Appreciating the classics What we like best about the Northern Wilds are the things that never change. A special vista, a secret lake or a favorite hiking trail are the sort of things that draw us back time and again. Sometimes, we bring the best things with us when we visit these places. Perhaps it’s a floppy hat that’s been on many adventures or a wood/canvas canoe that’s criss-crossed the Quetico. These familiar places and objects can evoke nostalgia or just make you feel good. That’s why they’re classics.

Do you have a question for one of our writers? Or an interesting photo, recipe, or story you’d like to share with Northern Wilds? Please send it to storyideas@northernwilds.com.

In this issue, we’ve featured some Northern Wilds classics. We have some exquisite photos by Paul Sundberg of the wonderful stone structures in Gooseberry Falls State Park that were constructed by young men working in the Civilian Conservation Corps 80 years ago. Mike Furtman discusses what it is about wooden canoes and Duluth packs that makes them so well suited to paddling in the canoe country. Brenda Hadrich penned an ode to an old tent. Delving into the corners of his tackle box, Gord Ellis came up with some classic fishing lures. Taking fish to the table, Chuck Viren looks at classic ways to prepare two Lake Superior favorites—lake trout and herring. We have a couple of fun photo features in this issue, too. Ashley Bredemus introduces us to some

of the best-loved residents of the Gunflint Trail; the dogs that greet and entertain visitors to resorts. Breana Roy compiled a collection of summer pictures from past Northern Wilds photo contests. Intrepid traveler Julia Prinselaar takes us to the Scottish Highlands, where she learned more about the traditional tanning of sheep, deer and even fish skins. Fans of North Shore and Isle Royale history will appreciate Elle Andra-Warner’s story of a luxury yacht that became a working boat on western Lake Superior. We’ve reached the point in summer when the days become noticeably shorter. Mornings and evenings are cool and refreshing. Biting insects are few. It’s a great time to enjoy just about any outdoor activity. If you are visiting the North Shore on the U.S. side of the border, be sure to plan ahead, because places to stay and to camp are either reserved in advance or fill up quickly. Have a mask in your pocket or, better yet, on your face, because many places require their use. And, as they say in Cook County, please stay one moose apart from folks who are not in your group. Most of all, slow down, take a deep breath and enjoy summer before it slips away.—Shawn Perich and Amber Pratt

CCC replica bench and stone work. | PAUL SUNDBERG

Classic stonework a legacy of the CCC NORTH SHORE—The Civilian Conservation Corps was created during the Great Depression to provide work for legions of unemployed young men. Men enrolled in the program were sent to camps administered by the Army, often in rural areas, where they worked on projects for soil and water conservation, forestry and enhancements to state and national parks. The CCC lasted from 1933 to 1942. During that span of time Minnesota had 148 camps with 77,000 workers.

CCC building with mushrooms at window corners. | PAUL SUNDBERG

A remarkable number of CCC camps were located on the North Shore and throughout northeastern Minnesota. Their work created lasting legacies for everyone who enjoys the outdoors. You can happen upon red pine plantations marked with mossy, wooden signs indicating they were planted by the CCC. But the most visible fruits of their efforts are the wonderful stone and log structures they built in state parks. Paul Sundberg, the retired manager of Gooseberry State Park and freelance outdoor photographer, said that over 80 stone and log structures and other objects such as drinking fountains and picnic tables in the park were built by the CCC. The park has a self-guided legacy tour so visitors can see and appreciate their works. There is even a statue dedicated to CCC workers in the park. Especially notable at Gooseberry is the stonework. Two Italian stonemasons, John Berini and Joe Cattaneo, directed the crews who built many of the buildings. The stones are multicolored. The dark stone came from a quarry near East Beaver Bay and the red rocks came from a quarry near the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. Sand for the mortar came from Flood Bay east of Two Harbors. The logs for the buildings were cut in Cascade State Park. At the time, the area

exceptionally significant for their remarkable stone construction. The intricate designs use imaginative combinations of red, blue, brown and black granite. This stonework is the most visually distinctive masonry construction in the state park system. The park’s landscape design is one of the most extensive and comprehensive state park designs from the period, involving professionals from the Minnesota Central Design Office as well as consulting landscape architects.” —Shawn Perich

Lakeview Shelter Gooseberry Falls. | PAUL SUNDBERG around Gooseberry had been logged around the turn of the century by the Nestor Logging Company. The crowning achievement was the 300foot “castle in the park,” a wall that is just visible from the highway on the west side of the Gooseberry River bridge. The immensity of the “castle” can only be appreciated by walking through the park. Sundberg said the young men on the CCC crews used to like to sit on the wall with fishing rods. Tourists would ask what they were catching

and the young men would string them along with fish stories. It wasn’t until the tourists peered over the wall that they realized there was nothing but dry ground far below. Sundberg said a more lasting example of the CCC crews’ humor can be found on the back side of a building that is no longer in use, where they carved the face of a Martian in the stone. Bluefin Bay Resorts under new ownership TOFTE—The Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts— an award-winning collection of Lake Superior resorts—was purchased by North Shore native, Joe Swanson, and business partner, Pipasu Soni, of BFB Management, LLC, on June 30.

sets are also exceptional. I’m confident we’ve selected an ownership team that is deeply committed to continuing the Bluefin Bay tradition of creating memorable vacation experiences for guests for years to come,” Rysdahl said.

Dennis Rysdahl, who co-founded and managed the resort properties for 36 years, listed the resorts for sale in early 2019 as part of a succession plan. The first condos at Bluefin Bay on Lake Superior opened for business in 1984, followed by Temperance Landing in 2006, and Surfside on Lake Superior in 2008. Combined, the three lakeside resorts have 229 bedrooms and can host up to 704 guests across a collection of guest rooms, suites, condos and townhomes.

Also included in the sale were the resorts’ three restaurants: The Bluefin Grille, Coho Café and Bakery, Waves of Superior Café, as well as Waves of Superior Spa. In addition, the resort properties include indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, fitness centers, tennis courts, ice rinks, children’s play areas, and wedding and event venues.

In planning for his succession, Rysdahl sought to find a buyer who would carry on the legacy of first-rate lodging and amenities, warm and friendly hospitality, and the high quality of guest service for which the Bluefin Bay brand is known. For Rysdahl, that also meant developing the resorts’ leadership team and selecting an owner who would continue the longstanding commitment to the Bluefin Bay staff, owner partners, and the local community. “I knew when I saw Joe Swanson’s name on the list of potential buyers that he was one of us. He shares a history here, as well as our core values and commitment to the community. Pipasu Soni’s resume and skill

For Joe Swanson, owning Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts is a dream come true. A Silver Bay native, Swanson worked at Bluefin Bay for seven years during high school and college in housekeeping, dining and maintenance positions. Now a 401(k) and business advisor in the Twin Cities, when Swanson saw the resort for sale, he immediately contacted his friend and business partner, Pipasu Soni, a public company CFO, to discuss the idea. “We’re deeply committed to advancing the culture and reputation of Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts developed by Dennis and his team,” Swanson said. “The Bluefin Bay team is the best I’ve ever met, bar none! That’s a tribute to Dennis’ leadership and hard work to create a community and experience beloved by so many.”

Bluefin Bay Family of Resorts was purchased by North Shore native Joe Swanson and business partner Pipasu Soni on June 30. | SUBMITTED As part of the transition, Rysdahl will remain on contract to provide leadership and mentor the management team, which is especially important as they navigate operating during the Covid pandemic. “We’ve had great success over the last two years building a capable and committed leadership team in preparation for an eventual sale, and the new owners will retain that team. I have a high degree of confidence that the operations of the resorts will continue to thrive,” Rysdahl confirmed. Frank Jermusek, President of SVN | Northco Real Estate Services out of Minneapolis brokered the sale.

“I have been involved with a number of resort sales on the North Shore over the last few years and was struck by the immediate connection the buying team and selling team had right out of the gate. Closing a transaction during the lockdown was very challenging and I think it took the perfect fit to make that happen,” Jermusek said.

