Was including 2 guests in Street Fighter 6's 4-character DLC season the wrong move by Capcom?

As groundbreaking as it is for Capcom to welcome characters from outside their own universe into a mainline Street Fighter title, reactions to the inclusion of SNK's Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui as Street Fighter 6 DLC have been mixed.

MajinTenshinhan, DreamKing and I react to this move (as well as the inclusion of Elena and M. Bison) in the latest episode of Talk and Block, and actually found that our opinions on the matter have changed over the course of the few short days we've known about Street Fighter 6's second season of DLC characters.

M. Bison's gameplay trailer for Street Fighter 6 Season 2 revealed, releases June 26

Just yesterday during the Summer Game Fest 2024 presentation, M. Bison, Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui, and Elena were revealed as the characters coming to Street Fighter 6 via the Year 2 Character Pass. Though Capcom initially planned to release M. Bison's gameplay trailer on June 8, 2024 at 8 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. ET, they ended up unveiling the video significantly earlier.

Initially, no additional information about M. Bison's release date is revealed, but Capcom would then follow up with a Tweet that indicated that M. Bison would be released on June 26, 2024. That's less than three weeks from now.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics releasing in 2024

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics was announced. However, it turns out that this collection will also be releasing for the PlayStation 4 and Steam. Oddly, it's not available for the PlayStation 5, but the PlayStation 5 is backwards compatible with the PlayStation 4 anyhow.

The first game that's part of the collection is X-Men: Children of the Atom. Though this is just a fighting game that mostly features X-Men characters, it's the game that technically started of the Marvel vs. Capcom crossover series considering that Street Fighter's Akuma is accessible as a secret fighter.

Developers talk about how Terry and Mai joined Street Fighter 6 and the possibility of future guest representation in SNK titles

It's still crazy to think that SNK's Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui are joining M. Bison and Elena in Street Fighter 6 via the Year 2 Character Pass. In some ways, it feels like a collaboration between Capcom and SNK was foreshadowed as far back as Evo 2022 when posters of Street Fighter and King of Fighters characters were depicted together.

As it turns out, Capcom and SNK were in fact in talks about just that. The two decided that "This will be a good way to give them a little taste," according to Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama.

Street Fighter's weird approach to introducing new 'main characters' doesn't really work

We somewhat recently did a video on the main character of Street Fighter 4 and one of the most common responses we got was "I didn't know Ryu wasn't the main character of Street Fighter 4." This is an easy mistake to make because Capcom uses Ryu in virtually all of their main marketing, tends to center the story around him, and has made him the unequivocal poster boy of the franchise for the last three and a half decades.

That said, he hasn't been the franchise's main character since the late 1990's in Street Fighter Alpha 3. Instead Capcom has introduced a new protagonist in each of the numbered franchise entries since Alpha, including Street Fighters 3, 4, 5, and 6. Today we'll be going through and showing you who took center spotlight in each game as well as whether they had much of an impact or not.

Street Fighter's first-ever guest characters in Terry and Mai mark a big shift for the series and potential end of crossover games

After nearly 40 years, Capcom is doing something that hasn't really happened in Street Fighter before, which is really going to shake things up.

SNK's Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui were recently announced for Street Fighter 6 as the series' first true guest characters alongside M. Bison and Elena, bringing with them some big implications for the game and maybe even crossover fighters as a whole — especially holding out hope for Capcom vs. SNK 3.

'Don't worry' about Elena's healing says Street Fighter 6 Director and they considered giving her opponents a health boost too

The prospect of bringing Elena back was a scary one for players who spent a lot of time in Ultra Street Fighter 4, but that's a reality we'll all soon be living in — though the developers appear to be keenly aware of fan concerns.

Following the reveal of Season 2 DLC also including M. Bison Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui, Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama and Producer Shuhei Matsumoto recently had an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu where they talk about the first Street Fighter 3 character coming back to the roster and her infamous healing powers.

Tokido now says he won't be switching to Akuma in Street Fighter 6

Street Fighter 6 developers asked if they plan to update game's aggressive microtransaction model

Especially with the recent unveiling of Season 2 and the exciting introduction of longtime fan favorite Akuma, there's plenty to love about the way Street Fighter 6 is growing these days.

That said, Street Fighter 6 is a fighting game in 2024, which means it has microtransactions practices that leave a good portion of its user base feeling more gouged than good. Head developers Takayuki Nakayama and Shuhei Matsumoto were recently asked by Kotaku whether or not they and their team plan to change these practices at all.

With the surprise reveal of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics at the latest Nintendo Direct, the FGC of course had a lot of reactions to what they didn't see coming.
