Meaning of "Struma" in the German dictionary

The goitre or the goiter is a measurable, visible or measurable enlargement of the thyroid gland, independent of the metabolic position and of the fine-bodied structure or of the naked eye. Struma is the world's most common disease of the hormonal glands. The most common cause for the emergence of a goiter is an iodine deficiency. In addition to a drug therapy with iodine or thyroid hormones, the treatment options include thyroid surgery and radioiodine therapy. The term "goiter", which also refers to a sacking of the esophagus in birds, is traced back to the Indo-Germanic greup. "Greup" means "bend" and refers to the cervical veins, which are curved on a goitre. The synonym "Struma" was introduced in 1718 by Lorenz Heister and later by Albrecht von Haller into the medical literature. Die Bezeichnung „Kropf“, welche auch eine Aussackung der Speiseröhre bei Vögeln bezeichnet, wird auf das indogermanische greup zurückgeführt. „Greup“ bedeutet „krümmen“ und verweist auf die auf einer Struma gekrümmt verlaufenden Halsvenen. Das Synonym „Struma“ wurde 1718 von Lorenz Heister und später von Albrecht von Haller in die medizinische Literatur eingeführt.
