message 4: by Mari (new)

Mari I am looking for a paranormal novel, not necessarily a romance, although its ok to have romantic elements. What I DON'T want is a heroine that ALL the supernatural sexy males fall in love with. Especially if there appears to be no good reason for ANYONE falling in love with them. When a book describes an average looking woman who is five foot one, slightly overweight, argumentative, emotionally guarded, not loyal to any romantic partner, unable to listen to anyone but herself, and is unfairly judgemental and then I am told that everyone is charmed by her, I stop reading. Its just that my suspension of disbelief doesn't stretch that far. Especially if the person charmed is a vampire or other long lived creature. I keep thinking, they must have met plenty of shrill, know it all types. They are everywhere. What makes this one in any way special? Its kind, mature loyal people who actually can still love someone even when that someone does something to hurt them that don't come along too often. Who would even want the kind of guy that puts up with a girl shouting at them, not listening to what they have to say, and even hitting them? Only a guy with no self esteem. NO normal person male or female ever lets themselves be hit, unless its understood that its a fight, and both are doing the hitting.
So can anyone suggest a paranormal series without the typical awful hero or heroine? Someone that is a bit more confident and kind so they don't need to raise their voice, or hit anyone just because they get mad? Or make up silly names for the big bads to try to discredit them? Or run away without hearing the whole story because they are so upset and thus further the plot?
Where its a bit more us against them and less good vs evil?
Any ideas? Or is it all exactly the same?

Sounds like your talking about the Anita Blake series.. I really like the Kim Harrison Halllows Series. Also the Women Of The Otherworld by Kelly Armstrong. Another good one with more realistic strong female characters is the Zodiac series with Vicki Pettersson. Oh, and Sookie in the Charlaine Harris series isn't ugly, and she's not annoying either, but the supernaturals do all love her... but at least she's supposed to be hot, so it makes more sense. OH and I'm reading Under Witch Moon by Maria E. Schneider and it's pretty good, so far with a very likeable, and realistic relationship evolving and a female main who's not annoying but very down to earth and normal.

Try the kitty norville series.

Loveliest Evaris That's a lot of books to sift through... Damn... Is there any good paranormal with

1. Demons
2. Angels

Where the male lead is one of those, and the female lead is either human or maybe a different "species" of mythical creature or paranormal ... entity... without the female being .. how can I say it... independent? Lol, I'm a male-chauvinistic girl xP

message 10: by Jackie (new)

Jackie So glad to find a list that isn't dominated by the crap otherwise known as Mortal Instruments and/or Twilight.

message 11: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin Women Of The Otherworld books By Kelley Armstrong are really good and i also like Keri Arthur's books. not to keen on the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris tho i feel the series has dragged on far to much cant get passed book 9 :)

message 12: by Kitten (new)

Kitten Talyn, you might enjoy the "Lords of the Underworld' series. Jackie, that's exactly what I was going for when I started this list. :-)

message 13: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Kitten: greatly appreciated! I've found tons of great stuff from this list alone :)

message 14: by Caitlin (last edited Sep 24, 2012 06:22AM) (new)

Caitlin 412 Darkest powers series by Kelley Armstrong is Young Adult
442 is Young Adult
592 is Young Adult
the 50 shades books are not Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance
584 is young adult

do people just add any book they like to every list now?

Karma♥Bites ^.~ Just a thought here so no killing-the-messenger type of reaction... but seriously, would you really consider Night Huntress, Sookie Stackhouse and Cassie Palmer series as "ADULT"? (caps used because of caption)

Don't get me wrong, I love all 3 but consider them YA (let my oldest niece borrow) as opposed to Kresley Cole's IAD series (NFW right now).

Karma♥Bites ^.~ Caitlin wrote: "...the 50 shades books are not Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance ..."

Unbelievable that they would crop up here as well. WTF?

I didn't see them on the above list (in fact, maybe I need to add them), but try the ARCHANGEL series by Sharon Shinn. Ooooh, gorgeous! Angels are real, but they're not exactly "angelic".... This book is more a fantasy (sf?) book (hence, extremely well written too) - wasn't marketed as ROM, but oooh, the love stories that are at the heart of each of these books are so exquisite. Mmmmmmm, just dreamy, sweet but piquante too. Enjoy! (I'm gonna have to re-read it myself!)

message 18: by Cynthisa (new)

Cynthisa Mari wrote: "I am looking for a paranormal novel, not necessarily a romance, although its ok to have romantic elements. What I DON'T want is a heroine that ALL the supernatural sexy males fall in love with...."

OMG!!! You are SO dead on about that! I've read so many bad PNR books where that happens. Hate that!

message 19: by Cynthisa (new)

Cynthisa ETA: soon wrote: "would you really consider Sookie Stackhouse series as "ADULT"?...."

I can't comment on the rest, but I'd absolutely class the Sookie Stackhouse books as adult. In fact, it never once occurred to me to consider them YA. I mean, I know teens read a TON of really adult (and racy!!!) stuff nowadays, but some of the stuff that gets called YA .... YIKES!!!

('Course I may be an old foggie now - when I was a young teen, we had to sneak the V.C. Andrews books and the "adult" Judy Blumes to read something "racy." LOL!)

Karma♥Bites ^.~ Talyn wrote: "... Is there any good paranormal with... without the female being .. how can I say it... independent? Lol, I'm a male-chauvinistic girl xP"

LOL! Talyn, not sure what your definition of "independent" is but take a look at Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series. Mostly vamps and angels (interesting twist on them, btw). Only thing is, female lead used to be human but now also an angel. Singh is a pretty strong writer who writes fairly substantive stories.

