Dental Disease

Dental disease is considered as one of the, if not, the most common disorders seen in pet rabbits. This article provides a review of the scientific literature and an overview of the peculiarities of calcium homeostasis in the rabbit in an attempt to draw together current thinking on the cause of dental disease. A complete understanding of the aetiology and pathophysiology of rabbit dental disease is necessary for the veterinary practitioner to establish a proper therapeutic plan, prognosis and ultimately prevention of this common cause of morbidity and mortality in pet rabbits.

The erroneous claim that 50 percent of U.S. schoolchildren have never had a cavity has taken on the virtues of truth through frequent and widespread restatement. The 50-percent caries-free statement is an excessively optimistic misrepresentation by the media of the 1986-87 survey of oral health among schoolchildren by the National Institute of Dental Research because it only tells part of the story--it ignores dental disease in the primary dentition. This article documents that numerous public policy papers reflect failure to consider primary tooth caries data. Consequently, a significant disease burden has been overlooked. The article reviews the persistent underreporting of children's caries experience in policy documents and the dental literature, and reviews additional epidemiologic studies of caries reported in U.S. dental literature since 1985. The fixed partial denture produced by conventional method is greatly relied on the skill and experience of dental technician. Its quality and accuracy depends mostly on the technician's subjective judgment. In addition, the manual process involves many procedures that require a long time to complete. Most important, it does not preserve any quantitative information for future retrieval. In this article, a new device for scanning denture images and reconstructing 3D digital information of dental model by abrasive computer tomography (ACT) was designed in-house and proposed. The fixed partial denture was then produced by the rapid prototyping (RP) and computer numerical control (CNC) machining methods based on ACT scanned digital information. Abstract:  Objective:  Children are affected by numerous oral and orofacial disorders, which have the potential to compromise functioning, well-being and the quality of life (QoL). The purpose of this paper was to review the literature about children’s clinical oral health status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and to assess the respective association.Materials and methods:  The authors searched Medline, ISI, Lilacs and Scielo for articles from 1985 to 2007. The inclusion criteria were randomized, cross-sectional, longitudinal or retrospective studies that used well-validated oral health-related QoL instruments, children self-applied questionnaires and quantitative measurements of clinical oral health status.Results:  Of the 402 articles that were critically assessed, 12 studies were included in the critical appraisal of the project.Conclusions:  There is a relationship between clinical oral health status and HRQoL in children. In the studies that suggested weak relationships between children’s oral conditions and HRQoL, the explanations were low disease levels in the sample, the conditions under investigation may have caused immeasurably low levels of impact or the impacts were mediated by inter- and intravariables according to culture and education. Moreover, relationships between biological or clinical variables and HRQoL outcomes are not direct, but mediated by a variety or personal, social and environmental variables, as well as by the child development, which have influence on the comprehension about the relationship among health, illness and QoL. So, longitudinal studies are necessary to determine validity, responsiveness and minimal clinically important difference.

Both antioxidant supplementation and exercise training have been identified as interventions which may reduce oxidative stress and thus improve cardiovascular health, but the interaction of these interventions on arterial BP (blood pressure) and vascular function has not been studied in older humans. Thus in six older (71±2 years) mildly hypertensive men, arterial BP was evaluated non-invasively at rest and during small muscle mass (knee-extensor) exercise with and without a pharmacological dose of oral antioxidants (vitamins C and E, and α-lipoic acid).
