A new method, called the DTG curve fitting method, has been used to determine the kinetic parameters of six major plastic materials found among urban refuse: high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polystyrene, polypropylene, poly(vinyl chloride), and poly(ethylene terephthalate). This method involves first measuring the weight loss behaviour by using thermogravimetry (TG) and then using the Arrhenius equation to fit the DTG curves obtained from the TG measurement. The kinetic parameter data obtained have been compared to, and agree well, with the literature data. With this method, computer software, named “DTGsim” has been developed, for use under Windows with a user friendly interface.

The main goal of this research is to investigate the effect of nano-CaCO3 coated with different content of stearic acid on fracture toughness of HDPE/CaCO3 nanocomposite. For this purpose, HDPE/10 vol % CaCO3 nanocomposites were made using a twin-screw mixer–single-screw extruder. Nanocomposite standard samples were prepared via injection molding method. Three-point bending tests and microscopic evaluations were performed. The results of fracture toughness test showed that the addition of uncoated nano-CaCO3 to HDPE causes to decrease fracture toughness, but it can be increased slightly as stearic acid content added. Vacuum pyrolysis of individual plastics including high density polyethylene (HDPE), low density polyethylene (LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) has been performed at a final temperature of 500°C and under a total pressure of 2 kPa. A PVC sample and a commingled plastic sample composed of HDPE/LDPE/PP/PS/PVC have been pyrolyzed in two consecutive steps at 360 and 520°C in order to separately trap HCl. A pyrolysis set-up consisting of a bench scale batch reactor with a condensation train was used to collect the pyrolysis products. The main gaseous and liquid products, including the chlorinated hydrocarbons, were identified by chromatography. Global and chlorine mass balances were performed. The yields and pyrolysis product composition from each single polymer were compared with those from the commingled plastics. At 520°C, 99.55 wt.% of the total chlorine was trapped as HCl corresponding to 4.6 wt.% in yield, on an original feedstock basis, followed by 62.0 wt.% wax, 31.1 wt.% oil, 1.0 wt.% gas and 1.2 wt.% solid char residue (loss was 0.1 wt.%). The pyrolysis oil contained 12 ppm Cl on a pyrolysis oil basis. This value was less than what was expected (153 ppm) from the theoretical values which were calculated when the individual polymers were pyrolysed. The chlorinated hydrocarbons formed during the pyrolysis of commingled plastics were different from those obtained during the thermal decomposition of pure PVC. However, the hydrocarbons produced in the oil fraction were similar to those identified during the pyrolysis of the single plastics.

Undershot wheel, one of the oldest types of water-wheels, is a vertical water-wheel with a horizontal shaft which rotates by the continuous strike of water flowing underneath the wheel on its blades/paddles/buckets. Relatively simple and inexpensive to fabricate, it has been used widely in the past to generate electricity or to obtain torque to run certain mechanisms. Conventional undershot wheels made of wood used to have flat paddles which are considered to be less efficient. For the sake of its further simplicity and efficiency, an undershot wheel has been designed using high-density polyethylene pipes which are comparatively inexpensive and more resistant to water being non-corrosive and non-decaying. Additionally, it's easier to form curve-shaped blades from these pipes than from conventional wood materials, thus increasing the wheel's efficiency. Similarly, considering its applications which range from production of small-scale electricity to irrigation, the wheel has been preferably optimised for irrigation. 24 blades have been used in making an undershot wheel with a diameter of 1m and 0.5m width which was applied to run a reciprocating pump to lift water up to a height of 15 m given a stream discharge of 70.5L/s and a stream velocity of 1.41 m/s. The result was found to be promising for its broad-scale application in irrigation systems in a wide variety of water streams in Nepal, where most operators use external energy sources other than water's mechanical energy itself for irrigation. Its prospects in Nepal seem bright in terms of affordability, ease of fabrication and adaptability to a wide number of applications under varied conditions.

Blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with and without a compatibilizing agent were studied. Both materials are widely used in the soft drink bottle industry. The compatibilizing agent was a copolymer of ethylene and methacrylic acid partially neutralized with zinc (Surlyn). The olefinic segment of Surlyn is compatible with HDPE, whereas the Surlyn carboxylic acid groups is affine with the PET carbonyl groups. The effectiveness of the compatibilizing agent was evaluated using different techniques, such as infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical properties. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Sponge-gourd (Luffa-Cylindrica) agrofiber residue (LC)-HDPE composites were manufactured by extrusion and injection moulding. The effects of fiber content, fiber size, screw speed and barrel zones temperatures on tensile strength at yield (TS) point, modulus of elasticity (MOE), flexure stress (FS) and Izod pendulum impact resistance were evaluated by using a design of experiments (DOE)-24 Factorial with centerpoint. Furthermore, a model was also determined for each response variable as well as to generate foreknowledge for additional combinations of the experimental factors. The design analysis showed that the LC-fiber content is the most important experimental factor, since it significantly affected three out of the four mechanical properties studied, specifically MOE, FS and Izod Impact resistance. The second most important parameter is the LC-fiber size. Additionally, the design analysis showed that screw speed and temperature of barrel zones did not present any influence on the...