There are two new single-track trails being built this year in Lake County: one in the Demonstration Forest near Two Harbors, and Split Rock Wilds between the historic Split Rock Lighthouse and Beaver Bay. | SUBMITTED

Dave Cizmas expects the Split Rock Wilds trail system to be classified as “intermediate with advance features” upon competition. | SUBMITTED

Lake County builds new bike trails TWO HARBORS— In recent years, the Lake Superior Basin has been developed into a renowned mountain biking destination, drawing riders from around the country. In places like Duluth, Thunder Bay, Marquette and Copper Harbor, mountain bikers enjoy hundreds of miles of world-class singletrack trails that take full advantage of Superiors natural terrain and beauty. On the North Shore, more than 16 miles of new wilderness flow trail were completed just last year between Britton Peak and Lutsen Mountain in a project spearheaded by the Superior Cycling Association (SCA) in Cook County. The new trails, Jackpot and High Climber, flow beautifully along the Sawtooth Mountains with plenty of berms, features, and overlooks that make the ride enjoyable for single-track riders of all levels. Now, in 2020, there is another exciting trail system in the works in nearby Lake County. As a part of their current trails’ initiative, Lake County is in the process of adding its own series of single-track trails, some 50+ miles or so, to utilize a landscape that feels like it was made for riding. “It’s a very exciting time for single-track on the Shore” says Dave Cizmas, Lake County Recreation Forester and project lead for Lake County’s new single-track trail systems. Cizmas has been mountain biking seriously for over 10 years, and took over as the county’s recreation forester in March of 2019. Prior to working for Lake County, Cizmas worked as a forester for Douglas County, Wisc., and served on the COGGS (Cyclists of Gitchi Gumee Shores) board in Duluth. He is currently on the Spirit Mountain board of directors.

According to Cizmas, there are two new single-track trail systems being built this year in Lake County: Demonstration Forest near Two Harbors, and Split Rock Wilds between the historic Split Rock Lighthouse and Beaver Bay. Located a few miles inland from Two Harbors, the Demonstration Forest trails will consist of 15-20 miles of relatively beginner-friendly trail once complete. “Already, there are 7 miles of completed, rideable trail in Demonstration Forest,” says Cizmas, “with four of those miles being proper single-track. For the rest, a Minnesota Conservation Corps crew (MCC) is doing more work as we speak.” The Demonstration Forest project is being funded in large part by the One Track Mind Foundation, a nonprofit whose mission is funding mountain bike trail building and maintenance across the United States. The trails being built in this area will continue to be beginner-intermediate level single-track, passing through forested landscapes with minimal elevation change. “The Demonstration Forest trails have a classic, hand-built feel to them” says Cizmas, who describes the construction of the new trails as “old-school.” Unlike the new trails in Cook County, which are flowy with plenty of berms and features, the new Demonstration Forest trails are designed to be “tighter and ‘twistier’, with fewer berms and more of a rugged feel to them.” Also of note, Demonstration Forest is situated upon an esker—a natural gravel deposit resulting from the meltwater of a retreating glacier. Because of this it will be less suscep-

tible to wet conditions, allowing the new system to stay open in all types of weather. The second trail system in the works this year is the highly anticipated Split Rock Wilds, a set of trails that Cizmas expects to be classified as “intermediate with advance features” upon completion.

Split Rock State Park, with plans to extend the trail North to Cove Point. Eventually the hope is to extend the system all the way to Beaver Bay proper. “Next year we’re hoping to build another 8-10 miles that will make it a big loop,” says Cizmas. “We’re building the advance trail

Located a few miles inland from Two Harbors, the Demonstration Forest trails will consist of 15-20 miles of relatively beginner-friendly trail once complete. “This is the big project,” says Cizmas, “the one everyone is looking forward to. Currently we have three crews building in there, and hope to complete 12-16 miles by the end of the year.” Unlike the nearby flow trails Jackpot and High Climber, Split Rock Wilds is mostly rock with a gabbro and granite base that “will look smooth but have a ton of traction.” There will be a plethora of overlooks along the trail, making it a destination bike trail despite its challenging terrain. Just like with Demonstration Forest, the Split Rock Wild Trails are being built more as traditional single-track, with few berms and added bike features along the way. “On these trails, the rock is the feature” says Cizmas, who compares the Split Rock Wilds to Piedmont in Duluth, or parts of the Pincushion system in Grand Marais.

this year, the beginner loop on more mellow terrain next year. Then, the next phase will be to get through some private land and connect the trail to Beaver Bay.” Currently, there is no legal access to Split Rock Wilds, but Cizmas implores riders to be patient and come ready to ride next spring when the trail officially opens. “Keep your ears open for announcements and updates,” says Cizmas. “We will need lots of wheels on the trail next spring to pack it down.” For updates and information on the new Lake County trails, visit the Lake County Mountain Bike Trails (LCMBT) Facebook page, or check out the trail postings on: trailforks.com.—Eric Weicht

Canadian tourism faces existential struggle ONTARIO— In July, northwestern Ontario’s Sunset Country tourism released a short video that wasn’t about promoting tourism. Instead, the video pointed out that drive-up resorts and fly-in outposts, which depend on American customers for more than 90 percent of their business, are at a complete standstill due to the pandemic-related border closure. Most operations chose to not open this year. However, they continue to have significant costs for maintenance and upkeep. But lodge operators say that unlike other Canadian industries, tourism has not received targeted support and financial assistance from the government. They warn that without such intervention, the nation’s tourism industry is facing catastrophic devastation. If that happens, the effects on the Canadian economy will be long-lasting. “Tourism in Canada is larger than agriculture, forestry and mining combined,” says Ted Putnam, owner of Hawk Lake Lodge east of Kenora. “It brings billions of dollars into the country. That money stays in the country.” Putnam, who is on the Sunset Country board of directors, says lodges that have been operated by the same families for decades are in danger of going under. Most chose not to open this year, because Canada had a stricter lockdown than the U.S., including restrictions on cross-provincial travel, which limited their ability to attract Canadian customers. The operating costs associated with opening their businesses are substantial, especially when they were faced with the likelihood of few customers and the possibility of having to shut down if virus cases surged. The reality is that 2020 covid closures have cost the lodge industry the end of the ice fishing season, the spring bear hunt, spring and summer fishing and very likely the fall bear hunt. “This is a seasonal business,” Putnam said. “That’s what makes our situation so difficult. Now we are nervous about next year.”

The lodge operators are not calling for the border to the U.S. to reopen. The vast majority of Canadians do not want to see the order open until the U.S. has contained the novel coronavirus. What they do want is a recognition of their plight by the Canadian government. “No one seems to be hearing our voice,” said Putnam. “We don’t think the government cares about us. We may not be the GMs and Chryslers of the world, but if you add us up, we have a substantial economic impact.” Thunder Bay, an urban tourism destination on Lake Superior, has fared somewhat better. Paul Pepe, the city’s tourism director, says U.S. travelers account for 33 percent of the Thunder Bay’s tourism market, as opposed to 95 percent for the lodges and fly-in outposts. Ontarians from the southern part of the province are venturing to the city, even though the Ministry of Health is still advising no travel. “We’re seeing some new trends,” Pepe said. “We have a younger market coming from Toronto and there are more Canadian motorcyclists than we’ve seen in recent years. Right now, we’re celebrating these little successes.” Pepe can also cite grim statistics. One third of Ontario’s tourism attractions don’t expect to survive the year. This is actually an improvement, because 60 percent were saying they wouldn’t make it as recently as May. He is optimistic the government will act to help the tourism industry weather the covid storm. “Saving the industry now benefits everyone later,” he said. For Putnam, government intervention can’t come soon enough.

Ted Putnam, owner of Hawk Lake Lodge, says that with help from the government, many resorts and outfitters may not survive to reopen when the pandemic subsides. | SUBMITTED do. It just crushes me. We’ve put our blood, sweat and tears into our businesses.”—Shawn Perich

In 1998, Brenda and her husband purchased a “Walrus” tent for half-price from an Ely outfitter. It has since remained the best tent and provided many wonderful memories. | BRENDA HADRICH

The Old Tent By Brenda Hadrich

For many years, I camped out of a small travel trailer with my husband and three young boys. For the extra sleeping room, we took a pup tent and had a fold down seat in our Suburban. We experienced the Lake Superior Circle Tour, Colorado Rockies, Minnesota North Shore State Parks and much more. We were introduced to the BWCAW when the boys reached middle school, and a whole new world opened. But, we needed a tent. We needed a real tent. We went to an Ely outfitter who sold used gear at the end of the season. It was in 1998 that we bought our “Walrus” tent for half price. Over the years we’ve tried other tents; it has remained our best tent.

