hen you spot Entertainment Correspondent Jill Dobson at a movie premiere, you might just wonder why she isn't on the red carpet instead of behind a press barricade. Dobson, with her All-American, "movie star" good looks, could easily be cast as the female lead of a hit movie or popular TV series! But for Dobson, a critically acclaimed TV journalist, being behind the scenes and getting to know what makes celebrities tick is much more fun. As an always-busy Entertainment Correspondent, Jill Dobson has conducted on-camera interviews with Kate Winslet, Zendaya, Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, Margot Robbie, Gwyneth Paltrow and countless other superstars. Dobson has reported on celebrities for CBS, E!, Fox News, HLN, MSNBC, The Today Show, Vh1, and more. She has also conducted extensive interviews for Associated Press Television. Dobson, an extremely talented writer, originally planned on a career in magazine journalism, but changed her focus to broadcast journalism. "I absolutely love magazines and always have. I have a bookshelf full of magazines at home. I recently realized I had interviewed every single person on my magazine covers! But, I interviewed all those stars for TV, rather than for a magazine, which was my original life plan. It's like the universe is telling me, 'Hey, your dreams came

46 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

true - just not in quite the way you imagined!'" In the Beginning... "I grew up in the one-stoplight town of Quincy, Michigan. When I was ten years old, my cousin Lori Faulkner moved to New York City to study at F.I.T. She focused on children's clothes and invited to me walk the runway in her designs for her senior thesis. I loved telling my fourth-grade friends I was jetting off to New York to model!" "That was my first airplane ride - and my first visit to New York City. It couldn't have been more different than my hometown, but I loved it." "When I was 13, I discovered 'TEEN magazine at my local grocery store. Forget boys - that magazine was my first true love! I saved up enough babysitting money to subscribe. I studied every page of every issue - for years! As time went on, I started reading other magazines and I noticed most of them were published in New York City. So I decided that's where I would live someday." As a Miss USA contestant, Dobson returned to New York City in 2000. The Miss Michigan USA winner (and eventual Miss USA finalist) joined other contestants in NYC for a weekend of media appearances. Dobson studied journalism at Troy University, eventually focusing on broadcasting. During graduate school at Michigan State University, she moved to New York City to intern at Fox News Channel. On-air talents John Gibson and Heather Nauert mentored Dobson, and introduced her to her future husband. "John Gibson saw potential in me, so he called his agent at

William Morris, who suggested I meet with his young colleague, Jim Ornstein." It was love at first sight - but more matchmaking was in store. "Heather Nauert was a reporter at Fox News who happened to know both Jim and me. She vouched for Jim, telling me he was a really great person. These days Heather is the Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State. Whenever I see her on the news, I think, 'There's my matchmaker!'" Dobson lives in Manhattan with her husband, WME talent agent Jim Ornstein and their 6-year-old son, Shane and 4-year-old daughter, Elle. "My husband and children were born in New York City, but I'm a transplant from Quincy, Michigan. I don't have any childhood friends here in the city, but I've found it's an amazing place to make new friends. I met my friend Rachel standing on the sidewalk, waiting for a traffic light to change. We were both pushing strollers. We started chatting and realized our babies were exactly the same age. Now those babies are six years old and our friendship is still going strong!" Dobson covers movies for her job, then spends her free time hosting friends at her home theater. "I love having my girlfriends over for movie night! I start off serving low-fat popcorn and Diet Coke... but inevitably someone smuggles in chocolate or rosĂŠ and ruins the whole low-cal vibe," Dobson laughs. Dobson's focus on health starts first thing in the morning, where she can often be found at SLT, Steep Rock Bouldering,

or FlyWheel. "I ran cross-country in high school and college. These days I compete with the other names up on the leaderboard at FlyWheel. I love pushing myself to my absolute limit to try to get first place. On the days I'm battling just to get fifth or sixth place, I can hear my high school coach, Andy Parzych, in my head, telling me that every point counts and to give my all for the team. Then I work even harder. It's a trip down memory lane - and an amazing workout." "I love SLT, even though it's incredibly hard. I've taken more than 100 classes and it's still a huge challenge every single moment of every single class. I've definitely been mistaken - recently - for a first-time student. It's so sad! I apparently have no natural core strength. But I'll keep trying and hopefully someday I'll get through a class without stopping to rest. A girl can dream, right?" "My first rock wall climbing experience was for a local news story when I was a reporter at WWMT in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I finished my report from the top of the wall and couldn't wait to go again. These days, when my kids are literally starting to climb the walls at home, we head to a climbing gym together and see who can go highest." Charity Dobson's favorite cause is City Harvest, which collects 59 million pounds of excess food each year and delivers it free of charge to soup kitchens, food pantries and other community food programs. Dobson is a volunteer with the organization. "We have to look out for our neighbors. City Harvest just makes so much sense. Of course we should rescue the extra food from supermarkets and restaurants, and give it to our hungry neighbors." Dobson has been a supporter of City Harvest for years - and encourages others

to do the same. "If you're able to help deliver food, or make a donation, or both, please help City Harvest feed our hungry neighbors." Another passion of Jill's is the theater. "My friend Kelly Stillwell is a Broadway stage manager and I've seen every show she's worked on, from Dear Evan Hansen to Frozen the Musical. My friend Anna White took me to see Hamilton with her. Alicia Rancilio, Amanda Coletta, Rachel Klein and Mara Kanner are my other theater-going pals. Together we're keeping the Great White Way in business!" "My friend Dr. Kelly Powers invites me to all the coolest events this city has to offer. We all need an 'in the know' friend to get us out of our day-today routine. Kelly took me to last year's Diner en Blanc - an outdoor dinner at Lincoln Center with thousands of people, all of them wearing white outfits, white accessories, white headdresses - you name it. It was quite a scene. I also joined Kelly at the Victory Cup Polo Match on Governor's Island. If an event requires a fancy dress or feathery headdress, Kelly and I will be there!" Dobson works for various media outlets on a freelance basis, which grants her flexibility and helps her achieve balance between work and home life. "I'm all over the place, so sometimes it's hard for my friends and family to know which channel or show I'll pop up on. I tell them it's easiest to look at the Instagram hashtag #JillDobsonVideos. Either that or you're going to have to do a lot of channel-flipping!" "On any given day, you can tell what I've been up to, just by looking at my face. Bare face with sunscreen? Playground with the kids. Full TV makeup? A sit-down with Jennifer Lawrence. Full makeup with a layer of sunscreen over it? Let's just say it's been a busy day!" Dobson will next be seen on the upcoming A&E Biography: Teen Idols.

JILL DOBSON'S CELEBRITY SCOOP Favorite Celebs "Jason Bateman is one of my favorites. I was a big fan of Arrested Development. He's so funny and he's done so much great work. Fun fact: Jason Bateman and my husband were actually born the same year, the same month, the same day. I brought this up one time in an interview. Now every time I interview him he just volunteers to say happy birthday to my husband and he always makes some sort of hilarious joke about it on tape. And so every year I'll save that tape, even if the interview is from July, and show it to my husband for his birthday in January. It has become a birthday tradition at our home." "Everyone loves Reese W itherspoon and after meeting her, I feel that way even more. She has a clothing line called Draper James and at a recent red carpet I wore a Draper James dress. She noticed it and complimented it and that was kind of an icebreaker before the interview. She's warm and fun to talk to." "I also really like talking to Hugh Jackman, he seems so nice and the man knows how to give a sound bite," laughs Dobson. "One time I interviewed him for Logan, one of the Wolverine movies- and he talked about how he dressed as that character for Halloween one year and took his son trick or treating and almost no one noticed. He always has some funny stories to share." "I recently interviewed Drew Barrymore and I feel like we could be real friends. We had a very natural rapport. I had a list of questions, but I didn't have to ask anything beyond the first question, because the conversation just naturally flowed in a way that she happened to answer all my planned questions. We were just chatting and it felt so comfortable, like I was with an old friend. She's probably very good

25AMagazine.com | MetMagNy.com | 49

at interviews because she's been doing it her whole life, but deep down I interpreted it to mean we're soul mates!" "I've always loved Gwyneth Paltrow. The first time I interviewed her, I worried she might not be nice and it was going to ruin my long-term fascination. Luckily she was super warm and friendly and I really enjoyed talking to her." "Another one was Madonna. She's from Michigan, I'm from Michigan. And I've always listened to her music. Right before the interview they said, "We've run out of time. You're not going to get to talk to her." I basically begged until they relented. When they took me in for the interview they had to adjust the lights -- while Madonna and I small-talked for 8-10 minutes. And then we had our interview, so I not only got to meet Madonna, I got to chat with her off camera and on camera. A dream come true." "I've interviewed Jennifer Aniston a few times. She is someone everyone knows. We've all watched hundreds of hours of Friends and it's been great every time I've interviewed her. She's such a natural, fun person. And by the way, her hair looks just as good in real life!" "I interviewed Angelina Jolie a few years

