an email to mail@wctt.org.uk and we will get back to you with information. Fees are set at an affordable rate and we also have free places available. Soo: We also deliver 1,350 lessons in schools each week and lots of projects. We also run our Music Centre, currently with 28 different ensembles and musical groups that children and young people can join. For details visit www.mmf.org.uk. We also offer financial assistance. Andy: And if you come to the ‘Big Night Out’ on 3rd February you’ll be supporting two incredible local charities. WCTT & MMF are supported by The Taylor Family Foundation. EDITORIAL

On Your Feet! We talk to Gloria Estefan about the inspirational musical and the love story that inspired it.

What has pleased you most about how On Your Feet! has been received? People seem to love it. There’s actually a group of fans called The Feeties – young girls who have seen it, like, 100 times. Others have said they were entertained or cried or were reminded of times in their lives through the songs. That’s the point – to connect with people on a very human level through our music. Has any dramatic licence been taken with true-life events? It’s all true (apart from Emilio’s six-pack!), although not always in chronological order. What are you most proud of about your career as it’s depicted in the show? That we stayed true to who we were. I tell every young artist, ‘they’re gonna try and change you’. One time they told Emilio ‘Lose the singer!’ because it was the time of bands with male leads. But we said ‘This is who we are’. What’s the most fun number in the musical? There’s a couple of really big numbers. Tradición is spectacular and then there’s Conga, where you literally see how it explodes in joy and includes the audience. When did you first get hooked on music? I was just four or five. I was quite shy but music would transport me. The old Cuban standards were big at home. Then I started listening to the British Invasion – Ferry Cross The Mersey made my hair stand on end.

20 | ATGTICKETS.COM

When you began working with Emilio did you know you were on to a winner? I’m a bit psychic and I remember telling Emilio ‘I think we’re gonna be famous all over the world’. Our biggest challenge when we put out Conga, and it was so massive, was that we wanted to release Bad Boy second and the record company went, ‘But it sounds completely different’. We went ‘Exactly’ and talked them into it. Then we wanted to release Words Get In The Way and they went ‘But it’s a ballad!’ The show illustrates just how varied our music is. When putting On Your Feet! together how tough was it for you to revisit the 1990 bus crash and what got you through rehab? I’ve spoken to a lot of people who’ve been in accidents and we all remember before and after but you don’t remember the actual impact. My father was in a wheelchair so I knew what my family might have to face. I didn’t care about getting back on stage. I just wanted to walk again. I started getting all these letters from people throwing the song Get On Your Feet back in my face and I said to Emilio ‘I never did this for the fame so what if this is the sole reason I became famous? To persevere and inspire people?’ How did it feel when you first performed on stage again? It was euphoric. It was how I imagine climbing Mount Everest would feel. I had overcome so many obstacles. It was amazing. Interview by Simon Button.

For the Love of Red Shoes How the story of one dancer’s desire for red shoes brought classical ballet to life on the big screen.

They had already established a reputation for the epic, exotic and magical with ground-breaking works such as A Matter of Life and Death and Black Narcissus. As early as 1916, Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova had danced on the big screen in The Dumb Girl of Portici. But in The Red Shoes ballet is actually its subject. Moira Shearer plays gifted young dancer, Victoria Page who catches the eye of the exacting Boris Lermontov (Anton Walbrook). He is a ballet impresario with an all-or-nothing obsession with the form. When Page falls for composer Julian Craster (Marius Goring), Lermontov gives her an ultimatum: choose between her love of this man and her love of dance. Karen, the girl at the centre of Andersen’s The Red Shoes has a similar dilemma. Her refusal to take off her treasured shoes even for church set in motion a dark allegory about Christian devotion and the wages of sin. Karen receives divine punishment in the form of shoes that have a life of their own; going in whatever direction they please by day and by night. By the time Karen

22 | ATGTICKETS.COM

is ready to repent, it’s too late. Even with her feet chopped off, the shoes block her path to church. Death is her release and redemption. This story inspires the 17-minute ballet at the heart of the film. Page falls into a reverie imagining Craster stepping up from the orchestra pit to dance a duet with her; then, she’s falling into the clutches of Lermontov, who regards ballet as a religion. Like Karen, Page is torn between passion and duty. Powell and Pressburger cast real-life ballerinas and engaged leading choreographers to make sure their extended ballet sequence blurred the line between filmic realism and fantasy. The stage appears to have no limits; the dance is as free as the red shoes. Scenery, partners and costumes come and go, yet Page dances on. To achieve the effects required, director of photography Jack Cardiff modified his camera, enabling him to create the impression of a dancer floating at the height of a leap or figures rushing at tremendous velocity. His camerawork was heightened by a lush, painterly colour palette. Many people have admitted being influenced by the film, including actors, writers and directors. Martin Scorsese, who saw The Red Shoes as a child, would list it as one of his top five films and would pick up its theme of determination in Raging Bull. To this day, the red shoes haven’t stopped dancing. Written by Mark Fisher

© John Good (reproduced with permission)

‘There is really nothing in the world that can be compared to red shoes,’ wrote Hans Christian Andersen in his 1845 fairytale, The Red Shoes. The same could be said of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, a formidable directorial double act who changed the face of cinema.

‘A TAPESTRY OF GREATEST HITS.’ T H E G UA R D I A N

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, the Olivier Award-winning West End and Broadway show is coming to Wimbledon.

Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit song-writing team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, with countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Take Good Care of My Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might as Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof, and The Locomotion.

ATG THEATRECARD

9 TO 5? More like 5, 6, 7, 8! With 9 to 5 The Musical movin’ and shakin’ its way into theatres, we decided to give our TheatreCard Members the chance to dance like Dolly at our latest exclusive event at The Palace Theatre, Manchester. The evening started with a toe-tappin’, hip-bumpin’ workshop led by the musical’s own dance captain, Sierra Brewerton. Members spent 45 minutes learning a dance from the show, with expert instruction and plenty of exciting choreography! Members who felt more comfortable in a cosy theatre seat than up on their feet were also able to enjoy the class. A mum who decided to spectate said: ‘I’m watching my daughter up on stage, she’s doing really well. It looks really good fun. As a parent, I’m really proud!’ After all that two-steppin’, complimentary refreshments were provided in the bar... in the form of a signature ‘Cup of Ambition’ cocktail of course! Members were able to kick back, relax and socialise before sitting down to enjoy the evening performance. Everyone had a fantastic time, both at the dance class and the musical itself. They loved being able to perform a routine from the actual show, which they watched back later – this time performed by the cast as part of the storyline. One Member sent us a lovely note afterwards, saying:

‘We very much appreciated all your help throughout the event; my daughter Taylor was in her element. We’d like to extend our best wishes to Sierra, who was brilliant throughout. Please also send a message to the cast of the show, who were tremendous. It was a great show – everyone was amazing – and we’ll be telling everyone to go and watch it!’ Not a Member yet? Simply sign up for TheatreCard Classic or TheatreCard Plus – you’ll enjoy a huge range of benefits, including ticket offers, fee-free booking, priority seats, access to exclusive content... and invitations to backstage experiences like this at your local theatre.

‘Thank you so much for the enjoyable pre-show entertainment. My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening. We were so looked after by all the staff involved in the workshop.’
