English-medium instruction (EMI) has become an international phenomenon, but studies of engineering professors conducting EMI remain rare. Furthermore, few studies have been conducted on EMI from the perspective of Korean engineering professors. Thus, the faculty at a Korean engineering school that is leading the EMI trend among Korean universities was selected for investigation. A questionnaire survey was conducted for 48 professors in various engineering fields. They were asked how they and their students could be assisted to achieve effective EMI. In addition, statistics on the EMI classes within the school and on the professors' backgrounds related to their ability to conduct EMI were examined. The results demonstrate that even though the majority of the professors believed that many students lacked sufficient English skills to successfully participate in EMI classes, they were reluctant to encourage the expansion of English language teaching (ELT) for students. Moreover, the professors' backgrounds suggested that they themselves were in need of intensive English language training to provide adequate EMI; nevertheless, many professors were not in favor of such training. The professors' critical attitudes toward the school's EMI policy may provide an explanation as to why many had reservations about expanding ELT for students and for themselves.

The concept of person is an important issue in philosophy that has resulted in a perennial debate in philosophy in general and African philosophy in particular. In Yoruba traditional though, the concept of person has been exposed by scholars such as Bolaji Idowu, Olusegun Gbadegesin, Olusegun Oladipo, Wande Abimbola and Moses Makinde. These scholars have presented the concept of person in Yoruba thought using the tripartite argument of the body (Ara), soul (Emi) and inner head (Ori-inu). Against this background, this essay attempts a rethink of the tripartite conception of person in the Yoruba thought, revealing some aspects of the Yoruba concept of persons which are not accounted for in the tripartite conception. This essay concludes by advocating for a multi-dimensional conception of person which takes cognizance of other stages of the coming-to-be of person as obtainable in the Yoruba mythological account.

The use of English for instruction at the tertiary level of education by nations whose native language is not English has been the subject of considerable debate. This study aims to survey the attitudes of a group of Iranian university teachers at a state university in central Iran towards the possible use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in Iranian higher education, where Persian is currently the medium of instruction except in English language departments. It also explores whether teachers' attitude towards EMI is affected by their university rank. To this end, 60 teachers were randomly selected from faculties of Humanities, Science, and Engineering, and their perceptions about EMI were explored through questionnaires and interviews. The findings indicated that, in spite of the current emphasis on Persian by authorities, teachers valued English over Persian as the medium of instruction, expressing concerns mainly about inadequacies in resources and English proficiency requirements. Interview results showed that their opinions were divided as they enumerated a variety of economic, academic, cultural, social, and technological reasons both for and against the possible use of EMI at Iranian tertiary levels. The results imply that concerns over the launch of new curricula using EMI are multidimensional. Possible suggestions for future research on EMI are discussed.

En los alrededores del Cusco existen los afloramientos rocosos de caliza con derrochadores grabados en distintas formas talladas que constituyen en la reciente investigación como los elementos escultóricos de la Escultura Monumental Inka (EMI), una creación primorosa presente en Chinkana Grande y Teteqaqa, el propósito fue entender la funcionalidad de las composiciones escultóricas en estas wakas. Se registraron las formas, los tamaños y la disposición de los tallados dentro de la estructura compositiva de la EMI. Descubriéndose elementos escultóricos relacionados con el culto a los ancestros quienes aseguraban el aprovisionamiento del agua y otros conexos a eventos astronómicos. En conclusión algunas wakas o EMIs fueron proyectos políticos religiosos que sensibilizaban a la población para objetivos de catequización Inka, apreciación del agua y expresaba la promoción del poder Inka.

