The Sony Cyber-shot RX10 II offers some impressive video capture capabilities including the option to record in 4K. And like the RX100 IV, the RX10 II can capture slow motion video at 240, 480 or 960fps, the latter of which gives the equivalent of 40x super slow motion. Read more

A photographer from Singapore has created a navigable 360° video of a tour he made of North Korea. Aram Pan has set out to make a documentary that 'captures the essence of North Korea through the use of 360° panoramas, photos and videos.' Through collaboration with authorities in North and South Korea, Aram has gained extensive access to the usually closed country and has been able to tour popular sites as well as meet and photograph local people. What's more fun than fireworks on the Fourth of July? Fireworks at 960 fps. We grabbed a few slow-motion clips recently with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 IV to test out its slow-mo video modes. We had the chance recently to spend some time shooting with the Leica Q. The Q is a rangefinder-style camera that sports a 28mm F1.7 fixed lens and a 24MP full-frame CMOS sensor. We were quite enamored with the Q, both in a practical sense, as well as aesthetically. SLR Magic has introduced its HyperPrime Cine 50mm T0.95 standard lens for Micro Four Thirds cameras. The HyperPrime Lens gives a 100mm equivalent focal length and offers a T0.95 maximum aperture, black anodized finish and weighs 620g/1.4lb. Also introduced is the SLR Magic-Rangefinder Cine Adapter with an integrated focus ring. GoPro has announced its acquisition of Kolor, makers of stitching software used for spherical 360-degree videos and panoramas. Demonstrating exactly what we can expect when the two companies combine forces, the above 360-degree video has been released today, recorded with three GoPro Heros and stitched together with Kolor software. Read more

Garmin has introduced two new action cameras, the VIRB X and the VIRB XE. Both cameras feature a new form factor that increases the number of mounting options available. Both feature a waterproof design, and the VIRB XE offers support for 1440/30p and 1080/60p video recording. In addition, the action cameras feature G-Metrix, which leverages integrated sensors and wireless tech to monitor 'action data' like speed, and display the information as animated data overlays. Read more

Tamron claims that its new SP 15-30mm F2.8 Di VC USD offers prime quality across its focal length range, paired with a fast maximum aperture and - uniquely in its class - optical vibration compensation. We've been impressed by how this wideangle zoom performs in our studio, but that's only half the story. Blackmagic revealed the Micro Cinema Camera today, a lightweight professional-grade action camera with a Micro Four Thirds lens mount and a Super 16 sensor. GoPros may be good enough for your extreme family vacation and your cousin Jeremy's POV skateboard videos, but Blackmagic is counting on pro filmmakers needing more. Read on

Red has unveiled its latest camera body and announced its next-generation 8K sensor. The Weapon body will be produced in magnesium alloy or carbon fiber and is available as an upgrade for users with the 6K 'Dragon' sensor. Anyone making the upgrade to the Carbon Fiber version will then be able to pay extra to get the forthcoming 8K sensor. Read more

Canon's new XC10 is the first product we've seen which is neither a stills camera with a video feature or a video camera that can capture stills. In terms of both specification and ergonomics it is a true 'convergence' product with the potential to shake up more than one market segment. Canon has announced the EOS C300 Mark II Cinema EOS camera, updating its predecessor with a new 8.85 megapixel 35mm sensor allowing 4K shooting. Also new are Dual DIGIC DV5 processors bringing the ability to record 10-bit 4:2:2 4K (UHD or DCI) video internally thanks using the new XF-AVC Codec. Read more

On March 27, Samyang and Rokinon teased a new lens on Facebook, saying that it would offer 'immense focus and unparalleled features'. That lens was officially introduced today, and it's a 100mm f2.8 Macro offering with 1:1 magnification and a 1ft. minimum focusing distance. Though it won't be shipping until next month, the lens is available to pre-order from retailers now. Read more

Atomos has released a major firmware update to the Atomos Shogun 4K external video recorder. The Shogun, already popular among filmmakers and professional videographers thanks to its 4K 10-bit ProRes recording capabilities, gains several important features that should appeal to motion picture shooters. The update, dubbed AtomOS6.2, adds important features such as 3D LUTs and Avid DNxHR/DNxHD recording formats. Read more

Livestream has introduced its new Broadcaster mini device for live-streaming video directly from a camera. The dongle is compatible with any camera that offers a mini HDMI port, and works wirelessly in conjunction with Android/iOS devices and Livestream's Studio software. The Broadcaster mini will be joined by the Broadcaster Pro next month, which will offer longer battery life, more connectivity options and higher-quality streaming. Read more

The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute has created an open source camera system for use underwater to aid in research projects. The rig is composed of a GoPro camera and other easily sourced components, and is cheaper than commercially available oceanographic camera systems. Learn more

Australian microphone maker RØDE has announced a new digital wireless system called RØDELink. It uses 2.4GHz transmission with 128-bit encryption while transmitting on two channels simultaneously. The system can monitor and change frequencies as needed to maintain the strongest signal, transmitting a 24-bit/44.1k signal up to 100 meters. The first product based on the system, the RØDELink Filmmaker Kit, will be of interest to digital filmmakers. Read more

The X-T1 is Fujifilm's first weather-resistant interchangeable X-series camera. It is built around a 16.3 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor housed in a die-cast magnesium body. Offering a traditional design with five physical top plate dials, two command dials, and six programmable function buttons the X-T1 also has a high resolution OLED viewfinder. The D750 is Nikon's enthusiast-oriented full-frame DSLR, featuring a 24MP sensor and a raft of high-end features borrowed from the D810 and D4S. These include a tweaked version of their highly capable 51-point AF system and a very solid HD video specification. As often as we can, we like to put the cameras that we test into the hands of working photographers to find out what they think. Recently we gave the Samsung NX1 to Jordan Stead, staff photographer at SeattlePI.com, and ventured out to nearby Carkeek Park to photograph the salmon run. JVC has introduced the GY-LS300 4KCAM Handheld S35mm camcorder, a relatively compact Micro Four Thirds model featuring Ultra HD-resolution 4K recording. JVC has incorporated a Super 35mm CMOS sensor alongside the MFT lens mount, with the maker promising full native angle of view via its proprietary Variable Scan Mapping tech. Read more

Canon has announced the upcoming release of its second-generation EOS C100 Mark II digital video camera. The device houses a Super 35mm 8.3 megapixel CMOS sensor, and is positioned as an affordable solution for film and video production, providing a variety of new design and performance upgrades. Read more

How does the idea of capturing 100 19MP Raw files per second sound? That's what RED's latest camera, the RED Dragon can do, courtesy of its 6K video capture mode. Fully modular, the RED Dragon can be adapted to accept a multitude of lens mounts, and although intended for professional movie shooting, its still image quality is seriously impressive too. Blackmagic Design has announced the addition of two new PL mount options to its line of professional motion picture cameras. The Production Camera 4K and Cinema Camera are now available with a PL mount, complementing existing EF and passive Micro Four Thirds models. Read more

Canon USA has released a video explaining how to take care of your camera gear. In the video, hosted by Holly Groder of Canon's call center, Canon gives a series of recommendations for things to avoid, and things to get into the habit of doing, to keep your gear clean and fully functional. If you mentally delete the word 'Canon' from every other sentence there's plenty of sensible advice for caring for your gear - whatever the manufacturer. Click through to see the video.
