THE DAWN OF RADIANCE: A Journey into the Unseen

Inspired by the fleeting moment of the golden hour in the crown of the Swiss Alps, in 2021, La Prairie sought to recreate its unique radiance and impart it to the skin with the unveiling of the Pure Gold collection. In 2022, La Prairie explores another radiant Swiss landscape. Suspended between the majestic minerality and the vast lakes of Switzerland, there exists a singular place overlooking lac Léman where radiance reaches an apex of beauty. It is a place shaped by ancient terraced vineyards traced by stone walls. Throughout the day, the bright sun directly irradiates the mountain face while its rays are reflected off the mirror-like surface of the lake to ignite the Swiss mineral surfaces. The energy of the sun is captured and stored in these ancient stones. When the sun sets, Swiss peaks are veiled in darkness and a calmness blankets the landscape. The replenishing energy of the sun that was captured during the day continues to seep through the mineral core in a nocturnal diffusion, allowing the vines to thrive at night. Inspired by this nightly phenomenon, the scientists at La Prairie sought to capture its essence.

Gary Player and Tom Watson joined the game’s greatest golfer, Jack Nicklaus to kick off the 2022 Masters with a ceremonial drive. Nicklaus, an American sports treasure, was featured a couple months back on the cover of Metropolitan Palm Beach thanks to our special features editor Margaret Bastick Luce. Margaret has become a vital and magical member of our magazine family. Margaret knows everybody, including famous athletes like Jack Nicklaus, Joe Namath and most recently, America’s #1 polo player, Nic Roldan. Each issue I want to bring to you experiences both bold and benign, luxe and leisure, for long-time residents and transplants alike. South Florida has much to offer, and I want to be your personal guide. Follow me as we begin this journey together because if you haven’t, you should... Step back and enjoy the roses that the April showers provide. This Mother’s Day I am pondering the wonder of women and the strength we have and the ability to share this strength through a pandemic and an array of other global challenges. War in Ukraine. Suffering here and abroad. It’s hard to imagine as I sit in a lovely cafe, rewriting a cover story ( that was going to be something else), the current state of affairs. The world is in chaos yet we all must go on. How very blessed we Americans are. I can’t imagine the loss of life and the mourning of Ukrainian mothers over children and parents. I am so very grateful to be safe, to be loved and to have my loved ones with me, like my Claire. My thoughts go out to all the strong women across the globe. Here goes to all the Mothers, daughters, and friends; the strength we must garner, and the strength we must show when challenged. So, send a note, a text, or an email to the incredible women in your life that inspire courage. I started my business back in December of 2021, as I felt I was truly being called to pursue my creative passions through bringing other’s fairytale visions to life. My husband gifted me the LLC paperwork for my birthday, & Ever Ash Weddings was born! I left my career in Advertising in which I was able to work on National brands in the Cosmetics,

About Ever Ash:

Ever Ash Weddings focused on three design pillars: Thoughtful, Romantic, & Organic design. By staying true to these three pillars, I ensure that the clients I take on and ultimately the work I produce falls within the Ever Ash brand style. Having no two events be the same is so important to me, so rest assured this is not meant to dictate design or client choices by any means but rather to serve as a guide, and overall design starting point to ensure I take on the clients that have a similar taste when it comes to design. I pride myself on being organized, empathetic, communicative, as well as by pushing boundaries and thinking outside the box.

About the shoot: Our Crane Club Styled shoot was inspired by both the idea of bringing European romance to sunny South FL, as well as this vision of romantic florals with the delicate sound of a harp playing in the background. The vision came about by Ellie, of Ellie’s Garden Design Studio, and from there we brainstormed ways to make that vision a reality starting with a tour of the Crane Club at Tesoro located in Port Saint Lucie, FL. The second you arrive at the venue,

it begs to be noticed. It is grand, polished, and stands proud. Within the spacious venue, each room and floor has a personality of it’s own making for a very versatile venue sure to fit the needs/style of any bride. We were inspired by the terraces and stone fireplaces located both inside and out. From there, we began to reach out to other local vendors in the area to determine who else was willing and able to help bring this vision to life. We received two gorgeous bridal gowns from Bacio Bacio bridal salon in Wellington, FL. Table top rentals were graciously provided by Jade Smith of Unearthed Rentals, and we were able to bring on a very talented harpist, Karina Kusz, to play in the background for some photo opps as well as video footage. Kalev Kangrol and his fiancé Laura Lora offered to model for us, and on the day of they were elegantly done-up by hair and makeup artist Trish Vanzee. All of the content that was captured was beautifully done by Martin & Gloria Photos, husband and wife photography duo. Planning, design, & day-of coordination was done by myself, Ashley of Ever Ash Weddings. :) The end result showing bride’s of South FL that it is possible to have a European-eque, romantic wedding between the swaying palms. Beach weddings aren’t their ONLY option. Spring 2022

HISTORY MEETS MODERN LUXURY AT

C

orinthia London, located just steps from Trafalgar Square, Westminster, the River Thames, and Covent Garden, combines grandeur and heritage with exquisite, intelligent design. The hotel is a destination in and of itself, with 283 rooms, 51 suites, seven penthouses, three world-class restaurants, and a truly unrivaled spa. Corinthia London has a fascinating historical pedigree. The establishment first opened in the late 1800s, with a brochure touting its virtues that would not be lost on the modern visitor. That the hotel's location is especially recommended to ladies and families visiting the West End during the Season; to travelers from Paris and the Continent arriving at the Charing Cross Terminus from Dover and Folkestone; to Officers and others attending the levees

The hotel's location caused it to be requisitioned by the government during the First and Second World Wars in order to provide extra space for conflict administration. Room 474 served as the first headquarters for SOE, which is now part of the British Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6 (of James Bond fame). After being sold in the mid-2000s, an extensive refurbishment brought the building's history full circle, returning it to its roots as a luxury destination in the heart of London. The hotel now has a number of rooms, suites, and penthouses, all of which feature Hypnos beds, Nespresso machines, and Samsung televisions.


Corinthia London debuted eleven new ‘Garden’ and ‘London’ suites in 2018, providing guests with a broader selection of luxurious suites to choose from. The London Suite is inspired by a day in the capital; the light, airy interior pays homage to modern living, with modern amenities and cutting-edge technology. The 105m² dual aspect suite features featured artwork and sculptures from the Cubism era. The space was designed with privacy in mind, and for guests who want to entertain, there are doorways to each functional space as well as the option of two additional adjoining bedrooms. The Garden Suite, which overlooks a beautifully landscaped courtyard, is designed with a nod to the quintessential British garden. A tranquil atmosphere is created by the use of verdant green accents in soft furnishings and live planting. The botanical color scheme and texture pervade the 67m² suite, encouraging guests to unwind as the doors open directly into a living area with a feature fireplace and the main seating area that wraps around it.

