ach issue I want to bring to you experiences both bold and benign, luxe and leisure, for longtime residents and transplants alike. South Florida has much to offer, and I want to be your personal guide. Follow me as we begin this journey together because if you haven’t, you should... Take an 8-hour vacation at the 1 Hotel in South Beach or luxuriate in the spa and stay overnight. A short escape down to Miami, a true life and sanity saver, whether it be a shopping spree in Bal Harbor and a tea at The Surfside (The Four Seasons) then back home in time for a dinner with family. The need to break away is so important for our mental health as much as physical one spot in particular that gets me into 3rd gear right away is 1 Hotel South Beach. Typically I valet and cruise through the lobby with my oatmilk latte from Neighbors Cafe. I pop into Violet and Grace a boutique filled with trendy options, my last pick was a tan leather mini dress from Iro, love thier beach chic vibe. Habitat is a farm to table Mexican restaurant off the lobby that I must try one day, but everytime I head to 1 Hotel im drawn to Watr. Thier dropdead gorgoeus rooftop lounge

Watr is the place to be in South Beach to people watch, you can choose to sit at the bar and focus on meeting new people, sit poolside with models, or relax on the luxe sofas all while staring at the water far below. - no doubt Watr’s namesake. If seeing and being seen doesn’t strike your fancy then head to Wave 1 Hotel’s private restaurant on the beach open Friday Saturday and Sunday. When wining an dining just isn’t enough to put you in the full destressed mode head down to Bramford Wellness Spa, recently voted Florida’s best hotel spa. I get the Natura Bisse Diamond Facial which uses real diamonds to refine fine lines and wrinkles - no doubt a result of stress. Stress that will melt away with the Bramford Signature Treatment. If - if, you find yourself so relaxed you need to stay the night, I recommend the Retreat Collection or their Sky Penthouse for a true ultimate luxury escape. Same day or next day, valet card in hand, I am refreshed and back in the car for my easy drive back to Jupiter - no airplanes or Security lines. #MargaretLuceTip

The Hidden Gem of Carmel Valley Bernardus Lodge and Spa By Karina Y. Sotelo

E

nsconced in the heart of Monterey County’s beautiful Carmel Valley, Bernardus Lodge and Spa is an intimate and luxurious countryside retreat that embodies the quintessential wine country escape. The prized winemaking estate is set among 28-acres of serene verdant gardens, groves, orchards and boundless rolling hills of lush grapevines that effortlessly meld into the breathtaking Santa Lucia mountains in the distance. Designed to exist in perfect harmony with nature and resound its peaceful surrounds, the 73room property emanates sophistication and relaxation in its contemporary California ranch-style layout and Mediterranean influence and flair. Sun-soaked ochres, creamy toffees, and rich terracottas wash the entire exterior, exquisitely complimented by traditional Italian stonework. The interior combines the simplistic characteristics of oldworld Tuscan charm and accessorized with sumptuous new-world comforts: exposed stone walls, vaulted ceilings with dark stained

wooden beams, French patio doors and oak floors, adorned with rustic-chic wooden furnishings, custom antique-style accent rugs, and opulent crystal chandeliers. There are a myriad of activities and indulgences found on the premises, including an elegant farm-to-table restaurant with an exclusive chef’s table, an indoor and outdoor bar, a wine cellar, a decadent spa, heated pools, and tennis, bocce, croquet lawns and courts. But, perhaps the most romantic feature about this resort is its garden, a whisperquiet sanctuary where countless brides and grooms have recited their vows amid twoacres of fragrant roses and sweet lavender, organic herbs, seasonal vegetables, edible plants, and splendid water fountains. The garden is also an apiary to hundreds of thousands honey-producing bees that create the purest ingredients for the kitchen, bar and the spa. THE ACCOMMODATIONS Inspired by the colors and elements of nature, the property exhibits sheer luxury and countryside living in a collection of single and two-story rooms, suites and villas. The 73-guestrooms are spacious and lavishly

styled in rustic and eclectic décor, uniquely appointed with high-end conveniences including fireplaces, dining tables, cozy chairs and sofas, a bar thoughtfully curated with select Bernardus wines, indulgent twoperson soaking tubs, and ultra-comfortable king-size featherbeds with fluffed pillows and high-thread count Italian linens. Single and two-story premium rooms have sizable balconies and patios with wonderful views of the pastoral scenery. Suites and villas are sophisticated and extravagant in every sense, but there is an intimate and relaxing vibe that manifests throughout these refined accommodations. Each space is classically designed in an inviting earth-toned palette with punctuations of elegant purples and rich plums that echo the beautiful hues of lavender and grapes from the outside gardens and vineyards. Notable features include: an airy, commodious living room that is wealthily furnished in weathered wood grain textures, layered patterns and custom fabrics, sparkling crown-shaped chandeliers, a mirrored wet bar with glass shelves and a pair of creamcolored French doors that brighten the entire room and open-wide to patios, terraces or balconies bedecked in a combination of September 2021

shaded dining tables, pillowed rattan lounging chairs, hanging cocoon hammocks, firepits or fireplaces, and the most jaw-dropping and otherworldly panoramic displays of the rolling hills beyond. Bedrooms are separate from the living room and are minimally outfitted with warming fireplaces, dressers and regal midcentury-inspired canopied beds. However, the most sumptuous amenity in the suites and villas, is the master bathrooms. These ultra-calming and grandiose wet rooms encourage guests to go bare and completely succumb to relaxation; showcasing naturalfibers, wooden and brassy accents, ribbedglass walls, a multi-jetted rainfall shower and glossy jade-hued handmade wall tile that accentuates the oversized hammered copper tub centerpiece. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors slide open to an alfresco shower where guests can quite literally bathe in nature. The outdoor shower is enclosed by a cedar slatted fence with climbing vines and vibrant-green foliage, giving guests ultimate privacy while lathering under a balmy breeze and sunny blue sky. The bathroom is finished with plush robes, exfoliating products, and handmade aromatherapeutic lavender soap-bars and eucalyptus mint-scented bath gels that spiritually transport guests to the spa. Here, with all the indulgent sensibilities thinkable, guests will find all the reasons not to ever leave the comfort of their peaceful abode. THE FOOD & DRINK An authentic epicurean destination that goes beyond the typical wine-sipping and charcuterie and cheese pairings, the culinary artistry at Bernardus Lodge and Spa offers a proper garden-to-table and 26

vine-to-glass experience. The multi-awardwinning restaurant and bar, Lucia—named after the picturesque mountain range that it overlooks—captures the distinctive flavors and essences of California’s central coast, in both an alfresco and private-room fine dining atmosphere. The kitchen is at the direction of world-renowned culinary genius, Chef Cal Stamenov, whose creativity and talents has imagined delectable seasonal menus and country-style cuisine focused on sustainable methods and techniques, incorporating freshly handpicked organic ingredients, most of which are cultivated and harvested from the house garden and vineyards, or mindfully sourced from local purveyors. Following the changing patterns and rhythms of the natural seasons, Chef Cal and his team are constantly updating and revolutionizing their recipes and plates to reflect the region’s rich bounty. This summer, a new Colors of the Season menu was introduced that caters to a more health-conscious and plant-based lifestyle. Highlighted starter items include a tasty roll of crunchy red striped beets, fresh cilantro, velvety avocado, olives and spicy hummus wrapped in a thin translucent pastry sheet of rice. Other savory courses embrace traditional components of Mediterranean summer entrées but have Chef Cal’s unique innovative touch, like the green gazpacho that blends avocado, celery, padrón peppers, and leafy greens in a chilled creamy soup, as well as the baked ratatouille with marble potatoes, rosemary, olives, and homemade spaghetti. High quality pasture-raised meats, poultry and wild fresh-caught seafood are also available on a separate menu. And, of

