Prime Hoggs

A fast trade was seen for all classes and types of hoggs with an SQQ of 383p/kg. Best bred hoggs sold to £260 for Texel cross from J France, Pilling with others at £252 from AG Butler, Hambleton, and £242 from A Thompson, Carnforth. Other well bred and finished hoggs were regularly £200 to £220. A top price of 543p/kg was achieved for Beltex hoggs from GM&A Jackson, Little Eccleston with other pure and three quarter bred hoggs 450p/kg to 480p/kg. Hill bred hoggs saw Cheviots to £217 and 407p/kg, Mule to £188 and 395p/kg, Scotch Black Face to £184 and 409p/kg, Swaledales to £172 and 392p/kg, Dalesbred to £163 and 370p/kg. Well finished hoggs of all breeds and weights continue to sell to a premium, with the leaner end selling for finishing.

Cast Sheep

An exceptional cull ewe trade saw an overall market averaged £131 a head, with over half the entry being pure hill ewes. The sale peaked at £300 for a pure Texel ewe from Drinkall Bros, Abbeystead with other heavy ewes regularly £230 to £270. First cross ewes sold to £212 from E Dodgson, Kendal and WS Burrow, Carnforth. Other heavy first cross ewes were regularly £170 to £200. Mules sold to £170 from JW&TE Sharp, Lyth with other at £168 from M&S Leech, Flookburgh and E Lund & Son, Ingleton. Other pens of heavy Mules were regularly £145 to £160, mediums £120 to £140 with the smaller meated ewe £100 to £115. Pure hill ewes sold to £172 for Cheviots, £128 for Swaledales, Herdwick £125 and Rough Fells £122. Medium meated hill ewe were regularly £70 to £90, with only the smallest and leanest less (generally £50 to £70).

Cull rams sold to a top of £205 for a Texel with other better end continentals £160 to £200. Hill rams sold to £138 for Swaledales, with others at £125.

Sheep with Lambs at Foot

The weekly sale of sheep with lambs at foot saw an ever increasing number of ewes with lambs forward selling to a competitive ring side of buyers. The sale peaked at £330 for Texel two crop ewes with single lamb from IT Wilson, Millom who sold others at £322, with others from M Moorhouse, Field Broughton selling at £320. Other stronger twin outfits were regularly £280 to £310. Aged Mule ewes with twin Texel cross lambs from H Cook, Witherslack sold at £295 with others at £270 from M Allen, Carnforth. Suffolk cross ewes with single lambs from S Wilman, Casterton sold to £250, with other at £230. Other ewes with younger lambs were generally £70 to £80 a life, with buyers showing a keen interest in younger sheep as future stock replacement.

An ever-increasing entry of calves and ringside of buyers saw all classes and types keenly competed for, selling to a top of £495 for 6 week old Charolais x bull calf from Bambers Farm, Cockerham with the best 6-8 week old bull calves £380-£440. Month old calves selling to £380 for a British Blue x from JR Tiplady, Ainstable with younger British Blue selling to £400 for 3 weeks old from Dolphenby Farming Ltd, Penrith. Stronger native bull calves regularly £300-£350 with younger rearers £220-£280. Heifer calves sold to a top price of £490 for a Charolais x from Bambers Farms, Cockerham with other stronger heifers £350-£410 with nice medium rearers £280£320 with younger month old sorts £180-£240. Weaned bulls sold to £670 for a 4 month old British Blue from W Stamper, Chipping with Fleckvieh bulls selling to £400 from N Howard, Gainford. Store Cattle