Karma♥Bites ^.~ Mari wrote: "I am looking for a paranormal novel, not necessarily a romance, although..."

Mari, if you haven't read any yet, highly recommend Kresley Cole's IAD series. Sounds like exactly what you're describing. Snarky, strong (yet vulnerable in some way), and all are warriors in one way or another. Plus, in some books, I like the paranormal/action better than the romance!

Karma♥Bites ^.~ Cynthisa wrote: "... I can't comment on the rest, but I'd absolutely class the Sookie Stackhouse books as adult. In fact, it never..."

Initially, I didn't consider the Sookie series YA either until my sis brought me up to speed. Apparently, the genre has expanded its targeted age range, thus having some books like Sookie series straddle the old max age of 18. Don't get me wrong, I hand the Sookie books to my sis first with certain....ah...pages clipped. So far, though, she's only censored one book (not entirely, just those pages). She tells me that Sookie books are tame compared to some of the stuff available to teens these days. And I can't dispute that, knowing what I was doing at that age ;-)

And there were "adult" Judy Blumes??? Damn, how did I miss them?!

message 23: by Teetah17 (new)

Teetah17 PNR?OWESOME GENRE!

message 24: by Heather (new)

Heather Agreed with the one above, PNR and UF are awesome genres. In case Mari is still looking for series, I suggest you try out the Greywalker series by Kat Richardson. Harper is a fairly like able character and Richardson's books tend to move far towards the UF side of the spectrum rather then the PNR, I have read three books of the series and have actually lost a little bit of interest because of the lack of romance, but the rest of the story is pretty good.

Have you read the Order of the Black Swan series by Victoria Danann? It has a little bit of everything. Love, action, murder, mystery, demons, angels, and the lot, and the whole while building the characters into complete beings, that you come to feel a part of.

message 31: by Shamiela (new)

Shamiela Simmonds Hi I love the UF genre and am a huge Kate Daniels fan! I do however find that recommendations from other readers in a forum such as this to be helpful. Could we possibly start something like that here? btw The Afterlife Series by Stephanie Hudson had me rereading all 4 books as the storyline is different but I enjoyed it!!! Please if anyone is looking for a new series to bite into, Try the first book Afterlife. The heroine is relate-able :)

Hi Shamiela! Thanks for the rec. I'm gonna check it out now! Haven't read any paranormal lately so this might be just what I need.

Stephanie I love The Hunger Games but it doesn't really belong on this list, it's YA and Dystopian (#325)
This is a great list by the way!! I'm always looking for more UF and Paranormal books to read!!

Praying they are as good!Thank u Darynda Jones for keeping someone disabled and homebound Almost all of the time entertained with your wonderfully delicious books! Kelly

Monika Hi,I'm looking for series similar to fo "Forever evermore"series by Scarlett Down (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...). It would be great if there are action and romance between shapeshifters and vampires :) thanks ;)

Jessica Mari wrote: "I am looking for a paranormal novel, not necessarily a romance, although its ok to have romantic elements. What I DON'T want is a heroine that ALL the supernatural sexy males fall in love with. Esp..."

Katie MacAlister is good too. Some of her books are paranormal, but there are a few that are not, but they are all good with normal looking girls.

OddModicum Rachel Mari wrote: "I am looking for a paranormal novel, not necessarily a romance, although its ok to have romantic elements. What I DON'T want is a heroine that ALL the supernatural sexy males fall in love with. Esp..."

I'm thinking Kim Harrison's "The Hallows" series. She's not indescriminately adored (she seems to annoy most people), and the people who love her are as flawed as she is. One of my alltime fave series. I've also recently been charmed by Charley Davidson series Darynda Jones), and whilst some men seem to fall all over her, how could you not with a heroine who names her 'girls' Danger, and Will Robinson? Plus, she annoys as many people as she charms. She's a tremendous breath of fresh air if you're stagnant with paranormal romances. Oh, and she's the grim reaper. ;)

message 40: by Christina (new)

Christina Jackie wrote: "So glad to find a list that isn't dominated by the crap otherwise known as Mortal Instruments and/or Twilight."

Glad I found this list for the same reason. I hate when I look up other books on lists and then I am disappointed to find that it is a YA novel. I know there are some good ones out there but I just have to be in the mood and that is extremely rare. I'd only read them for my kids.

message 41: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne 170. J.D Robb's "in death" series is SF mystery/crime, no fantasy involved

message 42: by Clara (new)

Clara I am looking for a stand alone or series that have a sarcastic heroine and a possessive hero.

message 43: by Cheri (new)

Cheri #50 is listed as young adult

message 44: by Cathy (new)

Cathy I am always surprised to see the Outlander series by Gabaldon listed as Fantasy or Paranormal. Ok, they time travel through stone rings to move from A to B about once a book, but that's it. Otherwise they are historical fiction. Is that just me...?

message 45: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany Lynn All the YA books that have popped up on this list... shaking my head. I rather wish there was a different way to do lists on here.

Read Molly Harper, she is the queen of gentle sarcasm and "tongue in cheekiness " The Nice Girls Don't..." series is totally hilarious.
Possessive hero, rings a bell for me, but all that is coming to mind at the moment is "the Chicagoland Vampires" set. And "the Southern Witch" has a possessive ex, but the heroine is not the sharpest tack in the box.

I absolutely LOVE the Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones. The female lead is quite adorable and it's easy to understand why others are charmed by her. Excellent writing, good story line, well developed characters.