25A Metropolitan Magazine Palm Beach | Metmagny.com

course, desserts. There is a glorious list of delicious seasonal confections, ranging from refreshing strawberry sorbets, to decadent chocolate cakes and specialty goatcheese cheesecakes. Indulge in any of the homemade ice creams, the pistachio flavor is hands-down the most rich, aromatic and silky-smooth frozen treat imaginable. Guests that crave a more personalized multicourse gastronomic encounter, can reserve a private table at the resort’s countless unique dining options. The chef’s table—a fiveperson nook-style dining accommodation that is secretly tucked away in the heart of the kitchen—gives front row access to impressive behind the scenes artistic culinary performances. Here, Chef Cal and his staff of brilliant culinarians, will provide a variety of dishes that are tailored to satisfy the palate and match guests wine preferences (the chef’s table has been frequented by many gastronomes and celebrities alike, including Julia Child, Clint Eastwood and Leonardo DiCaprio). Not only does the wine cellar bottle an impressive collection of wines (25,000 to be exact), but it is the perfect place for wine lovers and connoisseurs to swirl, smell and sip in a bespoke dining concept. At the cellar, 12-guests will go on a sensational four to six-course journey, pairing the complex characteristics of particular wines, handselected from the cellar, to the distinguished aromas, textures and flavors of seasonal fare specially made by the kitchen. A Chef’s Tasting Menu can be enjoyed at the resort’s ultra-luxe and intimate seven-foot round table in the Magnum Room, where 16 discerning guests can open their senses to Chef Cal’s

ingenuity in an exhibition of his most savory and exquisite signature plates. Aside from upscale dining, Lucia proposes hedonistic food and drink experiences in a laid-back ambiance, too. Guests can relish in an open-air lunch or dinner among luscious green lawns, flower wrapped arbors and pergolas, and a dramatic mountainside as the backdrop. For casual sipping, the restaurant’s lobby bar provides an extensive list of house-made pinot noir, red blend varietals, chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, along with small plates. Though most known for its house wines, the bar is also one of the valley’s most popular destinations for unique mixology experiences. Handcrafted cocktails are infused with fresh garden produce, herbs, botanicals, and sweet honey and nectar that is organically extracted from the hives of the on-site wild honeybees. There are dozens of potent drinks to choose from, but the most creative and thirst-quenching is the Butterfly Potion—a lemon gin-based elixir that is served like a magical potion, combining ginger liqueur, pure honey-syrup, and a purple

concoction made up of lavender bitters and butterfly-pea flower tea—it is so delicious and spellbinding that you will be tempted to have more than one. THE SERVICES & AMENITIES Ultimate relaxation and high-style pamperings begin the moment guests arrive the property. A friendly and distinguished staff welcomes each and every guest with a generous glass of Bernardus sauvignon blanc or a mintedlemonade refreshment that sets them into full vacation mode before they even witness the abundant luxuries of their room. Once guests do arrive their room, they may find it very hard to leave, but the resort is replete with first-class amenities that they will want to discover. Besides meandering through dreamy rose and lavender gardens, guests will spend most of their days playing tennis, croquet or bocce, or casually sipping on wild honey-infused libations poolside—at either of the properties’ heated swimming pools, hot tubs or the adults-only infinity-jacuzzi. There is a fully equipped fitness center that operates around the clock for those

looking to participate in strength-training or cardiovascular activities at any hour of the day or night. The concierge team also offers customized services that encourage exploration of the great outdoors, including hiking, golfing and equestrian excursions and adventures. Upscale extras grant access to a Mercedes-Benz vehicle that guests can freely borrow to go on wine-tasting escapades, cruise through small towns and villages, visit nearby beaches, or go on long scenic drives through the gorgeous Monterey peninsula. Guests that seek a more tranquil respite, can head to the resort’s on-site spa, where they can luxuriate in a series of transformative, nourishing, and soothing vinotherapyfocused and fruit-infused treatments. Opt for the Chardonnay body polish massage, a hydrating and exfoliating body therapy that uses Chardonnay grape-seed extracts to smooth and revitalize the body and skin. The spa is also home to a eucalyptus steam room, sauna and outdoor thermal pools where guests can lay back, unwind and listen to the gentle and soulful melodies of nature.

A Glamorous Refuge of Sun and Sea

Cavo Tagoo Mykonos By Karina Y. Sotelo

G

littering against the cerulean waters of the Aegean, Cavo Tagoo is an escapist’s dream carved into a sprinkled-white cliffside on the western coast of the cosmopolitan island of Mykonos. An ultra-exotic and boho-chic blend of the Greek traditional and the modern: sensuous, whitewashed curves of classic Cycladic architecture and sophisticated minimalistic design, stylish furnishings and eccentric artwork with splashes of bright color and exuberant golden accents. This sexy five-star boutique features only topnotch amenities, including a commodious exhibition-style lobby, an intimate spa, a gift shop and gymnasium, but above all, an unrivaled glamorous pool scene. Guestrooms propose an otherworldly and revolutionary pool experience, each appointed with a combination of plunge pools, private heatedwhirlpools, glass-walled infinity-pools and the island’s most legendary cave pools. The star attraction, though, is the main pool area: a classy and cutting-edge display of a 100foot aquarium bar and an open-face seafront restaurant that partly rests upon a fresh saltwater infinity pool modernly topped with plush sunbeds that, at first glance, appear to be supernaturally floating above water and gently sailing off into the boundless velvetyblue Greek sea. Designed to awaken the soul and stimulate the senses, the accommodations—a collection of 80 classic rooms, premium suites, and private villas—are architectural masterpieces brimming with euphoric experiences, luxurious comforts and stunning views of the sea and beyond. From the exterior, the rooms seamlessly blend into the organic aesthetic, dramatically clinging onto the edge of a jagged

rock formation and cascading down the hills in resemblance of stacked sugar-cubes or melting marshmallow-like structures. Inside, each space is a modish expression of the freespirited island that it surrounds, ingeniously infusing the raw elements of stone, bamboo, wood and water. Reflective-gold fixtures extravagantly juxtapose the monochromatic walls, ceilings and floors; the gemstone-blue hues of the Aegean act as a resplendent contrast and kaleidoscopic panorama. In addition to the breathtaking sea views, guestrooms are enhanced with an insanely exotic feature: pools (but not just any pools, really cool ones). Private villas are multipooled treasures, singly with a lottery of en-suite and outdoor heated tubs, plunge pools and infinity-edge pools. Honeymoon rooms are made extra-romantic with intimate Jacuzzis positioned precisely to gaze out at the endless horizon. Provocative gestures are also found throughout the suite intended to spice up the mood. The most obvious, are the matching bathrobes explicitly embroidered with the words “after-sex” on them. Unearthly encounters will manifest in the cave pool rooms, too. In these creatively designed rooms, guests will get lost in the splendor of serpentine-shaped pools that are concealed by mind-blowing white rock tunneled archways; and will spend all their days fixated on sparkling waters (both of the pool and of the Aegean Sea) and bathing in the sun, forgetting the existence of everything else. Guests are greeted by a handsome staff fashionably dressed in crisp-white attire and primed to serve. Service is superb and deeply rooted in ancient Greek traditions of hospitality, where every guest is treated

with the highest honor and generosity. Should guests decide to venture out to the charming streets of Chora (located only a short walk away from the property) or even sail out to sea, a well-seasoned concierge team will curate personalized activities and excursions, by land and sea. But here, guests do not need to go far to be transported to a different place, the hotel’s on-site spa will grant access to an ultra-relaxing journey. Drawing inspiration from ancient and new world wellness practices, therapies and rituals, the temple-like spa uses sea minerals and Mediterranean ingredients to relax, heal and even beautify the mind, body, and soul. Breakfasts are glorious. Every morning, a team of culinary geniuses prepare an exquisite and ultra-lavish spread of freshly baked pastries, cakes, baguettes, fruits, cheeses, smoked salmon, cured meats, and the most velvety Greek yogurt imaginable. Eggs are made to guests’ liking, coffees and natural juices are pressed to order. An Asian-influenced menu is offered for lunch and dinner and is served poolside or at the hotel’s open-air restaurant—Zuma. Room service is also available (and recommended), fizzy drinks and cocktails are delivered to your suite on a tray that floats on water. The fruit platter—a showcase of vibrant and sweet tropical fruits—is, quite literally, the cherry on top to a true Mykonian escape. No matter where guests find themselves at this glamorous refuge—whether indulging in a transformative treatment, taking a dip or worshipping the sun—they will be summoned to fully surrender to island living—unleash all inhibitions and deepen their connection to the sun and sea. 30

feels secluded and creates the illusion that guests are somewhere far away. Accommodations are exceptionally spacious, modern, and set the tone for ultimate relaxation. Sleekly designed in a neutralbalanced palette, high-ceilings, granite floors, white-covered exposed stone walls, and towering windows with views of the beautiful surrounds—the rooms are refined and calming retreats each individually furnished with distinctive decor and sumptuous amenities. The resort is home to 8 villas that are lavishly appointed with private pools, patios and tennis courts —perfect for families and those seeking an extra level of seclusion. Mountain suites are cream-colored southwestern edifices on the hills, inside they are complete with a grand living room area minimally adorned with artwork, a chic fireplace, and finished with subtle touches

of greenery—potted succulents and other small prickly desert plants. The suite offers a cozy bedroom separate from the living room and a large bathroom that features a glassencased rainfall shower and a freestanding bathtub with heavenly-scented Molton Brown soaps and exfoliating self-care products. Some suites come with private patios. All guestrooms include in-room cocktail kits and a mini-fridge fully stocked with mixers and bottles of wine, an essential amenity that brings guests into full vacation mode. Guests with discerning palates will take pleasure in this gastronomic dreamland. Spearheaded by Food Network’s renowned celebrity chef Beau MacMillan, along with a talented team of tastemakers, Bar Chef Christiaan Röllich and Chef de Cuisine Samantha Sanz (also the youngest female— and Latina—culinary artist to ever lead

here), the kitchen serves local, sustainable, and organic ingredients in form of upscale dining and mixology experiences. Flavorful encounters begin at breakfast, where organic eggs are plated in all of the glorious forms. Guests with an appetite for something spicy, should indulge in the huevos rancheros—a corn tortilla layered with a creamy black bean paste, smothered in a mildly-spicy green tomatillo salsa and topped with two perfectly fried eggs, avocado wedges, colorful cherry tomatoes, fresh cilantro and queso fresco crumbles (plus, it pairs deliciously with a citrus-balanced mimosa). A freshly curated lunch menu is offered poolside, popular meals include crisp green salads, signature burgers, Japanese bento boxes and, of course, a refreshing selection of tropical-inspired cocktails. By evening, guests will start the night’s festivities by mixing and mingling with a handcrafted concoction in hand from Jade

