Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics releasing in 2024

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics was announced. However, it turns out that this collection will also be releasing for the PlayStation 4 and Steam. Oddly, it's not available for the PlayStation 5, but the PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible with the PlayStation 4 anyhow.

The first game that's part of the collection is X-Men: Children of the Atom. Though this is just a fighting game that mostly features X-Men characters, it's the game that technically started of the Marvel vs. Capcom crossover series considering that Street Fighter's Akuma is accessible as a secret fighter.

Street Fighter 6 Director Nakayama reveals how Capcom is choosing DLC characters, and it's not based on past titles

Here in the age of post release video game development, we're constantly trying to sniff out patterns to better predict the kind of content coming down the pike. Capcom has shown some method behind their madness in the past (Street Fighter 5's initial roster was divided up by characters released across three specific games, for instance) and before the recent reveal of Street Fighter 6 Season 2, we had some suspicions that incoming characters might all hail from Street Fighter 4.

Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama sat down for an interview with Venture Beat during which he addressed Capcom's compass for curating characters, and in short, they're not doing it by game.

Street Fighter's weird approach to introducing new 'main characters' doesn't really work

We somewhat recently did a video on the main character of Street Fighter 4 and one of the most common responses we got was "I didn't know Ryu wasn't the main character of Street Fighter 4." This is an easy mistake to make because Capcom uses Ryu in virtually all of their main marketing, tends to center the story around him, and has made him the unequivocal poster boy of the franchise for the last three and a half decades.

That said, he hasn't been the franchise's main character since the late 1990's in Street Fighter Alpha 3. Instead Capcom has introduced a new protagonist in each of the numbered franchise entries since Alpha, including Street Fighters 3, 4, 5, and 6. Today we'll be going through and showing you who took center spotlight in each game as well as whether they had much of an impact or not.

Street Fighter 6 developers asked if they plan to update game's aggressive microtransaction model

Especially with the recent unveiling of Season 2 and the exciting introduction of longtime fan favorite Akuma, there's plenty to love about the way Street Fighter 6 is growing these days.

That said, Street Fighter 6 is a fighting game in 2024, which means it has microtransactions practices that leave a good portion of its user base feeling more gouged than good. Head developers Takayuki Nakayama and Shuhei Matsumoto were recently asked by Kotaku whether or not they and their team plan to change these practices at all.

The numbers don't lie, people just aren't engaging with Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1 has been out for more than nine months now and just recently saw Final Kombat play out with a 1st place reward of $200,000, but the numbers don't lie... people just aren't engaging with this game to the degree one would expect of a new Mortal Kombat.

We have said numbers from a few different avenues: Final Kombat Last Chance Qualifier attendees, Evo 2024 entrants, and Steam users, all of which see the game wildly under performing.

Why the new Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection is skipping Xbox and PlayStation 5

The fighting game community reacted very strongly to the surprise announcement of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, but some fans quickly realized they may not be able to play the iconic titles on their current hardware.

Despite the MvC collection being revealed during this week's Nintendo Direct, Capcom is also releasing the arcade staples on PlayStation 4 and Steam as well as the Nintendo Switch, which leaves out the PlayStation 5 — and importantly, the Xbox ecosystem completely.

Data miner reveals the roster for Mortal Kombat 1's unannounced Kombat Pack 2

So, what's next for Mortal Kombat 1? Back in December 2023, it was confirmed that NetherRealm Studios had already begun development on a story expansion DLC for Mortal Kombat 1 due to the success of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath's success.

Director Takayuki Nakayama mentions how Terry and Mai's inclusion in Street Fighter 6 promotes a world with more fighting games

It still feels a bit surreal to think that M. Bison, Terry, Mai, and Elena will be joining the Street Fighter 6 roster via the Year 2 Character Pass. With Terry and Mai, this will be the first time that third-party guests will be featured in a mainline Street Fighter entry.

We somewhat had a hint at this over a year ago when Director Takayuki Nakayama and Producer Shuhei Matsumoto declared themselves to be big fans of SNK fighting games. However, it turns out that the reasoning behind Terry and Mai's inclusion in Street Fighter 6 goes beyond just that.

The recent announcement of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection got fans around the world excited to finally gain easy access to these arcade classics though not everything is going to be the same as it was on the cabinets.

On top of the addition of some nice new features to modernize the compilation, it appears Capcom is going to be cutting arguably the silliest fighter they've ever made.
