Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot. Monday 11th March 2024.

Prime Hoggs

More hoggs were forward, with new buyers around the ring ensuring a sharp trade. Texel hoggs topped at £210 from J France, Pilling with Beltexs to £208 from the same home and other pens to £206. Heavy Texel hoggs sold to £204 from GH Sanderson, Preston with many pens of heavy bred continental hoggs selling at £190 to £195. The best bred hoggs were keenly sort after, with Beltexs to 422p/kg from KA Purtill, Wigan and Texels to 420p/kg from the same home. Numerous pens were 400p/kg plus. A large offering of hill bred hoggs were forward, with Mules to £175 from DR Preston, Caton and a ring full of Mashams to £175 from T&D Wright, Wray. Pens of Cheviots sold to £171 from KA Purtill, Wigan with Lonks to £164 from S Bosworth, Burnley and Dalebreds to £158 A&MA Wright, Wray. A pen of 34kg well finished Dalesbred hoggs sold to £1230 or 362p/kg. A pen of 29kg Herdwicks sold to £97 from W Gardner, Brookhouse.

Suffolks sold to £160 from E Lund & Son, Carnforth. The strongest Mules sold to £140 from J France, Pilling with other pens to £128 from J Burr, Over Wyresdale. Lonks sold to £126 from S Bosworth, Burnley who sold other pens to £112.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

A real buzz was seen around the ewe and lamb ring and many more could have been easily sold to the vendors advantage. Aged Texel ewes with Beltex twin lambs from TR Gorst, Ellel who sold to £315 with other outfits with twins selling to £295. An aged Beltex cross ewe with a single Beltex lamb sold to £245 a unit or £122 a life. Other singles from the same home sold to £240 on three separate occasions. The run of aged Mule ewes with Texel twins from D&K Swarbrick, Out Rawcliffe saw their best sell to £255, with others to £250. Vendors are urged to enter sheep with lambs at foot with confidence at Lancaster.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs. Weekly Sale of Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep. Opening Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Tuesday 12th March 2024.

Pigs

An increased entry of 108 pigs forward from throughout the Northern Countries, North Wales and South Scotland. Prime pigs sold to a top price of £155 for a trio of gilts from W Stamper, Chipping. With other gilts selling to £152 from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake with lighter weight gilts selling to £145 from BR Harrison, Staveley. Other prime pigs generally £110-£130 depending on breed, quality and type with buyers showing preference towards gilts and hoggs and caution towards boars. Best prime pigs sold to 163p/kg from BR Harrison, Staveley with other generally 115-125p/kg. Cull sows sold to £170 and 68p/kg from T Hornsby, Silloth. Store and Weaner pigs sold to £52 for Oxford Sandy Black hoggs from R Hargreaves, Clitheroe with Large White x selling to £50 from A & E Clarkson, Cockerham with weaners selling to £41 from JGE Heseltine & Son, Skipton.

Prime Hoggs

35 pens of hoggs sold between £200-£234/head. Leading the way was a pen of Suffolks from AG Butler, Hambleton sold to £234, with pens of Texel selling to £233 from A Brown, Littledale. With pens of Beltex selling to £230 from C Preston, Whicham. Best bred hoggs saw Texels sell to 475p/kg from V & EJ Chadwick & Sons, Sowerby. With Beltex selling to 470p/kg from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston. A large show of hill bred hoggs were forward that saw Cheviot sell to £214 from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill who sold other to £207. Mules hoggs sold to £194 from FI & ME Little, Kendal with other pens selling to £186 from Long & Knipe, Ulverston. Pens of Masham sold to £184 from DE & J Waine, Longsleddale with a pen of 23 Scotch hoggs selling to £180 from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill with other 43kg Scotch hoggs selling to £172 from GM & A Jackson, Little Eccleston with the other same good home selling Swaledale to £170. Dalesbred hoggs sold to £170 from WI & AM Atkinson & Son, Bleasdale with a pen of 10 Rough Fell hoggs from RJ & OB Simpson, Longsleddale selling to £169 with other pens of Rough Fells selling to £168 from G & ID Postlethwaite, Howgill. Another increasing number of ewes forward with an overall average of £101.75 with over half the entry being pure bred hill ewes. Heavy pure ewes sold to £285 for Texel x from R & E Ladds, Kendal and others at £270 from A Brown, Lancaster with other regularly £190-£230. First cross ewes sold to £182 for Texel x from W Garnett & Son, Milnthorpe others at £175 from AW Crowe, Witherslack with other heavy ends regularly £150-£170, mediums £130-£145 with smaller meated sorts to £92-£105. Mules sold to a top of £136 from AW Crowe, Witherslack with others at £134 from MJ Shepherd, Newbiggin, £130 from H Parker, Bentham with other heavy mules regularly £122-£130 with mediums to £102-£115. Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The opening sale of sheep and lambs starts with a bang with a massive ringside of travelled buyers ensuring a flying trade with a pen of aged Texel ewes with Berrichon twin lambs from DW Parsons, Ackenthwaite sold to £330 with aged Mules ewes with twins sell to £328 from R Lawrence, Cartmel who sold other pens to £315. Broken mouthed Cheviot ewes with twin lambs sold to £308 from JW & E Woof & Son, Sedbergh. Single outfits keenly bid for, with Texel ewes with Badger Face Texel lambs from JC & E Pedley & Son, Kirkby Stephen selling to £252 with other pens from the same home selling to £242. Broken mouth Cheviot ewes with Beltex x lambs from JW & E Woof & Son, Sedbergh sold to £222. Vendors are urged to enter ewes and lambs for upcoming sales here at J36 with confidence.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Fortnightly Sale of Store Hoggs, Thursday 14th March 2024.

