The PowerShot G5 X is one of the latest members of Canon's 1"-type sensor family, which began with the G7 X in 2014. It takes what made that camera appealing - namely its sensor, lens, and direct controls, and puts them into a body that adds an electronic viewfinder, fully articulating touchscreen LCD, hot shoe, and additional control dial - all without a large increase in size.

The G5 X's 20.2MP 1"-type BSI CMOS sensor - designed by Sony and first used in its RX100 II and III - performs very well and, given that the image pipeline on the G5 X is the same as its predecessor's, should continue to do so. The 24-100mm F1.8-2.8 optically stabilized lens is also the same as on the G7 X, so there shouldn't be any surprises there, either.

From a feature standpoint, the G5 X is essentially the same as the G7 X. You've got your manual exposure controls, customizable buttons and dials, built-in neutral density filter, Raw support, 6 fps continuous shooting (JPEG only), a fun star trail mode, 1080/60p video recording and Wi-Fi with NFC.

Sadly, two of the G7 X's most disappointing traits have carried over to the G5 X, namely sluggish Raw shooting performance and lackluster battery life.

There are now five members in Canon's premium compact' family: the G1 X Mark II, G3 X, G5 X, G7 X and G9 X. The G1 X Mark II is the flagship model, using a considerably larger 1.5"-type sensor instead of the 1"-types used by the rest of the group.

The G7 X is Canon's original 1"-type sensor camera, and the models that have followed are a variation on the same theme. The G3 X is the long zoom model, the G5 X is for the EVF crowd, and the G9 X is an ultra-compact model with a shorter, slower lens.

I have been using Sony DSC-HX50V, bought it basically because of 30x zoom. But found out, that it bends straight lines at the edges of the picture. Will G5 X help?

Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but a major factor in the short battery life is probably due to the touchscreen. Other devices, mainly laptops, have been shown to have significantly shorter battery lives when a touchscreen is added. The RX100iv has no touchscreen, so comparing battery life on the 2 might not be totally fair.

I have been using a Canon Powershot S110 for several years. It's a great pocketable camera with a good zoom range but, first of all, the lack of a viewfinder, distortion, the loss of image quality at 24mm and 120mm are frustating.

So, the obvious upgrade is the Canon PowerShot G5 X hoping the lens does not bend too much strait lines. The zoom range of the Lumix DMC-LX 100 is too limited I think.

But then, keeping the S110, I could upgrade to a bigger camera like the Lumix DMC-FZ 1000 or even the Nikon D5500 + 18-140 zoom.

So, here is my question : is there a big difference in image quality between the GX 5, the DMC-FZ 1000 and the D5500 so that it's worth the extra weight and the extra bulk ?

Thank you for your useful comments. I got my first camera in 1964, a Yashica Mat EM 6x6, and I am used to viewfinders. What the point to go around with a camera if you can't take pictures because you have the sun behind ! So the G5 X is the obvious upgrade. Thank you again.

Reference to the Nikon D5500. Anybody who buys a DSLR with the cheap kit lens is wasting their money. In fact such lenses should be against the law. ;-)

Had this camera a week now. I'm a pro shooter FWIW. So Far: I LOVE IT. The EVF is almost as good as optical. I use it 90% of the time. I like the EVF way more than expected. Virtually everything is customizable. Layout similar to DSLR miniaturized. IQ of an underexposed image better than 5Diii. Noise looks more like film grain than digital noise. Yes, the ISO performance of full-frame is better. No surprise. But I can shove this in a large pocket.

Feel is super solid and smooth. Lens function is good. AF is good. Not 1Div good, but plenty good for what I want.

I wanted a *small* camera that I can take virtually anywhere that can take high quality images with full manual control. I think this is it. It's a joy to hold, functions as spec'ed, and image quality so far is really good. It's been a long time since I've been so stoked about a new camera.

I've owned & shot Nikon, Ricoh, Sony, and Panny. Really like this one.

There's a reason there are so many RX100s, the ultra small size combined with excellent IQ. It's a combo that just strikes a chord with a lot of people. IMO cameras like the G5X are an inconvenient inbetween size, not small enough to be super portable and not big enough for proper handling. Among Canon Cameras the G9X makes more sense, 1" sensor, smaller size and pretty cheap.