A catalogue entry of 300 store cattle were put forward to a busy ringside of buyers which included new purchasers ensuring all stock were sold to a sharp trade. South Devon bulls topped the job at £1780 (14 month old) from AT Threlkeld, Satterthwaite. A run of 10 month old Limousin bulls from AJ & L Birkett, Little Langdale sold to £1380 with others from the same home selling to £1250. Heifers sold to £1540 for a pair of Hereford from I & AJ Armer, Burneside who sold other strong pens to £1500. Grazing heifers sold to £1500 from Moorhouse Farms Ltd, IOM. With native heifers selling to £1270 for a pen of 5 Aberdeen Angus from TW Wilson, Flookburgh. Smarter bred yearling heifers regularly £1080-£1150 with grazing types £880-£950. Bullocks sold to a top of £1500 for Charolais from Moorhouse Farms Ltd, IOM with other pens selling to £1480. Yearling bullocks were in keen demand with Limousin selling to £1350 from MW & MR Black, Staveley. With others to £1300 from CI Briggs, High Wray with grazing bullocks regularly £1000-£1100. Beef cull cows sold to 224.5p/kg for a Hereford x from G & ID Postlethwaite, Riddings with other feeding type beef cows regularly 190-205p/kg. Top grossing being a Hereford from G & ID Postlethwaite, Riddings achieving £1519. Dairy cows sold to 227.5p/kg for a young Holstein Friesian from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack. With a larger entry being parlour type dairy cows generally 160-180p/kg depending on quality and type. Top grossing dairy cow today was from Strickland Hill Farming, Witherslack achieving £1531. All cull cows forward averaged 171p/kg. OTM heifers sold to 239.5p/kg for Charolais x from L Staley, Kirkby Stephen and Holstein Friesian from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby. Other well fleshed dairy heifers sold 210-225p/kg. Top grossing being a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Sowerby, Appleby at £1537. OTM steers sold to 189.5p/kg and £894 for Highlands from Moorhouse Farms Ltd, IOM.

Plenty of fire in the calf ring, with a fast trade from start to finish. Best rearing bulls sold to £530 for an eight week old British Blue cross from JP&C Robson, Garstang with others at £420 to £480. Younger native bulls sold to £350 for Aberdeen Angus cross from CR&A Baxter & Son, Morecambe and three week old Hereford cross at £300 from MJ&H Atkinson, Quernmore. Dairy bulls sold to £230 for weaned Black and Whites from JT&B Fox, Quernmore with rearers to £170 and £150 from Wallbank Farms, Abbeystead.

Heifer calves sold to £435 again for a British Blue cross from JP&C Robson, Garstang with others £375 to £410. Weaned calves sold to £640 for a four month old British Blue cross bull from JM&MH France & Son, Littledale with others at £580. Weaned British Blue cross heifers from Throstle Nest Farms, Pilling sold to £495 with Aberdeen Angus cross heifers to £415 from AW&AM Park & Son, Ellel.

Several stirks forward sold to £870 for eight month old Aberdeen Angus steers from CD&HL Mason, Hornby and £780 for six month old Hereford cross steers from E Lund & Sons, Ingleton.

Herefords achieved £1700 from J Tattersall, Leyland. Other well grown short keep steers were regularly £1460 to £1580, with feeding types £1280 to £1400. Top price dairy steers were Black and Whites from GR Park, Whinfell with British Friesian from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe achieving £1360. Heifers sold to £1800 from A&T Smith, Longridge with Aberdeen Angus to £1710 from KH&D Holden, Pilling. British Blue cross sold to £1680 from M Shepherd, Pilling. A rise in number with 120 forward, selling to an overall market average of 176p/kg with over two thirds parlour types. Best beef cows sold to 224p/kg for a Limousin cross from JG&PH Thompson & Son, Selside with other feeding type beef cows generally 190p/kg to 205p/kg. Top grossing being a Limousin from WS Burrow, Silverdale achieving £1605, with other stronger end beef cows £1300 to £1450. Heavy well fleshed dairy cows sold to 204p/kg for a black and white from T Taylor, Woodplumpton with a run of cross breds from EW&R Towers, Hornby selling to 199p/kg. British Friesian sold to 197p/kg from EE Thornton & Sons, Morecambe. Other well fleshed dairy cows were 180p/kg to 192p/kg, parlour types 168p/kg to 180p/kg with only the leanest and lightest less. Top grossing dairy cow was from T Taylor, Woodplumpton who sold a black and white at £1719 and others at £1718. Other heavy dairy cows were regularly £1450 to £1500, with all sold averaged £1145.

OTM beef heifer sold to 259p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus from GR&A Foy, Conder Green and Pilling Hall, Pilling

who both sold others to £1634 and £1627. Dairy heifers sold to 251p/kg for a Montbeliarde from A&FM Bolland & Sons, Ellel.
