Carbon footprint refers to the total amount of carbon dioxide emitted annually by an individual, household, building, organization, company, or government in a given period. Sources of carbon dioxide measured in a carbon footprint include, fuel burned from heating a home or operating a vehicle, electrical power plants, industrial facilities, and landfills.[1]

Calculation

An individual or household's carbon footprint can be measured by calculating home energy use, the distance traveled by car or airplane, food and diet, and recycling habits. Individuals may use their most recent gas, electric, and heating bills to get an estimate of how much carbon dioxide is released in a given period.[2][3]