When is DPR going to review the Canon G9 X, which was announced on the same day as the Canon G5 X? The G9 X is more pocketable, and costs less, than the G9 X.

Not a professional photographer here, just a camera enthusiast. Sold my Sony RX100 M3 for a good deal (so no harm done at all) and now thinking of getting either the G5X or going for the RX100 M4. What do you guys suggest?

Pros of Canon: Touch screen and I like the look
Cons: Might be a downgrade (?)

Unless you really need to fit that camera in your pant's pocket get the Canon, IQ is actually above that of the MIII (look at DXO comparisons) and handling difference is HUGE, the EVF is also way better than the MIV and the Canon is also significantly cheaper.

Another option is the G7X, which is basically the same camera (same sensor, processor, lens, screen, etc.) as the G5X in a smaller, RX100-like package. That is, if you don't need the EVF, articulated screen and the extra dials.

SSantana75 The G5X hasn't been tested by DXO (as of 03-05-2016) so where did you get that idea? Of course since you are a G5X owner your opinion is far from unbiased ;-)

That said the RX100IV is a better overall camera but also more expensive, probably too expensive for what it is. I think the G5x is also overpriced, just not as much as the RX100IV. If I was going to buy a camera with a 1" sensor and didn't want a pocket cam the Pany FZ1000 is the only one I would consider. It's the best of the lot and costs $700.

What kind of material is mode of for the body ? In addition, the lens is made of GLASS, not plastic ?

Sony sensor is only good with dynamic range. Color tones and gradation are better with canon sensor. That 'canon colors' are missing...
If canon make a compact with 1.5 or apsc sensor and a L marked lenses. It sure will be a hit. Still waiting for Pro-1 successor. Hope the wait will be over after a decade. Also they should bring their dslr line image processing into this. Right now canon still has powershot and dslr processing separate. Until then it will still be a 'compact camera' image.

Just because the editor of this site thinks that way doesn't make it a fact. Camera in pocket to first shot the Canon is faster, no need to pull out that silly little EVF. The image quality of the first shot taken by the Canon is absolutely better than the one you missed with the Sony while fluffing about with the EVF. Don't use the EVF? well, it is still faster to touch-shutter the canon than to move a focus point or recompose on the Sony so again, IQ better on the Canon than the non-existent Sony shot.

Took some long exposures in London with this camera. Not a bad little performer, and the in-built ND filter helps with slowing the shutter speed too.

I'm glad to see Canon inching forward. My first DSLR (three decades ago) was a Canon and I loved it but they seem stuck in the past...just like Nikon. These two behemoths need to get with the game. Sony is setting the world on fire by giving photographers what they want and need. I will not reward a manufacturer my hard earned money until they give us products that are cutting edge. Sony is guilty too. How long has Gordon Laing and other top reviewers been touting fully articulated screens? Sony is stuck on tilting screens which is only marginally better. It makes sense once you get over traditional "old thinking". Try shooting at ground level if you are a bit older and less agile without a fully articulated screen. Panasonic has led the way and Olympus has adopted it for the Em5 Mk II. Still improvements are needed. Bigger buffers, faster write times, 4K video, etc. 2015 was a landmark year for photographers. Manufacturers began to give us what we want. Lets hope 2016 is better.

In the days of film, none of these discussions occurred. There were advancements and excitement, but the camera and the film were two entities, and digital processing was expensive and film was fairly forgiving of AF systems.
Now the sensors reveal lens flaws and you have way more than a printed 4X6 to prove it. Digital processing of digital images offers an exciting new method for advancement, as well as offering a plethora of gimmicks, exaggerated claims, and unnecessary technicalities to appease the newly emboldened consumers of both the informed and ignorant variety. The interwebs offers tons of information, but no cohesive way for one to go about being properly educated. And in all that needs and priorities have been supplanted by wants and boredom and shortened attention spans.
Sony has provided competition in vaguely new ways, but in ways the market was already headed. They have done interesting things and hasty, annoying things. Canon and Nikon remain extremely relevant.

