5-on-3s a sticky situation for Rangers

Although the Rangers won last night in Toronto, they had to kill off a two-man advantage for the sixth time in 10 games this season, and that’s a trend that has their coach predictably and appropriately concerned.

“Terribly bothered by it, and how we get it again,” John Tortorella said, referring to Brandon Dubinsky’s slash late in the first period when Steve Eminger already was in the box for interference - a call that Tortorella agreed with, but on which he had a quibble with the rules that take away what he feels are good plays. “It’s another stick foul. We’ve killed off a lot. In 10 games, how many have we had? Six. Six 5-on-3s in 10 games, and I’ll bet you that four or five of those, the second foul was a stick foul. So, we talk about it. I’m not gonna sit there - I can’t bench a Marc Staal and a Dubinsky, but we have to have a little common sense with this here, and try to get this figured out, because it’s gonna bite us in a bad way, at a bad time.”

Here, in fact, are the penalty sequences that have led to 5-on-3s against the Rangers this season…

Boyle heats up with game-winning goal

Ryan Callahan is on fire, with a career-high four-game goal scoring streak (and a career high-tying six-game points streak) after making the first penalty shot of his career, and Henrik Lundqvist got his first shutout of the season tonight, so it might be easy to lose sight of the player who scored what turned out to be the game-winner in their 2-0 victory over the Maple Leafs here in Toronto.

Well, it’s really not that easy to lose sight of him, because he’s 6-7 and 244 pounds, but Brian Boyle struck again. In one sequence, the center showed so much of what he’s done for the Rangers this season, making a strong play to get the puck from Lundqvist’s post out of the zone, then following the action up the ice. As it happened, Brandon Prust came out of the penalty box while Boyle was making the clearance, and they wound up working a perfect give-and-go.

Grachev plays again, Boogaard in, White scratched

John Tortorella revealed in his pregame press conference a few minutes ago that Evgeny Grachev will make his second NHL start tonight here in Toronto, while Derek Boogaard also will be in the lineup as the Rangers take on the Maple Leafs. Todd White will be scratched, as will Michael Sauer, as Tortorella leaves his defense pairs intact. Henrik Lundqvist gets the start in goal for the Blueshirts, looking to both build on and rebound from last night’s performance against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Here’s what Tortorella had to say on a variety of topics…

On playing on the road after two straight home losses: “Home or away, we’re just trying to play consistent. We have struggled a bit at home. We’ll try to iron out some things tonight, try to play consistent.”

On Grachev: “He skated very well, finished his checks. His last shift of the night was when he turns it over a couple of times, one of them causes a two-on-one. But, again, he skated pretty well, was involved in the forecheck and we’ll give him another chance at it tonight.”

Rangers powerless to stop familiar finish

Where on Wednesday night John Tortorella was right when he said the Rangers “deserved to lose” to the Atlanta Thrashers, tonight they deserved a point against the Carolina Hurricanes - a point they did not get in a 4-3 loss at the Garden.

Erik Cole’s power-play goal with 3:59 left in the third period was the difference, the fourth time in the Rangers’ five losses this season that the Blueshirts’ opponent has snapped a tie on the man advantage in the third period or overtime. And the game-winner in Wednesday night’s game wound up being Dustin Byfuglien’s power-play goal in the third period.

“Again, we lose a game shorthanded late in the game,” said Henrik Lundqvist, who made 34 saves but saw his goals against average rise to 3.15. “It is always tough to lose that way. Like I said, we definitely created enough chances to win the game. We just came up short. It is very disappointing.”

Rangers try to take Stepan in right direction

Struggling for the first time as a professional, Derek Stepan has been shifted to a line with another struggling player, Alex Frolov, for the Rangers’ game tonight at the Garden against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Stepan has gone without a point in the last three games, with a minus-2 rating, and was benched for much of the third period of Wednesday’s game against the Atlanta Thrashers. That game also marked the first time that Stepan didn’t see any power play time, though the Rangers only had the man advantage once in their 6-4 defeat.

“Step is a guy that I think sees the ice, and I think is a good defensive player,” John Tortorella said. “He’s had some struggles, as we’ve talked about, and we’ve gone over quite a bit with him. I’m not sure if it works. I want to - we had quite a few things with Step yesterday, and I want to give him an opportunity there. We may make some changes along the way if there’s still a struggle with his game.”

