It seems Max (formerly HBO Max) is still a bit light on genre offerings this June. This might be because they put their energy into House of The Dragon, Season 2. Or the streamer figured that adding Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the Open Water trilogy would distract us from noticing this app is not the horror wonderland it used to be. Whatever the case, this was the easiest month to find the five things I am most excited to hit play on. I have a lot to revisit, a sequel that I do not even think I knew existed, and a movie that looks extra steamy but weird. So, while it is not the glorious horror haul it used to be during the HBO Max days, it is not the worst streaming lineup.

Evil Dead (2013)
A group of friends in a remote cabin discover a Book of the Dead that leads to them battling demonic forces. This is a solid addition to the Evil Dead franchise. The timing is also perfect because Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus hits theaters this August. So, this gives horror fans a chance to refamiliarize themselves with his work and see what he has done in other established franchises. Plus, Jane Levy is an amazing final girl and was the perfect actor to help reset this male-led franchise. She walked so Evil Dead Rise could crawl on the ceiling.
Fright Night (1985)
A teen seeks help from a horror show host when he suspects his neighbor is a vampire. This is one of Tom Holland’s most beloved movies. Not only is it fun, cool, and weirdly sexual (looks at Chris Sarandon in comfy sweaters changing our brain chemistry), but it also has huge 1980s energy. I have probably seen this movie 100 times and will watch it another 100 if I get my way. This is my favorite thing to hit Max since True Detective: Night Country ended. Odds are, I am watching it as you read this streaming guide.
Krampus (2015)
A kid accidentally summons a demon for the holidays. This is my favorite Michael Dougherty movie. I promise it is fun year-round! This Christmastime chaos stars Adam Scott and Toni Collette. It is one of my favorite holiday horrors, and I am thrilled Max is adding this fun little gem this summer. I still hope this gets a sequel someday, and I am willing to risk bringing the wrath of Krampus onto my neighbors for it.
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
Alex and his son awaken a shape-shifting entity, which was cursed by a witch long ago. I am not going to lie. I do not think I knew this movie existed until I saw the Max lineup for June. However, I will be hitting play because Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh are there. Also, I was a kid who really liked the first movie in this franchise. There will also be a part of me that will always have a crush on Brendan Fraser, even if I wish I never saw The Whale. I do not expect the third installment of a franchise, which is not aging well, to be great. However, it has to be better than the Tom Cruise reboot.
The Skin I Live In (2011)
A celebrated plastic surgeon creates synthetic skin and uses it to experiment on a mysterious woman. I was obsessed with Antonio Banderas throughout my youth. I made it a point to see every thriller he appeared in as if it were my job. I also watch a ridiculous amount of Spanish thrillers. So, it is wild I do not remember this movie. I plan to do a thorough investigation while it is available on Max. I might even have to rewatch it a few times. However, that is a sacrifice I am willing to make for Antonio.

Max is also giving the fans of 90s slashers a little treat with Urban Legend. She is not my favorite film, but I do love it when women do the stabbing in this subgenre. So, I support her and everyone who will be hitting play this month. I also know many people love Uncut Gems and are probably happy to see it on something they already have a subscription to.