The extensive multi-floor spa - ESPA Life - is one of the true highlights of Corinthia London. Wake up tired limbs with an ESPA warming and lifting treatment to relax and rejuvenate the body and mind. The treatment starts with a relaxing back massage that uses hot stones to warm and comfort the body. This helps to relieve muscle tension and soothe aching muscles, especially during the colder months when the body holds tension in this area of the body. here are those rare occasions where you meet someone whose interior is even brighter, warmer and enlivening than their exterior. Over 20 years ago, enter Margaret Bastick Luce. She rolled up in her Escalade at Jupiter Beach with her Australian LifeGuard Hat, shorts and tee ready to put some miles in. Considering this was my first encounter, I just couldn’t resist asking her to flip her fabulous hair as she did in the Breck and Pantene commercials. Appeasing our Triathlon Club crew with a commanding look that said “are you kidding, are we here to run or what, let’s get going?'' Perhaps, it was this early encounter and a few decades of friendship that had her ask me to write this bio. And, I am glad she did! Yes, the cover shows Margaret Luce like a finial d’arbre adorning the top of the Plaza Christmas Tree, however, when you take a beach walk, go for a run or play a round of golf with her, you might be surprised to discover her blend of Joan Rivers and Whitney Cummings humor, sharp wit, wisdom and deep commitment to mental health.

Transport Margaret from the covers of many recognized magazines from around the world, and you will enjoy a goofy, playful and compassionate lady. Whether she is hiking the Malibu hills, skiing Bachelor Gulch, or riding her bike along the Atlantic, you can’t help being curious about her. If you pause and listen, what you may hear are fascinating tales of adventure near and far, unabashed commentary on an array of subjects while getting a glimpse into her God given talent to put a smile on your face. The many countries and cultures traveled to and lived in, has her letting loose of the occasional Italian or Spanish acquired from moments in time. A bit self-deprecating when measured by absurd societal standards, she wisely allowed her curiosity and wonder to guide her in playing hooky from high school and hopping onto the Metro North Train from Westport, CT to New York City in search of real acting classes at HB Studios. Little did she know that would start the wild ride of life. You may have heard about the women “discovered” by the likes of The Ford Agency, well, Margaret is one of them and it changed the trajectory of her life. The funny thing is, she would rather show you a picture of her children doing what Spring 2022

they love, a poem by her brother, a David Hicks fabric or a magazine that had her dad on the cover in acknowledgement of his running prowess rather than put a spotlight on herself. The mom of two, business owner, Features Editor of Metropolitan Magazine Palm Beach, actress, model, wife and daughter were built on a lust for life and experiences. Transporting from Manhattan to Jupiter, Florida a few decades ago started a new season. Plenty of wonderful adventures, people and places along with deep sorrow. The loss of her brother left an indelible mark, he could make anyone laugh to the point of tears, a prolific writer that was sadly, rarely read and like his sister, he was incredibly creative. His years of challenge honed and deepened Margaret’s commitment to helping those struggling with addiction and mental health. Steadfast in her faith, committed to her craft, an ardent protector of her friends and defender of those unjustly treated are at her core. You might say her secret sauce is a culmination of her Irish and athletic roots, love of horses, fashion, humor, sport and a deep desire to bring light to the world. Whether lending a hand at the Fern House, Residential Rehabilitation for Men in West Palm Beach where she connects one on one with those individuals who may not have had the best of circumstances but are reaching for a better life or talking with those who ACE New York serves, Margaret consistently strives to create a positive ripple effect. Generous in all areas of life, genuinely sharing the benefits of physical activity, having faith, speaking truth, not being afraid to boldly be authentic and bringing awareness through her natural brand representation of people, products, and style. A few fun facts about Margaret are that she once showed up for a triathlon in a Frette Robe and has often been spotted with La Prairie sunscreen spread ear to ear, wearing the most massive brim hat you have ever seen, high school Nike running shorts and a tee. Expect the unexpected, embrace fun, forget comparing yourself and smile, you will be surprised at how it creates joy in you and others. These are a few things learned from Margaret. A life lived fully has her not taking herself too seriously and helping others lighten-up. She may distract you with her self-effacing humor, all the while sizing up the situation and deciding to bounce. Keep in mind, this woman of action is generous and caring. Giving time and treasure to the causes and most importantly, the faces and hearts of those that the causes represent. Always wanting to leave people more joyful and better. Well Margaret, you are probably conjuring up ways to get back at me for this biography, bring it on my Irish sister. Remember, you taught me how to do one of your legendary Irish exits!

y the time you read this Andrew Molen, the handsome chef with sparkling blue eyes will be settling into his 4th restaurant that he conceptualized from menu to décor in the last twelve months. This one will be in Shelter Island. The gorgeous island that is between Sag Harbor and Greenport LI. Reachable only by ferry. It is full of charming homes and farms. With a great golf course. Andrew’s story in the kitchen begins with his mother, Sandra Arcara. Sandra owned a trendy Mexican Californian restaurant on the Upper East Side where for many years Andrew learned his basics including washing dishes at the age of fourteen. Sandra is passionate about their storied family history which begins in Napa, California in 1821 when the King of Spain granted the family 43 thousand acres (about twice the area of Manhattan) for bravery during the many wars fought by their illustrious ancestor for the Spanish crown. The mother and son duo are so close, they are even writing a cookbook together covering 150 years of family recipes and history. While Andrew did not attend Culinary School, he does name several top chefs

SERVING UP A 21ST-CENTURY FAIRY-TALE FEAST: BARCELONA’S DISFRUTAR

A

team of sixty dedicated to preparing tasting menus for forty to forty-five diners: “it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” a winemaker in Conca de Barbera, a denomination an hour or so away from Barcelona by car, tells me when I mention that I’m going to dine at Disfrutar. This winemaker adds that she and her friends go to Compartir, Disfrutar’s sister restaurant, every summer. (Compartir is located north of Barcelona in the beach town of Cadaques on the Costa Brava.) The Barcelona restaurant, Disfrutar is the number 5 restaurant in the world this year according to World’s 50 Best, and I avoid eating more than breakfast the day I am to go there so that I will be able to fully enjoy the Meal. I speak with Oriol Castro and Eduard Xatruch, two of the three El Bullitrained chefs who own Disfrutar and Compartir (which mean “to enjoy” and “to share,” respectively), before dining at the restaurant that has a colorful, but somewhat inconspicuous exterior. (The third owner, Mateu Casanas, is away at the time of my visit.) “We wanted to start with modern cuisine,” Castro explains, when Disfrutar opened in 2014 in Barcelona’s midtown – a grid of streets designed in the 1850s when the city was growing rapidly – and called the Eixample. Even though they had worked under world-renowned chef, Ferran Adria, at El Bulli, a mecca of creative cuisine and molecular gastronomy, for eighteen years together, their initial ambitions for this new restaurant in Barcelona were more modest. (El Bulli, which closed in 2011, and was located north of Barcelona on the Costa Brava, was named the best restaurant in the world five times by World’s 50 Best; reservations sold out each year within one day for the six-month

season.) However, as Disfrutar gained recognition within Barcelona’s restaurant scene, the chefs began innovating more and more and also hired a larger team. New techniques were developed by the chefs and the expanded team. For instance, there’s now a table downstairs that two to four people can reserve and where VIPs such as the NBA’s Pau Gasol have dined, which is unlike any other table in the world. This unique setting, where the table changes over the course of the meal and where different textures and sensations are a key element of the experience, has been the site of marriage proposals and other important moments that diners remember forever. “Change is very important,” Castro maintains, and emphasizes how the team continues to experiment – and even did so during the Covid lockdowns that happened twice in Spain. (Disfrutar and Compartir’s staff were all retained during the pandemic.) Xatruch shows me a catalog of photos and recipes that they have kept each year since Disfrutar opened. “We share freely” with others in the industry, he says, “because everyone copies nowadays with Instagram and [similar] tools.” Creativity, he explains, “is all around you…you see products in the market, for example, and get ideas.” Disfrutar is located across from the Mercat del Ninot, its stalls filled with fresh produce such as rossinyols, a type of mushroom that is found in the Pyrenees and can only be foraged by hand. (The chefs use this mushroom to add sweet notes to some dishes when it is in season.) “Will someone who likes traditional Catalan cuisine enjoy the food at