Rangers ready for Hurricanes, Grachev to debut

Artem Anisimov and Michal Rozsival, both hurt on Wednesday night in the Rangers’ loss to the Atlanta Thrashers, worked out this morning at the Rangers’ practice rink in Greenburgh, and declared themselves ready to play tonight at the Garden against the Carolina Hurricanes.

“You have to test drive it,” Rozsival said. “After the first night, it calmed down, felt better. Today, it’s much better. 100 percent.”

Rozsival left Wednesday night’s game in the third period after hyperextending his knee. Anisimov, who took a shot off the outside of his right ankle, missed the entire third period, but an MRI yesterday came back clean.

Anisimov, Rozsival OK... but Boogaard ailing

The Rangers got good news on the injury front today, as the MRI on Artem Anisimov’s ankle came back clean and the center is expected to be back in the lineup tomorrow night at the Garden, centering Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan as the Rangers face the Carolina Hurricanes.

Also expected back on the ice for tomorrow’s game is Michal Rozsival, who left last night’s game in the third period after hyperextending his knee. Neither player practiced today.

Derek Boogaard did practice today, but left the ice in the middle of the session, and will be a game-time decision tomorrow. The Rangers’ enforcer cut his knuckle during his fight with the Bruins’ Shawn Thornton on Saturday night, and has developed an infection. The swelling has left Boogaard unable to hold his stick.

With Boogaard in doubt, the Rangers will recall Evgeny Grachev from Hartford of the AHL. After a disappointing training camp, Grachev has continued to struggle for the Wolf Pack, with one goal and one assist in nine games - but nobody in Hartford has been dazzling of late as the Rangers’ top farm team has scored a grand total of 17 goals in a 3-4-2 start.

Rangers get Thrashed as they let up

So, what happened to the Rangers’ vaunted work ethic? After three intense, grind-it-out wins had everyone on Broadway feeling good, the Blueshirts came out on fire tonight at the Garden, but then went up in smoke.

The result was a 6-4 loss to the Atlanta Thrashers in which the Rangers put on a performance that was a microcosm of their 2009-10 season: fast start, sluggish middle, furious comeback that wasn’t enough at the end.

After Bryan Little tied the game at 1 on a solo rush with 8:32 left in the first period, erasing the advantage that Ryan Callahan had provided 38 seconds in, it didn’t matter that up to that point, the Rangers had been dominating the game. And even though Sean Avery tied the game with his first goal of the season after Atlanta had taken a 2-1 lead on Evander Kane’s excellent effort, the Rangers couldn’t find the inspiration necessary to turn the game into a fourth consecutive victory.

Martin Biron gets start at the Garden tonight

Martin Biron will get the start in goal for the Rangers tonight as they face the Atlanta Thrashers and try to extend their winning streak to four games.

Henrik Lundqvist was in nets for the last two games, but Biron did start the Rangers’ winning streak with a stellar performance in Toronto, and the Rangers want to keep their focus on the long term, not just trying to keep this roll going with their No. 1 goalie.

“Our plan with (Biron) is trying to get him, each month, three or four starts,” John Tortorella said. “I thought he played really well in Toronto, and if (the next game) wasn’t Boston, where Hank has had tremendous numbers, maybe we even go back with him. I don’t know, but Hank had such great numbers against Boston, and Hank’s (always going to play) against Jersey, so went back-to-back with Hank, but we have to get Biron back in, so he’ll play tonight.”

Marian Gaborik 'moving in the right direction'

This Friday will mark two weeks since Marian Gaborik separated his shoulder on an illegal hit by Colby Armstrong of the Toronto Maple Leafs and was ruled out for two-to-four weeks.

As Gaborik has yet to skate, you can throw away any thoughts of two weeks, but the Rangers’ top scorer from last season is feeling positive about his rehabilitation after a platelet-rich plasma injection last Tuesday.

“I don’t know the timeframe when I’ll be back, but I feel good about it,” Gaborik said today. “I feel better, and I think it’s moving in the right direction.”

Gaborik has been doing off-ice work to maintain his fitness, while also doing exercises to restore range of motion to his shoulder.

“It’s not there all the way, but it’s getting there,” Gaborik said. “I’m doing some movement exercises just to control movement. I started with a little bit of weight and see how it feels. I’m happy with the progress.”
