Maurice Portley
Maurice Portley was a judge on the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division One. He was appointed to the court by Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano in 2003 and was retained in 2006 and 2012.[1][2][3][4]
Judge Portley retired on August 31, 2016.
Portley was one of seven nominees for Governor Doug Ducey's first appointment to the Arizona Supreme Court. The governor's eventual appointee, Clint Bolick, succeeded Justice Rebecca White Berch, who retired in September 2015.[5]
Education
Portley received his B.S. from Arizona State University, graduating cum laude in 1975, and his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1978.[6]
Career
Portley started his legal career in 1978 as an attorney with the Law Offices of Gary W. Ramaeker. In 1979, he joined the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps as a judge advocate general. In 1984, he became a partner at the law firm of Jennings, Strouss & Salmon in Phoenix, Arizona. While with the firm, he also served as presiding judge in the Southeast District and then Juvenile Court. In 1991, Portley was appointed to the Maricopa County Superior Court. In 2003, after three terms on the Maricopa County Superior Court, Portley was appointed to the Arizona Court of Appeals.

Portley was retained to the Arizona Court of Appeals with 63.13 percent of the vote in the general election on November 6, 2012.[7][8]

Portley was retained to the Arizona Court of Appeals with 363,130 votes for retention and 141,694 against.[9]
- Although he is identified with the Democratic Party, a conservative organization endorsed his 2006 retention, saying, "VOTE YES - Democrat, but a good judge".[10]