Joseph, it seems all the discussion around cameras these days is similar to what people interested in PCs discuss, speed, performance, features etc. The difference is that in that context the numbers do matter as the factors affecting them change everyday, that is games get more and more complex and textures get larger and larger as well as having more polygons on screen etc. In the real world however (where photos occur) there is no such change, days are not getting brighter, nor are nights getting darker and the dynamic range of visible light hasn't changed since camera's were first invented. Sure the technical part of photography is still highly relevant but without a doubt less of a constraint than it has ever been which can only lead to having more time to concentrate on the other side of the equation, artistic interpretation of a scene which unfortunately (or fortunately) is not something any of these manufactures can sell you, nor money can buy, it is free...just go shooting.

My the days of DP Review being accused of being Canon fanboys which used to happen on a regular basis, are long over. Nary a single camera seems to get top honors. The enthusiasts cameras are being accused of overall pedestrian handling (I agree) and the DSLRs are all being accused of inferior sensors compared to the competition. Canon is still number one in sales though, aren't they?

I am disappointed that the review doesn´t discuss comparing this camera´s 1" sensor with the G1X´s 1.5" sensor. It seems to me that is what many of us would like to delve into, and know more about.

If you check out the graph at the conclusion page with the green lines and add G1X Mark ll it shows that the G5X has better Jpegs, Raw, and is better in low light.

These 5 models have different layout of buttons and menus. Could somebody who has access to these models please enlighten us about ergonometric and advantages of each layout of mechanical features. At the end of the days an awkward position of a button makes a lot of difference. Thank you.

Its design is not typical canon. This looks like Olympus style. Retro style with vf humps is the trend. Better if canon did more modern styling.

Interesting takes... coming here a second time cause of the notifications, it doesn't look as offensive to me as it must have the first time I read the review ;-)

I guess I like pretty pictures and a pretty camera too if possible. Now if the ugly camera takes the better pictures, I will just take that...

At the moment, I'm leaning to make an A7s my next purchase. That's not overly pretty either. But full frame for well, not exactly cheap, but also not exorbitant, with a focus on video appeals to me, though a bunch of lenses could get it to exorbitant pretty quick! ;-)

Its been many years since I bought a Canon; just not the right feature mix at the right price points for what I want to do.

But yeah, I normally do like Canon's designs. The whole retro fad just doesn't do it for me. I had those old things and already wasn't particularly enamored with them back then.

To me the G5 X doesn't look that bad softness wise, but the colours are so much better IMO. I handled one in a shop yesterday and it's miles ahead of any of the RX100 series when it comes to control dial responsiveness/precision.

I'm seriously considering it as a travel camera.

The RX100 IV, at longer focal lengths, looks blurry. The III and the G5X look better, and in my eye the G5X and III are close.

Select 50mm, step down to F5.6, and look a the furthest right tower at the top of the photo. The IV looks much worse than the other two cameras.

I loved my S90 until the dog got it. I now have an RX-100 that takes beautiful photos, but is kind of awkward to use. When the grandchildren are around I find myself reaching for my wife's G-16 which I find more comfortable and fun to use. I am hoping that a G5X will have the same joy in use as the G-16 and photos as good as the Rx-100.

If size is all that matters, many will be happy with their smartphone. There are also other issues like Raw, colors, user interface, comfort in hand, etc etc.

One error. One lack of mention:

Yes, there IS 23.98p Full HD video, which is the US-friendly equivalent of 24P.

There is a very usable ECO mode which gives you battery life of around 310 shots, which is actually BETTER than the RX100 Mk IV and not bad at all considering touch screens drain more battery.

People should not be misled on these factors by this review.

You are correct about the 24p frame rate- I will update the review.

When we discuss battery life we use the CIPA numbers so everyone is on a level playing field. There is an indeed an Eco mode which comes with a few compromises in order to stretch out the battery life.

depends on what you want. You also have to take tne lens into the equation. This and the Sony have a F1.8-2.8 lens.

A Apsc camera at this price point will have 3.5-5.6 which is 2 stops slower. Or Fujifilm with a 2.8-4 which is still one stop slower.

Then the Iso advantage of the Apsc sensor is pretty much gone as you can just open up the lens and pick an Iso 2 stops lower. Yet still have that small footprint.

Unfortunately you can't mount a fast prime on these compacst to enhance it's capabilities.