Disfrutar?” I ask Castro and Xatruch. “Whether the food is creative or traditional,” Oriol Castro tells me, “it is either good or bad.” Just as artists need to know the rules for drawing, these top chefs have to understand how to cook traditional dishes. “We’re big fans of traditional dishes,” Castro continues; in order to reach new innovative heights, they must develop new forms of such dishes. One exceptional course, for example, that was part of the tasting menu I tried, was a gazpacho sandwich. It was delicious and looked like a grilled cheese, but the taste was all frozen gazpacho. Other dishes that were surprising and equally tasty included Disfrutar’s Gilda, a type of pintxo, or tapa, from the Basque country that includes olives, anchovies, and peppers, and was deconstructed here. (The “Gilda” originally got its name from a movie in which Rita Hayworth was the star.) We tasted dealcoholized wine and ate a beautiful “crunchy mushroom leaf” as well an elaborate and gorgeous dish called “The Goose that Laid the Golden Eggs.” This dish is a “new dish from 2021 and its origin comes from the lockdown when we started working on a themed development about spherification,” Xatruch explains. “After working with food-safe metals, we added the gold powder…[and] the exterior maintained the gold and the inside was still a deep red from the chili crab sauce…the idea originated in 2017 [when] one of our most famous techniques [was] frying the egg white and substituting the yolk for a [sphere].” All the dishes were lovely to look at, but the most important aspects, the chefs reiterated, are “taste” and “pleasure.” The only issue that a diner might have when savoring these dishes within the white, airy ambiance of the main room of the restaurant, is that there are perhaps too many. It is an “embarrassment of riches,” in a sense, and it’s important to come hungry and ready for a real fairytale-like feast that has a thoroughly 21stcentury feel. “Sense of humor,” “surprise,” and “emotions,” are some key elements of

Disfrutar’s concept and they shone through the night I dined there. I recommend that those who visit Barcelona make reservations at Disfrutar in order to truly enjoy these culinary artists’ concoctions. The chefs ground their dishes in the Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine and ascend to extraordinary heights; dining at Disfrutar is truly a journey for the senses. Spring 2022

ichael A. Moritz and his firm, Stonewater Architecture, have made a name for themselves in affluent communities in New York, New Jersey, and, most recently, Palm Beach, Florida. An incredibly accomplished architect featured on the cover of Design NJ and in Luxe Interiors + Design, Michael prides himself on doing things differently in the design world and thinking outside the box. He has exceptional creative design skill, and his projects boast showstopper quality. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Michael about his unique approach to meaningful design. Michael’s passion is working with clients with big ideas who are looking for a particular feeling in their new home. He takes the seed of a client’s dream and, with his expert perspective and interpretation, transcends that vision into a home beyond what they

could have imagined. “I always gravitate toward projects that have a really good backstory,” Michael told me. When he meets a new client, he gets to know their interests, personality, and what excites them. His unique approach to design relies heavily on building these relationships. “I like seeing how I’m going to connect with them, if there’s a good vibe, and if we’re going to be able to communicate and collaborate.” Michael’s approach also considers how the client is going to live in the house. We all utilize our space differently, and he strives to tailor his designs to make the most sense for his clients and their lifestyles. It’s about how they’re going to live their lives within what he builds for them. A recent client of his, Christine Hughes, shared, “He listened, he had a clear understanding of how we wanted to


utilize and live in our home, and he made it a reality.” His easy going and calming nature make him a delight to work with through the home design and building process, and one can expect true quality and skill in his designs. Michael’s passion for architecture started when he was a child. He had an intense interest when he looked at buildings, especially when traveling to historic places and experiencing different styles of architecture. He spent his days creating, building things with his grandfather, and drawing houses in his school notebooks. “It’s something that’s in me. I was seventeen years old and I knew I was going to be an architect,” he shared. I asked Michael where he finds personal inspiration. “I love being out and experiencing great architecture. When I see interesting projects, say, on Instagram, I try to go to those spots and find those homes to really see what other architects are doing and how they’re doing it.” He spoke of the distinctive experience of seeing a property in person that allows him to encounter the space as the architect intended that cannot be matched with photographs. In his designs, Michael told me, “I love all different styles of architecture. I like merging styles, like modern and traditional, together sometimes, while trying to stay true to what they are.” His work in the Palm Beach area is unique in that his designs tend to be more upbeat and modern, and often break away from the traditional Florida style. Michael will soon be expanding his design work to the Hamptons where the people are open to exploring new ideas and appreciate his modern creative design and style. When you choose Michael A. fter a successful Palm Beach International Boat Show, award-winning yacht broker Mark Elliott is on track for another record-breaking year. Elliott was named Broker of the year for the 12th time. While winning his latest accolades, Elliott also had four new listings last week, 2 of which were at PBIBS. Atomic, the 209 ft. Viareggio Super yacht 2020, was on display during the show at Rybovich. She boasts a stunning luxe exterior, extensive watersports equipment, and generous socializing spaces. She can host up to 12 guests in six luxuriously appointed staterooms. Laurel 240 ft Delta, Mosaique 163 ft Proteksan, and Milk and Honey 125’ Palmer Johnson are also impressive yachts. Along with his new listings, Mark also sold Bella Giornata 94’ Lazzara and Suzanne 94’ Lazzara in March. Elliott has been with IYC for 23 years and continues to apply his decades of experience to assist his clients in cruising the world one yacht at a time. Both a Captain and a pilot, in addition to a

top broker. Elliott says as a Captain he had the most fun job in the world. Being a Captain and helicopter pilot, he has flown into every volcano, every waterfall, and every island in the Caribbean. He’s been on top of glaciers and almost swallowed by the Med, which can be recalled anytime by tuning into Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street. The Captain of Jordan Belfort’s yacht, Nadine (as she was called in the blockbuster film), Elliott was lauded as a hero after displaying courage and leadership in their escape from the vessel as she was swallowed by the sea during a Mistral which was later referred to as “Mayday in the Med.” Milk and Honey, Mosaique, Laurel and Atomic are just the latest of Elliott’s listings, but the broker has an impressive background. In 2021, he sold 12 boats, 6 in December alone totaling over 1,500 feet of yachts sold.


Elliott resides in Wellington Aero Club, where he parks his seaplane, twin Cessna and helicopter, to better facilitate deals and get clients to and from the yachts wherever they are. Growing up in Phoenix, Arizona, Tony is inspired by the events of 9/11 to serve in the Marines. But when he tries, Tony discovers he is an undocumented immigrant, a Dreamer. With grit, determination, and help from his family and community, Tony discovers a new mission: one that can make history, inspire and create changes beyond becoming a Marine!

is a stand-out in every way, a wonderful triple threat, and what a journey we go on from the moment the curtain goes up. From Tony's relationships with his friends to his girlfriend, Ceci, and last but not least his parents and family. We get a full scope of his day-to-day life in a multicultural world full of trials and tribulations with a few high notes at that. Other stand-out moments are duets with his castmates Legna Cedillo who plays Ceci and his mother, Felicitas played by Johanna CarliseZepeda who reminds us of all of our Latino mothers.

