I'd be tempted too, but...

They could have tracked it to the cab. Once they know the cab, they can pull in the cabbie and question him. Also, that might be enough probable cause for the cops to get a search warrant for the guys house/apartment, even before the question him. So unless he had the presence of forethought to put the money where no one would look for it (ie, not in his residence), before he knew they were looking for him, they'd probably find it. An intelligent, experienced crook might do that. Any random cabbie? Possible, but unlikely. If they didn't get a warrant first, he'd have to keep his cool, and his denial, under interrogation. This sounds easier than it is.

Who is talking "****?"

These stories ALWAYS morph into "what would you do?" And although I would turn it in, I would certainly think about alternatives. For instance, is it technically illegal to keep something that you find in the back of a cab? (Yes, usually nobody wants the stuff they find in the back of a cab.) But what if it's a Hefty Steel-Sack full of money? Is it unlawful to pocket it? (Or in this case, lug it?)

Also, think about it. $300K in $100 bills is still a stack that is more than a foot high. That's a rather large package to simply "misplace." If I came across such a package, I would immediately assume "drug money." Even here in Las Vegas.

Yep, I'd be thinking "drug money" too. While I am an honest person, I would have been tempted to take a little off the top before turning it in.

You just hope that karma pays back someone that honest.

I don't know NV law, but under NY law, it would be illegal to keep it. I suspect NV law would be the same.

It's truly amazing what people leave behind in cabs!

As for $300k playing poker in Vegas - there's nothing outrageous or unbelievable about that. There are a number of casinos that deal high stakes, unlimited games. The winner takes the chips - or the room takes them for him/her - to the cage and gets a 1049G along with the cash - although they are always asked if they want the cage to keep it in storage for them.

As for the story being hype - I seriously doubt it. Far too many facts are in line with who, what, and where of YCS.
