Investment-management giant Schroders, developer Stanhope and Arney Fender Katsalidis Architects have submitted plans for what would be the second-tallest skyscraper in the City of London.
Standing 285 metres tall, the 63-storey skyscraper at 55 Bishopsgate would be just 10 metres shorter than its neighbour, 22 Bishopsgate, the current tallest building in the Square Mile.
The office scheme would include 74,000 square metres of workspace across 60 of its floors, with the upper two floors and ground floor set aside for public space.
According to Schroders, the building’s tapered design “relies on a highly efficient architectural and structural system that provides a sympathetic response to protected views across the capital”. The tower’s structural lattice was inspired by the mathematical Fibonacci sequence.
Schroders Capital Real Estate head of UK investment Nick Montgomery said: “The redevelopment of 55 Bishopsgate presents an opportunity to create a landmark, best-in-class, highly operationally efficient building with sustainability and wellness at its core.
“The scheme has been designed with the modern occupier in mind, tailoring the specification and amenities to respond to longer-term trends in working patterns by creating high-quality, flexible and resilient meeting and work spaces.”
Stanhope chief executive David Camp added: “The proposals for 55 Bishopsgate serve to maximise the creation of flexible workspace in a key City gateway location. Throughout the design process we have worked with a highly focused and dedicated design team to realise the delivery of a climate-change-resilient building for the City of London.”
If approved, the skyscraper is anticipated to be completed by the end of the decade.