With an American-Latin sounding score by the singersongwriter Carrie Rodriguez and choreography by Sergio Mejia, ¡Americano! challenges preconceived notions and reminds us that America’s strength has always been its melting pot and the enterprising immigrants who paved the way.

In Americano, you will find aspects of American Latin culture and references that we can all relate to. It is a refreshing take on Latin musical culture, not without its faults, though, I choose to focus on the message and the spirit of Americano, which is the melting pot of America and the limitless opportunities this musical makes us dream of. Kudos to the creative and administrative teams for making this happen, Bravi Tutti!

This musical is full of company ensembles where all of the characters come to life. I believe it is where Americano keeps shining through.

A leader in the international cultural sector for more than three decades, he built the Bushnell Center for the Arts in Hartford, CT into one of the top touring presenters in the United States, served as the CEO of The Stamford Center for the Arts, Chief Development, Marketing and Communications Office for the Perez Museum of Art in Miami and was the Founding President of Classical South Florida Radio. As a global traveler, he’s landed in more the 25 countries and while in China was the Chief Operating Officer of Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment and President of Broadway China Ventures, a division of the Nederlander Organization hopping between Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Macao. While he’s known locally here for raising hundreds of millions to support the cultural and educational agenda for not only his favorite organizations including the Cancer Alliance, but also many of his favorite clients. PALM BEACH PAST By Melissa Duge Spiers

e arrived in Palm Beach full of early-90s New York City elan: head-to-toe black, Marlboro Reds in hand. I was nearly finished getting my scuba-diving license, but check-out dives in the murky East River were not high on my bucket list, so when my roommate bestie Margot suggested we go to her grandmother Mimi’s house in Palm Beach I jumped at the chance for clear, warm water. A group of us had hung out for a weekend at Mimi’s shuttered estate in South Hampton the past spring – wearing the guest-house robes, smoking pipes we had found in a closet, and drinking bloody Marys while watching GREASE on VHS - so I figured I knew what to expect in Palm Beach. Immediately upon landing we entered a sea of Pulitzer prints and loud Polo shirts, and it became very clear that I had absolutely no idea what I had gotten into. “Off season” in the Hamptons and “in season” in Palm Beach were two very different things in this world where people named their houses, with a scheduled set of months in which they all inhabited

them at the same time. San Francisco, New York City, South Hampton, Palm Beach. Each had their three months, and the entire household of every member of that society moved. As an average-but-ambitious middle-class kid obsessed with Jackie O and Emily Post, I had dreamed all my early life of this: reading dusty etiquette books and believing that if I did everything absolutely correctly I could peak by marrying a house with a name. And here I was at a house with a name in bold, that had been in the family for generations. People served us, people drove us, people folded our clothes if we left the room. Barnard College feminism had thankfully given me other ambitions by that point, but it had also left me thumbing my nose at Emily’s antiquated-yet-obviously-still-applicable advice: “bring a bathing costume, a day costume, a night costume, in light colors.” Margot and I had arrived with only a shared suitcase of black, with more black…and some black.


Maguire crew in night clubs, at delis, in Central Park. Where were the hotties here? We finally figured the young people must be at private parties, hidden away behind the forbidding hedges like ours…only more hip? But a hip hedge is nearly impossible to identify, I can assure you. So we drove the empty, narrow streets, peering into cars that passed us, vowing to follow any cute young men we saw and invite ourselves over. But we found none. So we settled for lurking in a cabana at the Bath & Tennis club day in and day out, chain smoking and watching blonde women barely older than ourselves, tastefully clad in modest floral one-piece swimsuits, shepherding their toddlers into the baby pool. We compared ourselves to Marge Simpson’s acidic, childless, wise-cracking sisters. We scowled at the bright blue ocean, the blinding sandy beach, the potted explosions of multicolored botany through our dark, oversized shades. And when it was time to go home, I swiped the Bath & Tennis logo bathmat from our cabana as a memento. It made a great highlight in our apartment, and I figured Mimi and Mark Hampton might be proud of us. It didn’t technically embrace the color spectrum. But at least it was crisp, bright white.

Immediately after our first breakfast (egg, yoghurt, toast, coffee, WSJ folded to the left of place setting), Margot’s grandmother tactfully offered a shopping trip to Worth Avenue, instructing Margot to pick out appropriate clothing, her treat. Guiding us delicately past the allblack Chanel boutique – those seamed, flared pants! Karl! I covet them still! – but failing to lure us in to Lilly Pulitzer, Mimi gracefully compromised at Bottega Veneta, where Margot chose a $300 muddy-brown striped T-shirt (what would have been in those days called “Fall” colors) that I never once saw her wear. At dinner that night – served from the left, cleared from the right - Mimi held forth ever so gently that we really should consult her decorator, Mark Hampton, about our new West 16th & 5th apartment. Said crumbling brownstone was at that moment overrun by rats since the upstairs tenant – a New Yorker “about town” columnist - had stuffed bread in the walls because she was mad at the landlord. However, we agreed to accept a pair of “feminine wingback chairs” to help us achieve that Hampton effect in the unfortunate event that we might not be able to afford his full services on our cocktail-waitress and media-intern salaries. We ended up arranging the chairs - months later - on either side of our “Old Dead White Men” bookshelf, under neon signs and Marlon Brando posters we’d scrounged off the street in the East Village. I had developed a severe ear infection on the trip down to Florida, so scuba diving never happened and we ended up simply driving around at night looking for fun, searching for other 20-somethings. It was harder than you’d think. Everyone in Palm Beach seemed to exist in some similar, vaguely defined age bracket. And the only club we could find was an old school indoor-outdoor bar full of clearly older people prowling for one another and completely disinterested in us (we returned the favor in spades). In New York City we regularly stumbled over JFK Jr., Matt Dillon, and the teenaged DiCaprio-

Posen Power in Soho NYC

A visit to Stephen Posen’s home and art studio By Rachel Vancelette

S

tephen Posen’s art studio is a striking reminder of the famed days when contemporary artists first colonized the cast-iron buildings of Soho during the 1960-70s. The studio designed to house some of Posen’s most prize possessions includes an extensive art library, a vintage hat and hat stand collection, a selection of vintage land-cameras along with some special belongings that Posen himself recovered abandoned right on the New York City streets. The personal collections are daily reminders of his international travels both near and far. These influences can be seen in his multiple-year series of photographs focused on items from local flea markets, exotic locals and quiet scenes from the Posen family farm in nearby Pennsylvania. The father to noted fashion designer Zac Posen is very passionate about his family, friends and most of all his art. Flashing back to 2013 and Posen’s project pop-up art exhibition which presented a selection of photographs and painting collages at the time, the event reminded one of the old days of Gramercy art hopping. Presented at the top of the

famous Gramercy Park Hotel, the estimated 18 million dollar penthouse hosted multiple special events and artists’ discussions. Together with savvy galleriest Rachel Churner of Churner and Churner, at the time the duo broke new ground to present artwork outside the conventional realm of the art gallery parameters which had many art world insiders knocking at the door. “We strive to provide a private oasis for art lovers and collectors alike.” The venue by “private invite-only” stated Rachel Churner. Visitors included many from the top fashion, art world and celebrity elite including guests such as Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld, Performa’s Roselee Goldberg and former Yale classmate artist Chuck Close at the time. Posen’s passion for engaging the younger generation of artists makes him a progressive creative leader in the field as he continues to push boundaries and break all the rules. In those days news of Roitfeld’s new venture to open a New York City permanent art gallery space had rumors swirling that Posen may pop up as one of his latest discoveries or perhaps with a series of new exhibition pop-ups in a different cities?....

