Yesterday, Western Digital announced plans to acquire SanDisk Corporation, a company that specializes in memory chips and SD cards. According to a statement released on Wednesday, WD will purchase all of SanDisk’s shares in a deal totaling about $19 billion; a combination of cash and stock will be paid. Read more

Phase One has today introduced a firmware update for its new XF system, announced in June. The update brings new tools to those using the XF with its Waist Level Finder, as well as a seismograph vibration delay mode. Lensbaby has announced new additions to its lens lineup with the Composer Pro II and Edge 50 Optic. The Composer Pro II houses the swap-able optic, updating the original Composer with an 'upgraded' metal body, and the 50mm equivalent F3.2 Edge optic provides a tilt shift effect slice of focus that can be moved around the frame. Fujifilm has added another lens to its X-mount, this one being a low-cost Fujinon XF 35mm F2 prime. This compact lens features a nearly silent internal AF system, 9-blade circular aperture, 2 ED elements, and is sealed against moisture and dust. Also announced is a 1.4x teleconverter, which is currently only compatible with the XF 50-140mm F2.8 zoom. It will, however, be compatible with future lenses, including the XF 100-400mm super telephoto lens expected next year. Read more.
ZY Optics, a Chinese company that sells lenses under brand name Mitakon, teased a massive lens on the Chinese social network Weibo over the weekend, the Mitakon Speedmaster 135mm F1.4. While the company revealed a few details at the time, it didn't specify when the lens would be available for pre-order. That changed on Monday, and the company is now offering $500 non-refundable deposits to reserve a unit for shipping in early 2016. Read more

Leica has just unveiled its first full-frame mirrorless ILC, the SL Type 601. The new camera uses a modified version of the 24MP CMOS sensor from the Leica Q in tandem with a Maestro II processor, allowing ISO 50-50,000 shooting, 4K video recording and 11 fps continuous shooting. With early access to a full production SL, we've been able to test it against our studio test scene as well as in a variety of real-world shooting conditions. Read more
HTC has today announced its newest member of the One smartphone family, the One A9, which slots into the HTC device line-up just under the flagship One M9. In the camera department the new model comes with a lower 13MP sensor resolution than the M9 with its 20MP chip, but on the plus side offers a slightly faster F2.0 aperture and an optical image stabilization system which could easily make it the better option in low light. Last year Leica entered the mirrorless ILC market with its T (Typ 701). And now, just in time for the PhotoPlus Expo later this week in New York the company is going big - and we mean big - with the SL (Typ 601), a full-frame mirrorless model for enthusiasts with a high credit limit. Read more
Leica has introduced the full-frame SL system, including the SL Typ 601 ILC and three compatible SL lenses. The SL uses a 24MP CMOS sensor adapted from the Leica Q, and true to form its weather-sealed body is cut from a single block of milled aluminum. Read more
Earlier this year Nikon expanded a series of F1.8 primes with the 24mm F1.8G ED, sitting alongside 20mm and 35mm models. Compact and lightweight, it hits a $750 price point that's relatively reasonable, considering the F1.4 version retails for over $2000. A picture of the Dorset coastline on a snowy day has won a UK photographer the £10,000 top prize in the 'Take A View' competition. Andy Farrer, a professional photographer from Dorset, England, has become the ninth Landscape Photographer of the Year with his image of 'Bat's Head In The Snow’. Read more
The U.S. government may soon require most drones to be registered, according to the Associated Press. Sources speaking on the matter state the FAA is working with unspecified industry and government officials to create a registration system. While the exact requirements aren't known, it is believed small and toy drones will not require registration. Read more
Sony has gradually been updating its Alpha line of full frame mirrorless cameras, and the a7S II is the latest to get the update treatment. The original a7S gained a bit of a cult following as an outstanding HD video camera, thanks to its full sensor readout, outstanding HD video, and impressive low light capability. DJI, the maker of Phantom drones, has introduced a stabilized handheld 4K video system that uses a gimbal head to produce smooth video footage. The DJI Osmo is a handle-mount with a 3-axis head that senses movement and cancels out sudden jerks and bumps to ensure the camera moves slowly and the footage looks professional. Read more
Next week sees the return of PhotoPlus Expo, the largest photography and imaging show in the United States. Held October 21-24 in the Javits Center in New York City, PPE 2015 will play host to more than 100 educational seminars, Photo Walks and Master Classes, and over 250 exhibitors displaying thousands of products. The Sony a7S II looks a lot like its full-frame Alpha mirrorless counterparts, but behind the familiar face are some important new features - namely, the ability to record 4K video internally. Sony has announced its Cyber-shot RX1R II, an update to 2013's RX1 and RX1R full-frame, fixed-lens compact cameras. The RX1R II brings a 42.4 Megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor borrowed from the a7R II, 35mm F2 Zeiss Sonnar T* lens, retractable viewfinder, variable low-pass filter and greatly improved autofocus. Read more
German optical manufacturer Zeiss has announced it is to introduce a wide angle to its Otus family of lenses designed for full frame SLR cameras. The Zeiss Otus 1.4/28 is a 28mm lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4, and will be available with ZE and ZF.2 mounts for Canon EOS and Nikon F cameras. Read more
Tamron seemed to have taken a cue from Sigma when it launched the SP 35mm and 45mm F1.8, following that company's lead in offering fast, high quality fixed focal length lenses. Lomography has introduced the Lomo’instant Wide camera. Using Fujifilm Instax Wide film, the camera offers a 35mm equivalent lens and Auto, Bulb, and 1/30sec Fixed Shutter Speed modes. Features cater to those who want to take a little more control over their instant prints, including a multi-exposure button and a lens cap that functions as a shutter remote control. Read more
The Sony RX10 II is the follow-up to a camera we already thought quite highly of. While the 24-200mm F2.8 equivalent lens and external body design remain unchanged, the RX10 II sports a new stacked sensor and can record 4k video internally, with full sensor readout. ZEISS has introduced the 21mm F2.8 to its Loxia lineup for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, joining the 35mm F2 and 50mm F2. Like its siblings, the 2.8/21 allows the user to de-click the aperture ring for video recording. Read more
Adobe has issued an apology over the 'significant crashing bug' introduced in Lightroom 6.2. The latest version of the software was released last Monday, and brought with it a redesigned import experience. That new experience, unfortunately, also introduced instability into Lightroom and removed some import functions; users reported issues with the software crashing and running poorly. Read more

US-based startup Light has officially introduced its L16, a portable device packed with 16 individual cameras, ten of which capture an image at the same time at different fixed focal lengths. The resulting photograph is a composite of all the individual images combined, with a final resolution of up to 52 megapixels. An earlier prototype of this camera was shown off this past April. Sony Corporation is to split the part of its business that makes imaging sensors away from the Devices segment that it currently comes under, to form its own company called Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation. Sony has said that the degree of autonomy that the new company will enjoy will allow it to react more quickly to changing market forces and will encourage the business to grow more quickly. Read more
Manfrotto has launched the Pixi Evo, a miniature lightweight tripod with two-section legs and five adjustable steps. The Pixi Evo represents a design update over the original Pixi mini tripod, and is designed, in part, to support entry-level DSLRs with large lenses. Read more
