Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated Washington's U.S. Senate race as safely Democratic. Incumbent Patty Murray (D) won re-election in 2016. She defeated Chris Vance (R) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Murray and Vance defeated 15 other candidates to win the primary on August 2, 2016. In Washington, all candidates run in the same primary and the two candidates who receive the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election.[1][2]

  • My Top Priority: Bringing Down our Debt, Growing the Economy, Saving Social Security and Medicare: Things have gotten a little better since the Great Recession, but our economy is still not producing enough good, middle class jobs. The gap between rich and poor is growing. We are now over $19 trillion in debt. And Social Security and Medicare will be insolvent in less than 20 years.
  • A Better Alternative for Health Care Reform: Republicans and Democrats need to come together and negotiate a better alternative for health care than the Affordable Care Act. We need a system that helps those Americans, without disrupting the health care coverage for Americans who are – or were – happy with the coverage they had!
  • Abortion, Marriage, and Marijuana: The People of Washington Have Spoken: We all have personal views regarding issues of faith, morals, and culture, but liberty means Americans have the right to live their lives as they choose, as long as they don’t impact the rights of other Americans.
  • An Infrastructure Bank to Fix our Roads and Bridges, and Create Jobs: As cars have become more efficient the gas tax has declined as a source of revenue. We can raise the gas tax to fix this problem, and that would be better than doing nothing. But I think a better idea is to create a national infrastructure bank.
  • Balancing Our Need for Energy with Climate Protection: Through the use of new technology America has dramatically increased its production of energy, created tens of thousands of jobs, and has virtually eliminated our dependence on foreign oil. We should encourage more North American energy production. We need a balanced energy policy that grows our economy while addressing the issue of climate change.
