Welcome to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR)!
Our objective is to turn red links into blue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that, according to Humaniki, only 19.87% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed? Content gender gap is a form of systemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. We invite you to participate, whenever you like, in whatever way suits you and your schedule. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome at Women in Red!

In November 2021 Women in Red is once again focusing on women in film and stage, with special emphasis on the many celebrated actresses who performed in silent films. We hope both inexperienced and seasoned editors will join us in creating biographies and other articles about women in various countries, as well as their achievements, works, organizations, and awards. This virtual editathon allows enthusiasts from around the globe to participate.

You are of course also welcome to add articles on any other notable women, for example under our #1day1woman priority.

The main goals of the event are:

    • to encourage inexperienced editors and show them how they can contribute to Wikipedia by creating biographies of some of the world's most prominent women
    • to draw the attention of more experienced editors to the need for concerted action in combating the systemic bias against the coverage of women and women's works
    • to promote the new/improved articles and images through social media

    What else?

    • Below, you'll see a section where you can list the articles you create this month, and another section where you can add the images you have uploaded to Commons.
    • This essay on creating women's biographies and our Ten Simple Rules might be helpful to newer editors.
    • If you share any of the articles or images on social media, please indicate you have done so next to the article name.

Redlists (lists of redlinked articles to be created)

We have red-link lists on women from relevant fields and countries, which can be found in the WiR Redlink index. A selection of those which might be most useful for this priority is listed below.

These red-link lists are either drawn automatically from Wikidata (WD) or are crowd-sourced (CS).

    Works by women

    • Films directed by women (WD)
    • Plays written by women (WD)

Actresses by country of citizenship (WD)

Running concurrently is the The Months of African Cinema annual writing contest. Please feel free to list relevant creations in both places!