[L TO R]: Brenda, John and Fr. Ben Hadrich while

camping. | BRENDA HADRICH

Fast forward to 2018. Before setting up that tent, I bragged to our companions about the integrity of the best tent before even getting it out of the sack. I told of it remaining stable and dry during times of wind, rain and snow. It kept us cool and mosquito free as well.

As memories began to jump out of the pages of my camping past, I couldn’t help but notice how the elastic flap fasteners had lost their stretch. I also saw the faded look to the tent and the seams gleaming with past sealer applications. “What’s going on?” I asked myself. “Yesterday, the tent was new.” I did the math; it was far from new.

DISCOVERY CHARTERS located in the largest Marine Conservation Area in the world

As I daydreamed, the physical characteristics of the tent began to blur with my physical capabilities. My joint elasticity is a bit challenged; my hair has faded. Occasionally, I need medical seam sealer, a.k.a. a cast and I am seldom without prescribed exercises from the physical therapist. With some sadness, quickly replaced by gratitude, I reconciled that both the tent and I have weathered life’s storms. I am more careful navigating a rocky portage; I have lightened the load in my pack, and I maintain a fitness regime. Yes, the tent and I are still in action. That night I was kept dry in a heavy rain.

WANTED: A few masked men and women GRAND MARAIS— It’s a busy summer in Grand Marais and nearly every business is short-staffed. Toss in the novel coronavirus pandemic and businesses must cater to not only to their customer’s needs, but also their safety. Some businesses are requiring masks and limiting the number of customers allowed inside. To do so, the businesses need a greeter at the door. Staffing is already stretched thin, so some businesses are unable to dedicate an employee to door-greeting duties. Fortunately, that’s a role that can easily be filled by community volunteers. The use of volunteers to assist businesses began last spring, when the local grocery stores offered curbside-only service. Volunteers helped with shopping and delivering groceries to customers’ vehicles. As summer’s throngs of visitors arrived, local resi-

dent Roger Barton reached out to local businesses to see if any could use volunteer help. He heard back from three: Joy & Company, Lake Superior Trading Post and Buck’s Hardware. They were in need of greeters. Working with Claire Smith, Barton began developing a team of volunteers who spend three or four hours outside the store wearing a mask. They greet customers, offer hand sanitizer and make sure everyone is wearing a mask. If a store reaches its capacity, they’ll often hold customers outside the door. The volunteer greeter program, which began in June, has attracted enough individuals to provide the stores with a few greeters. Barton says they could use a few more volunteers. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer greeter can contact him at (218) 370-9637. —Shawn Perich

Points North On WMAs, the pendulum swings to industry By Shawn Perich

The Minnesota DNR recently announced that it was opening up the grasslands on state Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) for emergency haying and grazing to meet a covid-induced demand for additional forage from state livestock producers, many of whom held on to their stock due to disruptions in meat packing. The health emergency is real, as is the shortage of forage. Grass is in short supply in parts Minnesota where agriculture is strongly focused on the production of corn and soybeans. But the DNR’s action deserves scrutiny. WMAs are public lands largely purchased and maintained with hunting license revenues, excise taxes paid on guns and hunting gear, and state sales tax revenue dedicated habitat acquisition and management. In other words, WMAs are public lands intended to provide habitat and wildlife-oriented public recreation, not commodity production. DNR prairie habitat supervisor Greg Hoch said the DNR began using haying and grazing as a habitat management tool more than a decade ago. Grasslands need occasional rejuvenation, which historically was accomplished naturally by wildfires and grazing bison. In modern habitat management, wildlife managers use prescribed burns, haying and grazing to mimic nature. Hoch said that on the state’s 1.3-million-acre WMA system (about 500,000 acres are grasslands) an average of 4,000 acres are hayed and 10,000 acres are grazed annually under existing management plans. The emergency haying and grazing will be above and beyond that amount. Producers can use a Minnesota Dept. of Agriculture website to contact the local area wildlife manager with their forage requests. The manager will then direct them to a WMA where they can cut hay or graze cattle if these activities will meet a wildlife or management objective on that WMA. Hoch emphasized that it is up to the area wildlife managers to decide if and where these activities may occur. He said a manager may utilize the haying to meet a future management objective, such as creating a firebreak along a parcel where a prescribed burn is planned for next spring. Most of the hay leases are expected to be relatively small; 30 acres is considered a large haying job on state land. Producers will be charged the fair market value for the forage. The monies will go into the state’s Game and Fish Fund, but will not be earmarked for

any specific purpose. At the time of this interview, producers had signed up for about 500 to 600 acres of public forage. Given the small number of requests, one may wonder about the necessity of the emergency forage program or if monies derived from the program will even begin to cover the costs of the administrative gyrations of two state agencies that were required to make it happen. But it must be acknowledged that the program will remain in place after the present emergency has passed. In reality, the agriculture industry in this increasingly grass-poor state has opened the door ever-so-slightly wider accessing to publicly owned grasslands for hay and pasture. Who’s to say there won’t be another emergency of a different sort next year…or the year after that? Viewed as a stand-alone, the emergency haying and grazing program is not a big deal. But if you step back and take a hard look at some DNR public lands policies developed in recent years, a trend emerges. When it comes to land management, the agency has begun favoring industry over habitat, slowly eroding a legacy of management strategies intended to benefit our wild lands and the people who enjoy them. For example, about five years ago the agency announced that it was reducing the rotation age for red pine plantations on state forests from a previously agreed upon habitat-based strategy of 100 years or more to an industry-friendly strategy of 60 years, based on a present-day market for small saw bolts. To be sure, pine plantations are intended for industrial use, but this native species can live over 250 years. A management strategy based on successive thinning allows the remaining red pines to reach majestic sizes while providing sawtimber for a century or more. I’ve yet to talk with a forester who thinks the 60-year rotation represents sound forest management. The change in red pine rotation age was followed by a call from then-Governor Mark Dayton for the DNR to increase the timber harvest on all state lands from about 800,000 to one million cords annually. Oddly, this call for increased output corresponded with a historic, severe downturn in the state’s timber industry, marked by ongoing closures of mills across the state. The call for the increase certainly wasn’t demand driven, but was instead an industry-motivated political maneuver intended to depress overall stumpage prices. The DNR wasn’t able to meet the Governor’s request for a million cords, but did find ways to squeeze an additional 100,000 cords per year from state-owned property. Apparently, it wasn’t easy, which leads us back to ramping up commodity production on WMAs. Most WMAs in northern Minnesota are forested. Until very recently, the timber harvests that occurred on those WMAs were planned by wildlife managers to meet habitat objectives; creating better conditions

Purchased with license fees, excise taxes on guns and dedicated conservation funding to provide wildlife habitat and wildlife-related recreation, state Wildlife Management Areas are increasingly being used to produce commodities. | SUBMITTED for game species and other native wildlife. The “problem” was the habitat-driven harvests did not produce a reliable flow of timber volume to meet the new state output objectives. DNR policy makers took the decision-making authority for WMA timber sales away from wildlife managers and gave it to state foresters charged with meeting annual harvest goals. This move triggered strenuous objections from wildlife managers, scientists, conservationists and some members of the outdoor press. It is fair to say DNR leaders slapped down those objections with a heavy hand.

Shawn Perich’s POINTS NORTH online

When you consider these actions as a whole, it seems the pendulum regarding management of lands intended for wildlife has swung in the direction of favoring industry. As industry becomes accustomed to exploiting resources found on WMAs, it will be difficult to push the pendulum back in the other direction. Those of us who appreciate WMAs for their intended purpose and pay for their management and acquisition via user fees and taxes better start thinking about that.

By Michael Furtman Even on the lee shore where the portage ended, waves slapped steadily against the side of the hull as the loaded canoe floated parallel to shore, waiting for us to climb in. On command, the dog deftly leapt aboard, nails finding purchase on the cedar floor. Steadying the canoe, I nodded to Mary Jo, who climbed in next, shaking water from her feet as she entered. Finally, as she braced the canoe with her paddle, I grabbed the ash gunwales and simultaneously shoved off and hopped in. We turned the 17-foot wood and canvas canoe toward the seething expanse of the Boundary Water’s Pine Lake, wind whipped and white capped down its entire length. It was going to be quite the ride. “Are you ready for this?” I called to Mary Jo. She turned, grinned, nodded, and we were off. There aren’t a lot of canoes I’d be comfortable taking into three-foot seas, but this boat, based on an old Canadian design, was built for just such a challenge. A classic design, it was meant for more than a Sunday afternoon paddle. It was made to get you across just about any lake safely, and with dry gear. And it did, surfing on big waves for more than a dozen miles with nary a drop shipped.