Bar. Here, sip on the “Little Leaf,” a blended mezcal-based drink with cucumber, cilantro, and jalapeño. And for an unforgettable multi-course culinary experience, top the evening off at Elements Restaurant. The menu is abundant (filled with gluten-free and vegetarian options), satisfyingly Asian-infused and seasonal. If available, guests will want to begin their first course with the rock shrimp, it has all the crispy and creamy textures on a bed of sticky white rice. For the main course, the miso glazed salmon is phenomenal and the flavors get better with every bite. Guests will want to save room for dessert, there is an assortment of scrumptious delights to nibble on—the butterscotch budino is the most decadent. Reserve a table by a window or outside to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets. Wellness is at the heart of the Sanctuary

experience; the resort has a wealth of opportunities for guests to escape, unwind and rejuvenate. The spa transports guests to the highest level of peace and restoration via a fusion of massages and pamperings centered on ancient Asian techniques and modern therapies. Guests that opt for cupping or acupuncture therapies will set out on a healing journey, aligning the mind, body and soul. Besides the tennis and pickleball courts, there are an abundance of heartpumping activities; the fitness studio offers a variety of yoga and pilates core strengthening exercises, indoors, outdoors and even in water. Guests have access to multiple swimming pools, but the most popular is the infinity-edge pool—a sparkling desertscape where guests spend most of their days basking in the sun and taking in the most dramatic views of Camelback Mountain.

Southern Belle’s Cakery

Custom Cakes and Sweet Treats By Whitney Thompson

W

hen Jamie Fago was a little girl in Mobile, Alabama, she spent lots of time in the comfort of her great grandmother Sissy’s kitchen. It was there that she learned to bake her famous “Sissy cake,” a vanilla almond pound cake that was her signature. In college, Jamie found inspiration in baking competitions on television, and she made her first custom shaped cake for her now husband Joey’s birthday. The side hustle that was born became a custom cake business that soon outgrew her home kitchen. Jamie and Joey decided then that it was time to expand. The Southern Belle’s Cakery storefront opened in May 2021, despite the pandemic and all the challenges it has presented. Every day in the cheerful, quaint bakery, you can find cake pops, cookies, cupcakes, and even Joey’s famous Rice Krispies® treats. Treat yourself to a cold-brew coffee and a slice of the famous Sissy cake that started it all! And of course, you can order a custom cake for your next event. Jamie and Joey have been overwhelmed by the support of the community. “To realize that we could really do this has been unbelievable. You really can build anything from something very small.” Joey and Jamie have two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth, age 8 and Emilia, age 5. Visit Southern Belle’s Cakery at the Juno Shoppes Plaza just off US 1 for an Instagram-worthy storefront photo along with your goodies. You can also find them on Instagram @sbcakery

With Many Dining Hotspots

Ian Duke Dominates Southampton Culinary Scene By Harry Brads

L

ast year, Ian Duke and partner David Hilty, the owners of the ever-popular Southampton Social Club and Union Burger Bar, unveiled the East End’s hottest new dining destination: Union Sushi and Steak, a modern take on the steakhouses of old. Situated in the historic Bowden Square property that formerly housed the famous Herb McArthy’s, and co-located with Union Burger Bar, Union Sushi & Steak manages to fuse the energy of a supper club from the days of old with a modern ambiance. The cuisine is brought to you by award-winning Chef’s Scott Kampf and Marc Fasciana of varied fame and tenures. The delectable menu features Dry aged steaks that are courtesy of Niman Ranch in Colorado, and the assorted fresh sushi and sashimi menu is both enticing and inventive. As with the Southampton Social club, Union

Sushi & Steak has that “Supper Club” feeling, albeit, for the more sophisticated. “We created Union Sushi & Steak because it’s what the people of Southampton are asking for,” Duke said. “Southampton has no yearround sushi restaurants and there is not a dedicated steakhouse. Right now, it’s a trek for a REAL roll-up-your-sleeves steakhouse dining experience.” Meanwhile, Duke’s award-winning burgers and fries spot, Union Burger Bar continues to serve up American comfort food in the adjacent space. Also, the incredible demand for the Hamptons most popular ghost kitchen popup, The Coop, has made the foodie favorite gain a permanent home. Union Burger Bar is proud to announce that some favorites from The Coop can now be found on the Union Burger Bat menu making it ultimate dinning destination in the East End. The permanent home at Union Burger Bar will

now allow guests to dine in and continue to do take out. Customers can enjoy the menu that The Coop has fantastically curated along with the restaurant’s legendary burger, fries, and milk shake options. “Ultimately I find people always have conflicting perspectives on what they want to eat. What we’re doing is incorporating the best of both worlds - we’re going to have ridiculously great tasting fried chicken and the mashed potatoes with gravy and creamy corn,” Duke states. “But we’re also going to have the healthy roasted chicken with fresh sides like Brussels sprouts and roasted broccoli that are all farm-to-table. The chicken that we’re using is cage-free, antibiotic-free, and hormone-free. So essentially, we’re going to encompass something for everybody.” www.dineatunion.com; www.unionburgerbar.com; www.thecooptogo.com

The Vanguard of America’s New Fashion Vernacular Written By Jadan Horyn @JadanHoryn Edited By Edina Sultanik

You will never believe what happened after you left the photoshoot at Ladurée,” says a voice on the phone one evening in August. I give the long pause and then say, “Try me.”

The day before, I’d joined what turned out to be a 10-hour photo shoot for the cover of this magazine, featuring a striking fashion designer made up in full Hollywood glam-style hair and makeup posing in a range of unbelievable scenes, from an indoor swimming pool to a swanky hotel bar. The set was littered with racks of glamorous evening gowns and dresses, sequins, feathers and tulle, priceless gems and jewelry as rows of couture heels,

pumps, and stilettos lined the walls. The shoot itself was scripted into scenes, each progressing in its level of whim and fancy with people and props to propel the unified vision. It was a visual tour de force to watch - and participate in. I was roped into modeling as a man-bunned bartender—a human prop supporting the drama. So naturally, after such an extravagant experience, what I was about to be told had to be equally extreme. Those couture pumps, heels, and stilettos had been placed in a red roller suitcase. In the damp darkness of the unusually chilly

August evening, they had been left sitting on the street in the hustle and bustle of loading trunks. The designer on the other end tells me that they were her best shoes—she brought all her favorite things from her own closet for this shoot. I hold my breath. She says, “You can imagine when I got to my showroom and I realize there is no red suitcase. I make a beeline back to Ladurée in the pouring rain. Professional photoshoot makeup was running down my face, and my hair was frozen stiff from more hairspray than most people use in a month, looking at what can only be described as a fashion disaster. The red suitcase is strewn across the road, its contents gone. A homeless man smiles from

across the street. In his hand, there appears a flash of lace, but it’s quickly gone. He says another guy took all the shoes.” I gasp at the thought of a suitcase full of designer heels, gone, and then start laughing and say, “I am so sorry.” “I think it’s the universe’s way of keeping me grounded,” the designer says of the incident with a laugh. Times of stress reveal one’s character. I’m struck by the sentiment. The designer who told me this story, who is featured on the cover of this magazine, is

