Annabelle Wallis in Peaky Blinders

Every cinematic shared universe begins with a single film, and for the prospective Universal Monsters franchise, that’s The Mummy. (Well, at one point it was Dracula Untold, but Universal seems perfectly happy to forget that one ever existed, and to let everyone else forget it too.) Which is why it’s so important for the studio to get it right. So far, things look reasonably promising.

They hired Alex Kurtzman to direct, and convinced Tom Cruise to lend his A-list star wattage as the leading man. They got Sofia Boutella to play the Mummy herself, adding an interesting gender-swapped wrinkle to the project. And now they’re starting to fill up some of the other roles. First up is Annabelle Wallis, probably best known from the U.K. TV series Peaky BlindersRead More »

thief movie

Eventually, someone is going to make a good video game movie, even if it’s entirely on accident. You something is wrong with this particular corner of filmdom when the high water mark is Paul W.S. Anderson’s Mortal Kombat, which is perfectly fine if you choose to grade it on the video game adaptation curve.

So yes, all video game movie news deserves to be greeted with a healthy amount of skepticism and possibly a raised eyebrow. Until we hear or see otherwise, let’s look forward to the new announced Thief movie with the appropriate level of dread.

La La Land

Whiplash was 2014’s little film that could: the $3 million picture took Sundance by storm, won three Oscars and got nominated for two more, grossed $49 million in all, and put director Damien Chazelle on the map as an up-and-comer to watch. No surprise, then, that Lionsgate is hoping Chazelle will be able to work a similar magic with his next film, La La Land. The studio has pushed the musical romance, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, from July 15, 2016 to December, putting it right in the thick of awards season.  Read More »

Game of Thrones Season 6 poster header

Game of Thrones thrives on big, buzzy plot twists, but some of them are better executed than others. The Red Wedding, for example, was the very best kind of surprise: shocking and devastating at the time, but inevitable in retrospect. Ditto poor Ned’s fate in season one. Jon Snow’s big season 5 cliffhanger, on the other hand? Despite the best efforts of the cast and crew, Kit Harington‘s return might be the worst-kept secret in television.

So Harington isn’t trying to keep it a secret anymore. The actor’s finally gone on the record to reveal he’ll be back for season 5… though he does not seem to have given up lying about why. Read his comments after the jump. (Spoilers ahead for season 5, plus speculation for season 6.) Read More »

Me Him Her

You’re probably already familiar with the work of Max Landis, the writer behind such films as ChronicleAmerican Ultra, and Victor Frankenstein. But now, prepare to meet Max Landis, the director. Landis makes his feature directing debut with Me Him Her, an indie comedy about a guy (Dustin Milligan) who arrives in L.A. to help out a closeted TV star buddy (Luke Bracey). The men get tangled up with a lesbian (Emily Meade), who’s reeling from a recent breakup.

The very first Me Him Her trailer debuted a few months ago, but Landis apparently wasn’t pleased with how “generic” it felt. So Landis has overseen a new cut of the Me Him Her trailer that really lets its freak flag fly. Check it out after the jump.  Read More »

Aquaman

Jeff Nichols makes his first foray into sci-fi with this month’s Midnight Special, before returning to more grounded drama with Loving. But you may recall a brief period when it looked like the director might go the superhero movie route. Way back during the Sony hack, word got out that Nichols was in talks with Warner Bros. to direct Aquaman starring Jason Momoa.

Ultimately, the job went to Furious 7 director James Wan — a fine pick, if a less surprising one. Still, Nichols was an intriguing enough choice that we couldn’t help wondering why his Aquaman didn’t pan out. Now, he’s finally gone on the record to explain why.  Read More »

hellboy 3

When the superhero movie boom eventually ends and a historian sits down to write the big book recounting the history of this genre and its impact on popular culture and the film industry, the chapter of Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy films should make for an interesting read. Here are two films directed by one of the most beloved filmmakers working today that limped out of theaters following disappointing theatrical runs, only to find their their true audience on DVD. Here are two films that demand a sequel, a conclusion, but won’t get one because a passionate online following doesn’t always translate to actual money at the box office.

Now, series star Ron Perlman is admitting that Hellboy 3 probably won’t happen. It’s time to put this pipe dream to bed.