My first experience on the water was in my dad’s 1946 square stern wood and canvas Old Town, so I’ve long had an affinity for wood canvas canoes. I’ve paddled my fair share of aluminum, plastic, and Kevlar canoes, and all were just fine. But there is something special about paddling

the canoe country in a boat made mostly of the materials you see along shore. White cedar for the ribs and planks. Ash for the stems, thwarts, and seats. The birch bark of the Ojibwe was replaced by cotton canvas, and spruce roots replaced by brass tacks and bolts, but still they are very much made of the canoe country. Of course, you really should have good spruce beavertail paddles, too, and we do. Call me weird, but I also get a sense of satisfaction knowing that if this canoe were to be hauled ashore and abandoned, it would eventually return to the earth from where it came. Yes, they take a bit more maintenance. Yes, they are heavier. But they are gloriously beautiful, as silent as an otter, and as tough as a moose. Take my word for it. Of course, not every piece of equipment in that canoe was old fashioned. No sir, I’m not nuts enough to lug a 30-pound canvas tent just to be nostalgic. Twenty-some pounds saved by a modern nylon tent is too significant to ignore, as my back can attest. In fact, most of today’s lightweight camping gear is not just superior to the counterparts of the past, they make it possible for many to venture into the Boundary Waters and Quetico that might not otherwise be able to handle the rigors should they have to live like the Voyageurs or Ojibwe.

Having said that, there are tried and true items that have stood the test of time, and are as good a choice today as any of their modern counterparts.

Mostly made of the stuff of the canoe country itself, a wood canvas canoe and tired paddler bask in the evening sun. | MICHAEL FURTMAN The classic canvas canoe pack, made by Duluth Pack or Frost River, is still seen as frequently on portages as any nylon counterpart and for good reason. Some time ago, I did a comparison for a magazine where I loaded canvas packs and nylon packs identically, and put them through the same tests—abrasion resistance on canoe country granite, and water resistance both in the rain and in bilge water. The long and the short of it was that the canvas actually withstood abrasion better and were just as waterproof as the coated nylon. Truth is, they all took on water eventually, and so all should be lined with a replaceable plastic liner.

First on the list is a good birch-handled fillet knife in the style of the Finnish “puukko.” There may be other fillet knives that are as good or even better, but sorry, no plastic handles on my fillet knife. Second, cool weather canoe trips find a good wool shirt in the pack. Warmer than fleece, they’re also much more resistant to sparks from campfires.

For me, the classic design of the #3 Duluth Pack is the ideal gear pack for the canoe country. Most packs, including all “modern” canoe packs, are box style. The #3 is essentially just an envelope. This has two advantages. First, being tapered toward the bottom, it forces more of the load’s weight to be toward the middle and top of the pack, where it should be for comfortable carry. Square bottomed, box shaped packs, tend to be bottom heavy. That’s why they all require hip belts. Speaking of which, a “classic” rule is that you should have most if not all of your load ride below the gunwales for safety and stability. That’s another area where the #3 shines. Laid flat, with its top and bottom to the canoe’s sides, it conforms perfectly to the canoe’s curves. The other tried and true I would not be without is the combination of the old-fashioned trapper’s ash pack basket and a Duluth Pack #2 Cruiser. Yes, the Cruiser is a box pack, but at only 19 inches tall, rises only about seven inches above the gunwales. The ash pack basket? It’s inside the Cruiser. and this has been our food pack for over 30 years of rigorous canoe trips and would easily last a couple of decades more. The ash basket keeps food from being crushed, and the Cruiser provides protection, shoulder straps, and side pockets for water bottles and the day’s lunch and snacks.

Third, a venerable Swiss Army Knife (one with a small saw blade) is always in my pocket, or on my belt.

When going on canoe trips, I always pack a good birch-handled fillet knife in the style of the Finnish “puukko.” I never use a fillet knife with a plastic handle. | MICHAEL FURTMAN

Fourth, a simple, accurate Silva compass is also in my pocket. No batteries required.

Monster walleye fell for a simple jig, yielding a monster smile from the happy angler. | MICHAEL FURTMAN It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway—these packs look great in a classic wood canvas canoe. But they also lend class to our Kevlar boat as well.

Fifth, Fisher F series maps. These blue and yellow maps (half of mine are so old, they’re made of that “parchment” material they once used) have, after some dallying on my part with those from other companies, proven to be my favorites. And finally, I can’t imagine going on a canoe trip without these essential fishing lures: the original balsa Rapala in both the original gold and silver colors; Mepps spinners with squirrel tails; and 1/8 and 1/4 ounce jigs. If you can’t catch walleye, bass, or pike with these, chances are, having every lure in the store wouldn’t have made any difference. They just weren’t biting. Canoe country classics aren’t museum pieces. They aren’t relics. They aren’t inferior.

There are a few other classics that have been, and will always be, along on our canoe trips.

They are choices, though. And pretty damn good ones. NORTHERN  WILDS

DOGS of the Gunflint Trail By Ashley Bredemus (and Arlo the Shiloh Shepherd) The folks who own and operate the many lodges, outfitters, and camps along the Gunflint Trail are undoubtedly a breed of their own. However, if you think the locals are interesting you should meet their dogs—the furry companions who call the Gunflint Trail home, 365 days a year.

Over the summer, I was invited in to rub bellies and throw sticks for a handful of these lucky dogs in exchange for a glimpse into their lives. This is by no means an exhaustive list of pups who live and work on the Gunflint Trail. Many more exist.

Shadow,

Fresca, Gunnar, Jack, ROCKWOOD LODGE

WILDERNESS CAMP

Shadow, the English Springer Spaniel, has been at Gunflint Pines Resort & Campground all of her 13 years—making her the most experienced resort pup on our list. She has hung up her hat as the resident Hiking Guide and, instead, taken up post as the lodge’s Greeter and Candy Bar Protector. While she loved her guiding career in the hiking department of the business, Shadow enjoys the slower pace of lodge life with her two feline siblings. When Shadow’s off duty, you can find her “looking cute” as payment for milk bones or barking and chasing anything shiny.

Rockwood Lodge has not one but three highly skilled resort pups on their team. Fresca (pictured right), the English setter, is the elder of the trio at 12 years old. As the elder, she has retired from her career in the resorting world and spends her days napping in the shade and swimming in the lake. The handsome devil in the middle is 5-year-old Gunnar, a golden retriever/ Lab mix. As the youngest of the team, his days include going over here, going over there, sniffing around, and greeting people...he’s still in training. In his spare time, he chases squirrels and keeps the bears away. Finally, we have 8-year-old English setter, Jack (pictured left). He is Rockwood’s very own Early Alert Technician—If there’s something folks need to be alerted to (especially chipmunks), he’s on it. When he’s not on duty, you can find Jack eating bugs and chasing orange training ducks.

Where the Gunflint Trail ends and the Seagull River begins, you can find this 100lb gentle giant cuddled up next to a camper or two at Birchwood Wilderness Camp. Although the youngest of the resort dogs on our list, Arlo, the 15-month-old Shiloh Shepherd, has found her true calling in life as the (Canine) Camp Mother. When camp is in session, she holds herself responsible for the happiness of each and every camper by licking faces, singing (howling) along to camp songs, and providing dog hugs as needed. But don’t let her sweetness fool you, Arlo has a zero-tolerance policy for bears and horse play in camp. Of her many responsibilities, Arlo’s favorite job is waiting on the dock to greet campers as they return from Boundary Waters canoe trips. During the summer months, Arlo is so busy keeping track of her 50 campers that she doesn’t take much time off.

Buddy,

HUNGRY JACK LODGE

His friends call him Buddy but his business card reads “Sir Buddy of Hungry Jack Lodge.” Born and raised at the mid-Gunflint Trail lodge, this 12-year-old springer spaniel is highly skilled at his work as Entertainment Director. Buddy’s work requires him to put in many miles on hiking trails with campers and many hours on the beach, which is arguably his favorite part of the job. This seasoned resort dog takes his work very seriously, only clocking out for the occasional snow day in the off season. Otherwise, if there’s a customer in need of entertainment, he’s on the job!

