Having witnessed one New York Times (NYT) reporter, Judith Miller, cool her heels in prison for refusing to disclose her sources to special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald in a case ultimately related to the erstwhile American quest for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction (WMD), it feels ironical to review The WMD Mirage, a volume edited and introduced by another NYT journalist, Craig R. Whitney, on precisely that quest. While Whitney does not deserve to be compared with Miller (what with the latter's notoriously unethical reporting of the Iraq war), assiduous newsreaders and political analysts are liable to find his present journalistic outreach to have little intention of contracting the circle of misinformation and propaganda of which Miller has been not an insignificant source. On the surface, Whitney's volume—most of whose contents are disparately available on the Internet—is a mature (though meandering and lifeless) exercise at straightening out a complex bureaucratic maze for the common reader; in effect, it is a marketable re-packaging of the United States' (US') political establishment's position on the hunt for Iraq's WMD and on Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Walter Lippmann has been touted by historians as “the most wise and forceful spokesman for the ideal of objectivity” during the years when objectivity became journalism’s foundational professional standard. But Lippmann has also been roundly criticized as a self-hating Jew for columns about assimilation and the rise of Hitler, columns that, like all his writing, were shaped by his own, idiosyncratic belief in journalistic “detachment.” His mishandling of what was then called “the Jewish question” highlights the dilemma of weighing a journalist’s professional commitment to detachment against the contrary assertion that the best journalism “comes from somewhere and stands for something.” The full story of this controversy offers clarity about poorly understood challenges with standards that traditional news outlets and digital platforms still face today.

In this paper, I compare Norman Mailer's writing on the 1968 American Presidential Election in Miami and the Siege of Chicago to how the 2016 Election was written about by several contemporary writers, in particular Matt Taibbi and Nathan J. Robinson of Rolling Stone and Current Affairs, respectively. I show that Mailer describes Richard Nixon, Hubert Humphrey, and even Eugene McCarthy in terms that would later be echoed by these writers with regards to Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders. I broadly compare the chaos of 1968 to 2016, and suggest that we may also come to regard 2016 as a disastrous loss of nerve for the American Left, from which it may never recover.

This dissertation tells the history of (MORE), a journalism review founded and run by a group of journalists who found themselves constrained by the professional norms of their employers and their profession. In telling (MORE)’s story, the dissertation tells a part of the story of the organized press in America in the bulk of the 1970s, and some of its interactions with that decade’s cultural convulsions. The dissertation takes a historical approach, telling (MORE)’s story through the use of the magazine itself as primary text; oral history interviews with surviving editors, contributors and participants in the journalism review’s six “Counter-Conventions”; primary documents, including archival material from the records of news organizations and individuals involved with (MORE); and audio recordings of parts of the Counter-Conventions. These sources are supplemented by a body of secondary literature including contemporary news reports, other works of press criticism from the era and academic studies of press criticism and the history of the 1970s. The study of (MORE) provides insight into changes in journalistic professionalism in the 1970s, a key period after the rise of what Michael Schudson calls “the critical culture”; it investigates the role of press criticism in the functioning of the press and the effects, both direct and implied, that press criticism has on mainstream publications; it will trace some of the roots of the professional press’s increasing self- awareness in response to rampant anti-intellectualism among its members; and, using the ideas of these self-aware journalists as a guide, it begins to trace the outline of an intellectual history of the 1970s. This dissertation advances four main arguments regarding (MORE) and the national and journalistic cultures in which it operated: 1. (MORE) changed the nature of press criticism, and began its diffusion into the culture. 2. (MORE) changed the way journalists thought about themselves and their profession. 3. (MORE) influenced the way the organized press practiced its trade at a time when the industry was reshaping itself. 4. (MORE) reflects broader changes in society in the 1970s.

Book Abstract: Race News examines the political and professional evolution of black journalism in the twentieth century. In particular, Fred Carroll explores the commercial black press’ contentious working relationship with the alternative black press and its thorny interactions with a repressive federal government and hostile white media to explain how shifting toleration of progressive politics reconfigured how black journalists wrote and covered the news. From World War I to World War II, leading newspapers crafted a progressive newswriting template influenced by the racial militancy of the New Negro Movement, modernist sensibilities of the Harlem Renaissance, and communist critiques of the American political economy.