50 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

ago on the red carpet while she was with Brad Pitt. At that time, she was on the cover of every magazine- every weekly magazine, every monthly magazine. A red carpet interview can sometimes be really quick and really short. Sometimes actors just walk right by and they don't even talk to you. But Angelina Jolie stopped and we had a nice talk. She was stunning in person, as you might imagine." The Joker's Wild: "The first time I interviewed Jared Leto, he just suddenly unclipped his microphone and walked away in the middle of the interview. My cameraman had never seen anything like that before and was shocked. Apparently Leto wasn't thrilled with one of my questions. It seemed like an innocuous question to me. I asked about his longterm fans who have loved him since My So Called Life. I think at the time he was really focused on music and he didn't want to talk about his previous acting jobs. ... that was my takeaway. I interviewed him again a few years later for the Suicide Squad movie and I was determined that this time we would have a good interview --and we had a great interview," Dobson laughs. Wish List: When I was growing up it was always

my dream to be on The Today Show or be on Oprah. I've gotten to appear on The Today Show sharing celebrity scoop--but the Oprah Winfrey talk show doesn't exist anymore. So I adjusted my dream a little bit and now it's my goal to interview Oprah. Star on the Rise: Joel Kinnaman isn't a household name yet, but I expect him to be one soon. He's been in The Killing, he's been in House of Cards, he has a new Netflix series called Altered Carbon and he's been in Suicide Squad. I've interviewed him multiple times and he was the most surprising interview in that he plays such different characters. He is such a chameleon that I didn't even realize that it was the same person playing all these roles -- and that he's Swedish -- until I started studying up for my first interview with him. He's incredible. Mark my words - he's going far. Dream Gig: "I love Kathie Lee and Hoda --so I'm hoping that they'll decide that they need a new regular sidekick and that Jill Dobson would be the perfect person! I've met each of them out and about in NYC. They're both so genuine and wonderful in person and on TV. I'm hoping to someday appear on Today with Kathie Lee and Hoda.

RED ROOSTER Ha rlem’s Culinary Giant B Y CHRI S T OP HE R A. PAPE | FO O D I MAG E S B Y K ATI E B UR TO N

I

am utterly convinced that New Yo r k ’s t re n d i e s t d i n e r s a r r i v e in packs (or perhaps herds, or better yet, hordes) at the next “it” restaurant; grazing at the newest, “greenest” pastures on the island. From Italian, sushi, and Indian, to the ubiquitous New American, well-to-do financiers, hipsters with trust funds and media types arrive in droves to this or that restaurant. I am privileged enough to say that, on occasion, I form a small cog of this ecosystem, having dined at some of the hottest establishments Gotham has to offer. Be that as it may, what these diners understand is that most of the restaurants they crave to get into will soon, one or two years later, shutter their doors, as the initial sizzle turns into a fizzle. However, there are a lucky few restaurants, who, after an initial bout of popularity, retain the same level of adoration years later. This is exactly the case with Red Rooster, the iconic (and perennially packed) haunt in Harlem.

Opened in 2010, it is as popular as it was 8 years ago. I can personally attest to this fact, as the night I dined there, for the first time, it was bursting at the seams. Located in the heart of Harlem, Red Rooster serves comfort food celebrating the roots of American cuisine and the diverse culinary traditions of the neighborhood. Its name is in honor of the legendary Harlem speakeasy that attracted neighborhood folk, jazz greats, authors, politicians and some of the most noteworthy figures of the 20th century, such as Adam Clayton Powell Jr., Nat King Cole and James Baldwin. My guest and I, a native of Nigeria, so only peripherally aware of the great black American food tradition, were enthralled with each bite; from first to last, we savored the deep flavors and appreciated the fine cookery of the meal. Appetizers included an innovative take on crab cakes, house made cornbread and deviled eggs with chickpea mayo, crispy duck and onion jam, which happened to be one of the best iterations of this dish I’ve ever had. But

the stand-out small plate was the Hamachi collar, which admittedly doesn’t sound like Southern cooking, but it made my hardto-please guest smile with satisfaction. The collar was, suffice it to say, eaten in record time. Onto the larger plates—a meal here would not be complete without eating their famed shrimp and grits. As an ItalianAmerican, grits has always reminded me of polenta. The grits had a perfect consistency, and the shrimp, bathed in a tomato-based stew with okra and chorizo, were tender and perfectly cooked. Red Rooster deserves its sobriquet as a Harlem icon. Its food, atmosphere and energy are all worthy of a visit, and I urge you to make a reservation today! Go and see for yourself why, 8 years later, this is still one of the hottest restaurants in town! 310 Lenox Avenue New York, NY 10027 212.792.9001 redroosterharlem.com

n the firmament of cuisines, Indian is one of the brightest stars. From fragrant curries to tender meats and heavenly aromas, there is much to admire from the subcontinent in terms of its cookery. For those of us who are devotees of this rich kitchen but have found few high-end establishments to satiate the need for luxury Indian dining, look no further than Baar Baar, a new restaurant in NOHO. Baar Baar is a reimagining of the Indian love affair with all things spirited. A first of its kind as an Indian gastro bar, it will change your perception of this great cuisine. Recipes are reworked into modern Indian tapas and sharing plates that pair perfectly with Indian inspired cocktails, turning the humble chakna into sophisticated nibbles and converting thali Chef Sujan

into hearty dishes. F ro m t h e m o m e n t y o u e n t e r t h e restaurant, you know you are in for a treat. It’s open spaces, long bar, mood lighting and moder n décor beckon the diner. What comes next – personable service, well-executed and imaginative drinks, an elevated level of hospitality and, most importantly, delicious food—has marked Baar Baar for instantaneous success. The brainchild of Sujan Sarkar, a celebrated chef in San Francisco, Baar Baar is his vision for moder n Indian c o o k i n g . C h a m p i o n i n g p ro g re s s i v e cooking deeply rooted in tradition, Chef Sujan was an early adopter of the farm-totable movement and his experiments with decades-old recipes have led to the birth of this magnificent restaurant. As for the food, from first bite to last crumb of desert, my guest (a very enthusiastic eater of Indian cuisine) and I were enthralled by the quality of the ingredients, smart presentation and bold flavors of Chef Sarkar. We began with tuna bhel, featuring avocado, tamarind, puffed black rice and green mango. This was almost like a tuna poke, with exceedingly fresh tuna and a pleasant bit of brightness from the green mango. Other dishes we enjoyed were the Chicken 65 with peanut chutney, podi masala and lemon sour cream and veal sweetbread koliwada. As an ardent admirer of veal sweetbreads, I loved the meatiness and richness of this dish; the lemon aioli gave the needed acidity. The Chicken 65 was fragrant, bold, and precise in its cookery. Moving onto the larger dishes, my guest and I thoroughly enjoyed both the traditional butter chicken with red pepper makhana, as well as a monk fish and seafood alleppey curry with sunchoke and fennel oil. Starting with the curry, it was perhaps one of the most surprising Indian dishes I’ve ever had. There was an overall lightness to the dish I was not expecting; it

tasted more like a Thai dish (i.e., coconut curry) than a traditionally more fragrant and bolder Indian curry. The fish and seafood were pristinely fresh, and we very much appreciated this dish. Baar Baar has discovered a winning formula: a reinvention of Indian cuisine that honors the past while moving the level of creativity of the cuisine forward. Combine that with excellent service and a beautiful décor, and you won’t go wrong eating at this bright star.

TWO ITALIAN SUPERSTARS Tavola and Denino’s Greenwich V illage Shine B Y CHR I STO PHE R A. PAPE

W

hen it comes to Italian food, I’m a bit of a snob. Growing up with an award-winning cookbook author grandmother, who insisted on only the freshest and best-quality ingredients, will do that to you. So, whenever I book a table at an Italian restaurant in the city, it is always with excitement and a bit of trepidation. I can never be certain whether the restaurant will do my ancestral homeland proud or be an embarrassment to my people’s proud culinary heritage. Luckily enough, I’m happy to report that these two Italian eateries are worthy of praise. One is a newer addition the Hell’s Kitchen landscape and the other is a Manhattan outpost of a Staten Island favorite, but both will delight and please you. Try them and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed:

TAVOLA

DENINO’S GREENWICH VILLAGE

The idea behind Tavola is regional Italian cooking mainly from Puglia, Rome and Sicily. Inspired by owner Nick Accardi’s extensive travels to these regions, the restaurant serves up some of the most inspired Italian dishes this city has to offer. With the help of his relatives, Nick has secured quality regional ingredients, including single estate Castelvetrano olives and extra virgin olive oil, which he exclusively imports and offers for purchase at Tavola. The restaurant features two wood-burning ovens specially handcrafted in Naples, allowing for a variety of cooking temperatures: one for pizza and one for meats and fish. Speaking of pizza, Tavola features mouthwatering options from the Little Neck clam pie featuring clams, roasted garlic, mozzarella, pepperoncino or the Amalfi with Maryland blue crab, thinly sliced lemon, summer herbs and taleggio. Each pie is made with thoughtfulness and taste as if made back in the motherland.

