9 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Annabelle Wallis is in talks for the female lead in Universal’s “The Mummy,” starring Tom Cruise, sources tell Variety.

Wallis will play an archaeologist in the film. Sofia Boutella, meanwhile, is on board to play the iconic monster.

The film is set to bow on June 9, 2017.

The studio tapped Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan last summer to help develop a monster universe for Universal with rebooted versions of classic monster movies. Kurtzman is also on board to direct, and will produce alongside Morgan and Sean Daniel.

Jon Spaihts is penning the script. Plot details are vague other than the fact that the pic will be set in the present day, unlike the previous three installments starring Brendan Fraser.

Universal’s executive VP of production, Jon Mone, and VP of development, Jay Polidoro, will oversee the project for the studio.

Wallis is best known for her work in Steven Knight’s “Peaky Blinders. »

Wait, Is Aaron Paul Going To Be In The Dark Tower After All?

1 hour ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The Dark Tower is fast becoming a pleasant reality, as a string of announcements have put the long suffering project back on the road to reality. An even better sign is the possible news that Aaron Paul's lobbying during an earlier iteration of the Stephen King adaptation may have paid off, as sources claim his beloved role of Eddie Dean is in the bag. Be careful before you get too excited about Aaron Paul's possible role in The Dark Tower, as even Blastr is taking the news with as much salt as they can spare. Still, without 100% confirmation in their hands, the site trusts their sources enough to put out the good word that the New York junkie from our side of the door will be yelling "Yeah, bitch!" when he crosses over into the world of Roland the Gunslinger. Here's a quick history lesson on how we »

Nobody will comment, not until Ryan Kavanaugh’s Relativity emerges from Chapter 11 and things are made official, so take this as a strong rumor. Where are things with the plan by Trigger Street partners Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti to sell their company to Kavanaugh and spearhead a Relativity resurgence in feature film and TV production? The latest word I’m hearing is that it’s now looking shaky for Spacey — several sources say he has reconsidered — but I’m hearing that… »

‘The Mummy’ Casts Annabelle Wallis Opposite Tom Cruise

7 hours ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Every cinematic shared universe begins with a single film, and for the prospective Universal Monsters franchise, that’s The Mummy. (Well, at one point it was Dracula Untold, but Universal seems perfectly happy to forget that one ever existed, and to let everyone else forget it too.) Which is why it’s so important for the studio to get it right. […]

‘The Brothers Grimsby’ Review: Sacha Baron Cohen Trumps Political Correctness In Spy Spoof

7 hours ago | Deadline | See recent Deadline news »

With Sacha Baron Cohen, audiences know what to expect, and they get that and more in the often hilarious if not Borat-level The Brothers Grimsby, which loses the reality gags of the British comic star’s earlier films and follows a more convention plot line — if that is possible. Still, for fans of this guy’s high jinks, rest assured: The Brothers Grimsby is every bit as politically incorrect and raunchy as anything he’s done. Let me say up front: It is probably not to… »

57 SAG-aftra L.A. Members Seek to Fire Exec Director David White

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Fifty-seven Los Angeles SAG-aftra members are seeking to dismiss David White, the union’s national executive director since 2009.

The action, approved Sunday in a 57-40 vote at the SAG-aftra Local annual meeting, means that the question will go to the union’s national board — where it is highly unlikely to receive any traction. The board gave White a four-year extension to his contract in late 2014.

SAG-aftra president Ken Howard, a longtime ally of White, brushed off the vote and said the supporters were “out of sync” with the membership.

The vote, which took place during the members-only portion of the meeting, reflects the longstanding divisions between the moderate Unite for Strength faction, which supports White, and the self-styled progressives in the Membership First faction, which has only a dozen of the 80 seats on the board.

The Sunday vote was not presented as being sponsored or tied to Membership First, however. »

Film Review: ‘Tomcat’

7 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

An Austrian movie about two gay men and a cat naturally opens itself up to Freudian interpretation, but does it have to be so long? Haendl Klaus’ sophomore feature, “Tomcat,” boasts an intriguing premise: When one partner inexplicably, impulsively kills their much-loved kitty, this perfect couple are left questioning everything they knew about each other. The problems lie in the execution, with a tiresome insistence on pre- and post-lapsarian states of grace in which the lovebirds’ oh-so-perfect paradise shifts to banishment into hell. The acting and visuals are strong, the cat is great, but really, how much time do we want to spend with these people’s neuroses? Still, “Tomcat” will prowl around the gay festival circuit with its prize Teddy Award at its feet.

Life is just dandy for French-horn player Stefan (Lukas Turtur) and orchestra manager Andreas (Philipp Hochmair). They have a beautiful home with a great garden, »