Dude, f/1.8 on a 1'' sensor gives an equivalent depth of field of f/3.5 on APS-C. APS-C is 2.5X better than 1'' in low light, so that too is equivalent. The thing is you cannot change lenses on a compact and you cannot make a small DSLR. But, you can make a small mirrorless and you can change lenses on a mirrorless. Though I personally would buy this Canon if I had money to spare! Another thing is that f/3.5 on APS-C is sharp, but on this camera f/1.8 isn't. Of course the equivalent f/4 or f/4.5 on a FF is even sharper but way more expensive to be justified by the small increase of quality.

That problem at the wide-end is isolated to this Canon lens

True, the depth of field on a 1" sensor is much greater... so the 1.8 aperture point is really not valid

Conclusion: too big, way too expensive, sucks in every way possible, don't buy.

As far as looks go, I consider it one of the fuglieat camera ever.

I would buy an EOS M4 "Pro" - provided it is not larger or more expensive than M3, has a top notch EVF built-in and bests Sony A6000 in every respect: AF speed/tracking, IQ, battery charge, responsiveness in RAW, overall handling. Important: EOS, not Powershot (toy) firmware and UI.

On video recording, according to my info (the European version at least of) the camera offers:

(Full HD) 1920 x 1080, 59.94 / 50 / 29.97 / 25 / 23.98 fps
(HD) 1280 x 720, 29.97 / 25 fps
(L) 640 x 480, 29.97 / 25 fps
Star Time-Lapse Movie (Full HD) 29.97 / 25 / 14.99 / 12.5 fps

The US specs I could find are:

Full HD 1920 x 1080: 59.94 fps
Full HD iFrame: 1920 x 1080: 29.97 fps
Full HD Star Time-Lapse Movie: 1920 x 1080: 14.985 fps / 29.97 fps
HD 1280 x 720: 29.97 fps
640 x 480: 29.97 fps
Miniature Effect: 1280 x 720: 6 fps (5x speed) / 3 fps (10x speed) / 1.5 fps (20x speed)
Miniature Effect: 640 x 480: 6 fps (5x speed) / 3 fps (10x speed) / 1.5 fps (20x speed)

I can switch between NTSC and PAL to get this full range.

The review is a little misleading. There might not be 24P but there IS certainly a choice of 25P and 23.98P ... at least on some versions of the camera.

Canon is kind of quick with five GxXs while Panasonic has two, LX100 and FZ1000.

I do not see the totally 7 can beat SONY RX10s and RX100s which is too bad as it will delay SONY to release new models, sensors such as HDR on chip...

Canon here has proven that there's more to a camera than a sensor. Even with the same sensor found in the RX100 series the GX5 still falls short. What a shame the camera has the looks.

"Inching forward" is a total misnomer.

I'm ok with "inching forward", which is certainly "damning with faint praise" :-;

This "Canon f.f. defector" was impressed by the ground-breaking circa-2008 sensor tech in the 5d2. Then disappointed by the 5d3/6d. Then "threw in the towel" when the underwhelming 5ds/r was announced. YMMV.

In the meantime, another manufacturer has been making "seven league boot strides" for several years now.

Sony's RX100 is on Version IV, and they still haven't discovered the Touch Screen. :-) Seriously, that is pretty backwards.

Yes I like the sony RX100's, I have an A6000 and don't understand why they don't have a touch screen. Still good cameras though.

DPReview, would you consider adding a sensor coverage over focal length graph to fixed lens camera reviews?

To recap: some cameras achieve their focal length extremes only via dramatically reduced sensor coverage, relying on the usual digital correction to transform the image to the target size (e.g. at 24mm the FZ1000 uses approx 66% of its sensor to produce the final image; see http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/54173076).

Considering the relatively small size and wide range of the Canon's lens, I'm guessing it's for the same reason that its output appears quite soft at certain FLs...

It can be argued that the proof of the output is in the viewing, or something to that effect, but I think this metric would be useful for other reasons to do with value for money and honesty in advertising: if a camera advertises a 20mp sensor but its lens generates only 13mp of data in its rival-beating wider FLs, you could easily argue you're getting less than you paid for.

For all these P&S, I like LX100's (as well as LX7, etc) approach that crops the sensor to allow for multi-aspect shooting with all can go down to 24mm.

As far as I can see, Pana LX line are the only line being doing that. not SONY RXs, or these Canon 1" cams