When it comes to tradition, heritage and name recognition, few restaurants can compete with Denino’s. Famed as the best pizza parlor in Staten Island, this institution can now be found in Manhattan. Originally opened in 1937, it has been serving pizza since 1951. Since then, the restaurant has been renowned for their pizza and Italian dishes, which are prepared daily. Some of the standout appetizers include an eggplant tower with fried eggplant, tomato, fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers with a balsamic glaze and miniature rice balls filled simply with perfectly al dente rice and grated parmesan cheese. On the pizza front, a clam pie with fresh garlic, parsley and olive oil with a sprinkle of grated cheese has consistently been voted as the best pizza in New York City.

ALTANEVE Luxury Brand Creates an All-New Market for Premium Prosecco BY PET ER ELST ON

F

ounded by David Noto, Altaneve specializes in micro-production sparkling wines, Prosecco and Sparkling Rosé, that are all natural, sustainable and vegan with low sulfites and low sugar that guarantee no headache or hangover. Exclusively produced in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains in northeastern Italy, Altaneve wines are unique, even the brand’s name, “Altaneve” (translates to “high snow” in Italian), respectfully pays homage to the snow-capped mountains that can be seen above their vineyards in their town of Valdobbiadene. These vineyards have a uniquely temperate microclimate that lends its unparalleled character to the grapes that make Altaneve wine remarkable. Accolades for Altaneve have ranged from the Wall Street Journal who in reviewing the exclusive Altaneve Z prosecco questioned,

70 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

“Is this the best prosecco in the World ?” whilst online publication liquor.com described it as “the best tasting prosecco.” CNN Money, whilst reviewing Altaneve prosecco made the point that at its best prosecco, “may even start commanding the same respect as a chilled bottle of Veuve Cliquot.” Looking at the market for prosecco Forbes Magazine identified US wine sales as being valued at $62bn in 2016 with a 35% growth in wine consumption over the previous ten-year period and 88% growth in sparkling wine consumption in America. Against this backdrop Impact Databank identified the prosecco segment as having seen explosive (1,100%) growth between 2006 and 2016. Altaneve sees a market niche for its product which is backed up by Beverage Industry research. Bevindustry.com has

identified the average retail price of a bottle of champagne as being $45 with prosecco being under $12. For Altaneve, this creates a premium market niche which is not yet fully exploited by any brand and into which the Altaneve price point of $30 is potentially highly attractive from the perspective of building a substantial market position on the basis of its quality and emergent product reputation. Against this backdrop Altaneve has recently launched a crowd funding campaign to grow their company – funds will enable expansion of production from around 4,000 cases in 2018 to some 65,000 by 2020. Details of the Altaneve campaign are available online at republic.co/altaneve. altaneve.com

THE REVERIE SAIGON Italian Artisry Meets V ietnamese V itality BY W.A. MU LLER

T

he Reverie Saigon is not the place to go if you prefer your hotels as serene sanctuaries. In fact, it is one of the most extravagant hotels in the world, and by far the most glamourous hotel I’ve ever stayed at. The property makes guests feel as if they’re in some surreal sojourn, not the middle of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Decorated with

74 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

haute Italian furniture, dazzling jewels and palatial-style luxury, the Reverie Saigon, since its opening, has found itself atop the world’s most desirable hotel properties and has been consistently voted the best hotel in Asia by several leading publications. The hotel commands both the upper and lower floors of the contemporary, 39-story, mixed-use Times Square development in Ho Chi Minh City. With over-the-top grandeur

that epitomizes the best of Italian design, the hotel transcends expectations, to offer a modern-day thesis on theatrically inspired splendor. From its rooms and suites to its restaurants and bars as well as its cavernous public spaces, all feature undeniable expressions of “fato a mano” (handmade) artistry in the world. As visually stunning as the setting is inside, so too are the expansive views from

the city’s highest hotel. You’ve never seen Saigon like this. From the beautiful and masculine colonial French architecture to the gentle twists of the Saigon River and the panorama of the sprawling city itself, the eyes have much to take in and be pleased with. With entrances on Saigon’s two most storied avenues, Dong Khoi Street and Nguyen Hue Boulevard, the Reverie sits at the center of the city’s sophisticated section: District 1. As Saigon’s mosthappening neighborhood for both business and leisure, D1 has become a sought-after destination for high-end shopping and the city’s best dining spots. Back inside, all rooms (there are 286 in total), have floor-to-ceiling windows, revealing views of Ho Chi Minh City’s everevolving skyline, the Saigon River and the storied Mekong Delta beyond. The 12 categories of guestrooms offer the largest accommodation in the city, with 224 rooms ranging in size from an ample 462-570 square feet, and 62 suites ranging from

a spacious 678 square feet to extravagantly large 3,369 square feet. The interiors were designed by some of Italy’s most recognized furnishing design brands—including Colombostile, Giorgetti, Poltrona Frau Group and Visionnaire—with styles ranging from chic modern to classical European, from whimsically romantic to fanciful and sophisticated. THE ANAM A V ietnamese Paradise BY W.A. MU LLER

A

s a busy New Yorker, I long for nothing more than days spent on an exotic beach. W ith warm sun, stunning views, delicious drinks and a special companion, there is little in the world that can compare. That’s what makes the Anam, on Vietnam’s Cam Ranh Bay, so special. Being one of Vietnam’s top hotels and with access to

76 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

crystalline waters, the Anam, which opened only a few years ago, is a top choice when hunting for your next vacation. It goes without saying that the Anam is a beautiful luxury resort that encapsulates both colonial-era charm and the relaxed atmosphere of an exotic locale. The property has been thoughtfully designed, allowing guests ample space to unwind and enjoy the serene magic of a tropical getaway.

Cam Ranh Bay, a 60-minute flight from Ho Chi Minh City, is on the verge of becoming Vietnam’s biggest beach resort destination, and the Anam is among the first of many multimillion-dollar resorts to open doors along this coastline. Therefore, it’s no wonder that if it’s luxury, privacy and a lovely beach holiday you’re after, this area is ideal. The Anam overlooks almost 1000 feet of beachfront, which averages more than 300

sunny days per year. The luxurious five-star resort boasts 117 villas and 96 rooms and suites. The Anam also features a fine dining grill, an all-day dining restaurant, a classical bar, sports bar and beach club, in-room dining, a 10-treatment-room spa, a 3-D movie theatre, three capacious swimming pools, a ballroom, conference rooms, recreation and fitness center, a tennis court, yoga room and deck, kids club, gift shop and more. The Anam’s design was inspired by Vietnam’s bygone Indochine era. The resort’s romantic appeal draws on this particular epoch, evoking a nostalgic tone with its imperial-style roofs, lanterns, big-bellied water vases, decorative pools, customized mosaic floor tiles and stone pathways. In many places, pillars and horizontal lines frame views across sparkling pools that are edged with villas and palm trees (there are more than 3,000 on the property), which form part of an extensive and beautifully landscaped garden. Leafy plants grow tall against the resort’s buildings, allowing them to recede into the garden, cultivating an impression of a tropical paradise. Each room epitomizes the ultimate in V ietnamese craftsmanship and offers picturesque views of the ocean, headlands, lush gardens and the resort’s swimming and decorative pools. The villas, rooms and suites range in size from 165 square feet to 895 square feet. All the accommodations are light and airy and feature king-sized and/

or twin beds in the center of the bedroom, h a rd w o o d f i n i s h e s f ro m s u s t a i n a b l y cultivated forests and customized encaustic mosaic floor tiles, creating an atmosphere of old-world elegance. All the bathrooms in the villas, rooms and suites are adorned with grey slate stone tiling and feature deep-soaking tubs and separate rain showers. The villas’ bathrooms open to private gardens. The rooms’ and suites’ bathtubs in the Anam Collection can be partitioned from the rest of the interior space with folding, wooden doors. Every villa features terraces and/or balconies,

and 27 of the villas have their own private swimming pools. With five dining venues, the Anam does not lack for options. Its main restaurant, the Indochine, is located near the Anam’s openair lobby overlooking the East Sea. Rich wood accents and luxurious fittings and fixtures set the mood in a multi-level dining space that feels like a collection of intimate restaurants more than a single venue. Its terraces overlook one of the resort’s three swimming pools and are bathed in welcome slithers of sunlight by day and in the glow of lanterns and candles by night. At the Indochine, an extensive buffet breakfast includes popular Vietnamese, Asian and Western dishes, large spreads of pastries, breads and fruit, a live cooking station and freshly squeezed juices. Lunch is an a la carte affair with a delectable selection of contemporary Vietnamese, Asian and European cuisine. A Vietnamese set lunch menu is available on demand. The restaurant hosts buffet dinners to themes that change daily, featuring a range of experiences from seafood BBQ to Italian and Vietnamese. W ith a hotel this special, it’s easy to understand why it’s become an instant crowd-pleaser. From the stunning views, amiable staff, delicious food and a beach that is breathtaking, the Anam is the leader in luxury Vietnamese resorts. I suggest you book your room today! theanam.com

FUSION RESORT CAM RANH The Perfect Be ach Resort (And So Much More!) BY ANGELA NOELLE

V

ietnam has only, in the last decade, become a hot tourist destination. With that newness brings excellent opportunities for discovering new and exciting local destinations and hotel properties. One such location, Cam Ranh, was a fishing village in the not too distant past. Today, it hosts some of the most luxurious and exclusive properties in

