Need expert advice on shooting the sun at sunset
6 days ago

Hello everyone

This maybe a dumb question, may or may not have been asked and answer many times before, but hope to get some help from you guys anyhow.

I have been trying to shoot some sunset photos, and I have done some googling on under exposed the scene to bring out the color on the cloud etc, which was OK, most of the information I learned is only helping to bring out the color of the sky and cloud.

My question is, when looking at the sun with my naked eyes, the sun was a flat pinkish orange disc, but when look through the view finder and subsequently took the shot, the sun is always blown out.

see examples of what I am talking about below.

blown out sun, it was not that bright in real life.

The above photo was under expose by -2, when I took this photo, the sun has the color similar to the photo below, maybe a bit brighter, but defintely not completely blown out like that.

more correct sun color

This photo shows the correct sun color, I understand the sun is no longer as bright, but from what I remember, the sun color in the previous photo was almost the same as this one.

So what can I do to reduce the brightness of the sun in the previous situation?