Shani Grosz, owner and design director of SHANI Collection. Shani is not angry, not indignant about the loss of her best shoes, but calmly reflective. It’s that ability to stay calm and positive in the face of personal and professional challenges that has helped her rise in the ranks of the fashion world, while maintaining a life filled with loyal friends and colleagues. I met Shani at the Plaza Hotel for what was supposed to be breakfast. It turned into a 3-hour High Tea at the Palm Court followed by a hectic 12-hour workday, culminating in a self-care treat--foot massages. An unusually authentic personal experience shared with one of America’s most popular designers

whose name is on dresses in every woman’s closet, but who herself personally remains largely under the radar. Until now. Shani is the eponymous designer of a dress collection that’s carried in every major department store in the US, including Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord and Taylor. and self motivated,” she says . “I started this label as a “trade”. I was very young and making inroads in the dress world and a company approached me to come work for them. I remember feeling very small in this giant conference room with some very wellseasoned fashion executives. I told them, ‘I’ll work for you if you finance my own label as well.’ Looking back on that now, I can’t believe I took such a bold step. But not even 24 hours later they had called me back and 52

agreed to do it.” And the SHANI label was created….. Shani focuses her designs around her customers first and foremost. Rather than forcing her ideal aesthetic on the customer, she looks to see what would look beautiful on women and then seeks to drape them in the art of her creation. Shani describes her customer: “She is not twenty with the perfect

body. She is a real woman who maybe had kids or is a working woman who wants a dress that helps hide flaws. We are conscious of creating dresses to help a woman look flawless even if she isn’t. I design for real women.” With her customers’ needs in mind and her laser-focus on business, Shani adapts to what is selling and what materials women want to wear. “Our attention is on design and quality.

in front of millions of people look their best, effortlessly, every day, as well as millions of women looking for daytime looks or dresses for special occasions for their everyday lives. She also provides dresses for major movies and TV shows on a regular basis. Shani is increasingly involved with makeover TV segments such as Ambush Makeover on NBC and her dresses were featured on Good Morning America as the miracle dresses that women love to love. “Clothing takes you

from the ordinary to the extraordinary. I want a woman to put on one of my dresses and feel beautiful and feel as if she can conquer the world,” Shani says. While designing clothes for power women, humility is the most prominent of her personality traits. She isn’t self-deprecating, but genuinely humble. Shani had sent me a multi-page email with answers to my preinterview questions. When we sat down she September 2021

thanked me for the exercise. I laughed and asked for what, half expecting the thank you to be insincere. Shani answers “I don’t get much time to sit and reflect. I took your questions seriously and it provided me with an opportunity to write out my thoughts.” My interest was piqued. In her email responses back to me, Shani sent me something that stood out. “I have a deep love for what I do and a deep sense of appreciation for the people that are around me that help me bring my vision to life. That includes my very talented employees, my financial partner, and all the factories around the world that produce for us and to the stores that continuously give me the opportunity to bring my dreams and vision to life. I take none of this for granted. And if it’s one thing that Covid taught us it’s that nothing in life is given and that anything can be taken away.” Shani has learned gratitude, flexibility, resourcefulness, and perseverance – important life lessons from her late father, who passed away suddenly 2 years ago -- and it’s paid off. “I was very close to my father. He was definitely my single biggest cheerleader in life. He always believed in me. He taught me it’s always better to be on the giving side

than the receiving side. My generous streak comes from him. When he passed away two years ago, I went to clean out his office. I saw that he kept every article that was written about my company and every photo that was ever printed. He was very proud of me. I feel like he still guides me today from above.” Shani is that rare combination of multi-modality artist/designer and astute businesswoman. “There is the art form of what I do and then there’s the business side. I almost feel like these are two tracks that work simultaneously, and both have to be strong to make perfect harmony. Fashion is not just about creating a beautiful design. It has to be produced and it has to sell. The art side came naturally to me. I had a dream to create art that women can wear. It was a way of sharing my vision and my version of beauty with the world. The business side I learned on the job and am still learning every day.” Her self-taught business acumen proved to be solid during the challenging days of the pandemic. With no in-person social events due to Covid, dress sales dipped dramatically in 2020. But drawing on her constant determination, upbeat approach, personal relationships with many of her clients and retail partners, Shani fought hard to stay

in business. Now, post-pandemic, she’s pivoted her strategies, and she’s not only surviving, she’s thriving. “To still be here and to be running a business that’s considered super successful, is a major accomplishment that I am very proud of,” she says. “This industry has a lot of highs and lows and I think the biggest lesson is to never give up and have faith that there is something stronger that is guiding us. Every ‘No’ can turn into a ‘Yes.’ The trick is not to get too caught up in the low points or the rejections. Every store that we sell to today said no to me at some point before they actually opened the door and gave me a chance. I think the mindset was always that you need to believe in what you’re doing so that you can keep doing it and keep knocking on those doors. No means not now… And not to give up !!!” she adds. During my 12-hour follow-along with Shani, I had the opportunity to see her in action at her design studio. Many members of her loyal team have been with her for over a decade, and their dedication to her is reciprocated. Her long-time assistant Tin had a stack of documents ready for her when we entered her office in the late afternoon. I watched as Tin explained that dress after dress was sold

out and Covid-impacted supply constraints meant wait times could affect retail confidence. Shani reacted swiftly, identifying alternative suppliers and textile types, sizes, colors, hues; typing on WhatsApp to see who could deliver the product at the right pricepoint at the right time. Once the work is done Tin lightens up ever so slightly. I ask him what his favorite design is - he regales me with a loud proclamation : “Sir-- I’ve worn them all,” he says.” Beyond her best-selling dress line, Shani is

launching her own luxury beauty line, and her own fine jewelry collection. Shani showed me the original sketches of the jewelry and she took me to meet the craftsmen who are making each piece by hand to her specifications. Each piece has a hidden ruby, which traditionally has been used to promote fertility and ward off evil. Hope and protection - powerful motivators for women. For American women, it’s clear that there is a new designer in the pantheon - a vanguard of a new fashion vernacular. If you don’t yet

know the name of this fashion designer on the rise you will. She is about to take America by storm. From the red carpet to the board room, and everywhere in between. Wherever there is a real woman boldly going forth into the world there will be a SHANI dress going with her. @shanidress.official. www.Shanicollection.com

xercise and healthy eating are paramount to our overall well being, especially in stressful and uncertain times like those brought on by the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Roxanna King, personal trainer and owner of Body by Roxy, has a passion for fitness and for sharing her wealth of experience to help others enrich their lives and improve their overall health Roxy started dancing at the age of three. She grew up performing around the world, and she soon learned to truly look after and care for her body. Thinking intuitively about her body and her fitness has inspired her work as a trainer. “My whole message is that it’s your body. Be in tune with it. You can be healthy and injury free if you really look after your body.”

Throughout her career, that spans, nearly five decades, she has never suffered an injury. “I owe that to my fitness, my stretching, and to my structure of looking after and listening to my body,” she explained.

Through the powerful tool of social media, people worldwide can find her services. So on any given day, she could be working out with someone locally by the pool or via Zoom with someone in Italy.

The pandemic has changed the way business looks for Roxy, but this has been positive in many ways. “I feel like I’ve had more of a connection with people through all of this. Where women might have been part of a larger class of 40 women and not known anyone there, now there are connections and people looking after and empowering each other. I love to feel everyone supporting each other.” Roxy offers small group classes in addition to personal training services, which have fostered the kinds of real connections she described. She even offers virtual training.

Roxy finds it so rewarding to share knowledge that she has learned in the world of fitness. She loves connecting with people both globally and in Palm Beach. “When I get messages from people all over the world and I’m able to help them, that really drives me,” she shared. Do You Know The Three Fitness Mistakes Everyone Makes...

25A

By Tracy Campoli

Studies have shown that working out regularly for as little as 30 minutes per day can help to balance your estrogen levels. This is important because when your hormones are BALANCED you will increase lean muscle mass and reduce your fat mass...which results in you looking super fit and feminine. And we can all agree that we are busy, right? Imagine spending LESS time on your fitness, and seeing better results! A core piece of my training with my students is built on doing 30 minute varied workouts daily, because it works! It keeps you energized, fit, and having healthy and balanced hormones. Mistake #3: Trying To “Figure It Out” Alone Research shows that more than 92% of people who start a fitness program FAIL. Depressing, right?

E

However a study from the University of Chicago suggested that your likelihood of success is directly related to accountability and support.

veryone wants a slim, toned body, right? And here in South Florida, it’s even more important in our “forever summer” climate. We simply can’t hide under layers of clothing.

I’ve been a trainer and Pilates instructor for over 20 years, and there are three mistakes that I see women making all the time when it comes to getting fit and looking and feeling great at any age. The worst part is...they don’t even know they are making these crucial mistakes! UNTIL NOW! Mistake #1: “Groundhog Day” Fitness Do you remember the movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray? He found himself reliving the same day over and over and over again. When it comes to fitness, most people are making this mistake. In fact, years ago when I worked at a large gym in NYC, I would see the same people, working out on the same equipment, doing the same exercises day after day, month after month...and their bodies? They never looked any different.