78 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

all of Vietnam. One of the best is Fusion Resort Cam Ranh. Located on the south-central coast of the country, the property is about three years old and has introduced a new level of service and accommodation to the area. With its wellness concept, it has become one of the hottest booking in Vietnam. Once known for its US military base, Cam Ranh has come into its own as a tourist

destination. Luxury lodgings, natural beauty, pristine white-sand shores and a more relaxed vibe attract visitors after a beach vacation away from the usual haunts. The 72-suite-and-villa beachfront property is 34 acres in total and just ten minutes from the international airport (once an American military base). There’s complimentary shuttle service to town, but no one would blame you if you never wanted to step off this

stunning property. All rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV and a comfortable seating area. Most notable of all is the signature hanging bathtub in the bathroom. You can and should enjoy a soak with the herbal bath treatment—a rejuvenating mix of lemongrass, lime and other aromatic herbs. As you step inside your villa, you’ll notice how spacious and airy it is. A lovely breeze and sunlight are part of the decor, blending seamlessly into the wooden furnishings and soft white fabrics. For the best villas in the resort, book one with direct access to the beach, or one with the beach at your doorstep and a private pool. The best part: the villas can accommodate up to four people. The resort offers a private beach, several pools, a gym and a restaurant with a beach bar. In addition to the sleek, sophisticated contemporary design, and a setting so peaceful you’ll soon forget the outside world

even exists, Fusion has one feature that sets it apart from any other property in the area: it is an all-spa inclusive resort! It has recently revamped its spa menu, by introducing a packed schedule of healthy and healing activities ranging from anti-gravity yoga and yoga for children to daily meditation and Tai Chi sessions. Up to four types of yoga classes are now on offer per day. Local ingredients have found a place on the menu with options including a V ietnamese coffee scrub—a blend of brown sugar and coffee used to polish and moisturize dull skin (which is simply amazing and a must try)—and a pineapple smoothie wrap that uses fresh tropical fruit for cleansing and healing. More decadent food items in the line-up include caviar in an anti-ageing facial. More than 30 treatments are available at Maia Spa, including a range of herbal baths, facials, body wraps, eastern and western-style massages and reflexology and nail care.

Beyond the spa, the food at the hotel is magnificent. With one of the most interesting food concepts in the world, the hotel offers complimentary gourmet breakfast at any time and place. Guests can enjoy breakfast in the privacy of their own suite or villa, at the resort’s infinity pool or on the beach, any time of day. For dinner, feel the ocean breeze at their sheltered open-air dining restaurant with bay views. Here, they serve Vietnamese specialties and continental favorites. Whether a beach lover or a spa fanatic, there is something for everyone. W ith fantastic views, personable and professional service, large and open rooms, modern touches and excellent amenities, Fusion Cam Ranh is the place to be while in Vietnam. In a location that can’t be beat, this is a hotel that is sure to be the hardest booking for years to come! Trust me, go and you won’t be disappointed! fusionresortcamranh.com

SOFITEL LEGEND METROPOLE HANOI At the Top of its Game BY ALEXAND ER PANZELLA

O

ld-world mastery of details and elegance meets modern sophistication and convenience at this worldclass hotel, the best of H a n o i , S o f i t e l ’s L e g e n d Metropole Hanoi. Opened in 1901, this is one of the leading old colonial hotels of Southeast Asia. Far from resting on its revered name and central location, it has managed to move with the times and retain

80 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

its grandeur, combining modernity with oldschool glamor, in the heart of Hanoi’s former French Quarter. Hanoi is one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in all of Asia. It is often the start or end of a trip to Vietnam, and what a great welcome or farewell it is. Packed with charm, Hanoi has gone through enormous changes in the last decade, since Vietnam opened its doors to tourism, but the city retains all the characteristics, which make

it an amazing city to experience. As for the hotel, it is divided into two wings. The historic Metropole Wing was inspired by classic French architecture with a nod to local Vietnamese style. The more contemporary Opera Wing has been renovated to create a blend between the historic and modern elements of the hotel, and great care was taken to respect the rich heritage of the site while installing state-ofthe-art technology. New additions include

the Executive Floors and a Club Lounge. The hotel has 364 gorgeous rooms. The Metropole wing has 106 guestrooms and three Legendary Suites. The suites are named after famous residents and visitors to the hotel (Graham Greene, Charlie Chaplin and Somerset Maugham with private gardens) and have access to the Club Lounge. The Opera Wing offers 236 guestrooms (including 12 Premium Room Patios with a 2-square-meter terrace opening into a garden feature) and 18 suites, and one Grand Prestige Suite spanning 176 square meters. Each room in the Opera Wing has been individually furnished and decorated in a neoclassical style. The fifth, sixth and seventh floors, the Club Metropole Floors, are home to the Grand Premium Rooms, six Prestige Suites, and the Grand Prestige Suite, with exclusive luxuries and services such as a personal butler, afternoon tea and evening cocktails. Located in the center of the hotel, Le Spa du Metropole fits perfectly into its

environment, a pleasant 400-square-meter space overlooking the charming garden courtyard and pool. Each massage area is private, allowing guests to meditate, recharge and make the most of the spa experience. Using top products, such as Sisley, Clarins, Ytsara and Laurent Severac, Le Spa has diverse facilities: two themed spa suites for couples, six individual spa suites, one manicure and pedicure room, steam bath, sauna, showers, a relaxation room and a reception area. The Metropole restaurants and bars are all famous dining venues, each offering a different exotic experience: Le Beaulieu has the best French fare in Vietnam; Spices Garden offers the ultimate in Vietnamese gastronomy; Angelina, Italian Restaurant and Lounge, is the capital’s current hotspot; La Terrasse brings Parisian-style to the sidewalks of Hanoi; Le Club Bar treats guests to its famous chocolate buffet and cool jazz performances; and finally, Bamboo Bar brings poolside lounging to the next

level. Like the hotel, Le Beaulieu is more than 100 years old. Many have frequented t h i s re s t a u r a n t , i n c l u d i n g p o l i t i c i a n s , entrepreneurs, diplomats and war correspondents, like Graham Greene and Lucien Bodart. Directed today by Executive Chef Nicholas Shadbolt and Chef de Cuisine Olivier Genique, Le Beaulieu is especially known for its extravagant brunch as well as the live violin, which is the Sunday rendezvous for Hanoi. S o f i t e l L e g e n d M e t ro p o l e H a n o i i s beyond just the best hotel in Hanoi. It is an institution, and one that can’t be missed! From its luxurious rooms, personable and knowledgeable staff, fantastic dining and stunning luxury, the hotel is a world-class property tucked into the heart of the French Quarter of Hanoi. You’ll love everything about this property, and it’s the perfect launching pad for exploring this vibrant city. sofitel-legend-metropole-hanoi.com

PARADISE LUXURY CRUISES Sumptuousness at Sea BY ANGELA NOELLE

V

ietnam is a country of splendor. From its rich street culture, fragrant and flavorful food, to its stunning scenery, it is a destination that has only grown in popularity as a tourist hotspot in the last 10 years. One of the main attractions is the natural wonder of Ha Long Bay. Ha Long Bay, on the northeast coast

82 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

of Vietnam, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is teeming with massive limestone formations and is strikingly beautiful; basically, it is the perfect place to end a trip to Vietnam. The best place to experience the bay is to cruise on a junk boat. Paradise Luxury Cruises is the largest and most luxurious company working in Ha Long Bay. With four ships, each one more luxurious and outfitted than the next, it is the

go-to company in Ha Long Bay. They offer one- and two-night cruises. From its topnotch service, a tastefully decorated boat and excellent food, Paradise is the leader in client experience. Most guests arrive from Hanoi, which is a four-hour drive from the center of the city to the bay. The cruise line will gladly send a luxury van to collect you from your hotel in Hanoi, which gives you no excuse not to take this beautiful adventure!

