Three tetrameric cobalt(II)-pseudohalide complexes have been structurally and magnetically characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 are isomorphous and exhibit the general formula [Co2(dpk-OH)(dpk-CH3O)(L)(H2O)]2A2-4H2O where dpk = di-2-pyridyl ketone, L = N3(-) and A = BF4(-) for 1, and L = NCO(-) and A = ClO4(-) for 2. The ligands dpk-OH(-) and dpk-CH3O(-) result from solvolysis and ulterior deprotonation of dpk in water and methanol, respectively. Both compounds exhibit cationic tetramers consisting of a dicubane-like core with two missing vertexes where the Co(II) ions are connected through end-on pseudohalide and oxo-bridges. A similar tetranuclear core has been found for 3 whose formula is [Co2(dpk-OH)(dpk-CH3O)(NCO)2]2. In this case, the tetramers are neutral and exhibit a terminal cyanate in place of the coordinated molecule of water for 1 and 2. The tetrameric units for 2 and 3 represent the first examples of any kind of cubanes exhibiting cyanate bridges as well as the first Co(II) compounds exhibiting intermetallic bridges through these pseudohalide groups. Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility indicated the presence of ferromagnetic Co(II)-Co(II) interactions in the three compounds.

ABSTRACT The crystal structure of the title compound, di-mu-chlorobis{[N-(2-aminoethyl)-1,2-ethanediamine-N,N',N'']-copper(II)} dinitrate, [Cu2Cl2(dien)(2)](NO3)(2) (dien is diethylenetriamine; C4H13N3), consists of chloride- bridged copper(II) dimers. Each copper ion is five-coordinate with geometry that is approximately square-pyramidal. Hydrogen bonding involving the three O atoms of the nitrate counteranions and the three H atoms of the amine groups of the organic ligand stabilizes the crystal packing.

ABSTRACT Designing new high-dimensional magnetic molecular systems built from coordination compounds has recently been a point of attention for inorganic chemists. The variety of coordination chemistry provides the synthesizers with a useful tool to build magnetic molecular architectures interesting for their properties, which arise from the interaction among their subunits. Strategies based on the reaction of appropriate terminal and bridging ligands with paramagnetic metal ions allow the preparation of oligomeric species whose nuclearity and magnetic properties may, in any sense, be tailored (1). By using good superexchange bridging groups such as oxalate or cyanide, extended lattices of antiferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic systems which show magnetic order at low temperatures have been achieved (2,3). In this way, the azido ligand represents a good choice for the design of new magnetic systems. This ligand is able to give ferromagnetic exchange interactions (through its end-on (EO) coordination mode) and antiferromagnetic ones (through the end-to-end (EE)

ABSTRACT The combined use of bpm (2,2′-bipyrimidine) and dca (dicyanamide) has led to the preparation of two compounds of general formula [M2bpm(dca)4]·nH2O. Compound 1 (M = Ni, n = 1) exhibits a 2D layered structure based on ladder-like moieties. These units, whose steps are bpm groups, extend through single dca bridges, the connection between distinct ladder-like units taking place through double dca bridges. Compound 2 (M = Zn, n = 0) consists of a 3D structure based on the same type of ladder-like moieties that are connected to another four on the plane perpendicular to the extension of the ladders.

ABSTRACT The compounds [{CuL(X)}2](X = Cl 1 or Br 2, HL = pyridine-2-carbaldehyde thiosemicarbazone) have been synthesised and structurally characterized. Both crystallize in the triclinic space group P. For compound 1, a= 7.915(3), b= 8.262(5), c= 9.016(2)Å, α= 67.97(3), β= 92.26(2), γ= 71.33(4)°, Z= 2, R= 0.046, R′= 0.054. For 2, a= 7.617(1), b= 8.451(3), c= 8.966(2)Å, α= 68.50(2), β= 95.94(1), γ= 71.73(2)°, Z= 2, R=R′= 0.035. The copper(II) ions have square-pyramidal environments with the tridentate thiosemicarbazone ligands and the halide atoms in an equatorial position. The sulfur atom of the tridentate ligand acts as a bridging ligand occupying the apical position of the symmetric copper atom in the dimeric structure. Such a disposition of the sulfur bridges is very scarce. Q-Band ESR spectra of the two compounds show rhombic signals with g1= 2.183, g2= 2.053, g3= 2.033 for 1 and g1= 2.161, g2= 2.057, g3= 2.033 for 2. Magnetic measurements on 1 and 2 show antiferromagnetic couplings between the copper(II) cations through the sulfur bridges. The exchange parameter is J/k=–6.8K (–4.7 cm–1). Magnetostructural correlations have been analysed by using extended Hückel molecular orbital calculations.

ABSTRACT The combined use of pseudohalides and N,N′-type flexible organic spacers represents an excellent strategy for the preparation of extended systems in co-ordination chemistry. In this context, the formation of two MnII–NCS–bpe systems (bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethene) of formula [Mn(NCS)2(bpe)2(H2O)2] 1 and [Mn(NCS)2(bpe)1.5(CH3OH)]n2 has been observed to be solvent-dependent. Both compounds were structurally characterised by means of X-ray single crystal diffraction and IR spectroscopy. Compound 1 consists of monomeric units where the manganese(II) ions are octahedrally co-ordinated. Compound 2 exhibits zigzag chains where the octahedral manganese(II) ions are alternatively bridged through N,N′-bpe and di-μ-(1,3)-NCS groups. Magnetic susceptibility measurements for 2 were consistent with the occurrence of weak antiferromagnetic coupling (J = −1.6 cm−1) through the thiocyanate bridges.

ABSTRACT The [Ni(pymep)(N3)2]2·2H2O and [Ni(pymep)(NCS)2]2 compounds [pymep = N-(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethylene)-2-(2-pyridyl) ethylamine] have been synthesized and magnetic susceptibility measurements (3-200 K) show the existence of ferromagnetic exchange interactions in the two complexes, with the following exchange parameters: J = +21.4, D = −7.6 cm−1 (N3) and J = +4.8, D = −10.4, z′J′ = 0.3 cm−1 (NCS). Both spectroscopic and magnetic results suggest for the azide complex a dimeric structure with the nickel centres being linked through one-end azide bridges, while for the thiocyanate compound bridging involves an end-to-end thiocyanate mode.
