Race background

Incumbent Gov. Dave Heineman was barred by term limits from seeking re-election in 2014.[11] Heineman intended to back then-Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy, with whom he shared a winning ticket in both the 2006 and 2010 elections, as his successor. Sheehy's resignation in February 2013 caused Heineman to withdraw his support for Sheehy's campaign.[12][13] Days later, campaign donors reportedly began receiving refund checks in the mail.[14]

With Sheehy, the previous frontrunner, out of the race, other potential candidates emerged: six Republicans ran in the May primary.[15]

Resignation of Lavon Heidemann

Lt. Gov. Lavon Heidemann (R) announced his resignation from the lieutenant governor's office on September 9, 2014, following reports of a physical altercation with his sister, Lois Bohling. Bohling claimed that Heidemann grabbed her wrists and pushed her following a heated argument over their deceased father's estate. Heidemann and Bohling disagreed about her August 13 filing, which would have stripped him of his ability to farm two parcels of land previously owned by their father. This altercation led to a September 8 order from Johnson County District Judge Daniel Bryan prohibiting Heidemann from contacting his sister, visiting her home, or visiting their mother's home. Heidemann stated that he disputed his sister's account of the discussion, but the order led to calls for his resignation by state Democratic leaders.[16]

Gov. Dave Heineman (R) announced that he would move quickly to fill the vacancy. Heineman selected state legislator John Nelson as Heidemann's replacement on September 29.[17] Heidemann's 2014 running mate, Pete Ricketts, selected State Auditor Mike Foley as his new ticket mate following the resignation. The Nebraska secretary of state approved an appeal by Ricketts to replace Heidemann with Foley on the ballot on September 10. The deadline to name a lieutenant gubernatorial candidate was September 1, and state law does not allow names to be removed from the ballot after that date. The appeal was approved on the grounds that Ricketts had a constitutional obligation to select a running mate.[16][18]

Ballot lawsuit

Libertarian gubernatorial candidate Mark G. Elworth Jr. filed a lawsuit against Nebraska Secretary of State John Gale on September 12 over his decision to remove Heidemann from the general election ballot. In a filing with the Lancaster County District Court, Elworth cited a state law that requires candidates for lieutenant governor to be decided by September 1. Gale argued that his decision to remove Heidemann from the ballot was made after weighing a gubernatorial candidate's constitutional right to designate a running mate against the statutory deadline.[19] A district court judge ruled on September 23 that Gale's decision would stand, allowing Heidemann to be replaced by Foley on the ballot.[20]

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

You must be humble and willing to work for all people in a non-partisan way.[23]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I'm non-establishment. I've never held office and am ready to work for the people.[23]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To make sure the government works for the people.[23]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I want to help educate people on the positive uses of cannabis.[23]
What happened on your most awkward date?
I went on a blind date with a police officer. I smelled like some major chronic cause I always smell like weed.[23]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Martin Luther King day is my favorite because it's the most important of all our holidays, The message and work of Dr. King should never be forgotten.[23]
What is your favorite book? Why?
I like reading High Times Magazine.[23]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My bong.[23]

Fight for your right to party by the Beastie Boys, lol, it's been running through my head since I was a kid.[23]

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
NO, it's better if they have no experience. Our government should be ran by normal citizens like you and me. It shouldn't be ran by cronies who are in it for special interest money and power.[23]

Yes[23]

There should be a 3 term limit for U.S. Representative since it's a 2 year term, but all other offices should have a 2 term limit.[23]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I think gerrymandering is wrong and I'm proud of the way Iowa creates it's district. They cut the state into 4 parts, Southeast, Southwest, Northeast, and Northwest.[23]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Yes, I'm a member of a small 3rd party called Legal Marijuana NOW. We're located in MN, IA, and NE. I'd love to set up a 3rd Party/Indy committee.[23]
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I hear medical horror stories all day. I know many of these sick and suffering people could be helped with medical cannabis.[23]
