Callahan and Rangers on Sean Avery: 'He did not speak for us as a team when he was here and certainly does not now'

Shut your yap, Avery.

Captain Ryan Callahan and his teammates essentially echoed John Tortorella’s famous phrase when they fired back in a statement Sunday at ex-teammate Sean Avery for Avery’s Saturday night tweet that the team should “fire this CLOWN,” referring to Tortorella.

“Sean Avery’s comments solely represent his own thoughts and opinions,” read the statement that the team said represented the view of all 23 players. “He did not speak for us as a team when he was here and certainly does not now.”

Avery’s full tweet on his account @imseanavery, five minutes after the Rangers’ 3-0 shutout loss to Montreal on Saturday night, read: “Fire this CLOWN. His players hate him and wont play for his BS…. @imseanavery is #winning.”

But Rangers center Derek Stepan defended Tortorella in comments to the Daily News, despite the Blueshirts barely clinging to the eighth and final playoff seed in the Eastern Conference with a middling 16-15-3 record.

Martin Biron starts for Rangers vs. Montreal Canadiens, Mats Zuccarello makes season debut, Brian Boyle more comfortable at wing

MONTREAL – Martin Biron didn’t conduct his typical, French-English pregame morning interview session in Montreal, as even the most loquacious Rangers buckle down and focus with 15 games remaining on the desperate task at hand.

“It was disappointing we didn’t come back (in Ottawa) with the same type of team game,” John Tortorella said at the Bell Centre, where the Rangers haven’t won in four years, “but defensively and offensively after Philly, I thought that was more of a game that we can play. And it’s more of a game that we have to play, or we will be done.”

Can’t say it more simply than that.

Tortorella is inserting recently resigned Norwegian winger Mats Zuccarello into the lineup and encouraging the offensive-minded forward to be “instinctive.”

TORTORELLA HASN'T GIVEN UP ON STRUGGLING GABORIK

“We’re not going to give him much direction,” Tortorella said. “We can give direction as far as our breakout, whatever it may be, but we’re looking for instinctive, and we’re hoping he can help us there.”

Told of Tortorella’s loosening the reins, Zuccarello had a humorous but honest and realistic response.

“I don’t think he means that I can go out and do whatever I want,” Zuccarello, 25, said. “But I just have to stick with the system and if I see a play, try to make that play, try not to force it. I’m not going to come back and think that I’m gonna score three goals and be the savior. I just have to play my game and make a play if it’s there to make.”

Marian Gaborik demoted to fourth line in practice, chats with John Tortorella; Mats Zuccarello playing vs. Montreal Canadiens

OTTAWA – Two significant pieces of news from the Rangers’ off-day practice at The Ice House at Carleton University in Canada’s capital:

1. John Tortorella and Marian Gaborik had a long, approximately 10-to-12 minute on-ice conversation late in practice, after the coach’s lines showed Gaborik on the fourth line with Taylor Pyatt and Kris Newbury.

“We had a good conversation, but that’s it,” Gaborik said afterward. “That’s all I’m gonna say.”

“I’ll have no discussions regarding my discussions with the players,” Tortorella said. “Please.”

And

2. As Tortorella said, “Zook’s playing tomorrow.” In other words, recently-resigned 5-7 Norwegian forward Mats Zuccarello will return to the lineup in Montreal on Saturday night.

“I mean it’s all about hard work, getting some wins and trying to create some offense,” said Zuccarello, who signed on Thursday but sat out that night’s 3-0 shutout loss to the Senators at Scotiabank Place.

The coach said he didn’t know what lines he would use against the Canadiens, but here is the lineup he showed during Friday’s practice:

Forwards: Carl Hagelin-Derek Stepan-Rick Nash, Brian Boyle-J.T. Miller-Ryan Callahan, Chris Kreider-Brad Richards-Mats Zuccarello, Taylor Pyatt-Kris Newbury-Marian Gaborik … Defensemen: Michael Del Zotto-Dan Girardi, Ryan McDonagh-Steve Eminger, Roman Hamrlik-Anton Stralman.

Crushed Ice: Henrik Lundqvist flustered again by poor NY Rangers showing; quotes from Tortorella, Nash, Girardi, Callahan

OTTAWA – The Rangers are 4-11-1 against Eastern Conference playoff teams, and in the next eight days they will face the Montreal Canadiens, the Winnipeg Jets, and the Pittsburgh Penguins twice. New York is 0-7-0 combined against those clubs this season.

On top of being shutout, 3-0, by the Senators on Thursday night at Scotiabank Place, the bleak road ahead likely contributed to Henrik Lundqvist’s frustration after this loss.

