John B. Barberis Jr. is a judge of the Illinois 5th District Appellate Court. He assumed office in 2016. His current term ends on December 7, 2026.

Barberis (Republican Party) ran in a special election for the 5th District judge of the Illinois Supreme Court. He lost in the special Republican primary on March 17, 2020.

Barberis is a judge on the Illinois Fifth District Appellate Court. He was elected to this court in 2016 to fill the vacancy created by Judge Bruce Stewart's retirement.

Barberis previously was a judge on the Third Judicial Circuit Court in Illinois.[1]

Education

Barberis received his undergraduate degree from Illinois State University and his J.D. from the St. Louis University School of Law.[2][3]

Career

Before his election to the Third Judicial Circuit Court, Barberis worked as an attorney in private practice. He also previously served as a city attorney for Collinsville, Ill., as a corporate attorney for Gateway Center and as a village zoning officer for the Village of St. Jacob.[4]

2016

Barberis ran to fill the Illinois Fifth District Appellate Court seat held by Bruce D. Stewart.[5] In July 2015, Stewart announced that he would not seek retention in 2016 and would retire at the end of his term on December 5, 2016.[6] First Judicial Circuit Court Judge Brad K. Bleyer (D) was Barberis' challenger.[5] Barberis and Bleyer each ran unopposed in their parties' primaries and faced each other in the November 8 general election.

Barberis ran for election to the Third Judicial Circuit Court.
Primary: He ran unopposed in the Republican primary on March 18, 2014.
General: He defeated Clarence W. Harrison II in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 54.3 percent of the vote. [1][7] 

Evaluations

Members of the Illinois State Bar Association and other participating attorneys rated Barberis as Not Recommended for election in a 2014 poll.[8]

In order to be recommended, candidates must receive a 65 percent “yes” response when asked if they meet the requirements of office. The percentage is based only on "yes" and "no" responses; "no opinion" responses are not factored in.[8]
