Good information, david. I just want to clarify one thing; the elevation of Pahrump is 2550 to about 2750 feet in elevation which is one of the reasons why Pahrump gets a bit colder in the winter than Las Vegas which is at about 2030-2100 feet.

I have a totally different view then most everyone else. IMO Pahrump is a total dust bowl.. The weather in the summer is terribly hot and the wind kicks up the dust all over the town. It is in the middle of a dry lake bed and the land there is terrible. I hear a lot of people saying that there is nothing to do in Tonopah but that depends on what it is you do for fun. If you like to go out and explore then there is a lifetime of stuff to do. There are hundreds of ghost town sites and hundreds of miles of back roads. Currently I live in Beatty and I am moving to Tonopah to get out of the heat and closer to a grocery store. I am an outdoors kind of person that loves mining history and exploring historical sites so to me Tonopah is the winner.. I go to Pahrump for shopping now and I dread going into that dust bowl every time I have to go.. I would live in a condo in downtown Las Vegas on the strip before I would ever live in Pahrump.

Default Pahrump??

I can't imagine why anyone would want to live in Pahrump! IMO it's full of rednecks, backwards thinking and dirt (sorry if I offended someone). Sorry but I find nothing nice about that place. At least they finally got a hospital. The road from Pahrump to Vegas can be dangerous.

I've been to both places and I would take Tonapah any day over Pahrump.

Don't know which Pahrump you were living in (hope you've lived there for some time to be able to make such a defining comment). At the place where I've been working for a year where I interact with a good part of the public, most of the people there I've met are nice, honest, down-to-earth people.

No idea where you would get backwards thinking as to define the population of Pahrump. You have these kinds of people in every city, yet most of whom I've interacted with are some of the most open-minded people I've ever met. Very liberal. And this is coming from a gay transgender, so I've had all sorts of opportunities to be exposed to the "backwards thinking" of Pahrump, though I haven't had that happen here, yet. Curious though, I've had experienced that in Las Vegas where I'm presuming by your name you live.

One thing I do not care for about Pahrump is the lack of good medical care. Las Vegas is definitely far above Pahrump in that regard. Most of us at work call the hospital there the "death-spital" and wouldn't go there if we had anything serious happen to us. Also, the medical offices all over Pahrump are cutting back on their help and the patients are suffering because of the inferior work that unfortunately comes with cuts in employment.

Please, these two towns aren't in the same class. Tonapah can't have more than 10% of Pahrump's 30,000 population.

Hey Chinga I worried about where you were...

Pahrump would not really be an Indian Chief fart without all you rednecks and libertarians. Hell next they would want to limit smoking.

But Tonopah? Pahrump without class or facilities..and no Vegas an hour away.

I was curious about Pahrump myself. I've been 'touring' it via Google Street View and at first could not imagine why so many people live there in what looks like a barren waste land. I guess the gambling and prostitution has something to do with it, not that I'm into that, lol.

I'm from Louisiana and after spending some time in Las Vegas during the middle of summer, the low humidity of Nevada is much better than the stiffling humid sauna heat we have here. I have weather info of several places around the country on my iphone and I check them several times a day. In drier areas the 'actual temp' and 'feels like' are about the same. In the southeast the 'feels like' temp is ALWAYS much higher than the actual temp, mostly by around 10 degrees. Our 100 degree days feels like 110, and we have plenty of days like that. The dry heat of Vegas was quite comfortable compared to what I'm used to.

I do see duststorms being a problem though with very little rainfall and not a whole lot of greenery around. I haven't considered that until reading it on the forum here.

I would not mind living in Vegas if it wasn't for the houses being packed together like sardines. There's too many investers turning nice neighborhoods into slums by buying up all these houses and renting them out to people living on the cheap by packing several adults into a 2 bedroom house. They turn the front yards and streets into parking lots as each has their own car. I can well imagine how noisy it is day and night with so many in such a small area. It's starting to happen here where I live. Too many 'boom box' cars coming and going all hours of the day and night rattleling my windows. We passed a law against it but the police already have their hands full with other problems.

So I'm looking to get away from it all, and Pahrump looks kind of appealing.

No, St8kout, I'd venture a guess that the majority of people living in Pahrump do not do so because of the prostitution and gambling. I too wonder what attracts people to live in Pahrump but the vast majority of people living there that I've met are just normal, everyday people that don't appear to be frequenting the casinos or the houses of prostitution on a frequent basis. I'd guess that most of the patrons of the brothels are from out of town and there are many nicer places in Nevada where one could live if they wanted close proximity to a casino so those two reasons alone are not the reasons people live in Pahrump, IMO.

The dust storms are nowhere near what they experience in Phoenix. The wind does blow the majority of the time so when it does rain, it is a rather muddy rain that coats everything with a fine coat of muddy dust but, again, nowhere near the coating of dust that they experience in Phoenix area during those haboobs they encounter during the monsoon season. However, Pahrump has the typical wind and dust experienced in other rural areas in Nevada and the desert southwest.