Scout,

GUNFLINT LODGE A cuddle bug at heart, 7-year-old Scout is the king of the docks at Gunflint Lodge. With four years of resort experience in the bag, this whip smart border collie has perfected the art of greeting guests with his charming blue and brown eyes. When Scout isn’t being loved up by guests and staff (his favorite part of the job), you can find him fetching the frisbee—this little guy has some serious spring in his step!

Bosley,

VOYAGEUR CANOE OUTFITTERS Meet Bosley of Voyageur Canoe Outfitters. This rambunctious 1-and-a-half-year-old Australian shepherd only knows one way of life—the resort dog way. Bosley takes his career very seriously. He begins each day with his morning rounds, which consists of a routine bunk house check to make sure guests are happy, followed by a pancake scrap cleanup in the main lodge. He often pencils in a few tow-boat rides with his dad after breakfast to pick up guests and, after his mandatory mid-day nap, Bosley greets the next round of guests with a smile and his signature butt wiggle. While he loves everything about his occupation, he finds fulfillment in his morning routine of roaming the property to make sure everything and everyone is in order. When he’s not on the job, you can find Bosley swimming with the staff or chasing the local wildlife. In the winter, when work slows down, you’ll find him sneaking off to visit his girlfriend, Arlo, at the nearby summer camp.

Ladie Bird,

POPLAR HAUS It’s no easy task being the resident pup at a top notch eating establishment and resort on the Gunflint Trail, but Ladie Bird of Poplar Haus makes it look effortless. At 7 (and a half) years old, this yellow Labrador retriever has been passionately growing her responsibilities in the lodge for almost four years. Aside from her basic duties of greeting guests, she has also taken on the tasks of menu quality control, late night cuddler, babysitter and property security. Her favorite part of the job comes down to a tie between all the wonderful people she gets to meet and the chef’s (her dad’s) cooking. Although her days on the clock are jam-packed, Ladie Bird still finds time for rock diving, chipmunk watching, swimming and sunbathing.

Maisy Mae,

BIG BEAR LODGE Big Bear Lodge is home to miss Maisy Mae, the 10-year-old Newfoundland. With six years of resort experience under her fluffy belt, Maisy’s daily tasks include greeting guests and giving the “resort report.” However, her passion lies in meeting and greeting with her gentle energy and cuddly floof. When she’s not on the clock, Maisy Mae loves to go for a dip in the lake and catch up on sleep. NORTHERN  WILDS

“When I first started,” says Wick, “there were few resources out there for the exact type of weaving that I was interested in, so I learned mostly by trial and error.” “It took me a while to feel like I’d developed my own ‘voice’ in my work,” continues Wick, “and it is, and I assume it always will be, an ongoing process. I was familiar with the idea of a unique voice from being a writer—rough drafts, editing, reworking, polishing—and have enjoyed applying that mindset to my work as a weaver.”

CREATIVE SPACE: By Eric Weicht As one of the newest members to the North Shore art community, rising artist Emily Wick finds modern expression in a craft that is almost 30,000 years old— weaving.

Wick recently acquired a much larger loom, and has started to work on weaving rugs in addition to her other woven works. Weaving rugs is something that Wick hopes to “dig into” in the near future.

Using a frame loom, a tool that she covets both for its simplicity and portability, Emily specializes in crafting decorative woven wall hangings, as well as household goods such as pillows, coasters and jewelry. Wick prefers to adventure with her loom and weave in a variety of outdoor landscapes, the very landscapes whose essence she strives to capture in her work.

Faced with fewer in-person sales opportunities due to COVID-19, Wick has been focusing her energies on finding ways to “show-up online” and recently launched an initiative of made-to-order wall hangings in her moonrise design. Wick is hopeful that the fall and winter will provide opportunities for local holiday and pop-up shows, but understands that such events are anything but certain.

“I find a lot of inspiration from nature, particularly bodies of water and celestial bodies,” says Wick. “Lake Superior and the boreal forest surrounding it are particularly inspiring to me and my work, and it is my hope that my weavings connect people to these beloved places.” In addition to the natural world, Wick finds inspiration in shapes, incorporating a variety of shapes into her work at different moments throughout her journey as an artist. “When I first started weaving,” says Wick, “I focused a lot on diamonds. Lately though, I’ve been obsessed with the delightful challenge of weaving circles, something that is both difficult to master and thrilling when you get it right.” Wick’s journey as a weaver has its roots in her decision to move from the Twin Cities

CORY COFFMAN

Musical Metamorphosis JAMS: By Will Moore The closing of music venues has caused musicians all over to change tack, and in the process, look for new ways to get creative with their art. For Duluth’s Cory Coffman, that means reinventing his sound and striking out on his own For the last few years, he’s been part of The Cuckoo Bees, a trio that creates spooky folk-poppy tunes utilizing xylophones and other unusual percussion. Now that project has ended, and he’s branching out into becoming a one-man singer-songwriter act. “The Cuckoo Bees was kind of fun for me because it was forcing me to be right up front with the microphone and a guitar,” says Coffman. “I’ve always played guitar and always been a writer and this kind of pushed me to get to that point and to get comfortable.” Though now primarily a guitarist, Coffman says he’s a drummer by trade. It’s an instrument that’s in his blood. His father was a drummer for a metal band in the 80s, and his brother followed in those footsteps. His grandfather taught percussion at UMD, and even his grandmother played timpani in an orchestra.

“There was a drum set in the basement always and at any time you wanted to run down there and go bang on it, that was welcome in our house; it was always there and accessible,” says Coffman. Growing up he says he played drums in a number of punk bands, often having to sing at the same time. “I didn’t love being that and I don’t think I’d do that again, being the singing drummer,” he says. “But actually, interesting enough it really kind of developed another level of independence. That really helped develop comfort in playing drums, but then also vocalizing over another layer.” Even with a punk background, Coffman’s sound with his solo work is a lot more soothing and heartfelt. His new acoustic songs fit in with the backdrop of a coffee shop, allowing the listener to focus on his clever lyrics while he’s strumming chill-out grooves. Often times he’ll add in foot percussion or loop several guitar tracks over each other. “It’s really making me up my game with my guitar playing,” says Coffman. “It makes me think about the parts that

The show must go on!

I have right...trying to maybe cover some of those parts and try to play a bass part here and there with it. It’s got a sort of freeing side to it as well, like I could just change the structure of a song on the fly.” His first objective down the solo path is putting out a record of original material. He’s already nearly completed his first album, containing both new songs and some re-worked Cuckoo Bees tracks. “This is sort of been my project ever since the whole lockdown thing has happened,” says Coffman. “I really buckled down just using the gear that I have in our apartment. Most of the songs are still arranged with a bass and with drums and some minimal keyboard parts, which I had fun doing all the above.”

completing songs all by himself. And he will be busy, as he says he has enough songs in the works for a second record. “I’m sitting on kind of a big bank of songs that I hadn’t really gotten to recording. I used to write for a long time,” he says. “I was writing and never recording or showing anyone, so now I’m sort of trying to catch up, which is kind of a good problem to have. There’s never a shortage of things for me to work on.” Cory Coffman’s debut solo record “Canvas and Color” is expected to come out sometime in the fall. An animated music video for the title track is expected to be released in August, and he says there will be many more videos to follow.

On the recording, Coffman plays every instrument. He says he enjoys starting and

Coffee shops demonstrate sisu in Northshore communities T B AY ON

GRAND MARAIS—Small businesses in Lutsen and Grand Marais are rallying grassroots support for members of their small community in need—via sales of bagged coffee. One unusual aspect is that competing coffee shops (Fika Coffee and Java Moose) are coming together to make it happen. Fika Coffee and Java Moose—and design company Hoaglund Designs—are launching the Sisu Coffee Project (sisucoffeeproject.com). The name Sisu is a Finnish word capturing the idea of one’s ability to keep fighting against the odds. According to the website, “It’s with the spirit of Sisu that we want to hold up and honor all of the Cook County residents who have put their grit, bravery, tenacity of purpose and resilience forward to carve out a life of their own on our rugged North Shore.” They’re be selling a special blend with $10 from each 12oz bag going to support members of the community selected via a nomination process on their website. They

envision proceeds funding things like groceries, rent, heating bills and diapers. Sisu coffee will be sold in-store at Fika Coffee and Java Moose, as well as online from both businesses.

