Lancaster Auction Mart: Weekly Sale of Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs, Cast Sheep & Sheep with Lambs at Foot. Monday 8th April 2024.

Spring Lambs

Small show of Spring Lambs forward today, peaking at £193 and 480p/kg from S Wilson & Son, Scotforth with other at £192, £185 and £180 from the same home. More spring lambs needed at Lancaster on a Monday to satisfy our ringside of buyers.

Prime Hoggs

A nice show of 350 hoggs saw heavy and well meated hoggs meeting plenty of demand and selling to an SQQ averaged of 388p/kg. The sale topped at £208 four time for pens of Texels from F&SG Sanderson & Son, Woodplumpton and M&YS Barker, Halton. Pens of Suffolks sold to £206 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham with an additional twenty pens over £200. Beltex cross hoggs sold to 450p/kg from AG Butler, Hambleton with the best regularly 430p/kg to 445p/kg. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots sell to £187 from Kelsall & Wood, Scotforth with others pens to £184 from J&H Davis, Garstang. Pens of Mules sold to £180 from M&YS Barker, Halton who sold other pens to £176. Horned hoggs saw Dalebreds to £160 from T&D Wright, Wray with Swaledale to £120 for 37Kg hoggs from KM&KJ Curwen, Abbeystead. More hoggs could have easily been sold to the vendors advantage, withs an active ring side of eight buyers.

All ewes forward averaged £118, with Texel ewes to £182 from JC Richardson, Slyne with Suffolks to £175 from WN&D Smith & Sons, Cockerham. First cross Texels sold to £174 from TR Gorst, Bay Horse. Pens of Mules saw the best sell to £138 from T&EA Garth, Bleasdale who sold others to £136. Horned ewes saw Dalebreds sell to £114 twice from S&J France, Over Wyresdale.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

120 lives forward in the ewe and lamb section, with the busiest ring side of buyers seen for some time. Aged Texel ewes with Beltex twin lambs sold to £315 on three occasions from TR Gorst, Bay Horse. A run of aged Mule ewes with Texel twins from Myerscough College sold to £252. Single outfits were once again keenly bid for with Blue Texel ewes with Badger Face lambs selling to £225 twice from JR Gorst, Dolphinholme, with Texels with Beltex lambs to the same price from TR Gorst, Bay Horse.

J36 Rural Auction Centre: Sale of Pigs. Weekly Sale of Sheep with Lambs at Foot, Spring Lambs, Prime Hoggs and Cast Sheep, Tuesday 9th April 2024.

Pigs

The popular sale of pigs saw the best prime gilts sell to £198 for Large White cross Pie Trains from J Stott Jnr, Crosscrake with others at £178 from D Lord, Preesall and lighter weights to £155 from W Stamper, Chipping. A top of 187p/kg was achieved for Large White cross gilts from D Lord, Preesall. Other well finished gilts and hoggs were keenly competed for, generally 150p/kg to 170p/kg. Several pens of stores and weaners saw store gilts to £72 and store boars £48 with white weaners £44.

Spring Lambs

An entry of Suffolk spring lambs from T&E Redmayne, Souththwaite saw keen buyer interest selling to a top of £185 and 431p/kg, with an overall averaged 422p/kg achieved for all spring lambs forward today. More lambs are required now on a weekly basis, to satisfy buyer demand.

Prime Hoggs

A nice entry of prime hoggs saw a continued high level of demand, with an overall market average of 368p/kg achieved. Well finished hoggs sold to £250 on three occasions for Beltex cross from W Gardner, Penrith and A Fare, Preston with others regularly £220 to £240. Other well finished first cross lambs were £180 to £205, with lighter weights £130 to £145, depending on breed and finish. A top of 480p/kg was achieved for Texel cross hoggs from W Gardner, Penrith with other well finished inside hoggs 405p/kg to 430p/kg. Others were 370p/kg to 390p/kg. Leaner hoggs were 330p/kg to 350p/kg, with several lots still going for finishing.

Cast Sheep

Cull ewes averaged £115, selling to a top of £248 for a Texel from A Fare, Preston with other heavy pure breds £200 to £225. The best first cross were generally £170 to £190. Mules selling to £170 with other heavy Mules regularly £145 to £160. Medium ewes of all breed were in keen demand, selling regularly at £120 to £140, with smaller lighter weights £90 to £105. Pure hill ewes sold to £128 for Cheviots, £124 Swaledales, £120 Scotch Black Face and £106 Herdwicks. Medium pure hill ewes were generally £90 to £110, with smaller lighter weights £65 to £80 and only the smallest and leanest less.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The weekly sale of sheep with lambs at foot saw a well travel ring side of buyers, keen to secure additional replacement stock. A consignment of Beltex ewes with Beltex lambs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston sold to £420 with twins, with others at £360 and singles selling to £310. Other Beltex ewes with twins sold to £345 from CM Jennings, Selside. A consignment of Zwartble shearlings with Dutch Spotted lambs from R&E Ladds, Kendal sold to £328 with twins.