72

And that’s just what we can see on the outside. Doing the same kind of workouts day after day puts you at risk of injury from overusing your muscles, may have you hit a dreaded plateau (where you are doing the work but not seeing results) and research has shown that varying your workouts will not only help you burn more calories and fat but also will help your BRAIN health tremendously. A recent study from UCLA Medical Center and University of Pittsburgh showed that taking on varied physical activity improved the volume of the brain and even reduced risk of Alzheimer’s by up to 50%! So if you want to see external changes like more lean muscle mass and weight loss, and also increase your brain health, it’s crucial that you include a variety of workouts in your fitness routine. Mistake #2: Believing More Equals Better We’ve been brainwashed to believe that if we do longer workouts, that we’ll see better results. This is a myth and a huge mistake, especially for women and hormonal health.

25A Metropolitan Magazine Palm Beach | Metmagny.com

Couple this with all of the confusing and conflicting information that is readily available online, it’s no wonder that most people find getting fit overwhelming. The solution is simple: you don’t need to do this on your own. In fact, you shouldn’t because you only have about a 10% chance that you’ll succeed. Community is what is needed to help you WIN! So whether it’s a fit friend, a family member, a trainer or an online community, having a COMMUNITY is the key to success! These are the three most common mistakes when it comes to getting fit. When you implement these simple strategies you will quickly and easily start to see better results. Tracy Campoli is a Miami based television host on the CW network and a lifestyle and wellness coach who helps women lose weight and get fit without diets or boring boot camp workouts or burpees. She is the creator of Amazing Arms... in just 7 Days, that has helped thousands of women say “bye-bye” to bat wings at any age. McKenna Camille’s New Single, “Strawberry Shortcake,” is

Savoring the Summer Vibes

C

raving something sweet, fresh and new this Summer? “Strawberry Shortcake” is not just America’s favorite dessert, but also McKenna Camille’s smashing new single that’s sure to delight. This pop/dance song has a 1970’s twist that blends old and new sounds for something truly original.

Who was the producer on the track?

We sat down with the singer, songwriter, model, and actress McKenna Camille to speak with her about her newly released single “Strawberry Shortcake.” Check out the interview here:

I recorded it at Studio City Sound in Studio City, California.

How did you come up with the music? I told my producer that I wanted a Summery song that had a little 70’s flair to it, and we went from there. What inspired you to write this song? I love Summer, so it was a combination of that, and I also really wanted to make a song that reminds me of those cheesy summer teen drama movies. Did it have to do with a past experience or something you are going through now?

78

I work with NiMusic. Did you have a co-writer? I wrote the song with Eric Johnson and Danial Jacobson. Where did you record it?

What’s one trick you use for keeping your vocal cords lubricated and to avoid losing your voice! Lukewarm water! Not cold, not hot, just in the middle. When do you expect the song to be released? It was released on August 1st! Is that there anything out now that is comparable or similar? Many artists are releasing Summer songs, so yes, but I don’t know of many artists who are trying to bring back 70’s music.

I mean yes and no. It’s a very lighthearted song, but that being said, it’s also about thinking about that perfect Summer you had/ want to have.

Will you be releasing remixes?

Why was it important to write this song? I really want to start bringing more of a 70’s inspiration into my music and pop music in general, while still keeping with modern pop. I think a Summer song was the perfect way to lightly introduce this!

Will you be shooting a music video?

25A Metropolitan Magazine Palm Beach | Metmagny.com

I don’t have anything planned at the moment, but I would love to!

My music video is up on my YouTube! “Strawberry Shortcake” Video https://www.youtube.com/results?search_

Healthy Home Environments

25A

by Dr Ken Grey AP, DOM Holistic Physician

M

aking a connection with the bodies that house ours souls and the homes that house our bodies can be eluding. As with all Love affairs, this type of relationship will take time, patience, and perseverance. Each time we embark on a new living space, it is our prerogative to see the opportunity to create a Sanctuary. For some of us lightness only comes with flying away to some destination, while home is viewed as just a place to hold the things we own or own us, of shelter, protection from the elements, and possibly raise a family, sometimes create a work space, and of course to eat and sleep. How do we create a Living sculpture of our life? How can our homes offer the opportunity to build an extension to our lives more than just the chore of living? Feng Shui, originating from ancient china, is the art of spatial arrangement and orientation in relation to the flow of energy (Qi). The art of Feng Shui claims to use energy forces to harmonize individuals with their surrounding environment. The term ‘feng shui’ literally translates as “wind-water” in English. In the search for balance and healing we may forget to look to what is closest to us. Taking courses, attending week long retreats, and subscribing to foreign belief systems in the never-ending search to clear the clutter and stress from our lives will prove futile if we are surrounded by clutter, imbalance and disorganization in our homes. Some simple ways to create a temple of rest, relaxation, and happiness: 1.Choose cotton, silk, wool, and natural fiber fabrics for objects that touch your skin whenever possible.

80

2. Use Storage Bins for seasonal decorations and objects clearly labeled and stored out of site when not in use. 3.Purchase all tools, kitchen , cleaning etc. with a conscious attention to detail and passion for use. For instance, knives and cooking instruments that feel great in your hand and are satisfying to use. Pots and pans that inspire you to cook, Dish soap and cleaning solutions without harsh chemicals that smell great and have natural mood enhancing essential oils. 4. Style your home with an intention for each room, and with the same sentiment that you would style your wardrobe. Comfortable rooms should feel comfortable and have color combinations that are soothing and relaxing hues. Choose furniture with round edges. Rooms for entertaining may be more energized with brighter colors, and furniture with sharper edges and exalting objects. 5. Do not underestimate the power of great art. Beautiful art can be found in the most unassuming places, museums , local social places exhibiting artists, good will, donation type places, and more. Choose what moves you and makes an impression on your mind, and heart, as well as your eyes.. Furthermore, a healthy home environment can include elements from nature to enhance your environment such as plants and semiprecious stones like Quartz. It is said that the vibration of Quartz enhances spiritual growth, spirituality, awareness, and wisdom. It increases inspiration and creativity. It can also help with concentration, studying, and retaining what one learns. It is a stone of harmony and is helpful in romantic relationships. We may find that besides the Breathe and waves of peace that will emanate from

Chloe Mosbacher

25A

Chloe Mosbacher depicts herself and her loved ones in surreal settings shaped and distorted by different mental and emotional states. The paintings function as a set of collages and transparent images overlaid on top of one-another, evoking a sense of multiplicity - which to her, portrays the idea that several events, or realities are unfolding at once. With this technique, Mosbacher blurs the lines between igure and ground within the picture plane to express how our internal and external landscapes are wholly interconnected. The figures within each painting are used as guises representing 84

various emotional states felt in moments of privacy or alternatively representing different stages within one’s life, such as states of existential questioning or searching for meaning. Mosbacher is a multimedia artist and painter based in New York’s Hudson Valley. She is currently pursuing her BFA in painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art. Mosbacher has had solo exhibitions at the Woodstock Artists Association Museum in Woodstock, New York and at the Beacon Artists Union Gallery in Beacon, New York. She also

In addition, she has participated in group shows at Collar Works in Troy, NY, the Trolley Barn in Poughkeepsie, NY, Womenswork.art in Poughkeepsie, as well as at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the New York Academy of Art. She has been a featured artist on the Visionary Art Collective website and in the Organic Hudson Valley Magazine and has had work published in Al Jazeera.

ax Moran, born and raised in the Midwest, began his career as a painter when he was awarded a scholarship to the Columbus College of Art and Design in 1977. Early periods of work following college focused on the Amish of Ohio. Looking back today they stood in stark contrast with the cultural correction occurring in the early 80’s. Ohio subjects in those early years included a body of work created with the Columbus Ballet Met, billboards, punk rock music scene and plein air works. Called to the coast Max spent the mid 80’s through early 90’s documenting Island life and exhibiting his work in New England based from his studio on Martha’s Vineyard. Although his work has carried him to many parts of the world such as Paris, Mexico and Ireland, for the last twenty-five years Max has taken his inspiration from landscapes throughout New York State. Max has documented places and people from the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains to the streets of Manhattan where he lived in the East Village. He now focuses most of his work on the fields of the North Fork of Long Island. In 2004 Bentley Publishing Group introduced the “Manhattan Rain Series” to the international art publishing market at Art Expo New York. One of the paintings, “Waiting for a Cab-Park Avenue,” was ranked in the top ten in overall sales of Bentley’s large inventory of art posters and still is in print – recently featured in NBC’s “This is Us.” Mr. Moran’s paintings are luminous treasures, capturing light and atmosphere in a way that quiets the head and feeds the soul. His landscapes, which he paints on location, are his attempt to communicate the moment and the spontaneity of the scene. His is a loose and flowing style because, in his words: “it tells much more than infinite detail.” He currently exhibits work on the East End and in Manhattan. William McElcheran

William McElcheran (1927-1999) embraced a variety of media as his means of expression. He was equally proficient at drawing, painting, bas-relief and sculpture. Quickly, he became one of the most accomplished and versatile figurative sculptors of the 20th century. McElcheran is well-known for his businessmen, which are included in influential collections across three continents.

that animates his oeuvre. Bill McElcheran, the sculptor, always kept in mind the context of his work as he created each individual piece. His businessmen aren’t mere bronze figures; these hurrying figures touch the world with their relevant and immediately identifiable subject matter. He distilled his bronzes into classic forms which never lost their grace and movement.