The North Shore Dish North Shore Classics from the Big Lake By Chuck Viren

Early settlers to the North Shore were predominantly Scandinavian, and many depended on the bounty of fish in Lake Superior for both income and sustenance. Fish caught in large quantities needed to be preserved. Fishermen would salt fish and pack them in barrels; these fish would be sold and transported by ship. The smoking of fish was done to preserve fish. The tradition of making fish cakes in this area has a distinct Scandinavian flair and is related to the abundance of freshwater herring. Generations of area families have passed on their treasured fish cake recipes. These recipes are often closely guarded secrets and sometimes the subject of intense competition between neighbors. Two businesses with multi-generational connections to commercial fishing and smoked fish are Russ Kendall’s smokehouse in Knife River and the newly formed The Fisherman’s Daughter in Grand Marais. Kathryn Nelson-Pedersen of Grand Marais generously shares fish cake making secrets and anecdotes about the importance of fish cakes in her family and that of her husband, Mark Pedersen.

Gordy Olson is a third-generation co-owner of Russ Kendall’s Smoke House in Knife River, having married Russ Kendall’s daughter Kristi. Their son Cody is actively involved in the business, and the fifth generation is already running around. Kristi’s grandfather, William Kendall, was a railroad mechanic who was familiar with Knife River, as there had been a logging railroad spur in the area. William got involved with renting boats; he began smoking fish in 1908. They use the same methods to smoke the fish as William did then, methods that were passed on to him by an Anishinaabe friend. The Kendalls use a three-day process to prepare their fish. On the first day they soak the fish in a salt-water brine. On day two they smoke the fish using a hot smoking process that takes about 10 hours to complete. The third is chill day, where the fish are placed in a cooler. Gordy says that smoking fish is 20 percent science and 80 percent an art form. If the fish is heated too quickly, it can actually burst. The fish is started out at cooler temperatures, with the doors to the smokehouse open, until it is dry to the touch. From then the fish gains much of its flavor. Most of the heat isn’t added until the last 26

At the store, they focus on selling products that were important to the lives of the Anishinaabe; in addition to their fish, they sell wild rice and maple syrup. them an easily identifiable landmark while they were in their fishing boats.

Abby Tofte has the multi-generational pedigree. She is descended from the original settlers of Tofte, John and Andrew Tofte and Hans Engelsen, who married Andrew Tofte’s sister Johanna after an early life of adventure that included working on the ship that brought the Statue of Liberty to New York. The town name came from the area he had lived in Norway. Evidently, they chose that location to settle because Carlton Peak could be seen clearly, giving

When Dockside Fish Market was left without a proprietor late last year, Abby, owner, along with her husband Sam Hedstrom, of The Big Lake in Grand Marais, was immediately interested because of her family ties to the commercial fishing industry. She and Sam, along with Kate and Jeremy Keeble of the Hungry Hippie Hostel and Hungry Hippie Tacos, jumped at the chance to get involved. Their mission is to promote what they call herring heritage.

Essentially, they wish to honor the heritage of commercial fishing in the area and to elevate the status of, as Kate says, “the misunderstood fish.” Herring was a staple of the commercial fishing in the area. They also wish to support and promote the work of local fishermen Eric Brisson, Tyler Smith and Zach Smith, who took over after Harley Tofte retired. While they have had to downsize their plans due to the Covid-19 outbreak, they have re-opened the restaurant—now called The Fisherman’s Daughter—with the Dockside classics, such and fish and chips, as revised by Kate’s culinary imagination. As she works to expand the menu, one of her goals is to feature herring in as many ways as possible. Rumor has it they will be debuting a herring sandwich in the near future. They initially had planned to develop their own brines and smoke fish, but the delays caused by the pandemic put those plans on hold for now, though their smoked herring dip is made from maple syrup brined herring smoked by Jeremy.

They are currently selling smoked fish produced by Everett’s Fisheries of Port Wing, Wisc. Everett’s is another multi-generational family-owned business that does their own fishing on Lake Superior and uses a salt-brined process that has been passed down for many generations. The Fisherman’s Daughter also plans to re-introduce traditional fish cakes after they are able to open the retail portion of the business. They currently sell a non-traditional version that is prepared more like a crab cake that they have named the North Shore Nug. It is made from herring and includes onions, scallions and dill. Kathryn Nelson-Pedersen’s great grandparents emigrated into this area on her father’s side of the family. When her mother married into the family, it was incumbent upon her to learn to make fish cakes. The Nelson’s celebrated their Norwegian heritage, and fish cakes were a prominent part of Kathryn’s life from an early age. They were eaten at Christmas, at church, and at family gatherings.

RESTAURANT GUIDE

When Kathryn married Mark Pedersen, whose family used to own and operate the East Bay Hotel, she had to navigate the uneasy waters of rival fish cake recipes. The Pedersens featured their fish cakes at the restaurant at the East Bay Hotel. Kathryn says that her current recipe is a hybrid of the two family recipes. Kathryn was willing to share some secrets about the process of making fish cakes. She starts with skinless herring filets. These are put through a meat grinder. Minced onion is added, and the fish goes through the grinder a second time. She then adds a combination of evaporated milk and half and half. Melted, and cooled, butter is added along with eggs and some spices. This mixture is beaten for quite a while. Lastly, salt is added, and this mixture beaten until it thickens enough to pull away from the bowl. The mixture is fried in a skillet with oil. If the mixture was prepared properly, the cakes should puff up a bit when fried. PICK UP

Kathryn says that after her father passed away, they made 500 fish cakes for the memorial dinner. Also worth noting is Lou’s Fish House in Two Harbors, offering it’s “world famous” smoked-fish and shrimp, as well as cheese and ice cream. Originally owned by Lou Sjoberg, the store is now owned by Ashleigh Swanson and offers everything from smoked sugar lake trout and smoked whitefish, to smoked Cajun salmon and honey salmon, smoked herring, and peppercorn salmon. They also offer fish platters with artisan cheeses and crackers. Lou’s Fish House is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. (and until 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday). The heritage of the North Shore is centered around the Big Lake, and those who lived here in those early days relied on fish for survival and income. We are the beneficiaries of that heritage and the recipes that have survived for generations.

What Will We Make of This? By Hartley Newell-Acero Sometimes we happily invite change into our lives: accepting a new job, getting married, moving to a new home. Sometimes unwanted change finds us in the form of individual loss, lack, pain, or sadness. Rarely though, has so much change descended upon our whole species as quickly and as completely as it has in the last few months. Each of us is reacting to these changes in our own way, and we’re also experiencing and responding to it as members of communities.

Now is the time for us to consciously decide: do we automatically try to replicate what was, even the parts that didn’t work all that well, simply because that’s what we know how to do? Or will we choose to take what worked best and use those things as tools to make something new? If we choose the latter, we have to accept some realities: creation takes effort, our endeavors won’t always work out the way we hope, we may have to start over, again, we will get tired and frustrated, with ourselves and others. So, what will we make of all this? How do we explain this time to our-

Taking the time to relax and calm your mind can help you to focus on carrying through with courageous actions. For many of us, our initial individual and group reaction was to throw ourselves into a flurry of activity. Some of us worked longer hours, and some of us volunteered, but almost everyone felt the drive to do something to help. After the initial panic subsided, the grind began. It’s difficult having every aspect of our lives impacted and constantly having to find ways to navigate the unanticipated, and mostly unwanted, ripple effects that global changes are having on our personal lives. Now we are faced with the knowledge that there is no going back to the way things were. Our lives, communities, and world are and will be different. We didn’t choose these changes. However, we have a choice in how we respond to them and what we choose to make of them. And make something of them we will—whether we do so purposely or unintentionally.

