My Favourite Room: ‘The great thing is you can open up the rooms and the whole place is great for parties’

As has been said many times already, the pandemic — while a disaster — forced people to take stock of their lives and, often, do things differently. Artist Ciara Bourke is one of those people. She returned to her first love — painting — after a long hiatus and, among the artworks on her wall, hang paintings by Ciara herself, just created in the last three years. She’s also busy with commissions, her work has been selected for several group exhibitions and it has raised vital funds for many charities.

To me, they’ve never gone out of fashion but seem to be very ‘in’ right now, so you’re likely to come across lots of them in charity or antique shops, often used to display lovely Victorian bits and bobs. They make for great styling tools, either on their own or grouped together with something beautiful inside, such as a dried flower, taxidermy or an ornament. Diarmuid Gavin: Mount Congreve Gardens are back in full bloom

Last week, the gates to Mount Congreve Gardens in Kilmeaden, Co Waterford, were reopened to the public after a significant upgrade and redevelopment. These beautiful gardens are situated on the banks of the River Suir. After a considerable investment by the Rural Regeneration Development Fund, Waterford City and County Council and Fáilte Ireland, there are plenty of new facilities and 70 acres of woodland and a large walled garden for visitors to enjoy.

Life’s a beach: How to get the coastal look at home

Stand on the Irish Atlantic shore on a clear day and it feels like you can see all the way to America. That’s probably why the America coastal style translates so well into Irish interiors. It’s the same ocean. At heart, the coastal style is inspired by the beach houses of the Hamptons, Long Island. The trend has recently been revived on TikTok as “coastal grandmother aesthetic”. Ingredients include: white or off-white walls; jute or sisal rugs; pale linen sofas; pale floaty curtains; piles of books; fresh herbs in terracotta pots; and handcrafted cooking utensils. A key element of the fantasy is having the time to enjoy it. Not the real world by a long stretch.

People put all sorts of certificates of merit on their walls. The academic parchments are reserved for workplaces, where they reassure new clients that the experts are who they say they are, but certificates confirming the achievement of a seemingly impossible goal — for example, the non-runner who manages the marathon — are often hung in the home. It’s not being boastful, it’s just a reminder that ‘Yes, I did that, and I never thought I would’.

How to give your home a Miami makeover

When we think of Miami, thoughts usually turn to the turquoise waters, Latin swagger and Art Deco architecture of South Beach — a melting pot of multiculturalism that swings from Little Havana to Little Moscow and pulsates with vibrant colour that has given it its moniker the ‘island playground’. Developed by entrepreneur Carl Fischer in 1915, the peninsula was sculpted from swamps and mangroves with notable Art Deco architectural lines and curves that still remain today, making it the city with the highest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the world, saving the South Beach skyline from a concrete jungle. But South Beach style isn’t all about 1920s and 1930s Art Deco. It’s also about capturing the breezy spirit of Miami in all it’s wonderful glorious colour; a cool and sophisticated mix of vintage and contemporary glam that reflects the city’s fusion of eras and cultures.
