At the time of this election, the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk did not publish school board candidate campaign finance reports online. Ballotpedia staffers requested this information, but the only free method of viewing the files was at their office.

The Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk targeted the end of 2018 to make school board candidate campaign finance reports available online for free. From that point forward, Ballotpedia began including campaign finance data for Los Angeles County school board candidates.[6][7][8]

The first campaign finance reporting deadline was September 24, 2015, and the second one was October 22, 2015. If candidates raised or spent more than $1,000 from a single source, including their own funds, between August 5, 2015, and November 2, 2015, they had to file a campaign finance report within 24 hours.[9]

A proud resident of Santa Clarita, Andrew Taban has dedicated his life to improving the lives of others. For over a decade, he has invested his time and passion into elevating multiple organizations and non-profits while also working hard to ensure that the quality of education for our students excels. While a student in the William S. Hart Union High School District, Andrew fought to ensure his classmates throughout the district would be able to have a Jr. High School Promotion Ceremony. As he advanced to Canyon High School, his drive for service did not end. He became a part of multiple organizations and groups that improved the quality of students and educational curriculum and, on weekends, dedicated his time to equestrian therapy for youth with disabilities. Fast forward to today, Andrew has proudly served as an education liaison in the California State Assembly and continues his commitment to the Santa Clarita Valley through his work alongside community leaders, organizations, and non-profits. Taban believes that every individual should be given the opportunity to reach their true potential and wants to fight to ensure every person has a seat at the table where decisions are made.

  • Representation - As a school board member, Andrew will make sure the stakeholders in our district are heard at board meetings. He believes that while everyone may not agree, coming together to hear all voices is the best method to make well-informed decisions.
  • Funding - Experiencing firsthand how budget cuts affect a student's outcome, Andrew wants to see how to secure fair and equal funding for our students, teachers, and classrooms. He will work diligently with his fellow board members and administration to collaborate on the best outcomes for everyone.
  • Student Wellness/Mental Health - The past two years have been difficult for everyone - especially our students. Taban wants to see our school wellness centers equipped with what our students need on all levels. Working hand in hand with multiple organizations in the valley has shown that a student learns better when the most basic needs are met.

Taben issued the following statement regarding his bid for office:

Andrew Taban is a long time resident of the Santa Clarita Valley, a local youth advocate, and a recent alumnus of the William S. Hart School District. Taban is running for school board because he believes there is a disconnect between our youth and our system of education. After attending numerous school board meetings as a student, it was evident that his voice and the opinions of his peers were undervalued, unwelcome and dismissed by the board. If elected he will push for an open forum where students and their parents can voice their questions, concerns and ideas to further better our education system and secure a better future for our current and future students. He has been actively involved in the community beginning at a young age when budget cuts threatened Sierra Vista’s commencement ceremony. Garnering the support of his peers and community, he was able to form volunteer committees to donate tables, chairs, food, beverages, and more in lieu of an estimated $40,000 in district cuts to assure the graduating class would walk on stage to accept their diplomas. These strategies not only brought celebrity support, but also started a media frenzy with local and national publications. Since then, he has had the honor to work with multiple groups including the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita, PFLAG SCV, and has organized educational workshops to help raise awareness of student rights in public schools. Taban has held multiple leadership positions throughout his education in the Hart District and is dedicated to hearing the needs and concerns of students, as well as community members. If elected Taban will work to dedicate his efforts to keep the students our top priority.[11]