Some people have a “fixed mindset.” They tend to believe that their basic intelligence and abilities are pretty much predetermined. You get what you get and just have to do the best you can with it. They avoid failure because they see it as a reminder of how limited they are. Some people have a “growth mindset.” They believe that their abilities can grow and develop with time and effort. They don’t fear failure as much because they see it as a way to learn and improve. They may even question the very idea of failure, since learning is their main goal. We are all living through a difficult time, but it is possible to move on from panic, without retreating to hide

Northern Trails Three Classic Lures from cork. To mimic the flash of a baitfish, he used tinfoil from a chocolate bar on the lure’s outer surface. Melted photographic negatives sealed the plug. The most important thing, however, was how well the whittled cork plug approximated the action of a minnow. Legend has it that Lauri Rapala sometimes caught 600 pounds of fish a day with his new, home-made lure. The lure’s reputation grew—crossed into North America—and the rest is history. Lauri Rapala’s simple original floating minnow design remains a fish killer to this day.

By Gord Ellis

Classic fishing lures are those that have stood the test of time, and survived the whims of the market. The list of lures that makes this list is remarkably short, considering the jaw dropping number of products that have been unleashed over the past 100 years. The great thing about classic fishing lures is they remain fish catchers to this day. These three lures should be a part of every angler’s collection.

Like a lot of Canadian kids who were nuts about angling, I grew up seeing Rapala minnows in the tackle boxes of anglers. My hometown of Thunder Bay also has more Finns per capita than anywhere else outside of Helsinki, and having Rapala minnows on the line was a source of “old country” pride for many anglers of the Finnish extraction. It was not hard to find them for sale in the Lakehead, even in the early 1970s. The first walleye I ever caught on a plug hit a silver floating Rapala weighted with a rubber core sinker and trolled along bottom. I can also remember casting an oversized Rapala floating minnow for pike on Thunder Bay’s waterfront. To this day, the floating minnow is a deadly presentation, and accounts for everything from salmon on downriggers to bass in the lily pads to Lake Superior coaster brook trout up close to shore.

Eppinger Dardevle The red and white spoon is a standard bearer for northern pike anglers in Canada and the northern United States. Although many have made a red and white spoon, the Eppinger company made the original. The story goes that company founder Lou Eppinger spent a month alone in the Ontario wilderness, fishing and camping. He used a lure of his own design that looked like a spoon. The metal was thinner in the middle and thicker toward the edges. When he cast it into the shallows it would swing from side to side, flashing its colours.

Mepps Aglia Spinner If you are a trout angler, and have fished with a “Mepps” spinner, the odds are it was an Aglia spinner. This is the classic “French style” trout spinner, with a simple, fail-safe design that can be cast or trolled, fished with a bait or without. The Mepps spinner was the very first lure I ever used to catch a brook trout, and it will always have a special place in my tackle box.

Although the #3 Mepps Aglia is maybe the best trout catcher ever made, the lure is equally deadly on other species. The silver bladed Mepps Aglia is especially good at catching smallmouth bass, and is one of the secret lures that tournament bass anglers don’t talk about. When bass or trout are busting minnows on the surface, the spinner is unbelievably effective. A must have for steelhead as well.

Rapala Floating Minnow

that big fish eat little fish, especially those acting erratically. Rapala fished the waters of Finland’s Lake Paijanne, and saw how large predators would always focus on an injured minnow. He decided it was time to make something that would mimic that injured wobble. In 1936, using a shoemaker’s knife, some sandpaper, and his imagination, Rapala created his first prototype lure

Some things just never get old. These three classic lures remain ageless and timeless.

Cook County, Minnesota

About 15 years ago, I had an opportunity to fish with Lou Eppinger’s great grandson in Saskatchewan. Not only did I get to hear stories of Lou and his fishing exploits, but also got to fish with a bunch of different Eppinger products. We caught pike, walleye and lakers on them all, but the red and white Dardevle was the rock star. It still rules.

A French engineer named Andre Meulnart invented the original Mepps spinner back in 1938. Although he knew he had come up with a good bait, he probably didn’t realize his lure would be the basis of a huge boom in the fishing tackle industry. It would take a World War and an unusual series of events to do that. It would also take the vision of a man who realized the lure’s full potential. In 1951, Todd Sheldon discovered the Mepps spinner. Sheldon, who was the owner of a tackle store in Antigo, Wisc., was having a bad day on the water. He decided to try something different, and tied on a small Mepps spinner. The lure had been given to him by a WWII GI who had returned from Europe two years earlier. The story goes that within two hours, Sheldon had landed four trout weighing more than 12 pounds total. The rest is history.

Where the Fish Are!

By 1912, Lou turned his prototype into a finished lure, called the Osprey. It was deadly on pike. Six years later, Lou’s nephew Ed came to work for his uncle and they changed the name to Dardevle after the “Teufelhunden,” or “Devil Dogs,” the name given by the Germans to the 4th Marine Brigade. The allies then called the U.S. Marines “Dare Devils.” The red and white Dardevle became the standard bearer of the brand.

Public Water Access WHERE CAN YOU GO? GRAND MARAIS—Summer is when many Minnesotans seek access to the state’s wealth of water. Most often, they do so at a publicly-owned place such as a state park, a boat launch or a swimming beach. In these situations, the public’s right to access is clear. In other instances, where private property is involved, some folk’s assumptions about the extent of public access may not be true in Minnesota.

The public has access to what Minnesota terms “waters of the state.” Waters of the state are any surface waters or underground waters. This includes all lakes, ponds, marshes, rivers, streams, ditches, springs and waters from underground aquifers, regardless of their size or location. If you have public access to water, you can boat, fish and swim there. The catch is public access.

Seeking clarification regarding access isn’t easy. While it isn’t always apparent in the north, Minnesota is an agriculturally dominated state, so some trespass laws were written with agricultural interests in mind. For instance, it is legal to access unposted private forest land, but it is illegal to enter unposted agricultural land whether it is actively farmed or fallow.

Decades ago, legendary DNR commissioner Joe Alexander made it his mission to open public access sites such as boat and canoe landings, on all state lakes and streams. While he was unable to completely achieve this goal during his 12-year tenure, he greatly expanded and upgraded access sites we enjoy today.

Along the North Shore, some believe the public has access to the Lake Superior shoreline up to the ordinary high-water level, which is where permanent vegetation begins. Their assumption is based on the Public Trust Doctrine, which is rooted in English law that has long affirmed public access to America’s seashores. While a Michigan court case affirmed the public’s right to Great Lakes beach access, the ruling doesn’t apply to Minnesota. In this state, you DO NOT have access to the Lake Superior beach on private property unless you are in the water. The same is true for trout streams and inland lakes.

However, public access is not only defined by officially designated sites. Where public land, be it a state or national forest or a road right-of-way, abuts the water, the public has access. In practical terms, if you can launch a canoe in a creek crossing the road and paddle through private property to reach a lake, that is public access to the lake. In a trout stream or any flowing water, you have access provided you can reach the water from public property, such as a road crossing, and stay in the water while wading or floating. In a document titled Water Laws in Minnesota, Questions and Answers about

FREE BOAT WASH

Public beaches are open to everyone. | KEN GRESHOWAK Minnesota Water Laws, the Minnesota DNR sums up the extent of pubic access with the following question and response: What is considered trespassing when the public seeks access to a water body? The belief that the state owns a strip of land around all Minnesota lakes for public use is false. Riparian property (Property abutting a lake, river or wetland) is either privately or publicly owned. The general public can access water bodies or watercourses via public property, but not through private property. Individuals entering private property without permission from the landowner are trespassing and may be prosecuted under state trespass laws. It is illegal to trespass on private property in order to gain access to a

water body or watercourse without first obtaining the verbal or written permission from the landowner. A person who has legally gained access to a water body may use its entire surface for recreation, such as boating, swimming, or fishing. Using the underlying bed of the lake or river, if access was gained legally, is called “incidental use;” the use of the bed or bottom is incidental to the water body’s primary use. Examples include poling or anchoring a boat, wading on the bed to swim or fish, and anchoring decoys and traps. The bottom line is that if you’re uncertain about land ownership, do some research to determine if you do have public access. It is better to be safe than sorry. —Shawn Perich

Robert Service

The True Adventures of Yukon’s Favourite Bard By Elle Andra-Warner Heritage House, 2019

Robert Service, whose name is forever linked with such well-known epic Yukon ballads as The Cremation of Sam McGee, and The Shooting of Dan McGrew, was a restless adventurer and spinner of tales. In Elle Andra-Warner’s biography of Robert Service, the scope of his life opens like a flower in spring sunlight, revealing a man of an astonishing variety of experience well beyond that of the gold rush days of the Yukon. Although modest about his written work— “Verse, not poetry, is what I was after ... I belonged to the simple folks whom I liked to please,”—his adventures, albeit embellished as years went on, were the stuff of legend. He managed not only to live as a sourdough, or seasoned veteran of far-northern life, but later drove an ambulance and acted as stretcher bearer near the front lines in World War I. While living in France in the first years of World War II, he and his family had several narrow escapes from advancing German forces before reaching the safety of North America by a wild, circuitous route.—Peter Fergus-Moore

Showing off our tanned deer, sheep and fish skins along the walkway to the Crannog. | LUCY SKINNER

A week of ancestral skills in the Scottish highlands by Julia Prinselaar

knitted wool sweater and a green and black kilt, Peter stepped out of his car and immediately embraced me with a warm smile and a hug. His girlfriend Maggie, a Forest School teacher from England, opened the passenger door and soon followed suit.