The wit, humor and irony of these pieces comes from his combination of masterful craftsmanship, moral courage and intellect which gave rise to the powerful humanism

McElcheran’s charismatic figures have intuitively been featured in public spaces, serving as a mirror to those rushing to and fro, a reflection of the working person. The below

STATEMENT ART by Contributing Writer Samara Ginsberg

othing makes a more dynamic entrance to a home than a mesmerizing work of art. Stacey Mandell creates largescale art that quite literally makes a statement like no other. A former attorney, Stacey incorporates the historic writing system of Gregg Shorthand to visually articulate literary works, music, and societal reflections in a gestural abstraction of discriminating intellectualism. She is a pioneer, elevating her learned shorthand to a true art form. Her unique style first caught the attention of Palm Beach art dealer Paul Fisher, who describes her artworks as “remarkably sophisticated and compelling.” Fisher continued, “Stacey Mandell’s artworks are so interesting in their narrative illustrations that we just don’t mention enough how each of her works is a perfectly balanced composition that is as specific, yet organic as a zen garden. Like a zen garden, we can relax into the pleasing and stimulating colours and appreciate the underlying thoughtfulness of each and every little line and object.” Marigay McKee, the cofounder and managing partner of venture firm Fernbrook Capital

90

Management and Board member at Aston Martin, is a collector of Mandell’s artwork. The fashion and luxury icon agreed with Fisher’s assessment and commented, “Stacey’s art is utterly unique, and I was excited to learn about her work. Her art has a harmonious flow and makes me feel happy and at peace. Every house should have at least one ‘wow’ work of art; Stacey’s art has the ‘wow’ factor that brings life to any room.”

Fashion Photographer

Tyler Kenny

F

ashion Photographer Tyler Kenny, was born and raised in Colonia, New Jersey. A product of his loving and supportive parents- Lisa Caccamo and Patrick Kenny- Tyler always knew he was destined for greatness behind the lens. His love for photography started when he was gifted his first camera by his father on his 13th birthday. Tyler was ready to create for the world. With his theatrical persona and love for storytelling, there was no denying that he was here to perform. Collaborating with friends and family using different scenarios and realities to carry them into was how his journey began. Following years of YouTube university, the self-taught photographer expanded his love for portraits, expressions, and movement. It wasn’t until he turned 22, that his love for fashion had developed. Once Tyler understood the concept of a fashion editorial, there was no stopping him. To create beautiful stories with fashionable clothing AND be featured in magazines was a dream come true. Partnering with modeling agencies allowed him to bring his eccentric and edgy images to life in ways he couldn’t imagine. This eventually led Tyler into his niche as a fashion photographer. He is most inspired by how different lighting and conditions interact with clothing. Light is Tyler’s specialty, as he always experiments out of the box, with a variety of settings for both in studio and on location projects. His life goal is to travel around the world with his lens, while joining forces with influential artists, Icons and luxury

brands for timeless magazines. Tyler tells stories through images his clients relate to and persists on building upon it. His motto is, “A perfect photo is a combination of great light and raw emotion” - Tyler Kenny. To date, Tyler has been featured in various magazines such as L’officiel, Harper’s Bazaar, Numero Russia and Vanity Teen. You can find him capturing the perfect moment in the streets of New York City. He loves not only the amazing work and experiences, but the people he meets on his journey. So many great creatives can be connected through shared interests and opportunities. In this industry, everyone has something to offer you, just as you offer the same to them, whether it be resources or knowledge. Tyler found out that being around other creative like-minded people provides the most powerful learning experiences. From hair and wardrobe stylists, to makeup artists, it’s always amazing to see diverse individuals come together to add to a vision and help it come to fruition. This project with Metropolitan Magazine was particularly special. Everyone on this project was a dream to work with, as we all did our part and then some. he concept always comes first Gurevich explained. An idea that can be totally vague at that early stage, but it’s always there as a point of departure. I start building around it, enhancing it with concepts. If a particular piece doesn’t exist or is not available at the moment, I make one myself. That’s where my designer’s background comes in handy. When I styled an advertising campaign for NIKON and a campaign for the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, for instance, I made the main dresses myself. If Gurevich’s powerful cohesive visionary mind was created in the crucible of his youth, then his ambition was galvanized by the first time he laid eyes on American Vogue. When other boys were preparing themselves to become 94

firefighters or cosmonauts, he dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. Life took him first to Israel then the United States. Here he attended and graduated from FIT, working for Zac Posen then Liza Minnelli. From there, he released his own collections. America was a land of opportunity but also one of ruthless artistic appropriation by others. Gurevich has carved out a niche for himself as the visionary behind numerous advertising campaigns and the covers of countless magazines. Often imitated, never equaled. Stylist. Photographer. photographer, best known for creating strong fashion images with luxury flair, characterized by an extreme degree of individuality. Prior to becoming a professor at a Fashion Institute and a film director (“Collective Effort”) Gurevich has worked with Academy Award-winner Liza Minnelli; styled advertising campaigns for NIKON and the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, fashion presentations, look-books, music videos, advertising campaigns for bridal, millinery, and eyewear brands, and has styled countless fashion editorials. His work has appeared in numerous print publications including The New York Times, Martha Stewart Weddings, US, HELLO, DEPARTURES, Travel & Leisure, as well as TV ads and billboards around the world.

Finale of Artist Don Hershman’s

‘Donald and Victor: Under The Influence’ Exhibit By Lillian Langtry

A

rtist Don Hershman celebrated the finale of his latest collection of original pieces, as part of a retrospective series inspired by the late Victor Arimondi. In the show, Donald and Victor: Under The Influence, the inventive artist embodied his visceral need to pursue interests and creative expressions as he paid a loving tribute to his former partner who succumbed to AIDS in 2001. Hershman’s paintings recognize the unique attributes of Arimondi’s work, featuring a display that is compassionate and reflective of our modern times. A feature film chronicling Don & Victor’s relationship, with a screenplay written by Don, is titled SHOOT ME BEAUTIFUL and is currently in preproduction. George Rush serves as executive producer. Shortly after the opening reception, back in May, there was also a successful Art Talk with guest speaker Adam Stoltman, a former New York Times and Time, Inc., photo editor, who was in conversation with Hershman and shared remarks on the legacy of Arimondi’s work. Arimondi was a famed Italian American model and art photographer whose unique eye and sensuous style captivated the world. At the time of his death, Hershman inherited his estate, including his vast collection of photography and art, as well as never before seen portraits by Arimondi of Andy Warhol superstar Ivy Nicholson. “During our 17 years together Victor steadfastly guided and molded me, and after his sudden death in 2001 I became solidly dedicated to my art, his presence more powerful than ever - a driving force to create something that is no longer a choice for me, but a necessity,” says Hershman. “The show at the Salomon Gallery brought my and Victor’s work full circle with 20 new selected paintings from 2019 to 2021, along with a carefully curated selection of 38 photographs, taken between 1972 and 2001, four of which I interpreted into my own paintings, called the D & V Series.”

Ivy Nicholson The exhibit served as a love letter to a luminary who graced the pages of fashion magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Esquire, and appeared on the runway for many top designers, predominantly Valentino and Cerruti. Arimondi’s determination to turn the camera lens from his face onto the world he saw before him led to famously shooting the likes of Grace Jones, Liv Ullman, and Norman Mailer, as well as several portraits of male nudes captured during the pre-AIDS culture of the early 1980s. He also notably focused imagery of the plight of the homeless of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood suffering during the height of the AIDS epidemic. In his words, “Since I posed in front of the camera for so many years, my experience with talented photographers made me realize a way to express my inner world.” For more information, visit: donhershmanart.com, salomonarts.com

Modern 3-Dimensional Paintings Come To Life at ‘A is for Art’ in Southampton By Ann Grenier

S

outhampton is now home to A is for Art. Modern American artist and designer, Walter Sternlieb, has opened the Hampton’s hottest new gallery, and it is part of the village’s strong legacy with backing of curated collaborations in the community. Located at 60 Jobs Lane, A is for Art brings to life the prolific vision of Walter, who is known out east as a respected designer, builder, woodworker, and master craftsman. Now his latest title as industrial artist will only further plant his applaudable achievements. His charismatic work on display was brought forth by ingenuity and creativity. “I woke up one morning with this idea of a 3-dimensional flag, made a prototype of it, then built it, painted it and hung it,” states Walter. The specific vision of the then novice artist led to a series that includes his iconic pieces “The Staircase,” and “5 Hearts.” Eventually he established a professional portfolio that was