Instead, Posen’s retrospective exhibition appeared at the famed art dealer Vito Schabel’s downtown gallery in 2018. The art exhibition presented a renewal and rediscovery of Posen’s paintings from the 1960 to 1970s, and a provided a fresh look at early breakthroughshaped canvases. To think Posen’s debut was nearly decades ago at Soho’s OkHarris and Robert Miller galleries. One thing is for certain, Posen continues to possess the creative power to impact a generation and keeps us asking for more. A true NYC story for Soho, it will be refreshing to see what Posen’s new body of art work will be since the Covid19 pandemic lock down. One thing remains the same... his dedication and his continue artistic endeavors give us all hope and a true bird’s eye view into the beloved city of New York and the mystic of the Power of Posen. ROBERT MANN GALLERY

ith over 40 years in the fine art photography market Robert Mann has played a key role in establishing an international market for both classical and contemporary photographs. Robert has been instrumental in launching the careers for many artists as well as enhancing the collectability and value of many established photographers. He has placed significant works in major museum, corporate and private art collections. Robert began working with pioneering dealer Harry Lunn in Washington D.C. in the mid 1970’s, he then went on to direct the LIGHT Gallery in New York, one of the earliest public galleries established exclusively for the promotion of fine art photography. Striking out on his own in 1985 Robert launched his first public gallery from a townhouse space on Manhattan’s upper east side from where he exhibited artists such as Ansel Adams, Walker Evans, Robert Frank, O. Winston Link, Richard Misrach and Aaron Siskind. In the late 1990’s Robert was the first photography gallery to relocate to the new art neighborhood of Chelsea, settling into a 6,000 square foot space. The exhibition program expanded to include large-scale contemporary artists and the gallery remained a fixture in Chelsea for over twenty years.

Robert has now relocated back to a townhouse space on the upper east side just one block from the Metropolitan Museum of Art where he maintains an intimate exhibition space by appointment. The gallery continues it’s program with classical masters as well as showcasing contemporary artists such as Julie Blackmon, Cig Harvey and Murray Fredericks to name a few. ORLY COGAN

W

hen first walking into Orly Cogan’s studio, I am immediately struck by the size and complexity of the work. All stitched by her own hand, the larger pieces are breathtaking as we are used to seeing handwork in a much smaller scale. These pieces are ambitious, delicate, soft in tone yet intimate and convey a story with bold imagery and complex multi layering scenarios. Cogan’s enthusiastic faith in sensual indulgence is clear. Initially at a glance the viewer is transported into a fantastical dream-like world of frolicking Renaissance figures confidently drawn and co-mingling with fairytale heroines, and animals. The work incorporates art history references and imagery with biblical and Pagan undertones that helps inform the narratives. Upon closer examination the viewer finds layers of texture and varied

line work, appliqué and painting all on delicate fabrics that serve as a foundation for a kind of two way mirror into like minded dreams of past and present. Cogan poetically creates her work with a contemporary edge, bringing wit, humor and a bit of subversion which makes us feel like we may be closer to catching a glimpse of a kind of public intimacy where for a moment we feel like we could be in on a secret. Orly Cogan has been creating feminist fiber based work for over twenty years. Her art has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the world. She has been published and recognized in an art movement that finds itself front and center today. Originally trained in painting, Cogan went to The Cooper Union and the Maryland Institute College of Art as well as studying

figure drawing in Florence Italy. Cogan’s paintings evolved to embroidered mixed media works in the late 1990’s. At that time only a select few contemporary artists were working in this medium. Working out of two studios, one an intimate space on the upper east side the other in Cold Spring, New York, Cogan creates fiber pieces, works on paper and site specific installations of various sizes. B

efore it all began, Kourosh Mahboubian was born into a family of art dealers, so the art world has always been the backdrop of his life, shaping and guiding his vision that living with art is a necessity rather than a luxury. Growing up, he watched his father and their friends build a number of incredible art collections. There was such a broad diversity of subject matter, from antiquities and Islamic art, to tribal masks, old master paintings, impressionist works and modern and contemporary art. Each collection bore witness to the story of a unique collector. As he developed his eye, he came to understand that a good collection is greater than the sum of its parts. He also learned that the best ones are assembled with extraordinary passion. He became an art dealer in his own right in 1988, when he founded his first gallery, Cyrus Gallery. HOW TO GET YOUR SHORT STORIES PUBLISHED Conversation with Becky Tuch, Lit Mag News Roundup By Adam Kluger

Why are literary magazines so important? It's really the only space that gives opportunity to writers who are publishing short stories and don't yet have a collection to market. They are a place for poetry, experimental work, flash fiction, and hybrid work that doesn't really see itself in bookstores and mainstream publications. They are really necessary both for writers to develop their early publications and also to develop their confidence and grow. They also provide a space for writers to see what their contemporaries are working on, which can be really exciting, alternative stuff. The corporate stranglehold over the book industry is intense. I consider lit mags important for both aesthetic and moral reasons. How can writers keep up their morale when submitting to magazines? First, have your work read by a few trusted readers. Once you get a couple of readers who say, “This is great. Send it out. It's ready," do not stop sending it out. You will get rejections and you may start thinking, OK these magazine editors are right. But if you feel strongly about the work and you’ve had others you trust to tell you it’s ready, then you just have to keep going and you have to believe in that piece. I just had a story accepted that had been rejected 22 times (laugh). I had been submitting to this magazine for 15 years. It sounds like a cliché but it is really true: Just don't stop sending the piece out. Don't worry about rejections, it doesn't mean anything just keep letting it roll off your back and keep sending it and keep finding new markets. There are many magazines that everyone is submitting to. They are insanely competitive, so it’s fine to send your work there first, but expect to be rejected. Don't worry about it and keep trying. There are so many other magazines and you will find a place for your work. The more targeted your submission can be the more likely you are to have success. What are your favorite literary magazines? I love them all (laugh). I really love Granta out of England. They publish excellent stuff. I also really like Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope. Very hard to get into but they are really cool. Honestly, there are so many and I admire them all for different reasons. I love when magazines play with the physical form of the journal, like Ninth Letter and TAB Journal. Some magazines–Hobart, Barrelhouse, BOOTH, Pine Hills Review, streetcake (also based in England)–have a great sense of humor about what they’re doing, and I love that. I also appreciate magazines that try 92

