2012

Clayton's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[10]

Strengthen Education

  • Excerpt: "She understands not only that our children deserve strong schools, but also that by maintaining high standards, we attract better business growth opportunities for all of Johnson County."

Promote Local Control

  • Excerpt: "Stephanie believes in limited government in all aspects, both socially and fiscally."

Keep Taxes Reasonable

  • Excerpt: "Stephanie believes in the “three-legged-stool” philosophy of taxation for Kansans."

Protect Local Businesses

  • Excerpt: "Stephanie wants to protect businesses from intrusive, burdensome governmental regulations. The fiscal future of Kansas depends on Johnson County remaining as an economic engine, and will back initiatives that promote the county’s role in those endeavors."

Support Alternative Energy

  • Excerpt: "Stephanie believes that clean energy solutions not only benefit the quality of life in Johnson County, but also lead to increased efficiency overall. Responsible use of resources keeps costs down, and innovation in this field can also mean more American jobs."

Drug testing

Legislation passed in 2013 by the Kansas legislature introduced the possibility of punitive measures against drug users receiving government benefits in the event of "reasonable suspicion." While both welfare recipients and Kansas lawmakers were subject to drug-testing measures under the law, it was unclear as to what would happen if a legislator tested positive for narcotics.[11] Clayton expressed outrage over the uncertainty: "The only reason why I voted in favor of that was because it would hold me to the same standard. I don’t want to do to other people what I wouldn’t hold to myself."[11]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Kansas

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Kansas scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
