In 1951, Howard Hawks's The Thing From Another World both helped kick off a new wave of atomic-era science fiction cinema and provided the template for an enduring onscreen conflict between science and the military. This paper compares the original screenplay of The Thing to its film version and explores the changes that Dr. Arthur Carrington - the film's head scientist - underwent in the process.