Stronger continental ewes with twins sold to £315 and £310 from AT Bainbridge, Kirkby Stephen with other twins regularly £270 to £300 and singles £190 to £210. Aged Mule ewes with twins sold to £275 from R Lawrence, Grange over Sands, with others at £270 from T Pye, Leece and others regularly £240 to £260 with singles £170 to £190.

Several hill bred ewes are now starting to come forward, with Cheviot ewes with twin Texel cross lambs to £212 and £210 from M&C Booth, Kentmere.

The best singles sold to £182 again for Cheviots with Continental lambs from S Thompson, Grange Over Sands. Buyers are now ring side looking for younger sheep, with the sale next week including the annual prize show and slae of sheep with lambs at foot.

North West Auctions once again experienced an exceptional trade across all three sale rings at its popular weekly sale. OTM’s sold to 229.5p/kg and £2104, store steers to £1840, store heifers to £1750, rearing calves to £550 and weaned calves to £925.

Calves & Weanlings

85 calves were forward today which sold to an exceptionally strong trade. The best rearing bull calves sold to £550 for Charolais cross from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall with British Blue cross to £525 from AD&R Milner, Cloughton on Brock and G&ME Woodhouse & Sons, Ellel. Aberdeen Angus cross achieved £465 from Tom Barron Farms, Woodplumpton. Medium rearing bulls were regularly £320 to £380, with the younger end £270 to £310. Dairy bulls sold to a top price of £160 for a Holstein Friesian with Ayrshire’s to £135.

Heifer calves sold to £490 for British Blue cross from G&ME Woodhouse, Ellel with other stronger end rearing heifers £370 to £450. The best younger rearers sold to £375 for Charolais cross from JH Towers & Son, Tunstall who sold Limousin cross to £370 and British Blue cross to £310 from Barbour Farms, Claughton on Brock. Younger heifers were generally £200 to £240.

An entry of weaned calves from Throstle Nest Farms, Pilling saw British Blue cross steers to £925 with others at £910 and heifers from the same home to £765. Hereford heifers from E Lund & Son, Ingleton sold to £680.

Store Cattle

All steers today averaged £1442, with a top price of £1840 achieved for a ring full of British Blues from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel who sold other pens at £1830 and £1800. Charolais cross also achieved £1800 from A&E Clarkson, Thurnham with J Oddie & Son, Blackburn to the same price for a trio of Aberdeen Angus cross. Other stronger end steers were regularly £1550 to £1700, with younger steers £1250 to £1400.

Heifers sold to an overall market averaged of £1247 selling to a top of £1750 for British Blue cross again from K&DE Woodhouse, Ellel. Aberdeen Angus cross achieved £1670 from MJ Shepherd, New Biggin and Hereford

cross £1580 from J Tattersall, Leyland and Limousin cross also £1580 from P Whitton & Son, Burneside. Other stronger heifers were £1400 to £1550, with younger longer keep cattle £1100 to £1250.

OTM Cattle

NWA Lancaster saw 101 cull cows forward which sold to a market average of 174p/kg. Beef cows sold to 214p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus cross from AK&PA Threlfall, Inskip and £1470 for a Limousin from Lakeland Farm, Ings. Dairy cows sold to 249.5p/kg for a Montbeliarde from MD Close & Son, Arkholme who sold others at £1711. Beef cows for further finishing were regularly 190p/kg to 205p/kg, with heavy well fleshed dairy cows 180p/kg to 195p/kg, parlour types 165p/kg to 178p/kg and the leanest 120p/kg to 140p/kg.

Over aged beef heifers sold to 269.5p/kg and £1482 for an Aberdeen Angus cross from WJ&LA Barker, Arkholme. Dairy heifers sold to 244.5p/kg for a Fleckvieh from CG Birkett, Carnforth and £1809 for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel. Other stronger dairy heifers were generally 220p/kg to 240p/kg, grossing £1400 to £1500.

A single OTM steer sold to 229.5p/kg and £2104 for a Simmental cross from J Bargh, Morecambe. Cull bulls sold to 179.5p/kg and £1184.
