I should also specify that my statement about how it works in ND may be misleading. I meant that the only way that I see it working would be with a schedule conducive to going home every few weeks. I've heard it's not very practical to move your family there. That may change though.
I do know that in Texas it's very practical to move your family and have a normal life...normal as you can do on a 60-70 hour week that is.
Yeah thats pretty much what my friends do out there couple weeks on some weeks off... I got offered a job in williston paying 20/hour with no CDL with 90+ hours a week at a oil tool shop. Now im debating on taking that job because the guys up there are telling me of more opportunities with a CDL than without one and with a 90 hour schedule that may be hard to obtain. Extra money from tax seasons sounds like a big help for training. Just like the OP's situation.

$20/hr doesn't sound all that great IMHO....UNLESS they pay OT! Trust me....some don't pay OT...there are some weird loopholes for the oilfield...I don't get it.

As a crude driver in Texas, I'm paid mileage and commission which usually works out to $25/hr and I really don't have to do much but drive and hook up hoses a could times per night.

Most non-CDL jobs are back-breaking manual labor jobs ...especially the entry level jobs. The CDL jobs are the least work best pay and keep you further away from the deadly gasses all day. You'll still be exposed to the gasses but not for nearly as long as those working the rigs.

The other benefit to hauling crude is that when the bust comes, they may stop drilling and fracking but they still need someone to haul the crude already being produced.

Good luck guys...I sold cars once too!

I learned just how sleazy people could be....it wasn't for me....I actually LIKED my customers!

Yeah, I don't like screwing people over. My first 2 sales were low priced used cars. They got good deals.

The third was a bit risky. He had bad credit and low down payment. Took 2 days to make that deal, they added 1k to the price of the car. It wasn't my doing though.

A salesman's job is to make as much money as humanly possible for the company that employs him or her. While "Blake" from Glengarry Glen Ross is a bastard, he has the right attitude for the job. Don't like it? Then find another career. Otherwise, close. And keep closing.

People are going to come in and ruin themselves financially in order to buy what you're selling -- close them anyway. People will come in who don't really need or want what you're selling -- close them, too.

If people showed up, cash in hand, it wouldn't be "sales." It would be "order taking."

It is every man for himself. You either live or get eaten.

With that said, Do you want Extreme living on food stamps? Homeless on the streets? With starving kids?

His goal should be to sell, sell, sell. Then sell some more. Just because YOU could not make it in Las Vegas does not mean that he can not.

Exactly what I'm talking about! That's a very poor attitude to have IMHO.

Just who are you to say I couldn't make it in LV? I accomplished exactly what I wanted with my time there. However, I'm never happy for long and seek to move up and sometimes that means moving on!

Had it not been for my time in LV I would not be making the money I am now! ...And no one is getting screwed because of it!

Sorry, I have integrity and don't screw people over for a few bucks.

I guess that means I'm not a good salesperson then...Most of the salespeople I knew that had this attitude of yours were abusers of drugs/alcohol and had crappy relationships...

There are decent salespeople out there too that don't have that attitude though.

I'm going to try a couple things to see if that works.

Today I got to find out my closer is going to finance and we're on our own.
Every other team has a closer. We were trained to rely on the closer and haven't been involved in closing deals.
Basically Murphy hates me and wrote his law specifically for me.

Murphy hates everyone equally. Successful people find a way to beat Murphy. The biggest losers on Earth are the ones that Murphy doesn't screw with until later in life. Those people are so used to getting their way that they have no clue what to do the first time when they don't.

If I were in your shoes, I would put my head down and sell. Shoot for "Rookie of the Year." They want you to fill out credit apps before showing cars, fine. Do that in such a way that it doesn't scare off your ups.

Hell, I would encourage people on CD "who want to know more about purchasing cars at my dealer" to DM me. I don't know if we're discussing your dealership, but there are plenty of people (some probably right here) who want one of your trucks. Cut them the best deal possible to keep your volume numbers up. Be your own internet sales department. That keeps you near the top of the wheel. From the looks of your commission structure, volume is just as important as margin. So do what you can to pump volume.

PS -- Closing is easy. Just remember that people hate decisions but they love choices. Closing is basically the art of "steering" people into doing what you want. Your dealership sounds like a sales nightmare, but you'll do better in sales if you learn to close your own deals. There really is nothing do it, as long as you can close so it sounds natural -- not the, "What's it going to take to put you in a new car TODAY" line that every salesman seems to try around here.

I've gone to talk to 7 people today. Every one for service. It's a disheartening job.

If it was easy, there wouldn't be the huge turnover that profession has. Either decide you're going to stick it out, put up with whatever you've got to put up with, and do whatever you have to do to make money, or walk away from it. But most of the jobs you're going to find are going to have the same issues.

Ding, ding! We have a winner! The "life expectancy" of a car salesman is 6 months. It is not for the weak. Those of us who survived ended up thriving, and making an extremely nice living. You simply can't deal with the type of people you have to deal with on a daily basis and have it not either burn you out or make you hardened and resolved. And those people are both walking in the door and working there. Again, not for the faint of heart, but it, for me, was the only job where I could make 6 figures at 19 years old with no degree.

You will decide if it is your thing shortly.