Paradise Elegance

Mention should be made of their newest ship, Paradise Elegance. The 200-ton steel craft measures 61 meters long and 13 meters wide, making it the biggest overnight option in the UNESCO World Heritage site, ever. In addition to 31 high-design cabins that range from 250-350 square feet and include private balconies, walk-in closets, rain showers and floor-to-ceiling glass doors, Paradise Elegance features an array of upscale amenities, including an artfully sectioned dining room with piano bar and a spa with four treatment rooms. Once on board, you are briskly and efficiently shown to your cabin. Adorned with high-quality wooden and bamboo décor, air-conditioning and views to die for, the room is one of the attractions of the boat. But, you didn’t come here to spend time in your room. Lunch is served soon after arrival, and each guest can pick an activity of interest for after the meal. For example, you can

go kayaking, which is a fabulous way to get closer to the stunning rock formations and feel the breeze from the bay. Next, visit the Hang Sung Sot, which means “surprise cave.” The surprise of the cave is the fresh water pools inside, making it an excellent way to explore the hidden treasures of Vietnam. Later that evening, enjoy happy hour and watch a cooking demonstration. Savor the wonderfully authentic Vietnamese cuisine on board and watch the twinkling lights, both in the sky and onshore. Sit back and relax, confident in the knowledge that Paradise truly exemplifies the mystery and beauty of Ha Long Bay—stunning with much still to explore. In addition to the fantastic experience you can have on water, there is plenty to do on land. The company owns a fantastic restaurant in the heart of Hanoi called Home Restaurant. The fusion of old-world glamour and refinement meets moder n

sophistication at this stunning restaurant. Pairing the finest traditional Vietnamese food with inspired contemporary cuisine makes for a memorable evening. Located in one of Hanoi’s most desirable areas, Home Restaurant is within walking distance of lyrical lakes, traditional markets, charming parks and many of Hanoi’s most popular sites. Set within a former French residence, Home is a unique take on Vietnamese cooking. It is here you can try a crunchy salad full of flavor and the freshest of seafood grilled to perfection. The meat is tender and expertly marinated in pungent (in the best sense of the word) Vietnamese sauces and accompanied by fresh herbs, direct from their garden. Each of their wines is handpicked to best accompany the light nature of Vietnamese cooking. paradisecruise.com

LA RÉSIDENCE HUE HOTEL & SPA V ietnam’s Grande Dame BY ALEXAND RA PANZELLA

L

a Résidence in Hue, Vietnam, is one of the grande dames of the country and worthy of a trip to this magical city. The hotel was once a grand mansion built in 1930 as part of the former colonial governor’s residence. This architectural show-stopper overlooks Hue’s Perfume River, and it was restored and reopened in 2005 as a deluxe hotel. The city of Hué is steeped in history, from the days of the imperial court to the Vietnam War. La Résidence is perfectly located for getting around yet also perfectly secluded. The main sites are the Nguyen Tombs—a grand set of complexes of the Nguyen Dynasty kings, anchored by mausoleums within gardens, courtyards, pavilions, palaces and stela houses. Nearby sits the massive Citadel, an over-the-top interpretation of the dynastic capital in Beijing, as well as many pagodas, including

84 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

Tu Hieu. The hotel’s 200 meters of frontage sits along the south bank of the river with terraces, gardens and a wall of windows, o ff e r i n g s p l e n d i d v i e w s o f t h e c i t y ’s Flagtower Bastion, Citadel and the Trang Tien Bridge. The style cues of the hotel date back to its era of completion: art deco. The redesign honored that influence; the art deco design touches can be seen throughout the hotel. They’re found in the door frames of the reception hall and billiard room, the ceilings and doors of the restaurant, and in the indirect lighting and staircase banisters–all hallmarks of the art deco movement. In three connected buildings, the hotel’s 122 guest rooms and suites combine age-old charm and Asian opulence, with louvered shutters, hardwood floors and lofty ceilings. Each room features a private balcony or terrace with views of the river.

Rooms are decked in warm, vibrant colors with golden and chocolate brown tones. Signature suites feature four-poster beds and roomy claw-foot tubs. As for the offerings of the hotel, Le Parfum restaurant serves Mediterranean cuisine with a strong French accent. One of the highlights of the menu is the authentically Hue-style beef pho from the local side of the menu. The Le Gouveneur Bar is the physical and social heart of the hotel, with guests socializing and working over tea in the afternoon and over cocktails by night. The spa has a diverse menu that ranges from a rigorous Vietnamese massage with fire to facials with high-end products from the Italian line Comfort Zone. Near the garden, there’s a 30-meter saltwater swimming pool.

CATHAY PACIFIC Luxury in the Air BY ANGELA NOELLE

T

ravel has always been a passion of mine. I’ve been privileged enough to have traveled to over 50 countries, from Africa to Asia and of course, Europe. Nothing beats the thrill of experiencing some hidden part of a culture, a new food or a new sight. But truth be told, I detest the process of traveling; getting on a cramped plane makes me feel like a helpless sardine. That is why I counted my blessings when I booked my flight on Cathay Pacific’s new business class; this was going to be a comfortable ride! I was more than excited, and now the act of traveling could be pleasurable too! Cathay Pacific has one of the best reputations in the airline industry, thanks to spectacular service, a young fleet and excellent premium cabins. Plus, they recently refreshed their business-class cabins. This was enough of a reason to entice me!

86 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

My flight on the airline’s flagship 777300ER in business class was an amazing experience that made the long flight to Hong Kong (over 15 hours) totally worth it (I even wished the flight was longer!). From the moment I stepped up to the check-in counter to the moment I disembarked from the plane in Hong King, I was totally enthralled by Cathay Pacific’s professionalism. A bit of background is necessary if you are unfamiliar with this prestigious brand. The Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Group offers scheduled passenger and cargo services to over 200 destinations in Asia, North America, Australia, Europe and Africa, using a fleet of close to 200. Cathay Pacific is a founding member of Oneworld, the airline alliance. Member airlines include: Cathay Pacific, American Airlines, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LATAM Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airlines, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines and SriLankan

Airlines. These airlines serve more than 1,000 airports in over 150 countries. But back to the experience itself, suffice it to say, I wasn’t disappointed. Cathay’s seats are large, featuring innovative inflight entertainment (with a wide-range of large-release films), multi-point reclining seats that were easy to use and delicious food (which seemed as if it were prepared onboard). The freshness of the food cannot be understated, as the fish that was served seemed practically line-caught. I could go on and on, but know this: I found this business-class experience extremely enjoyable. From the staff, comfort of the seats, food and general atmosphere, you could tell great care was used to create a memorable flight. I’m very glad I had the opportunity to fly with Cathay Pacific. I urge you to book your flight today. You won’t be disappointed! cathaypacific.com/cx/en_US.html

n January 2017, the Dubner family, purchased Martin Viette Nursery situated on 42 acres of land at 6050 Northern Boulevard in Muttontown. The location is now the home of Heritage Farm & Garden. While it is a new and exciting venture for the Dubner Family, they have a long and proud history in the horticultural industry on Long Island. “We are as passionate about maintaining the horticultural heritage of Long Island as we are about providing the community with a welcoming atmosphere to enjoy and appreciate the beauty

of nature,” said founder Steven Dubner. In May he will be honored with the prestigious 2018 North Shore Land Alliance Golf and Tennis Outing Honoree for his many years being involved with environmental concerns, preservation of open space and promotion of horticulture on Long Island. He has preserved over 60 acres of land to remain as open space for agriculture on the East End of Long Island. Steve, as we are proudly told by his daughter, has donated gardens and landscapes at many Long Island Hospitals including Cohen’s Children’s Hospital and St Francis

Hospital. This is only a few examples of his involvement with local charities. Steven’s daughter Wendy Dubner Master adds, “Heritage Farm & Garden started out as a location we wanted to maintain because of its long tradition for providing horticulture materials and services to the community for over 87 years.” She goes on to say “My Father’s goal, and now my goal, is to maintain Heritage as a place where the public can go and find new plants to enhance their gardens. Of course they can continue to purchase all of their other garden essentials in this North Shore bucolic setting.” Local homeowners have also expressed

relief that instead of subdividing the property for homes, Heritage Farm & Garden will attempt to proudly continue the tradition at this special place where prior generations of parents and grandparents experienced a traditional garden center. Based on Long Island, Steven Dubner’s landscape company has been designing and building landscapes for our community for more than 50 years. During this period, the company is proud of its National, Regional and local awards for its superior landscape design and build projects. Steven’s daughter Wendy Dubner Master

was drawn to the garden industry through her childhood experiences observing her father’s projects as well as his love and enthusiasm for the entire field. She is excited about what Heritage Farm & Garden will mean to our community. “We wanted to maintain the tradition of what existed there for 87 years of being a horticultural center for people on Long Island to go to an iconic location showcasing a large selection of annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees and large scale specimen plant material that would not otherwise be readily available in the region. There will always be a large and unique assortment of decorative containers from all over the world. Inside the store, there are tropical plants, orchids, succulents, terrariums, and decorative containers, perfect for outdoor garden entertaining and hostess gifts for garden parties! Heritage Farm & Garden is also the perfect place to go for the perfect evergreen gift.” For Wendy, the president of Heritage Farm and Garden, it has become the

c h a l l e n g e t o c o n t i n u e t h e f a m i l y ’s horticultural traditions. After high school, Wendy enrolled at the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources with the intent to work as an environmental lawyer. While attending law school, Wendy founded a decorative pottery and planter distribution business that earned acclaim in prominent media publications such as Architectural Digest, Better Homes and Gardens as well as many others. After passing the bar exam, the allure of the green industry ultimately led her to grow her business working with the independent garden centers across the United States. She designed and sourced the line to reflect the latest trends in décor while maintaining selections with a classic, traditional flair. After selling her company to a competitor, Wendy continued to design and provide trend direction for garden

decor sold at Smith & Hawken, Henri Bendel, Saks Fifth Avenue, Target and other retailers. Wendy feels so fortunate to have the opportunity to design the Heritage garden center layout as well as define the unique product selection that is being offered at Heritage. “I am so excited about Heritage…it feels like I have the opportunity to use everything I have learned through the culmination of my experiences” One thing is for sure, that when it comes to running Heritage Farm and Garden, Wendy Dubner Master plans to maintain and grow this new family business the way her father always told her. “Live life by the golden rule. Treat people (customers, employees, vendors etc.) with the same level of respect that you expect from others. Always maintain the highest level of integrity when dealing with others and as often as possible, do it with a smile.” heritagefarmandgarden.com

GAREB SHAMUS B Y NI NA K ULLMANN

A

pioneer in the world of pop art, comic books, and the sports world, Gareb Shamus is the founder of the Wizard World and ToyFare empire, the owner of Comic Con festivals, and founder of the IFL which was broadcast on the Fox Networks. He is now pursuing his other passion in life as a contemporary artist. As the art world is on a constant quest for what’s new, Shamus has developed an original technique for his paintings that connects art with his audience. The creations exude vitality and positivity and portray his interpretation of life, casting a spell over everyone who is fortunate enough to view them in person. We paid a visit to Shamus at his West Chelsea gallery and wanted to know what inspires this enigmatic and successful entrepreneur turned artist and what is next on his agenda. Tell us about the inspiration and the mediums. How do you choose the mediums? I use acrylic paint and use individual drops of paint. All of my paintings have tens of thousands of drops on them. But, they are all very organized into really interesting patterns.

