Transforming emergency responses to strokes
‘We knew that lives could be saved and disability prevented if stroke was treated as a medical emergency by the public and the healthcare system,’ says Joe Korner, director of communications at the Stroke Association.
Speed of diagnosis and treatment of stroke are essential in preventing disability and improving survival rates. Yet there is a dramatic difference in outcomes for British patients compared with those in Australia, North America and Europe, due to procedural flaws in British stroke services. Research also showed that the public was confused about the symptoms of stroke, often leading to delays in treatment.
As a result, the Association launched the ‘Stroke is a Medical Emergency’ campaign in Autumn 2005 to raise awareness about the symptoms of stroke and improve its treatment. Media coverage of the launch and subsequent campaign milestones meant the message reached more than 17 million people. The Department of Health has now fully accepted the recommendations of the campaign.
‘We’ve made a huge difference in pushing the Department of Health, the ambulance service and accident and emergency units to improve the emergency care pathway for stroke,’ says Korner. The campaign will continue for a further 12 months, but it is clear that the charity has won the argument.
