Awards for our Clinics -- and Clinical Professors

Prof. Gary Bauer: Solo and Small Firm Trainer Award, ABA's Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division.

Given to an outstanding attorney who trains law students and other attorneys in the challenges and opportunities of a solo or small firm practice. He will be honored at a luncheon in Key West, Florida at the Division's annual meeting.

Prof. Marla Mitchell-Cichon: Innocence Project 2016 Leaders in the Law in Michigan.

One of 30 lawyers in the state of Michigan selected for this top honor.

Prof. Kim O'Leary: Sixty-Plus clinic Joe D. Sutton Call to Justice Award from Elder Law of Michigan.

Honors individuals and organizations that share the mission of Elder Law of Michigan to advocate for, educate, and assist many different people, with a continued focus on older adults and persons with disabilities.

Tampa Debt Relief Clinic: Thirteenth Judicial Circuit's annual Pro Bono Award.

Given for outstanding pro bono service by an organization. The bankruptcy judge nominated the clinic for their work with low income bankruptcy filers.

Lawyering Skills »

Put knowledge, skills and ethics to work.

WMU-Cooley requires a minimum of 3 credits of clinic or externship or comparable experience.

Every graduate has practiced alongside an experienced attorney or judge, whether in one of the nine Cooley clinics or as an extern at one of our more than 2,700 sites across the nation and worldwide.

Clinical Programs »

Students in practice with faculty.

We believe students immersed in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment study and understand the law more fully and are better prepared to serve their clients. Cooley requires a minimum of three credit hours in a clinical experience. Students may apply for clinic courses once they have accumulated 40 credit hours.

Externships »

Students at work in law offices.

Lawyers across the U.S. and around the world mentor Cooley students and help them establish professional relationships.

Externships are learning opportunities for students placed with more than 3,000 lawyers and judges who provide a mentored learning environment.

At the same time, faculty members guide and assist externs.

Students may receive up to 10 academic credits for their unpaid experience.