100 | MetMagNy.com MetMatNy.com | 25AMagazine.com | 25AMagazine.com

What do you visualize first? The patterns? The colors? GS: The technique that I have emanates out of my life. I had a very blessed life, a successful business, an amazing family and kids. I started Comic Con and I really helped bring superheroes to the forefront of pop culture and the media. But, because of that, people always wanted things from me, so I would keep people at a distance. When I came up with a technique for my paintings I wanted do something fun and engaging, and also allowed me to reach back out to people. That gave me the idea to have the paint extrude from the canvas. Once I developed that technique, each of my pieces tells a story. You have some paintings that are really abstract and you have some where you follow a specific pattern. What’s going through your mind when you’re doing each one? For me it starts with the story or the theme. In some cases I might say I want to fill my life with great people, great thoughts and great ideas, so I’ll make a white-on-white painting to create a pattern that shows growth. And then I think about what growth looks like, things that grow naturally, maybe trees. While talking about

my subject and realizing it, it literally just comes to me. Once I’ve figured that out, I mix the colors and prepare the canvas. The work is very meditative for me. My phone is off, my computer is down and I put some great music on. What’s the next project you are working on? I’m getting ready for Scope New York which is one of the largest art fairs in Manhattan. The show works with some of the best artists in the world and also with top emerging artists. They do an amazing job. I’m also working on setting up shows on a global level from New York to Munich to Tokyo to London to Brussels and Switzerland. It’s going to be a pretty exciting year. Were there any other artists that inspired you? I have lots of artists they inspire me in terms of what I’d be able to do as an artist. I think that it’s inspiring to see the details, the techniques, the mediums and the craft. I am also inspired by how they get their art and their message out into the world. So much of what I do is about connecting, and using art as a way to connect people.

Boris Johnson, Quentin Tarantino, Emir Kusturica, Patrick Swayze, Paco Rabanne, and Marwan Chatila. Alexey Klokov, a second generation artist, was born in 1965 in Russia. The impetus to navigate his own way in the world of art was attributable to his first teacher - the famous avant-garde artist of 20th century Anatoly Zverev. Certified in 1991 as an artist and art restorer by the Saint Petersburg Higher School of Art and Industry, Alexey worked in the restoration workshops of the Hermitage (Saint Petersburg) and Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow). As he was literally “in touch” with the masterpieces of the world’s great artists including Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso and others, Alexey created the opportunity to learn from them “without words”. In 1994 Alexey Klokov took residence in a monastery devoting himself to icon-painting. There he explored the secrets of gilding and the great power of symbolism embodied in the image. After four years of consistent work he achieved the confidence to embark on his own artistic career. The theme of his first exhibition in 1998 in Moscow was an expression of his monastery experience. His special guest of honor, designer Paco Rabanne, deeply connected with the spirituality of Alexey’s artworks and

purchased the first two pieces for his collection. Since then the artist’s paintings have been widely exhibited throughout Russia and abroad including the USA, Japan, the UK and Austria. The arrival of his exclusive agent and wife Naira Velumyan to Canada has introduced North American audience to his new collection of enamel on linen paintings named “Suggestive Abstract”. The art embodies an uniqueness that is simultaneously suggestive and subliminal, and reveals many shapes and forms of meaning, which is subject to a personal interpretation. alexklokov.com

PRINTING FASHION’S FUTURE P HOT O G R APHE R & AUTHO R : PAUL PE LAK

T

he streets of the city and the face of the model may be familiar, but these futuristic fashions are probably not. Created with 3-D printing in polymer by fashion designer Sylvia Heisel, they reveal her belief in technology’s power to transform fashion. Technology can now scan our bodies and match our outfits to our individual measurements and tastes. Tech can free us from standard sizes and from designs based on flat pieces of fabric, joined by seams. It can let seams be omitted, or placed anywhere. The work of dressmakers and tailors can be done during a garment’s creation. Ms. Heisel’s custom 3-D printed clothing, matched to your unique size, shape, and taste – in fit, style, color, texture – exponentially expands your ability to design your personal style. On-site retailers that adopt this technology could offer on-demand, custom clothing. Their alternative could be the fate of Kodak, which went bankrupt after trying to resist the shift from film to digital photography. Embracing change could help fashion retailers emulate Apple, which strives to meet needs that customers do not yet know they have. Ms. Heisel’s raw materials are sustainably sourced and biodegradable. Her vision, intellect, and heart are enriching fashion and the world. MINA DEUTSCH Look and Feel Brilliant B Y CHR I STO PHE R A. PAPE

In this age of extravagant luxury, nothing says wealth, power and taste like a fine piece of jewelry. It is one of the few last truly luxury purchases a person can make in their life and for many the jewel that captures the heart is the pearl. For thousands of years, it was the pearl that reigned supreme. It’s not surprising, then, that cities were called the “Pearl of the Orient” or the “Pearl of the Mediterranean.” That’s why it’s so important that Mina D Jewelry is in business and thriving. Launched in December of 2010, the collection is comprised of natural materials—pearls, stones, sterling silver and vermeil and everything is sourced locally. Each piece is unique and one-ofa-kind, all designed by Mina herself and manufactured by master craftsmen in New York City. The classic collections are based on color. “I design for the woman who knows what she likes and isn’t afraid to make a statement,” Deutsch says. “My clients get

a thrill collecting and wearing works of art.” Her inspiration originated not only from the fashion that comes down the runway each season, but also from her love of travel, especially the ocean and beaches, the muse behind her Ocean Dreams and Calming Blue Collections. Mina D Jewelry collections are wearable and transition year-round, it all comes to your own personal style. The luxury collections are equally stylish at the office or after hours. You can wear one of the multi statement necklaces to the office with a simple shift dress, then add a great pair of earrings, and the transition from work to dinner or event is seamless. The same necklace can easily be worn on the weekend, for your casual outfit to look polished and pulled together. Another great look is a handful of stretch bracelets and or the multi row bracelets from the lines signature collection. We also love the look of exquisite long dangling earrings when you want to take the focus away

from the neckline of your dress. For Metropolitan’s April issue, Mina styled the jewelry, along with cover star, Jill Dobson. At Jill’s gorgeous apartment on the Upper West Side, they matched stunning, shimmering gowns with simple pieces from the Mina D Jewelry Signature Collection. Mina paired Jill’s pretty spring floral dress with her Statement Necklace from her Playful Pink Mina D Jewelry Collection. Her simple grey dress got a little pizzazz with her Druzy Necklace from her Chains of Love Collection, and her Vintage Dior Gown went perfectly with the Starburst Pave Necklace from the Signature Collection. As a designer regularly showcased on CBS’s The Price Is Right, Mina D Jewelry can be seen featured in this month’s April 9th episode. 917.969.5527 info@minadjewelry.com minadjewelry.com

INTIMATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE FACIAL ANATOMY Joel E. Kopelman, MD FACS, Park Avenue Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgeon B Y ADAM K LUG E R

J

oel E. Kopelman, MD FACS, P a r k Av e n u e O c u l o - F a c i a l Plastic Surgeon takes a comprehensive look at why you should always choose an expert when deciding to get cosmetic fillers. According to Dr. Joel Kopelman, facial fillers are amongst the most pervasive cosmetic procedures in the world. They have gained this popularity because in most cases they are safe, they can help to restore facial balance and symmetry and the improvement is seen immediately with little or no downtime. “A number of non-invasive or short recovery procedures are increasingly more popular ... people do not want to have long recuperations. Injectables have become very popular in terms of cosmetic procedures that are done around the world because #1 they are safe. They’re fast. There are very few risks and virtually no recovery time...and