“I don’t know what to say,” Lundqvist said. “I have a few thoughts but I don’t think it’s going to help our group right now. Bottom line is, it’s not good enough and we’re not going to make it if … We need everybody right now. We need top player and smart plays for 60 minutes. We’re playing teams that are working really hard and we have to match it. If we’re not matching it, we’re not going to win.”

Lundqvist made 26 saves, several of which would have swung the momentum in the Rangers’ favor if they had ever had the ability and awareness to grab ahold of it.

“Hank played out of his head tonight for sure and gave us a chance,” defenseman Ryan McDonagh said. “Unfortunately, we can’t salvage a point or two.”

Mats Zuccarello officially signs with NY Rangers, says 'this is where I want to be,' but will not play vs. Ottawa Senators

OTTAWA – The Hobbit’s sequel with the Rangers won’t begin for at least another few days, but Mats Zuccarello was content being back in a blue jersey on Thursday morning at Scotiabank Place – even while bag-skating as a healthy scratch following his official re-signing with the team.

“It’s a great feeling,” Zuccarello said Thursday morning at his locker, standing a bit taller in skates than his listed 5-7. “It was something I wanted to do, and when I got the chance it was a pretty easy choice.”

The diminutive 25-year-old Norwegian playmaker played this past full season in the Kontinental Hockey League for Metallurg Magnitogorsk, leaving the Rangers after last season when he said that spending most of the year in the AHL and playing just 10 NHL games was “not enough for me.”

“I wasn’t thinking about (returning to the Rangers) when I left,” Zuccarello admitted on Thursday, “but when I heard there was interest, I was happy about that, and it was a quick choice.”

Zuccarello has signed a one-way contract – he insisted on it – to remain with the Rangers for the remainder of this season for the pro-rated amount of a $700,000 annual salary, which by my calculation is about $137,000 for the 16 regular-season games he will be on the roster.

He had played the first year of a two-year deal with Metallurg but said on Thursday that his contract with the KHL club now is terminated. So after this season, Zuccarello will be a restricted free agent and again will face the scenario he did last spring – re-sign with the Rangers or ink a new deal with a KHL club such as Metallurg.

Pittsburgh Penguins acquire Jarome Iginla from Calgary Flames in trade twist hours after reports had him going to Boston Bruins

OTTAWA – The Pittsburgh Penguins are going all-in for a Stanley Cup run this spring, topped off by Thursday morning’s Iggy Shuffle.

Early Thursday, the Penguins acquired Calgary Flames captain Jarome Iginla, 35, in exchange for prospects Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski, plus the Penguins’ 2013 first-round draft pick.

Iginla waived his no-trade clause to join the Penguins (26-8-0, 52 points), who sit atop the Eastern Conference and in the past five days also have acquired Dallas Stars veteran winger Brenden Morrow and San Jose Sharks depth defenseman Douglas Murray in separate trades to beef up their roster.

RANGERS OFFENSE FINDS ANOTHER GEAR ON LATE KREIDER GOAL VS. FLYERS

None of the players the Penguins have acquired carry contracts beyond this season, when NHL teams must eliminate salaries in fit under the salary cap that will shrink from $70.2 million this season to $64.3 in 2013-14.

Pittsburgh’s acquisition of Iginla completed a dramatic and unexpected twist early Thursday morning.

Reports on Wednesday night had Iginla going to the Boston Bruins (21-7-4, 46 points), the fourth seed in the East, but in the wee hours on Thursday, the Flames announced Iginla had been traded to the Penguins.

In their three recent trades, the Penguins gave up three prospects – Kenneth Agostino, Ben Hanowski and Joseph Morrow – and four drafts picks – this year’s first-rounder, second-rounder and fifth-rounder, plus their 2014 second-rounder.

Pittsburgh also acquired Dallas’ third-rounder in this spring’s draft in the trade for Brenden Morrow.

Crushed Ice: Derek Stepan at another level in Rangers 5-2 win over Flyers, Jesper Fast arrives in New York

PHILADELPHIA – Derek Stepan won’t talk about himself, but his one goal and three assists for a career-high four points spoke for him in Tuesday night’s 5-2 win over the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.

“I think Carl (Hagelin)’s speed alone really backs their defense off, and it gives time for a guy like Rick Nash to get a little space,” Stepan said postgame, crediting his linemates. “And when (Nash) gets space, he’s a special player. It was pretty easy to see tonight.”

Stepan was pressed to comment on his own strong performance, which has become routine these days for the budding young center.

“My job’s pretty easy with those two guys,” Stepan said with a smirk. “So I’m gonna stick with that.”

Stepan (10 goals, 15 assists, 25 points) has played four more games than Nash (12 goals, 16 assists, 28 points) due to the big forward’s early-season injury, but the 22-year-old center still only trails Nash by three points in offensive production atop the team’s leaderboard.

