Ken Ham is the founder, president, and CEO of Answers in Genesis, a Christian organization that aims to promote a creationist perspective on the world's beginnings. Originally from Australia, Ham conceived of and founded the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky, as well as the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Ky.

Career

Ken Ham was born in Australia and, after graduating with degrees in applied science and education, began his career as a high school science teacher there. He moved to the United States in 1987, and in 1994 he founded Answers in Genesis—a Christian group with "the purpose of upholding the authority of the Bible from the very first verse."[1] Ham and the organization are responsible for the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky, and a full-size Noah's Ark—the Ark Encounter—in Williamstown, Kentucky.[2]

Ham is well known for his creationist perspective on contemporary issues, including discussions of evolution and same-sex marriage. In February 2014, Ham and Bill Nye, "The Science Guy," participated in a debate which "sought to establish whether creationism is a viable interpretation of the origins of the world."[3] During the debate, Ham insisted "the creationist belief is more likely than evolution because humans weren't around to observe the evolutionary process. But he says the Bible tells the story of the Earth."[4]

For Ham, social conflicts and disagreements are all related to general cultural doubt of the Bible. In a September 2015 blog post, Ham wrote,[5]

Doubting Genesis has had horrendous consequences. It should come as no surprise that as generations are trained to disbelieve the Bible’s account of origins, they also increasingly doubt the rest of the Bible. That’s a part of the greater Satanic strategy that had its origin in the Garden of Eden. All biblical doctrines (including marriage) are founded (directly or indirectly) in the history found in Genesis 1–11. We see the direct result of this doubt and compromise reflected in the increasing acceptance of same-sex 'marriage,' abortion, and so on.[6]

On July 7 2016, Answers in Genesis opened the Ark Encounter, a replica of Noah's Ark as described in the Bible. The project cost an estimated $100 million. At the opening, Ham said, "I believe this is going to be one of the greatest Christian outreaches of this era in history. ... People are going to come from all over the world."[7]