108 | MetMagNy.com | 25AMagazine.com

there can be some very dramatic results, dramatic improvements...” Dr. Joel Kopelman says that facial hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero have many cosmetic uses. They can treat “laugh” lines around your mouth, forehead lines, under eye dark circles, hollow upper eyelids, sunken cheeks, and temples, poorly defined jaw lines, and can straighten the contour of your nose. In most cases, the treatments are associated with minimal risks provided the injector has experience and takes the appropriate precautions. However, just like any other medical procedure, experience counts! As one of the first physicians in the United States to uses fillers to restore facial volume, Dr. Kopelman has many years of experience and has perfected the techniques that consistently produces natural looking results. “the average person coming to me is about 4555 usually female but we are seeing increasing numbers of men who also want to look more competitive in the world or just want to look better... I have a number of gay men who are my patients as well who feel that after they are 30 they lose some confidence in themselves so I consider what I do in this world to be very important for them too. I worked in Beverly Hills, I did a fellowship at UCLA -- the year I spent at UCLA on my fellowship we operated on many movie stars and clients but I’m not willing to drop names of people in terms of using them and exploiting them. Every patient in front of me is extremely important, everybody is on equal footing whether you are rich or poor I treat everyone the same. I treat every patient with great attention and care-I try to look at them and be very honest with them and not try to exploit them in any way --and just say “this is what you need --don’t overdo it... be realistic about what we should do here...take baby steps and not major steps and then when you digest what you have done, then you can decide if you want to go any further in the future.” Not All Injectors Deliver the Same High Quality Results

“I have two aspects of my practice one is reconstructive and one is what I call truly cosmetic or aesthetic and the aesthetic side I think it gives people renewed confidence in their social interactions and I think it makes them feel good and basically I think that is the essence of what doing cosmetic surgery is about...giving greater happiness to a person in terms of their interaction with the world at large. The reconstructive side is also critically important --if I can put somebody back together -if they had cancer or I remove a cancer and I’m talking about skin cancers now and I can piece back their face their body in such a way that they have minimal residual evidence of that defect then I feel like I gave the patient a lot of hope and it’s very important to restore their function and that’s certainly one of the critical things that I do.... Sometimes I make improvements in their ability to see as well. like for instance when I elevate their eyelids their field of vision improves. There’s a lot of things that I do that have to do with the eyelids , I’m an eyelid specialist I’m an ocular plastic surgeon.” Because fillers are offered on virtually ever y corner of New York City is there really a difference between one injector and another? When you visit Dr. Joel Kopelman, you are coming to an “expert” injector who has acquired these skills not only as a oculofacial plastic surgeon with more than thirty years of experience but as an injector with highly developed aesthetic sensibilities and unparalleled visual acuity, who has intimate knowledge of the facial and eyelid anatomy, and who has been injecting hyaluronic acid gels for more than twenty years. “I was always interested in art and I was interested in science so I obviously became a Doctor first...and then I eventually moved into the field that matched my personality...There are artistic sensibilities that you have to bring to surgery when you do cosmetic surgery... It’s like a person who hears music and can understand the music on a deeper level and I think when I look at things in art I have a very acute visual eye. I think that my ability to critique a face in terms of symmetry and the way that someone

looks and how I can help them, it has a lot to do with my ability, my visual acuity. The sharpness of my assessment has a lot to do with my aesthetic sensibility.” Dr. Joel Kopelman also has the knowledge and critical eye to know which product is best suited to treat the eyelid or other parts of the face. There are specific injectables that are designed to treat specific problems. Choosing the right one can make all the difference. For example some products, like Juvederm, create too much swelling when injected under the eyes and therefore are not suited to treat deep dark under eye circles. Restylane is a better choice. Other products (like Voluma) produce more of a lifting effect and therefore are a better choice to lift the cheeks. Furthermore, Dr. Kopelman knows what level the injection must be placed to obtain the best result without precipitating unwanted side-effects. He will recommend the precise volume you need to replace lost volume and nothing more. Injecting too many vials of Juvederm or Restylane will produce exaggerated unnatural results. “Sometimes I have to modulate the patient’s expectations if they have unrealistic expectations I have to tell them that what they are asking for is not possible. I’m very honest...very, very honest... and I do very precise work and I’m a greater critic of my work than anyone else so if I see something isn’t just perfect I’m not satisfied, I can’t sleep till it is done to my level of expectations. I think I’m a perfectionist yes. I’m a perfectionist...and I’m very exacting about what I do and what I expect and my expectations are higher than the patient’s expectations most of the time.” D r. J o e l K o p e l m a n ’s u l t i m a t e g o a l i s to rejuvenate a patient’s appearance by eliminating facial folds and creases and restoring lost volume to the cheeks, lips, and jaw line. “The trend has been that people forestall major surger y basically with the use of injectables treatments like restalyne, uviderm, botox and so forth... In some instances, injections alone won’t

do the trick you really do need to have surgery or restorative, beautiful contours. That’s where things have been going. There have been greater and greater attempts by laser companies to have devices that give you shorter recovery and that’s understandable because everybody wants to get back to their social or professional lives. However, some of these short term fixes are just what they are- they are short term fixes - they are not longlasting in terms of the kinds of results you get with surgery but with surgery there has to be some recovery time.” Dr. Joel Kopelman Expert Eyelid & Facial Injector In New York City. Although fillers are very common, they must be injected by an expert. Over 2 million people in the United States have had a hyaluronic acid filler injections. With this increased popularity, more and more physicians and nurses are starting to offer filler injections. However, this does not guarantee that everyone who is injecting filler is truly qualified to be doing so, especially in the eyelid area. When looking for a physician to inject filler either for under eye circles, hollow upper eyelids or hollow temples, it is very important to find an oculoplastic surgeon who has extensive knowledge of the eyelid structures and anatomy and years of experience to ensure a patient’s safety. “Some people will say oh you should do a facelift, a brow lift and your eyes and do a chin implant have your breasts elevated and do breast implants and liposuction all in one day-- and that type of thing just ends up to be a big mess --because... if you do pieces of the puzzle ..you end up with better results rather than try to do everything at once. It’s like cooking if you have too many pots on the stove then something’s going to blow over or something is not going to come out right-- if you have one item that you are cooking, you are much more likely to get a better result because you have the focus on that one particular thing. So I don’t believe in doing too many things in one day...” In addition Dr. Joel Kopelman, goes even

further to keep all his patients safe. He injects fillers using blunt tipped micro-cannulas rather than sharp needles, particularly around the upper and lower eyelids. Blunt micro-cannulas minimize the chance that a blood vessel will be penetrated which reduces the incidence of bruising or other complications. By using micro-cannulas, Dr. Kopelman can reach many areas through one or two entry points which allows him to strategically place the filler at the right depth and minimize side-effects. Dr. Joel Kopelman, MD FACS, Park Avenue Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgeon’s Four Key Take Away Points to consider before you choose the right injector: 1. Cannulas are blunt tipped “needles that cause less bruising and because the blunt tip doesn’t penetrate blood vessels easily it is a safer option when you are injected near your eyes. 2. Cannulas also have the advantage that they can deliver the filler through a single port and this reduces the number of skin punctures which reduces bruising. There is a learning curve when using microcannulas, so make sure your injector is wellexperienced in using one. 3. When the cannula is used one entry site is usually sufficient to deliver the filler to many locations. With the needle, this is less so, and multiple sticks are needed, which is more traumatic and likely to lead to more bruising. 4. Choose an expert injector with years of experience who knows which product best fits your particular problem, an in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and knows how to correct complications should they occur. The pursuit of excellence in medicine has been both a professional and personal, lifelong, family commitment for Dr. Joel and the Kopelman family. “I have a son and daughter who are both in medical school ...I think medicine is the greatest profession of all...I consider it to be the highest profession...”when my family is happy I’m happy ...I get great satisfaction from both my family we spend a lot of time together and then I also get a lot of gratification as a doctor... so I have a good balance.” Dr. Joel Kopelman, MD FACS, Park Avenue Oculo-Facial Plastic Surgeon can be reached at: Joel E. THE GERALDO SHOW: A MEMOIR Iconic Broadcaster Geraldo Rivera Releases New Book BY ELIZABETH D AR WEN

T

he Geraldo Show: A Memoir is a heartfelt, eyeopening autobiography of iconic broadcaster and author, Geraldo Rivera’s extraordinary life and times, recounts his award-winning, action-packed, emotionally charged and controversial 48-years in the news business. The book covers his farflung adventures in war and peace, his triumphant 15-year long shot marriage to wife and partner Erica, and his wild bunch of family and eclectic friends who range from conservative commentator Sean Hannity to stoner comic Cheech Marin to Donald J. Trump, the forty-fifth President of the United States. The book includes a sympathetic, but not sycophantic portrait of the president. Both native New Yorkers, the two friends have known each other for decades through various phases of life in the big city. They speak frequently and Geraldo explains his choice following the 2016 election to back the president, whenever ethically and honorably possible. The book tells how Geraldo’s support of the polarizing president has cost friendships and caused tension, even within Geraldo’s own family. Erica, like a majority of American women, opposes the president’s policies and Geraldo describes their friction common these days in millions of similarly divided American households. In the wake of the devastating 9/11 attacks, Geraldo tells how he left “Rivera Live”, his top-rated show on CNBC, to join Fox News and the hunt for Osama bin Laden. Geraldo brings the reader inside his decade-long, obsessive pursuit of the terror mastermind from bin Laden’s Tora Bora Afghanistan hideout to the day almost ten years later in May 2011 when he was killed by our Navy SEALS,

exhilarating news Geraldo broke to the American people. The Geraldo Show: A Memoir also tells the melancholy story of the downfall of Roger Ailes, his friend and mentor, and of other powerful men like reigning anchors Bill O’Reilly and Matt Lauer, and it explores the role played by several strong women, including Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly, in making history in the painful process. The book also describes the inevitable toll of age, and of a hard life, well lived. The Geraldo Show is vivid history, told from the inside out.