Science and Engineering universities have been at the forefront of a recent drive to cultivate the global competitiveness of Korean higher education through English-medium instruction (EMI). This study investigates how professors teaching Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) in this local context envision an EMI policy and the roles of the local language by means of questionnaires and interviews. Furthermore, this study identifies the types of support needed for improving EMI in a non-English context. The quantitative data were collected from more than 80 percent of the HSS faculty members of three major Science and Engineering universities in Korea, followed by subsequent qualitative interviews with nine of the respondents. The results show that while generally supporting the internationalization of higher education, the participants perceived their lack of autonomy from selection to implementation of the policy as a serious problem. Interestingly, the local language was perceived as crucial to practicing the HSS disciplines and to conducting their professional roles. These findings illuminate contingencies of an EMI policy bound by a local context which include a shared understanding of the influences of an instructional language on teaching HSS subjects.

The recent increase in the use of speed control of ac induction motor for variable speed drive using pulse width modulation (PWM) inverter is due to the advent of modern power electronic devices and introduction of microprocessors. There are many advantages of using ac induction motor for speed control applications in process and aerospace industries, but due to fast switching of the modern power electronic devices, the parasitic coupling produces undesirable effects. The undesirable effects include radiated and conducted electromagnetic interference (EMI) which adversely affect nearby computers, electronic/electrical instruments and give rise to the flow of bearing current in the induction motor. Due to the flow of bearing current in the induction motor, electrical discharge machining takes place in the inner race of the bearing which reduces the life of the bearing. In high power converters and inverters, the conducted and radiated emissions become a major concern. In this paper, identification of bearing current due to conducted emission, the measurement of bearing current in a modified induction motor and to minimize the bearing current are discussed. The standard current probe, the standard line impedance stabilization network (LISN)), the electronics interface circuits are used to measure high frequency common mode current, bearing current and to minimize the conducted noise from the system. The LISN will prevent the EMI noise entering the system from the supply source by conductive methods, at the same time prevents the EMI generated if any due to PWM, fast switching in the system, will not be allowed to enter the supply line. For comparing the results with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) standards, the graphs are plotted with frequency Vs, line voltage in dBµ V, common mode voltage in dBµ V and the bearing current in dBµ A with out and with minimizing circuits.

Although issues related to learner variables have received considerable attention over the years, issues related to teachers have not been researched as thoroughly. This study aimed to investigate the point of intersection of teachers' and learners' perceptions regarding language learning strategies. Using an original questionnaire developed in a classroom situation and based on student input, this study examined reported frequency of strategy use by international students and teacher perceptions regarding the importance of strategy use. Although students' and teachers' perceptions were not perfectly matched, results indicated that teachers regard strategy use as highly important, and there was a high level of accord (71 per cent) between strategies which students reported using highly frequently and those which teachers reported regarding as highly important, an encouraging finding somewhat at variance with the results of some previous studies. Implications of these results for the teaching/learning situation are discussed.

O artigo reflete sobre o uso do inglês como língua de instrução a partir das representações de 12 alunos de um curso de pós-graduação em Ciências Biológicas matriculados numa disciplina de escrita acadêmica em inglês ministrada em 2019-2. O estudo é de cunho misto e os dados foram coletados via questionário com escala Likert. A análise sugere que o EMI é representado como possibilidade de melhoria do inglês e do letramento acadêmico e que a falta de proficiência pode comprometer a participação/o desempenho dos alunos em cursos EMI. As representações do inglês estão ligadas à sua naturalização como língua acadêmica/da internacionalização sugerindo a necessidade de pensar no uso crítico do inglês em geral e em cursos EMI em particular.