A light mist hung in the air as I disembarked from the train at Pitlochry rail station. The rural hamlet, nestled in the central Scottish highlands, was my first stop since leaving the country’s bustling capital of Edinburgh earlier that afternoon.

“So good to meet you!” exclaimed Peter. It was mid-August of last year, and six months prior to meeting I began making arrangements to attend a traditional hide tanning course co-hosted by him and his assistant, a Dutchman named Steven Dirven. With those plans finally coming to fruition, I had arrived in the United Kingdom the day before and we were a 40-minute drive from the rest of our group at the hide camp.

I walked across the station’s empty parking lot and rested my backpack at the foot of a moss-covered stone wall while I waited for my course instructor, Peter Ananin, to arrive. Within minutes, a bright green sedan crossed a bridge and wound its way along the single-track road in my direction. As the vehicle entered the parking lot and approached my pile of gear, Peter gave a spirited wave from behind the wheel and pulled up beside me. A bundle of dried heather tucked inside a small pouch made from a tanned animal bladder swung from the rear-view mirror like a pendulum as he released the clutch and put the brakes on the car.

Our group would spend a week at The Scottish Crannog Centre, a historical reenactment site built to resemble ancient life in the Iron Age along the banks of Loch Tay on the outskirts of Kenmore. I joined 12 other people participating in the camp who came from The Netherlands, Norway, other parts of the United Kingdom, and Canada. We were all in pursuit of a common

goal: to tan deer, fish and sheep skins using traditional methods. Scotland’s pastoral farmers support about 7 million sheep across a country renowned not only for bucolic idylls, but also a damp climate (some of its wettest regions receive an average of 250 days of rain per year). Fortunately for sheep, their wool contains lanolin, a waxy substance that naturally allows the animals to shed moisture from their coats. Suitably, the tanning method we used with tree bark causes the skin to contract and deter water, explains Steven. “Although tannins on their own don’t necessarily make leather waterproof, it depends on the type of animal skin: how it is treated before tannins are applied, what kind of tannins, and in which way it is applied. And last but not least, how you treat the leather. Tanned hides allow the application of fat, oil and wax making a waterproof coating,” he said. On the first day our group gathered and peeled the bark from nearby willow, alder

and oak branches and boiled it in a large pot of water over an open fire. The barks contain tannins, the bitter, astringent-tasting plant extract which bind with proteins in skin to transform it into leather.

WTIP’s Boundary Waters Podcast

Between several applications of the tree bark infusion, we dried the sheepskins over a smoldering fire—the wafting smoke is a natural preservative and also aids in the softening process. Next, we worked the skins over rounded posts to open and stretch the fibers in a process called breaking. Finally, we coated the skin with fat and oils and worked it once more until supple and dry. There’s something transformative that happens when a group of people set up camp together to share ancient skills, which at some point in our lineages each of our ancestors had practiced—in this case, turning animal skins into useable leather. Over the course of a week we formed a small community, relying on one another to prepare meals, to keep our shared space tidy, to listen when we experienced personal revelations, and to offer support after a challenging day of physical labor. During times of rest and relaxation we shared stories and songs by an open fire, and slept peaceful hours until waking time when Steven would sing the rest of the group out of slumber. “Crafting in a group, if possible with materials from your close surroundings, makes us aware of being part of this bigger community, and able to develop a relationship with all its members. A deerskin you turned into a dress is much more than a dress alone. The memories of making it,

And a new way to look to other materials—even your normal jeans won’t quite be the same,” explains Steven. “When creating community, we often forget the non-human partakers: other animals, the elements, climate and the items that make us capable to be where we are.

In the present time we are less likely to be aware of the non-human part of our community, even though they are ever-present. There is a sense [today] that we are no longer part of the rest of nature, even though we are still depending just as much as in any time in history on the land, water, the sun and all others that together shape our world to feed us, dress us and keep us warm,” he said.

NORTHERN SKY AUGUST 2020 By Deane Morrison, MN STARWATCH

FREE

SATURDAY, AUG. 29TH

Summer starts to fade in August, but with the loss come darker skies and longer hours to watch stars and planets. The month starts out with a nearly full moon rising the evening of the 2nd. That night it follows Saturn and Jupiter across the sky, becoming full at 10:59 a.m. on the 3rd. However, that morning it sets over Grand Marais at 5:17 a.m. To see this moon at its roundest, go outside far enough ahead of moonset to catch it before it sinks in the southwest. The waning moon proceeds to sail through the fall constellations Capricornus and Aquarius. On the night of the 6th-7th it appears below the ring-shaped Circlet of Pisces, a somewhat dim figure below the brighter Great Square of Pegasus. On the 7th-8th, a still hefty moon travels the night sky in company with Mars. Earth is closing in on Mars in the race around the sun, and so Mars looks considerably bigger and brighter than usual. It’s up in the east by midnight and, surround-

7

ed by only dim stars, unmistakable. If you go out to see the predawn sky, Mars will be high in the southeast while Venus, also unmistakable, blazes away low in the east. On the 15th Venus and a crescent moon appear next to the feet of the Gemini twin Castor. The Perseid meteor shower is predicted to peak between late night and dawn on the 11th-12th, but the nights before and after could also be good. Typically fast and bright, Perseids stream from the northeast, and many leave persistent trails. But the moon reaches last quarter phase on the 11th, so it, too, will be fairly bright during the peak hours on all three nights. Let’s hope the vaunted Perseid brightness allows a good number of them to cut through the moon’s glare.

Strange Tales The luxury yacht that replaced the America By Elle AndraWarner

Ever wonder what happened to those famous luxurious steam yachts owned by the wealthy in what some call the “Gilded Age” before the First World War? Some were sold to the U.S. government for war service like the Itasca and Comanche; some sank like the Gunilda; and some were sold to foreign governments like the 214-foot steel yacht Alvina which was sold to the Russian government. And then there is the Dungeness, the luxury yacht that was built in 1894 at a cost of $490,000 (2020 equivalent $14.7 million)—one of the most lavish vessels of its time—that eventually became a fish boat on Lake Superior. The 115-foot long Dungeness was built in Sparrows Point, Maryland and designed by George A. Mallory, for devoted yachtswoman Mrs. Lucy Coleman Carnegie, the widow of wealthy steel magnate Thomas Carnegie, the younger brother of the tycoon and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. With her yacht in 1894, Lucy Carnegie was the first woman to join the exclusive New York Yacht Club. After her 43-year-old husband Thomas died in 1886, Lucy, who has been described as a “lady of immense wealth,” refused offers by her brother-inlaw Andrew to buy her out. As a single parent, she raised their nine children (the youngest was 5 and eldest 19 when Thomas died), finished their famous mansion Dungeness on Cumberland Island, Georgia (she had a staff of 200) and built houses for all her children. In 1898—just four years after being built—the Dungeness was sold to Michigan’s wealthy lumber baron Frank W. Fletcher, who renamed the yacht Winyah. The article went on to say that in the past two years, their catches totalled 20 million pounds, valued at an estimated $600,000 (2020 equivalent $9.1 million). October was the busiest shipping month for fresh fish and, during Christmas season, more than 500,000 pieces of lutefisk were sold. CATCHLIGHT

blue heron I’ve watched the blue herons on a section of the Baptism River for a few years now, and most of the time they get scared off before I have a chance to get a good shot. On this particular day, this heron must have been extra hungry, because I was about 20 feet away and it still proceeded to search for food. If you look close, you can see a minnow in mid-air in its mouth. —Dustin LaVigne NORTHERN  WILDS