THE WAY BACK A Chronical of a Single Mom’s Jour ney Back to Wellness and Success BY LYNN RAD ICE

T

aking chances is something that came so natural to me. Hiking, zip lining, trapeze, scuba diving, and fearlessly trying new things defined me. Now I am very cautious, this at times, still feels unnatural to me. Living in NYC with the love of my life, a full workload, traveling the world, and placing candidates in my executive search firm, I knew where I was headed. Then I boarded Amtrak 188 and the TERROR BY RAIL began. I remember being seized by blackness, but it’s the sound — not the image — that lives on in my memory: a chugging drum fire of turning wheels, the dramatic sound of the wind tunnel, and the fear of dying. If I close my eyes to imagine it, I can still see the smoke-filled car, the luggage all over my body, as I woke up on

my back, with my arms crossed over my face, thinking I had no teeth. The immense pain of my broken shoulder blade, neck and back, and bruises on every part of my body and face from being thrown at the luggage rack at 106 mph. Hitting my head so hard, I would go bald in the next few months from the trauma, needing a hairpiece in the back. The adrenaline-filled intense fight or flight moment in the dark when I realized I was sealed in a metal box with no way out, is something I relive daily. The doors were sealed. In total darkness, smoke, and soot no one knows how to open a train door, or window. We were flipped. The windows are high above us, and the seats, with nothing to grab on to, are hanging down. There is nothing lighting up the exits or windows or doors, like in a plane. I was breathing faster, in tears, and I needed to get out. I remember climbing the seats with a man holding me from below with my broken shoulder blade. There is a piece of rubber to remove around the window, which took a while for me to figure out. I did a push up then a pull up with a broken shoulder to get to the top of the train, in pain. As I pulled myself on top of the train, I finally thought I may have a chance to live. I looked over to my side and there were 5 tanker cars of oil. People on the hill screamed: “The Train Is On Fire!” Panic sets in once again. W ith each interview I have tearfully conducted, I sought to understand how these great rolling machines had destroyed the person I used to be and killed the person I cared about most ~ Lynn Radice It is in moments like this that your character is defined. A single mom too injured to care for her children and herself, trust broken, spirit broken, body broken. I was made to seek refuge. Leaving behind my home I had previously known, my business, clients, and lifestyle that I had been so very sure of and grateful for. My inner mental well being under attack by PTSD. My finances once secure, now debt. My peace, faith, and security all to be recovered, and still

recovering this day. I am here for a greater purpose. In life, you are only as strong as your greatest fight back. I’m happy to report that this single mom, businesswoman, author, and philanthropist is finding the light at the end of the tunnel. My greatest gift is this, I can connect others who have lost it all. I have co-founded a global foundation: STARZ foundation here in Boca Raton, FL. An inspiring foundation that is all about second chances. Starz Women will mentor women of every age, providing scholarships, wellness programs, friendships, internships, potential funding and new careers if possible. Our expert coaches will challenge our members and provide expert advice on all topics. Starz women are big-hearted philanthropists. Stars mission is to empower women and children to shine in everyday life by providing: advocacy, mentoring, education, resources, and safe housing through our network of caring partners. There are 5 points around every star. Starz foundation will help women and children thrive in all aspects of life: Business, Emotional, Family, Spiritual, and Wellness. I have found my passion and purpose. We a re l o o k i n g f o r n e w m e m b e r s , volunteers, and sponsors. I wish I had a moral to tie up my story, a mantra to live under. Some inspirational quip about survival. I’ve rotated through encouraging messages, but over time the meaning evaporates into a dishonest quote. You gain wisdom and lose it again, even if you write it down. But after a number of years, you can attain a clear picture of the person you used to be and realize you’ve moved forward.

COUTURE DESIGNER: JACKIE ROGERS Be Fashionable All Year-Round BY ELIZABETH D AR WEN

J

ackie Rogers holds the unique distinction of being possibly the only living fashion designer who personally learned from fashion icon Coco Chanel and remains actively engaged in the craft of designing and producing couture fashions. Jackie has for many seasons continued to inspire with her collections which feature bold designs and unexpected fabric selections. Many of Rogers’ collections are influenced by her friendships with some of the world’s most well-known people and her time spent in some of the most fascinating cities in the world. Rogers has lived a life full of inspiration – from big-band singer to Hollywood starlet, denizen of Rome’s Pleated Caftan

la dolce vita in the company of princes and magnates, a muse for Federico Fellini, Coco Chanel’s favored mannequin, and a successful New York model. The makers of HBO’s recent 2017 documentary on the life of Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli turned to Jackie as one of the tastemakers from that period and for her insights into the lifestyle and the man. Jackie Rogers has dressed some of the most recognized women in entertainment, politics and finance, and her prestigious client list includes icons including Jackie Onassis. In terms of her design credo Jackie utilizes materials other designers steer away from to create unique, timeless fashions. From blouses to pants to beautiful gowns, each piece is handcrafted in the New York showroom to ensure the highest standard of quality. When you enter a room, the beauty and craftsmanship of a signature Jackie Rogers design is unmistakable as Jackie still uses sewing techniques she perfected while originally working with Coco Chanel at the latter’s Paris atelier. It is her zest for both life and the experiences it offers that gives Jackie Rogers her extraordinarily sophisticated point of view, which translates into designs that make a statement of sophistication and style with every piece being impeccably tailored. The signature Jackie Rogers garment is the burlap jacket, which Jackie tailors to the body, creating beautifully structured designs. These often feature a perfectly paired color-duo, imparting to the wearer a striking, bold and modern look. Some of the most extraordinary experiences on Roger’s personal resume which have informed her fasion designs includes her past as a runway model for the most renowned couturiers of Rome, including Simonetta and Fabiani, and her role in Fellini’s cult classic film 8 ½ where she starred against Marcello Mastroianni. However most impressive of all is probably

her time working at the House of Chanel, where she absorbed the immaculate style and techniques of her mentor. Said Rogers, “It was the greatest experience of my life. I never realized what an effect she [Coco Chanel] had on me.” The effect was to prove lasting, and Rogers devoted her life to being a fashion designer on her return to New York. Rogers is often referred to as “America’s Coco Chanel,” and she likes to point out that, “I do not believe in fashion, I believe in style,” and this motto is reflected throughout her collections, which are made with the timeless elegance that is the signature of the Jackie Rogers brand. jackierogers.com

ooking to stimulate your scalp, detangle your hair and blow dry simultaneously? Then the Flex Brush is your perfect brush! The Flex Brush bends to follow the contours of your head, massaging your scalp and stimulating the production of natural oils. This, in turn, promotes hair growth, reduces static and helps prevent breakage. Because the Flex Brush has vents that allow heat to pass through it, blow drying won’t damage it. Detangle Safely: The Flex Brush is especially great for detangling children’s hair. Unlike traditional brushes, it flexes to avoid snagging on tough knots, so there’s no pain, plus you get damage-free detangling on all hair types, whether hair is wet or dry. The Flex Brush is made from natural rubber; the coating has a soft- touch finish that’s comfortable and easy to grip. Massage and Stimulate Hair Growth: Its flexibility allows the Flex Brush to perfectly follow the contours of your scalp, resulting in a soothing massage that increases the blood supply to your hair’s follicles. Increased circulation helps increase the flow

Air can pass freely through the integrated vents, resulting in much faster drying times. The Most Versatile Brush on the Market: No matter if your hair is curly or straight, dry or wet, the Flex Brush bends to follow to the curvature of your head, detangling knotted hair. It provides the perfect amount o f p re s s u re a n d stimulation to avoid hurting your scalp or “tearing” your hair like ridged brushes can. Whether your hair is curly, fine and delicate or thick—or if you have extensions or a sensitive scalp—

the Flex Brush is your go-to hair tool. The Flex Brush is the creation of two of the most innovative minds in beauty: Celebrity Hair Stylist and owner of the elite salon Angelo David Salon in New York City, Angelo David, and Jacob Guttman, founder and CEO of Creative Pro Hair Tools. While on the beach in Aruba, Angelo was pained by watching people destroy their hair as they yanked rigid brushes through knots, tearing ends and destroying roots. He contacted Jacob and together they designed The Flex Brush—an all-purpose tool that detangles safely, massages the scalp and promotes hair health and growth. The Flex Brush comes in three variations: The Flex Brush XL Nylon Bristle, The Flex Brush Petite Mixed Bristle and The Flex Brush XL Mixed Bristle. SRP is $20 for the smaller size and $26 for the larger brush. theflexbrush.com Follow Flex Brush on social media: Faceboook: theflexbrush Twitter:@theflexbrush