to reach audiences beyond academia, such as Ratte Poetry Magazine, and magazines that focus on specific experiences that cut across demographics, such as Consequence Journal or Literary Mama. It’s genuinely hard to single out any favorite. Once you begin to study them and talk to the editors and learn about their history, you discover how different each of them is. Colorado Review, for instance, was founded anonymously. To this day the Editor does not know who the original founders were. How can this not lend this magazine a certain wonderful air of mystery that just makes you dig it? Should writers have a publishing game plan or philosophy? I think so. How meticulous each writer is will really be up to them. Some writers keep detailed spreadsheets; others have everything on post-it notes flying all over the room. I’m personally not too hyper-detailoriented about where I submit. The main thing is to familiarize yourself with literary magazines as much as possible. But I'm on the side of the writer and I always tell people don't get bogged down. We are all busy, working full-time, caring for others, and so on. I know that it's hard to read every magazine, so don't freak out. You are going to make mistakes and that's fine and you may be surprised. My first acceptance was from a magazine in upstate New York. I didn’t know a thing about it. I sent in a kind of dark-humored story set in a Connecticut hospital, about a Jewish family, some of whom were Holocaust survivors. After I was accepted I looked up the magazine and saw it was dedicated to nature and the spirit of the Adirondacks (laugh)! I don't know why they accepted it. Trying to target your work to magazines is definitely not a perfect science. Still, the best road to getting published is to familiarize yourself with as many literary magazines as possible. Read the journals, read or watch interviews with the editors, follow them on social media, and try to pick up their vibe. Spend at least ten minutes looking at their website to figure out if they’re funny or serious or edgy or what, and then you'll be able to better target your work. Would a "Blue Ocean Strategy" of targeting the rest of the world instead of the obvious, typical targets (e.g The New Yorker, Kenyon Review, Paris Review, etc) make more sense to promote one's writing? Definitely. There are thousands of great lit mags out there, so many that writers really do not need to fixate exclusively on the tippy top 1%. Besides which, those magazines might not even be appropriate for you,


as a writer. Why stress about publishing in The New Yorker if that’s not even the kind of fiction or poetry you write? What is so great about the lit mag world is the variety. I really do think that whatever type of thing you write, there’s a journal with that aesthetic somewhere. And connecting with those editors, making contact with those like-minded writers, appearing in magazines you personally admire for whatever personal idiosyncratic reason, is so much more satisfying than just trying to publish somewhere because powerful people told you to. If the literary world is akin to the art world, do gatekeepers determine who will be considered the next Andy Warhol or the next Tama Janowitz? I don't think the literary world is as bad as the art world, where 5% of the galleries control 95% of the art or something crazy like that. There are definitely concerns in book publishing with the Big Five (or is it Big Four now?) publishing houses controlling so much of what gets published. At any rate, that’s certainly not the case in the world of literary magazines. Still, in the art world and the literary world gatekeepers do miss a lot. That's part of the big diversity initiative right now. I think gatekeepers need to recognize how subjective their tastes are, and how biased they can be--just because they don't deem something as being worthy doesn't mean objectively that it's not worthy. It's just about their own individual tastes and I think more gatekeepers are starting to actually realize that. That said, yes, the discovery of new talent is partly what makes lit mags so exciting. They're the venues that publish the first works of writers who may go on to have big literary careers. Editors love being able to say they published the first story or poem or essay by a writer who is now well-known. I love encountering a writer for the first time in a lit mag, then seeing their name come up in all these different places over time. How do you define great writing? Is it like a song where everything works together beautifully and is intertwined and you just know it and feel it viscerally? For me the language is important. I can't read something where the language is flat. It hurts (laugh). If I'm reading something and there's something about the prose or there's a cliche in there, then something turns off in my brain. I just can't take it. My own taste also veers toward the story. I like stories. So when you have that combination of the language and the story working in tandem it's just an incredible experience. And there are other things that I value like ideas that are valuable to me, so, it can play on many cylinders. Is the idea important, is the language fresh, is the story there, are your fingernails dug deep into the character? It really depends on the work but for me, language is pretty up there. How do certain literary magazines become prestigious? Is it the number of readers? How long they've been around? A lot of it has to do with how many awards the magazine has won, whether they’ve gotten grants and/or had their work appear in year-end anthologies. Who they publish is also important. If they are publishing big-name writers that can add to the prestige of a literary magazine. Some of it is how long they have been around as some have been around since the early 1900s. Some of it is how competitive they are to break into, which can be found on Duotrope, which is a great resource if you want to find out specific data related to literary magazines.

Do folks in the literary world, literary agents, and publishing houses look askance at the literary magazines, or do they look at them as a valuable source of undiscovered talent? Definitely a valuable source. A lot of agents who are still building up their lists look to literary magazines. I know a lot of writers who found agents through being published in literary magazines. How do you see the role of agents for writers? Can agents help writers achieve greater status? I don't think getting a literary agent is the end goal for any writer. I think an agent is an aid to help you get where you want to go. If you want to publish a book and connect with readers, an agent is going to help you get there. I don't think of having an agent as a status thing. I had an agent for a while and ended up firing him, nothing against him he was perfectly lovely but he wasn't able to sell my book. There was some status, I suppose, but the feeling of status didn't do much for me ultimately (laugh). At this point, I look at agents as vehicles to hopefully help you get to where you want to go with your work. If your goal is to get a readership they are going to help you do that. I wouldn't encourage writers to get agents solely in order to achieve status. That's a pretty depressing goal (laugh). How does the literary world communicate with each other? On-line conversations? A lot is happening on Twitter. A lot of conversation is happening in universities. Through MFA programs. Professors. Conferences. Ideas get passed down from teachers to students. Mentors to students. Writers talk with other writers. Editors talk to other editors. Writers meet editors by publishing in their magazines. And it is just sort of a small world. I've been doing this lit mag work since 2008, so, I've gotten to know many writers and editors that way. Also by taking and teaching classes, social media, conferences, and just reaching out personally. What is your goal with your terrific Lit Mag News Roundup Newsletter? I love bringing people together, especially people who aren’t quite professionally “connected” for whatever reason. I hope to lighten things up and make people laugh, while also providing them with resources and information that will empower them. I like knocking down the gates and making the process transparent for as many people as possible. How does it work if someone wants to consult with you? Typically when someone hires me to read their manuscript they will tell me what they’re looking for, such as if they have specific questions about the work, if it’s been getting rejected a lot and they don’t know why, or if they just want big-picture feedback. I read carefully and give them editorial suggestions. If it’s a short story or op-ed and they want market suggestions, I’ll provide a list of magazines that I think would be a good fit. Sometimes a writer hires me when they feel a piece is ready and they just want me to suggest magazines for it. I’ll provide a list of what I think are the most realistic markets for the work. eam work makes the dream work! Take a look inside of a polo barn and its surroundings. What do you see? Grooms, professionals, a manager, trucks, trailers, paddocks, wheelbarrows, jerseys, tents, water coolers, wraps, saddles, bridles, hay, feed, supplements… the list goes on. How do all of these elements come together? We are talking about taking care of prey animals after all. They need constant care and attention for just basic needs, with an even more intense program to become powerful, well-muscled athletes ready to fly at 40 miles an hour and withstand a hard bump (i.e. a ride-off) without injury. What would you say is the most important element on the list? The people. How else would you turn the lights on in the barn? That being said, it is important how everyone works together, works with the horses, with the veterinarian and the farrier, and how they prepare and execute a well turnedout team and equines on game day. “The first element to a successful organization is the people,” Petra Sobotova agrees, owner of Orea Polo Team

based in Wellington, Florida. “It seems an obvious answer that an organization needs players, grooms, a veterinarian, and farrier but it’s more than that. It’s important to find trustworthy people whose ambitions are aligned with your own and to take into account their goals and personalities when managing them.” Sobtova’s team just won the Aspen Valley Cup 8-Goal Final at Grand Champions Polo Club and recently competed in the Club’s Sieber Memorial 12-Goal. A normal day in my own polo barn would start around 6am for the grooms (often earlier, depending on the weather), I would arrive around 7:30, 8 sometimes 9 depending on my other commitments. Once a month or more frequently as-needed the farrier (specialist in equine hoof care) has arrived to trim, correct or fit new shoes. At that point in the morning, the grooms have taken the horses on “set,” i.e. up to six horses led by one mounted rider, the horses are connected via cleverly tied breakaway (just in case) lead ropes. Alternate mornings, the professionals or “pilot” (usually a rider with a professional handicap, assigned Spring 2022

