Gary Stevens (Republican Party) is a member of the Alaska State Senate, representing District C. He assumed office on January 17, 2023. His current term ends on January 19, 2027.

Stevens (Republican Party) ran for re-election to the Alaska State Senate to represent District C. He won in the general election on November 8, 2022.

Stevens was first appointed to the chamber in February 2003. He served as Senate Majority Leader from 2005 to 2008, and as President of the Senate from 2009 to 2012.

Previously, Stevens served in the Alaska House of Representatives from 2001 to 2003. He has also served as mayor of the Kodiak Island Borough, mayor of the City of Kodiak, president of the local school board and presiding officer of the Borough Assembly.

Biography

Gary Stevens was born in McMinnville, Oregon, and lives in Alaska. Stevens graduated from Taft High School in Taft, Oregon, in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from and reached the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Stevens earned a B.A. from Linfield College in 1963 and his M.F.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Oregon, in 1965 and 1984 respectively. His career experience includes working as a professor at the University of Alaska.[1]

Stevens served as a member of the Council on State Governments, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, and the Alaska Conference of Mayors. He was also on the board of directors of the Alaska Municipal League. Stevens was previously the mayor of the City of Kodiak.[1]

Elections for the Alaska State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on August 19, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 2, 2014. Robert "Moose" Henrichs was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while District R incumbent Gary Lee Stevens was unopposed in the Republican primary. Stevens defeated Henrichs in the general election.[6][7][8][9]