Store Hoggs

The closing sale of store hoggs sold to expectational trade throughout, topping at £160 for a pen of 10 Texels from B&R Barnes, Carnforth, with another pen of 10 texels at £159 from B Clark, Grange over Sands. Also at £159 was the top price Mules from JT Tamlin, Arkholme. Top price Suffolks today was a pen of 7 from GM Redmayne, Kendal at £158 with numerous pens of medium to short keep store hoggs breaking the £140 barrier. A predominately smaller and longer keep show of hill bred lambs were forward, these topped at £100 for 18 Swaledales from GE&MG Dixon, Ambleside. Overall sale average of £107.57 was achieved, for a show of hoggs to include many vendors last draw of the season.

Another fabulous day’s trading at NWA Lancaster this Friday, with all classes of stock continuing to sell to the high rates which have come to be expected.

Calves & Weanlings

A super show of calves saw the strongest bulls sell to £645 for a British Blue cross from P&ME Higginson, Pilling with others at £590 from AW&AM Park, Ellel and WJ&E Woodhouse, Nateby. An eight week old Charolais sold at £540 from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall, Herefords to £510 from TE&M Kidd, Ellel and Aberdeen Angus cross to £540 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham. Stronger beef bull calves were regularly £400 to £460, nice rearers £320 to £380 with the very young and smaller end £220 to £270.

Heifer calves sold to £565 for weaned Aberdeen Angus cross from WJ&E Woodhouse, Nateby with British Blue cross to £535 from P&ME Higginson, Pilling, Charolais cross to £515 from J&G Thornley, Kirkham and Hereford to £500 from T&ME Kidd, Ellel. The strongest rearing heifers sold to £450 for a seven week old Hereford from JH Towers & Sons, Tunstall. Other stronger end were £300 to £350, medium sorts £250 to £300, with the smaller younger end £180 to £240.

Dairy steers sold to £380 for a Holstein Friesian from Wannops Farms Ltd, Heaton with others regularly £300 to £350.

100 plus calves are required every week to fulfil strong buyer demand.

Store Cattle

Store cattle sold to a top of £1980 for a ring full of Aberdeen Angus cross steers from TC Whiteside & Son, Pilling. Limousin cross sold to £1820 from AG Stafford, Out Rawcliffe, Charolais cross to £1720 from AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton who also sold British Blue at £1550. Dairy bred steers sold to £1520 for Holstein Friesians from R&E Ladds, Kendal. Younger steers for turnout were generally selling at £1300 to £1450. All steers forward averaged £1383.

Heifers sold to £1740 for Aberdeen Angus cross from TJ Robinson, Milnthorpe with British Blue cross achieving £1650 from AJ&D Knowles, New Hutton, Simmentals to £1590 from SH&LE Birkett, Nether Kellet and Charolais

OTM Cattle

Cull cows sold to a top price of 244p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from AT Burrow & Son, Gressingham with other young well fleshed cows regularly 215p/kg to 230p/kg. Beef cows sold to 219.5p/kg for a Hereford cross from JC Prickett, Bentham. Other heavy well fleshed cows were regularly 180p/kg to 200p/kg, mediums 165p/kg to 180p/kg with the leaner and lighter weights 140p/kg to 155p/kg. Top grossing being an Aberdeen Angus cross from CM&CA Jackson, Caton achieving £1906. Dairy cows sold to £1876 for a Fleckvieh from B&AC Barnes, Kirkby Lonsdale. All cull cows forward averaged 170p/kg or £1128 a head.

An entry of entirely dairy bred OTM heifers sold to 244.5p/kg and £1273 for a Holstein Friesian from J Bargh & Son, Morecambe. All OTM heifers forward averaged 205p/kg and £1152 a head.

OTM beef bred steers sold to 271.5p/kg for a Stabiliser from RW&FJ Rhodes & Son, Quernmore with others regularly 235p/kg to 260p/kg. Top grossing being a Stabiliser from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton totalling £1958. All OTM steers forward averaged 229p/kg and £1369.

An Aberdeen Angus cull bull from RG&B Lewis, Kirkby Lonsdale sold at 189.5p/kg and £1898.