98

so large it took up all of his wall space in his home where he displayed pieces. The colorful collection impressed visiting friends and fans and eventually led to thoughts of opening up a gallery to showcase his work. “I knew there was a run-down property on Jobs Lane. I called the landlord and decided to rent it,” he goes on about the inspiration to open his own place. “The interior was very run down, and I thought I could have a shabby-chic art gallery, but shabby chic just isn’t me, so we went in and cleaned it up a little bit. We started hanging my work, and work of some of my friends. In a very short period, I was getting a very good response to my work.” Walter’s expressive 3-dimensional paintings encompass powerful expressions full of rich color and bold design. The bright shapes are pops of color that bring bliss to anyone who uses them as part of the design of a home or office space. The dazzling and virtuosic collection comes from a special place in Walter’s personal

history that many can relate to and why his artwork stands out as a popular choice to art collectors. “As a child, my parents dragged me to museums, and historic sites. I didn’t understand the purpose of all of it. I was very fortunate that they took me to all these places. It helped me in what I do today. All the things that I saw, and I have done in the past, have made me what I am today.” For more information, please call (516) 3561191 or visit the gallery in Southampton at 60 Jobs Lane. aisforart.us LOCATION: A is for Art 60 Jobs Lane Southampton, New York 11968

SPOTLIGHT with Julianne Michelle 25A

I

Will Head: The Consummate Business Gentleman Changing the World his Way

Will Head with his daughter Lily.

had the pleasure of chatting with serial entrepreneur Will Head to discuss the launch of his new media platform, how he got his start in business, family life, politics, and fond memories of President Ronald Reagan. Will was born and raised in Wilmington, NC. His childhood summer home, in fact, was the same house featured in the famed TV series Dawson’s Creek. Both mother and father descended from a long lineage of Americans dating back to English merchant adventures, who journeyed here on the Mayflower, and the French Huguenots, who fled religious persecution. At age 7, Will and his father started growing Camellia seedlings in their backyard, and Will sold them to Sears. As a teenager, Will started his own successful bike rental. These early business developmental experiences would pave the way to a long and prosperous career. Will confides that he had a midlife crisis about 10 years ago, so instead of buying a Harley Davidson, he founded a 20,000 member tea party group, Wake Up America of North Carolina, which was a credited impetus for flipping the NC General Assembly from Democrat to Republican in 2010. The Tea Party group inspired the creation of an online media platform by the same name, which produced 1,000 minutes of 5-minute shows on multiple topics, viewable on a cell phone. However, producing shows in a studio was very expensive, so why not just provide

100

the platform and let the viewers submit the content? This was how Will came up with the concept for NOOZ. NOOZ is an innovative media platform, which delivers local coverage of community businesses, events, and issues by leveraging its network of social media and cable television outlets. NOOZ trains and deploys NOOZ Correspondents as Brand Ambassadors to cover and promote these local businesses and community events on the NOOZ Media Network. Will’s passion for politics burgeoned at a young age with the opportunity of a lifetime working for President Ronald Reagan. “I absolutely loved Ronald Reagan. He was a gentleman full of common sense, and he had a way with words like no other.” While attending the Ravenscroft school and volunteering with the local teenage Republicans group, Will accepted the Reagan campaign’s invitation to stay out of high school his senior year and travel with them on the road. “At the Kansas City convention, I was 1 of 800 Youthful Reagan staff members. We made all the signs and greeted everyone at the airport, trying to outshout all the Ford people. Ton of fun. However, Reagan lost on the third night of voting. It came right down to the wire, and Clarke Reed, who ran the Mississippi delegation and loved Reagan, flipped the whole delegation on the third night of voting after Ford promised him a job or something. That’s how Ford won. I’m so depressed. I had stayed up 72 hours without sleeping, drinking Coors beers out of trash cans and making signs. We are at the Alameda Plaza Hotel ballroom in Kansas City, and Reagan has two aids with him. I have my coat and tie on. I’m the little high school guy, who has to get on a plane the next day and miss spending the fall with Reagan. I met him five times, but he didn’t really know me. I figured I’ll just walk over there and join them and they can ask me to leave. So I walked over there to Reagan and his two aids. Reagan looked at me and at his two aids, and the aids looked at him. They did not ask me to leave. They are talking strategy. Then it got so quiet, I could hear a pin drop on the carpet. Clarke Reed, who sold him out, walks across the ballroom floor to see Reagan in the corner. He walks right up beside me, looks over at Reagan, and says, “I’m so sorry.” Reagan

25A Metropolitan Magazine Palm Beach | Metmagny.com

extends his hand, shakes his hand, and says, “That’s ok. I understand.” Clarke Reed broke down crying, realizing he made the biggest mistake of his life. Reagan proceeded to give his concession speech. It was an emotional moment.” While Reagan eventually lost the election in 1976, there was a paradigm shift in voting that contributed to Reagan’s broad appeal and eventual victory in 1980. President Lyndon Johnson had implemented huge spending programs with unintended consequences that further split families apart. Government pay-outs to single mothers financially enabled fathers to leave and incentivized women to monetize their children in lieu of employment. Additionally, single mothers in subsidized housing were prohibited from allowing fathers to spend the night, which is a policy still in effect. “Many people were disappointed with big government and started to vote for Republicans state wide and nationally. However, they didn’t start changing their registrations until the late 1970s, because if you lived in a little town in my state, the candidates for local judge or dog catcher were all Democrats. This precluded registered Republicans from voting in the primaries. It took a while, but now most people I know are Republicans. This shift kicked off with Reagan in 1976 and then when he was president in 1980.” When Will is not working, developing new businesses, Will is a proud father to his beautiful daughter, Lily Head (@lily_winston), who is a successful model. What are the most important life values/ lessons you learned that you try to impart to your daughter? Set goals, follow through on what you tell others, be on time, be authentic, don’t gossip about others, appreciate life, be thankful, know history, respect the sacrifices of our Founding Fathers and our military, and love God. George Bugatti’s

“The Trial On The Potomac”

The Trial On The Potomac” by George Bugatti at the St. Clement’s Theatre is an interesting show in that it brings the audience “What If ?”. What if then president Nixon wanted to go to trial instead of stepping down? What if all the damning evidence against John Dean, John Sirica and Leon Jaworski was brought forward to possibly exonerate the president? These were some of the questions given last night and the theory of the plot was a good one, however, not always well executed upon. The acting too was uneven and so was Josh Iacovelli’s direction. At times actors went through the process robotically, Richard Nixon (Rich Little) seemed tired and lethargic in his role, Richard Wingert as Senator Edward Kennedy’s accent went in and out and cheapened the role as a result. “The Trial” had many good things in its 90 minutes, a nicely appointed set by Josh Iacovelli; very good lighting by John Lant and some solid acting by Kelsey Lea Jones as Diane Sawyer. The script and the inconsistent acting was not enough to sustain the show, however. When we had a strong Peter Rodino (Tom Gregory) and a very good Geoff Shepard (Nick Mauldin), we had a terrible Gordon Liddy and a worse John Dean. It’s not that Matthew Hammond is a bad actor, he is not, it’s more that the direction by Iacovelli doesn’t capture who Liddy or Dean were; the mannerisms, cadence and style are never there in this play.

Anathema to Broadway and off Broadway we actually have a play that is pro Nixon; the concept in of itself is shocking and the questions asked that underlie the play are very good as well, the play just never sustains momentum. A wonderful speech at the end by Rich Little never makes up for the lackluster conversations that he has with Dean nor Shepard. Iacovelli has Victor Colicchio (John Sirica) acting more like John Gotti than a trial judge. Paul Caliendo as Judge Warren Burger is very subdued and flat at times; he is humorous at others and here lies the inconsistency of Bugatti. Some of the performers as well as support team are also brought into question... Why is Judge Andrew Napolitano brought in to be a consultant? Napolitano was a Bergen County Judge at one time and he was consulting on FOX News before recently being thrown off the station for sexually harassing a young man. How can his insight into an off Broadway show be of any use? Geoff Shepard himself lived through the Watergate hearings so why didn’t he do all the technical consulting? If “The Trial On The Potomac” is ever to succeed it would need to be rewritten at certain points and it would need direction that captures the individuals that were brought into this play. The play would need stronger and more consistent acting throughout.