Coach John Tortorella openly now refers to Hagelin, Stepan and Nash as the Rangers’ “top line” – the team is 7-0-1 this season when the three of them start on a line together.

Tortorella also said Stepan can be a model for top Rangers forwards such as Brad Richards or Marian Gaborik who have struggled to play well or to sustain it when they do.

J.T. Miller likely to play as NY Rangers open three-game road trip vs. Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Arena

PHILADELPHIA – John Tortorella and J.T. Miller both said Tuesday morning that Miller (left wrist) is a game-time decision for Tuesday night’s game at Wells Fargo Center against the Flyers.

But Miller said an MRI on his wrist came back OK, that he feels better and that he’s ready to play if his number is called after sitting out Sunday night’s 3-2 shootout loss to the Capitals.

Tuesday’s projected lineup below isn’t official, especially since the Rangers didn’t show lines at their morning skate. It’s just what I am guessing will happen: I think Tortorella will scratch Taylor Pyatt and insert Miller as the third line right wing.

The Rangers (15-13-3, 33 points) are in eighth place in the Eastern Conference, just one point ahead of the Hurricanes, two points ahead of both the Capitals and Islanders, and three points ahead of the Sabres.

ZUCCARELLO AGREES TO TERMS ON CONTRACT TO REJOIN RANGERS

The Blueshirts are fighting for their playoff lives, having gone 2-4-1 in their past seven games, most recently with a 3-1 regulation loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday and a 3-2 shootout defeat to the Capitals on Sunday, both at the Garden.

Rangers forward Rick Nash and defenseman Anton Stralman, who both skipped Monday’s practice for a maintenance day, were on the ice and ready for Tuesday night’s game.

Nash said Capitals defenseman’s Karl Alzner’s slash across the wrist Sunday night has not lingered with him and that he’s feeling fine. Nash also said that to create more offense, he believes his line needs to do a better job in the defensive zone.

Rangers practice wrap: Notes on Anton Stralman, Michael Del Zotto, Chris Kreider as NY Rangers prepare to visit Flyers

J.T. Miller (left wrist), Rick Nash (maintenance day) and Anton Stralman (maintenance day) did not participate in the Rangers’ full Monday practice at Greenburgh, but there was no indication from that team at least that Nash’s or Stralman’s were anything serious.

Miller said on Saturday that the tendons in his wrist felt loose, but the good news Monday was that the Rangers did say the 21-year-old winger would travel on this week’s three-game road trip to Philadelphia, Ottawa and Montreal. So hopefully he won’t miss much more action than Sunday’s night 3-2 shootout loss to Washington at the Garden.

Miller injured the wrist during Thursday’s 3-1 home loss to the Florida Panthers, though he wasn’t sure exactly when.

ZUCCARELLO RETURNING TO RANGERS FOR STRETCH RUN

Nash took a hard slash across the wrist from Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner in Sunday night’s game. The slash happened on Nash’s power-play breakaway and earned the Rangers a two-man advantage on which Derek Stepan scored to tie the game, 2-2. But it is unknown whether Nash’s wrist was the cause of his absence on Monday.

Tortorella said Monday for the second time in the last week that he needs to see more out of Stralman and hasn’t gotten it.

Mats Zuccarello on verge of returning to NY Rangers once parties resolve logistics of releasing him from KHL to NHL

Mats Zuccarello is on the verge of returning to the Rangers, and his former teammates all responded similarly to that news at Monday’s practice in Greenburgh.

“That’d be great,” Blueshirts defenseman Ryan McDonagh said. “He’s a highly skilled player, familiar with the team and coaching staff, so it’s not going to take hopefully too long to adjust again. He’s played in the league and had some success in the league.

“Unfortunately (Zuccarello) had a couple injuries here (the last couple years),” McDonagh continued. “But he’s got a lot of skill and he’s a real positive guy in the locker room, too. Everybody gets along with him. So I think if the news is true, guys will be excited.”

ASHAM SCORES, RANGERS FALL TO CAPS, 3-2, IN SHOOTOUT; KREIDER MOVED UP; & MORE

Representatives for Zuccarello, the 25-year-old diminutive Norwegian playmaker, and the Rangers have the terms of a deal in place, but they are still working on the logistics of Zuccarello’s eligibility to return to the NHL from the KHL.

Zuccarello recently completed the first season of his two-year contract with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL in Russia. That club must release him before he can sign a contract with the Rangers, the only NHL team for which he ever has played.

The shifty, 5-7, 179-pound left wing played 52 games for the Rangers in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, but he was relegated to 73 games in the AHL during those two seasons and also missed time due to injury.