Bilingual education for majority-language students, where a foreign language (usually English) is used as a medium of instruction in part or all of the instruction time of some non-language subjects, has emerged in the public education sector in China since the late 1990s. To date, Baker’s (2007, cited in Tong & Shi 2012) observation is still largely true that “the world knows very little about bilingual education in China”. For sake of terminological consistency in this edited volume, Chinese-English bilingual education in the Chinese tertiary education is referred to as English-medium instruction (EMI). Stakeholders’ perspectives regarding EMI, a factor impinging upon the effectiveness of any EMI programme (cf. Baetens Beardsmore 2009), has received much research effort. However, many previous studies on college students’ attitudes toward EMI unfortunately fail to make full use of the statistics generated from empirical data sources (e.g. Wu et al. 2010; Li 2012; Zhan 2012), and/or focused upon prestigious institutions with better teaching resources (e.g. Li 2012; Tong & Shi 2012). This chapter reports upon a primarily quantitative study carried out at one tertiary institution, which is less prestigious and located in a less economically developed region compared with its counterparts examined in previous studies (e.g. Li 2012; Tong & Shi 2012). The study aims to describe students’ extent of support for EMI, their perceived effects of EMI, and their English learning motivational intensity, and explore the relationships between these three variables. The data is derived from a questionnaire based on the instruments used in Wei (2011) and Gao et al’s (2003) surveys. This chapter sheds light on the sustainability of EMI in Chinese tertiary institutions by complementing the current understanding of students’ attitudes towards EMI at prestigious universities with insights from the case of a less prestigious institution; it also advocates the employment of robust statistics (Larson-Hall 2012) by highlighting the use of measures of effect size, which is as important as, if not more important than the significance level (viz. the p value) in inferential statistics (Ellis 2010; Wei 2012).

The dynamic range of a signal at the input of a measurement system during a short circuit test is increased several times by the nominal input voltage. Saturation of the measurement system may occur in a device under failure test. This paper introduces the application of a nonlinear compensation to limit the voltage range at the input of a voltage controlled oscillator which is used to produce the pulsed frequency modulation needed to transmit the analog signals over the optical fiber links. The proposed dynamic range compensation system is based on non-linear circuits to accommodate the input range of the voltage controlled oscillator. This approach increases the transient signal handling capabilities of the measuring system. English-medium Instruction (EMI) of academic subjects is expanding rapidly at universities in Japan without a clear nationwide picture of the context. This study paints such a picture with findings from a nationwide survey of 258 universities with undergraduate EMI programs (response rate 46%, n=118). The survey results cover the scope, scale and organization of EMI programs as well as showing which fields are most often taught in English. Results also reveal some challenges to EMI implementation relating to both faculty and students.
日本の大学において、専門課程の英語による教育（EMI）が急速に広がりつつあるが、全国的な現状の輪郭は明確に描かれていない。本研究は、EMIによる学位プログラムを提供する日本の大学258校を対象に実施した全国的調査によって明らかになった現状を報告する(回答率46%, n=118)。調査結果は、英語による教育が最も多く提供されている分野を示すだけでなく、EMIプログラムの範囲、規模、組織についても取り上げる。また、教員および学生双方のEMI導入に対する課題を明らかにする。

Permanent magnets may interfere with the function of cardiac pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). Neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets have become widely available in recent years and are incorporated in various articles of daily life. We conducted an in-vitro study to evaluate the ability of NdFeB magnets for home and office use to cause interference with cardiac pacemakers and ICDs. The magnetic fields of ten NdFeB magnets of different size and shape were measured at increasing distances beginning from the surface until a field-strength (B-field) value of 0.5 mT was reached. Furthermore, for each magnet the distance was determined at which a sample pacemaker switched from magnet mode to normal mode. Depending on the size and remanence of individual magnets, a B-field value of 0.5 mT was found at distances ranging from 1.5 cm to 30 cm and a value of 1 mT at distances from 1 cm to 22 cm. The pacemaker behavior was influenced at distances from 1 cm to 24 cm....

This talk has a dual purpose. In addition to mapping the use of one type of metadiscourse, viz. importance markers, across ‘native’ and ‘English Medium Instruction’ (EMI) lecture corpora, we elaborate on analytical issues related to studying metadiscourse in spoken and disciplinary discourse. ‘Importance markers’ (Deroey & Taverniers, 2012) are lexicogrammatical metadiscursive devices combining discourse organization with evaluation along a ‘parameter of importance or relevance’ (Thompson and Hunston, 2000, p. 24). In lectures, they help students identify key content, which is useful for allocating processing resources while listening to what are typically dense monologues that require processing in real time. This in turns is likely to benefit understanding, note-taking and retention.