to the horse training for the organization) may be stick and balling, schooling, or simply riding to keep the horses in shape and queued up for the next game. Feeding begins, perhaps blankets or fly masks are fitted depending on the weather, and icing is applied or medicines are given. Some barns employ a chiropractor and utilize hydrotherapy, massage, acupuncture, laser and shockwave treatments on a schedule. The veterinarian comes a couple of times a week—more often depending on the level of play— checking for injuries, gut issues and prescribing preventatives, maintenance and healing remedies. You will often see osteotherapy, and regenerative therapies like Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell therapy. Siesta time! Or perhaps mate time to stay awake. Mate tea is a traditional South American caffeine-rich infused tea served in a gourd with a stainless steel Bombilla straw. You will see these often at polo matches and in the hands of a barn member mid morning and mid afternoon. The grooms resume an hour or so later, prepping for the next set, training or game. The day ends around 6 or 7pm, often later depending on the movements of the day. Professionalism is key in a well-run polo operation, says Agustin Arellano. Arellano hails from Indian Mound Polo Club in Wellington, Florida. He has operated as both a manager and playing professional for several years. “I think the most important element in a polo organization is professionalism. I think if you treat a polo organization like a professional sports team it levels up everyone and everything around you. You treat the horses like athletes, you treat the grooms and pilots like the professionals they are and everyone takes their job more seriously. Which in turn, creates a winning atmosphere,” says Arellano. Winning, without a doubt, cannot happen unless you have… the horses. These polo ponies are not just meant to be operable, they are specifically bred and even more selectively chosen. “It’s important to not only maintain a strong string but to also maintain a pipeline to ensure that your string of horses remains strong in the future,” Sobtova says. While most sponsors and professionals are maintaining and playing their selected string, they are always on the lookout for the next best pony or replicas of their favorites for future seasons.

And what would an organization do without flexibility? “In polo, often issues arise at a moment's notice— though new opportunities can arise just as quickly. Regardless, the organization must be agile enough to react quickly to change, good or bad, in order to succeed,” says Sobotova. The game was just changed from Thursday at 4pm to Wednesday at 11 am. t was truly a transformative experience meeting spiritual life coach, Sharda Geer, who takes a holistic approach to healing by focusing on a person’s interrelated physical and metaphysical components. I was skeptical, as our society is conditioned to believe that only doctors and pharmaceuticals can effectively treat our ailments. However, these traditional approaches to therapy often serve as a bandaid over our wounds and do not treat the root of the problem. Sharda is a very charismatic, gracious, gentle, and nurturing mentor. She does not pass judgment. She helps us to understand that what happened to us in life is not our fault. Yet, it is our responsibility to heal, and we can only look within ourselves to meet needs in adulthood that were not met in our childhood. Through Sharda’s guidance and training, which includes textbook reading, written assignments, and exercises to practice at home, she empowers us to develop and utilize the tools we already have to advance our souls and manifest a life we want. We used the healing powers of crystals, incense, and essential oils. We burned our written unwanted memories, thoughts, and feelings. We emptied ourselves of the clutter and garbage, so that we could facilitate the flow of new and positive energy. We cried, danced, and laughed, and since what we consume in our bodies also impacts how we feel and behave, we ate delicious, organic, and vegan cuisine every breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by Sharda’s delightful chefs. It truly was a journey of self-healing and exploration. I returned home after our retreat with such enlightment that everything in my life that previously did not make sense to me, suddenly made sense.

What inspired you to pursue spiritual life coaching and empowerment? First, I realized that we, by default, take on the ideas, opinions, fears, outlook, aspirations, beliefs, etc. (inner construct) from the folks we met here when we came into this life (parents, society, teachers, leaders, etc.). Though there is tremendous value and necessity in this, most of us were not really given the permission, tools, and space to create our own version of what life is and how we fit in. Yes, we created some degree of individuality, but not enough that we can firmly say, “This is me.” The version of “me” is often skewed with someone else’s model of the world and/or my own resistance of such. I realized that I was trying to fit other people’s inner construct into my own unique reason for coming into this life and it felt incredibly paralyzing and confusing. Therefore, I needed to find a way to unwrap or build my own inner construct taking what I needed from others and leaving the rest. To do this, I needed some tools to take down what was already built, in a safe and sane way, and re-create what I needed in order to fulfil my purpose here and to do so while respecting and appreciating what was defaulted within me and the people who put it there. The second reason that I pursued my line of work has to do with emotions and diseases. Through a series of my own illnesses, I discovered that unhealed feelings and emotions, left unmanaged over a period of time, will eventually develop into blockages to the flow of the natural life force energy that makes this body, my mind and soul, function, thereby creating sickness as simple as headaches, colds, flu, tiredness and of course more serious ones like depression, cancer, heart disease etc. I wanted to learn how to release the feelings that were trapped. he power of positive energy can restore a person’s life and outlook. n Thursday, March 10, 2022, over 100 guests gathered in Palm Beach at the Palm Beach’s Tideline Resort Hotel to support Veteran Services USA breakthrough PTSD treatment for those suffering from the debilitating effects of trauma. The evening raised over $200,000 and was hosted by VSUSA co-founders Eddie Dovner, Charles Everhardt, and Cheri Kaufman. “There are 7,300 suicides among veterans a year – these are heroes that fought to preserve our freedom, now VSUSA is helping to preserve theirs,” said Dovner in his welcome to the event. Kaufman noted, “For too long the nation’s defenders are cheered as they go into battle but become invisible on return. his January 27th, Palm Beach native Jesse Stoll re-imagined the way a youthful generation kicked off the season of giving back with his commitment to Pap Corp’s Imagination Gala, which celebrated its 70th year supporting cancer research. A secondgeneration legend in the music business, in addition to successful talent producer and concert promoter, Stoll as this year’s gala entertainment chair, brought Starship featuring Mickey Tomas to the Palm Beach community. Jesse Stoll honored his father Jon Stoll, founder of Fantasma Productions and past president of the National Association of Concert Promoters, with the first ever edition of the Jon Stoll Spotlight Award. Fantasma Productions, one of the leading independent concert promoters in the country and responsible for booking over 500 concerts a year, brought leading names in entertainment and comedy across South Florida from Mizner Park to the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. Stoll Sr. passed away of cancer and the award not only honored his legacy and commitment to music, but paid tribute to an important figure in the community who is dedicated to fighting cancer. This year, Stoll and his family honored Tico Toress of Bon Jovi. “With the Jon Stoll Spotlight Award we honored someone that Jesse and his family felt are worthy of representing his father’s commitment to music and Stoll Sr’s philanthropic component of going above and beyond to help the community. Both Jesse and his father are known