Devoting a little time to connecting with our inner selves, learning what makes us truly special, and incorporating this magnetic quality into our personality can have untold benefits on our lives. The Charisma Factor is the ultimate handbook that unlocks the mysterious formula for charm and influence. Whether you’re someone who lives in the

spotlight, or you’re a college graduate just starting out on a career, this book will improve the way you communicate and interact with others. Packed with useful lessons and Leesa’s personal tips, The Charisma Factor will be your go-to instruction manual to embrace your individuality, discover your authenticity and empower yourself like never before. Author Rowland explains this was the “best time” to come out with the book. “I think it’s especially important now and when we’re coming out of the pandemic. I want to help people become the best that they can be. One of the chapters that’s a really strong chapter is about different charismatic personalities, the traits that they have, and their magnetism. It’s like a behavior study really,” Rowland says. Jen Dixon

Ready for Her Next Chapter as Class Mom in Yoga Pant Nation by Laurie Gelman By Elizabeth Elston

T

he hilarious and irreverent Jen Dixon is class mom—again— in YOGA PANT NATION (Henry Holt and Company; 978-1-25077757-7; July 13, 2021; $26.99; Hardcover) by Laurie Gelman. And Jen’s final year as class mom is a breeze until the PTA president asks her to champion the school’s annual fundraiser, a notoriously challenging job which, as we know, is right up Jen’s alley. It’s pretty much mayhem as Jen deals with a temperamental fundraising committee, the Hindenburg of bake sales, and countless other natural and unnatural disasters that deter her from reaching her goal of raising $10,000. She is also dealing with her tenyear-old son Max, who may or may not be a fifth-grade bully. But outside of William Taft Elementary, Jen’s life is good, even if she and her daughter Vivs don’t see eye-to-eye on the whole parenting thing. She’s a grandma for the first time to two-year-old Maude who is, by Jen’s description, “delightful and delicious.” And she’s taking her love of spinning to the next level by attempting to become an instructor and finding an unlikely ally in her husband Ron’s crazy ex-wife Cindy. As ever, when life gets crazy, humor is Jen’s best stress relief. Her acerbic emails to the class parents and friendly spars with her daughter over how organic is organic-enough for baby food will have readers laughing out loud and texting Jen’s best lines to their friends.

Laurie Gelman was born and raised in the Great White North. She spent twenty-five years as a broadcaster in both Canada and the United States before trying her hand at writing novels. The author of Class Mom and You’ve Been Volunteered, Laurie has appeared on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Watch What Happens Live, and The Talk, among others. She lives in New York City with her husband, Michael Gelman, and their two teenage daughters. ADVANCE PRAISE FOR YOGA PANT NATION “Another homerun for Laurie Gelman! Yoga Pant Nation is hilarious and warm, with sharp observations and unforgettable characters. When I wasn’t laughing, I was cheering, rooting for a chaotic yet loving family that somehow manages to figure it all out.” —Byron Lane, author of A Star is Bored PRAISE FOR THE CLASS MOM SERIES “Something tells me that Laurie Gelman has been volunteered many, many times. This is a must-read and a love letter to all those underappreciated multitaskers, who just want to be left alone.” —Kelly Ripa “Gelman’s laugh-out-loud follow-up gets an A.” —People

“[A] funny, charming debut novel…With its appealing tone and a sweet mystery at its core, Class Mom offers up refreshingly likable characters in relatably goofy situations.” —Good Housekeeping “Gelman gets right to the point reuniting readers with the main character they fell in love with in her debut, Class Mom…Her antics are laugh-out-loud funny, and she shows no signs of slowing down. The tone and pacing are excellent, and new characters, who come with their own issues and snark, are delightful.” —Library Journal, *starred review* “Wisecracking Jen Dixon is back in Gelman’s enjoyable follow-up to Class Mom. This refreshing take on modern suburbia will appeal to fans of Lauren Weisberger.” —Publishers Weekly “Dixon’s emails to and escapades among the concerned parents of Kansas City have the same anodyne quality as an old-fashioned television sitcom, with a pratfall, a wisecrack, and a chuckle every few minutes like clockwork… Just add chardonnay.” —Kirkus Reviews For more information, visit: www.hudsonbooksellers.com/ book/9781250777577

will be classic Hampton’s Tate’s chocolate chip cookies and cupcakes in a jar by Baked Cravings that party goers will eat around bonfire (smores included!). Thank you to all our sponsors also including Bissel, JP Mulvey Plumbing and Heating INC, Saunders, Schmidt’s market, Southampton Limousine, Hamptons Drone Imaging and Jiade Vaia Landscaping. “I’m so excited to be able to get back together in person to raise money for the Southampton

Animal Shelter Foundation and help support the important animals they save. This year not only do I appreciate the incredible work they do more than ever, but we will all appreciate the opportunity to celebrate and enjoy what will be a great evening together on the beach.” -Georgina Bloomberg Huge thank you to our host committee and event committee. You have all been so supportive and such a great team. Our shelter is so lucky to have such wonderful volunteers. Thanks to host committee Georgina Bloomberg, Katie McEntee, Kingsley Crawford, Nathania Nisonson, Merritt Piro and Elizabeth Shafiroff and event committee Sarah Alvarez, Serena Bancroft, Elizabeth Bowden, Sara Burack, Joe Calamita, Joe Cirpo, Sara DiOrazio, Jessica Hatton, Alexandra Iadevaia, Taylor Karns, Jessica Mackin, Alexandra Maitland, James Marzigliano, Olivia Mulvey, Nick Norcia, Samantha Pace, Christine Prydatko, Rolise Rachel, Maurice Richardson, Lexie Routh, Julie Sinaw, Louise Taylor, Nicole Teitler, Sarah Vacchiano. Big thank you to all my friends for their devotion and support! Katie McEntee, director of Animal Relations at the Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation runs the shelters rescue program. Every year she goes on rescue missions to help animals in need and bring them back to safely. “It means so much to me and to the animals we save. Without donations and fundraisers like SO FETCH our program would be nonexistent. Many times, these pets are suffering from medical conditions that require expensive surgeries and we are able to provide them

thanks to our donors. Our Rescue Program is here to help those in times of desperation. We help local shelters on Long Island when they get overcrowded, or we head into the city to the boroughs Animal Care and Control centers. We rescue from shelters in the south such as Louisiana, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida and Texas. Dogs and cats are put on an at-risk list: at risk of losing their lives if another rescue or shelter does not “pull” or “rescue” them. It is a sad reality that pets are euthanized simply because there are too many of them and not enough homes. Shelters that are overcrowded are forced to euthanize a percentage of their population. They cannot support the number of pets brought to them on a daily basis. Due to the overpopulation of unwanted and abandoned pets, they are killed. According the ASPCA each year approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized in the United States. If I am to just save a couple of lives, it is worth it, but this is a problem that are a country we need to come together to fix. This cannot continue. The animals deserve better than this.” For tickets and more information, visit: www.sasf.org/SOFETCH. I

n celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Save Venice, the leading American nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the artistic heritage of Venice, commemorative events are being organized worldwide to support important restorations of masterworks of Venetian art and architecture. In place of the annual Un Ballo in Maschera held in New York each year, Save Venice is hosting “50X50,” in a global scale with 50 parties in 50 cities across the globe to toast its accomplishments. Host and Houston Native, Skylar Pinchal, along with the Young Friends of Save Venice, led by Chair of the Young Friends Steering Committee, Lizzie Asher, held a cocktail party at the Cohen House at Rice University in Houston, TX. Steering committee members, Casey Kohlberg, Christina Senia and Mercedes de Guardiola joined Lizzie and Skylar, as well as Counselor Federico Ciattaglia, Consul General of Italy in Houston, who spoke during the event. The cocktail party was attended by approximately 70 guests who donned their most festive cocktail attire worthy of

a Venetian Palazzo. Lizzie Asher, Consul General Federico Ciattaglia, and host Skylar Pinchal each gave speeches, in which Consul General Federico Ciattaglia remarked, “Houston much like Venice knows about the experience of being ravaged by floods.” Notable attendees included: Benjamin Sardavi, Ashland Hines Odom, Blake Odom, Peter Herff, Ann Ayre, Brian McCulloch, Lauren Reckling, Gillian Sarofim, Robert McNiel, Claudia Lederer Saenz, Anne Marie Soza, Catherine Montague, Sofia Leon, Christina Reckling, Peyton Easley, Mike Gassman, Grace Easley, Wilson Prioleau, Harris Pritchard, Lanie Markham. Rice University’s historic Cohen House was transformed into a Venetian palazzo. Elaborate accoutrements for the “Masks & Martinis” evening included vast murals of Venice, oriental carpets, damask-covered furnishings, profusions of candles, and towering candelabras that surrounded guests as they sipped on various themed cocktails. The event was guarded by The Winged Lion of Venice - the iconic bronze statue of the

Piazza San Marco of Venice - and guests mingled and showcased their Carnevale themed masks with the backdrop of damask patterned furniture and harlequin patterned tablecloths. The Young Friends of Save Venice is an energetic group of young professionals who share dual passions for art and preservation in Venice. Initially established in the early 1990s, the group was responsible for sponsoring specific restoration projects and for the growth of what is today known as Un Ballo in Maschera, held annually in New York.