He was 54 when he died of cancer. It is such an important cause to me. It touches every single person in the world through one of two degrees of separation. Almost everyone has been affected by or lost someone due to cancer. We are so honored to present the first Jon Stoll Spotlight Award and continue his legacy and our career in music and help support cancer research,” said Jesse Stoll. The Imagination Gala, for its third year in a row, catered to the traditional Palm Beach social circuit but also drew a younger crowd because of its Starship theme. Through their innovative theme, inspired by Jefferson Starship, Pap Corp’s gala and their commitment to working with Jesse Stoll and his family, drew a younger demographic to support the cause. Their dedication to finding ways to re-imagine living in a world that is cancer free redefines how we celebrate philanthropy. As the only truly themed charity gala in Palm Beach, the Imagination Gala brought rooms of innovative themed décor featuring galactic themed projections to accompany the famed Starship band featuring Mickey Thomas. The Black-Tie evening featured a coursed meal of lobster thermidor and filet along with a live auction. Guests danced the night away to Thomas’s hits, “We Built This City” and “Never Gonna Stop Us Now”. An electronic violinist and live DJ were some additional accoutrements that the estimated 400 to 500 guests who attended enjoyed. Cocktail hour was from 6 to 7 pm and the gala ran till 12 am. This year’s gala was chaired by Janet and Mark Levy and took place at the Breakers Hotel on Palm Beach Island. newly expanded 2 day version of Big Dog Ranch Rescue’s Wine, Women & Shoes event at the Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach on March 5th & 6th raised over 3 million dollars to rescue, heal and home endangered dogs. The sold out fashion show drew 1,200 guests over the two days making it the most popular fundraiser of the season. The full day extravaganza was Chaired by Sher Kasun and JoAnna Myers. Animal advocate Lara Trump served as Honorary Chairwoman and Barbara Gilbert and Peggy Wheeler served as Event Co-chairs. Guests began their day with a unique poolside shopping experience featuring live entertainment and refreshments and then moved into the Grand Ballroom where the largest runway in South Florida set the stage for an afternoon of fun. Big Dog Ranch Rescue Founder and CEO, Lauree Simmons, revealed that the 14 year old rescue organization has now saved over 50,000 lives, “Because of your support and generosity over the years we have been able to rescue 50,000 precious heartbeats.” The 50,000th rescue, now named “50K”, had just arrived at the ranch two days before the event following an emergency plea from Palm Beach County Animal Control. The German Shepard had been shot in the head and needed immediate medical care. “50K will make a full recovery and be ready for a new home following surgery to his jaw, Simmons continued, “But this year due to high inflation some dogs may not be so lucky. Shelters may have to euthanize twice as many dogs as before so we must do more to insure that doesn’t happen.” Simmons also thanked the WWS committee as well as her board giving special recognition to Dorothy Bradshaw, Jill Chaifetz, Rob Thomson and Marti Ziegelbauer for their ongoing commitment to saving lives.


It was also announced that, due to the incredible generosity of Doug and Mala Fabick, the newest facility at the ranch will be breaking ground. The Mala Lindsay and Doug Fabick Education and Event Barn will host conferences on animal welfare and classes for thousands of school children to educate the public about proper dog care and how to work towards eliminating dog homelessness. Sunday’s show was highlighted by a visit from President Donald J. Trump who greeted guests and took photos with Big Dog Ranch Rescue supporters. he Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) hosted their annual Pro-Am Tennis & Golf Tournament in South Florida. The tournaments were a part of a five-day event that combines the 2022 Milken Institute South Florida Dialogues and annual Pro-Am Tournaments.

The Milken Institute South Florida Dialogues in Palm Beach took place over three days, which included the annual PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament and special golf tournament; and concluded with three days of events in Miami. The highlight of the first night in Palm Beach was a gala dinner at the home of Steve and Andrea Wynn with entertainment by John Fogerty and Master Mentalist Lior Suchard.

oviesMakingADifference rocked the Sailfish Club on Tuesday, March 1st with their 7th annual Mardi Gras Dinner/Dance celebrating the over 150 survivors of human trafficking in the U.S. they have aided. Founder/CEO Diana Davis updated the sold out ballroom with her award-winning feature films that expose human trafficking and child labor in existence today, in our own country. The non-profit organization rescues these young girls and boys from around the country, and even right here in Palm Beach County. Her mission is “MakingADifference” by producing socially conscious feature films, then directly aiding the survivors upon whom these films shed light. Guests entered into a festive glittering Mardi Gras atmosphere, created by co-chair Mary Bryant McCourt, with spectacular hand-crafted centerpieces by Margaret Donnelly, who both work tirelessly to support the cause along with Sylvia Mesaric, Barbara Heilman, Susan Lundin, with Ivana Mesaric and Ju Ju Bernstein at the helm of the Young MMAD Friends. Surrounded by hearts, a warm and welcoming black and white striped "Send Them Love" video tent was created by Kelly Crosby Heyniger to challenge supporters to fight trafficking by sending love to someone dear to them, donating $22/mo in '22 and raising awareness of how easily young girls can fall into the hands of predators because they are desperately looking for love. Sariah Hammon and Jayson Dutson, who have been helped and are now part of the MMAD Family also spoke emotionally about the difference the charity has made in their lives. Edwidge Gilbert, author and counselor, who wrote her new book "Victim to Victorious" for MoviesMakingADifference with proceeds benefiting the organization and dedication to Diana, was honored with the Jack Koch Award for MakingADifference in tandem with local realtor, Kelly Walsh, who works hands-on with the survivors, arranging cars, bringing food, even housing additional young people when the MMAD Safe House was full. Both remarkable women making the time to call Diana every day to ask, "what do we need to do for one of our young survivors or for you today?"

The spirit of giving was in full force with photographers Christopher Fay, Scott Giddens and Elina Krivulets capturing the magical night gratis. Upon entry, Anya Kov gave her time to greet guests with the beautiful sounds of her violin before joining her date Dan Bauer, as a guest herself. Getting the entire party up and dancing was rockin' Billy Rogan on guitar, electrifying DJ Lexey electric violin and jammin' Al Johnson on sax, all generously volunteering their talent and time to join Josh Anchondo with Supreme Events who was sponsored by longtime supporter Mindy Heilman. But the King of Mardi Gras was most definitely 100.3 radio host Mic McGann who as a labor of love once again emceed the evening and raised funds with a live auction, even auctioning off his sensational shoes and jacket. I am very excited to become a part of the Metropolitan Magazine Palm Beach family. Photographing events and introducing my associate photographers to these opportunities is what I do. Monthly I will be sharing meaningful images of people experiencing what South Florida has to offer. I’m looking forward to my first time visit to Art Basel in Miami on December 2-4th. If you haven’t been, put it on your calendar. As a photographer and artist I’m excited to support fellow artists. In this my inaugural column I am introducing noted abstract expressionist J. Steven Manolis, founder of the Manolis Projects, which represents over 40 artists and provides private curation services, offering visitors an immersive behind-the-scenes view of a working studio and gallery. This year for Art Basel Miami, Manolis Projects is proud to present “Hunt Slonem: The Early Years, An Art Rich and Strange + Manolis Projects Artist Group Show.” Hunt Slonem is an American colorist and figurative painter, best known for his large Neo-Expressionist oil paintings of tropical birds, butterflies, and bunnies. Manolis Projects features a large collection of these rare early works, as well as his iconic salon-style Bunny Wall. Also featured is artist Ron Burkhardt, the founder of Notism, a genre he describes as exalting the power of private thoughts expressed in hand-written text – its style, texture, intensity, dynamism, aestheticism, and the primal exuberance of precious memory recall. His works are easily recognized by their striking colors, bold shapes, and meticulous attention to detail.
