Glen Sather chats about NY Rangers success, offseason needs, Chris Kreider, NHL GM meetings in Manhattan Wednesday

The Rangers’ sudden postseason elimination is still too close for Glen Sather, the Hall of Famer and Blueshirts general manager who has never gotten used to losing since guiding the Edmonton Oilers to five Stanley Cup titles from 1984 to 1990.

“We just got knocked out a couple days ago,” Sather told the Daily News Wednesday afternoon when asked if he had begun having conversations with fellow GMs about available talent at their Manhattan meetings. “It’s tough enough to go to bed at night and get to bed the next morning … I thought it was a great year. It’s just unfortunate it ended a little bit early, and I hate losing. So it takes me a long time to get over it. If you find a good loser, you find a loser.”

However, the 68-year-old president and GM is aware his team has needs. John Tortorella said Monday at breakup day in Greenburgh that the Rangers “have to work extremely hard to score goals.”

Standing on the fifth floor of the Westin Hotel in Times Square, Sather expertly dodged talk of acquiring a top scorer specifically but sounded as if he had his eye tilted toward free agency, rather than a trade.

“Well I would like to have a 60-goal scorer, I’d like to have a defenseman who can play 25 minutes and get 25 goals; I would like to have a goaltender that could be under one goal per game,” Sather said. “I mean those are wish-lists that every team in this league would like to have. Realistically, there are some people that are gonna be available. But they’re not available until July 1. So you really can’t talk about any of those guys.”

NY Rangers breakup day: Tortorella says goalscoring still a need, provides grim outlook on Michael Sauer, plus free-agent notes

rangers-breakup-blog.jpg

Rangers defenseman Michael Del Zotto revealed Monday at the team’s breakup day in Greenburgh that he suffered an injury in Game 6 against the Devils:

“A broken heart,” Del Zotto deadpanned, healthy otherwise. “That’s about it.”

Two and a half days after Adam Henrique ended the Rangers’ season, the loss was still fresh and painful in the minds of a team that knows it has improved but ultimately fell short of its ultimate goal.

The most noteworthy quote from anybody on the Rangers or their coaching staff came from coach John Tortorella, who flat-out said the Blueshirts have to look to add more goal-scoring in the summer – the same need this team faced last offseason before signing Brad Richards.

Crushed Ice: Rangers crushed by elimination to Devils, Mats Zuccarello reportedly agrees to two-year deal with KHL team

The changes to the Rangers roster reportedly began immediately following their crushing elimination from the Eastern Conference finals in Friday night’s Game 6, 3-2 overtime loss, but we're waiting on confirmation.

Norwegian winger Mats Zuccarello reportedly bolted from an organization that didn’t give him a fair shot this season for Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL, Russia’s pro league.Zuccarello agreed to a two-year deal as reported by IIHF communications director Szymon Szemberg and confirmed by the club’s web site. But that hasn't been confirmed by his agent.

"Its alot of (rumours) right now," Zuccarello tweeted on Saturday. "I dont know yet were im going to play next year."

He was sent to the AHL early this season despite having a terrific camp, was called up in March and injected life into the Rangers’ offense and power play, with two goals and an assist in six games. But then he broke his left wrist blocking a shot against Buffalo and never played again, though he did recover in time to be available for Games 5 and 6 of the Eastern Conference finals. Zuccarello, however, was a healthy scratch in both games.

John Tortorella says Rangers' mindset slipped at beginning of Devils series but believes team has regained it for Game 6

John Tortorella appears prepared to sit rookie defenseman Stu Bickel in favor of Steve Eminger in Game 6 on Friday night, as the Rangers look to stave off elimination from the Eastern Conference finals against the Devils in Newark.

That would likely be the Blueshirts’ only lineup change as far as personnel. Eminger would rejoin Michael Del Zotto, who was the first man on for Friday morning’s optional skate at the Garden, on the Rangers’ third defensive pair.

LEONARD: RANGERS SHOW TRUE BLUE WHEN IN THE RED

Devils coach Pete DeBoer said New Jersey will make no lineup changes, meaning Petr Sykora will remain a healthy scratch.

Here is the transcript of Tortorella’s morning press conference:

Question: Without asking you the lineup, are you considering any changes?

Tortorella: You’re asking me about the lineup.

Question: “No, I’m not asking specific names?”

Tortorella: “I don’t know what my lineup’s going to be.”

Question: “Do you think your team enjoys games like this, when it’s make or
break, do or die?”

Crushed Ice: Rangers-Devils Game 6 previews, Game 5 recaps, Mats Zuccarello available if needed, John Tortorella avoids '94 talk

So apologies to all for my absence from the blog postgame Wednesday and during Thursday’s practice. We ended up producing increased content in the regular section, leaving me writing both a game preview and column for today’s Daily News (Friday) and shooting out the practice updates on my Twitter account, @NYDNRangers.

I’ll link to all of our post-Game 5 stories on this post, as well as Friday’s stories leading in to Game 6 in Newark, where the Rangers must win to keep their season alive and force a Game 7 Sunday at the Garden.

During Thursday’s off-day practice, the most noteworthy piece of lineup news was that Norwegian winger Mats Zuccarello told a few of us he is ready and available if needed. I don’t expect him to play in Game 6, but Zuccarello (wrist) said he was ready for Game 5 as well and available Friday if needed.

Michael Del Zotto did not practice and presumably spent the day with his family mourning the recent death of his grandmother, though that was not confirmed by the team.

The most entertaining aspect of Thursday’s John Tortorella press conference was his exchange with a reporter on the 1994 Eastern Conference finals, which follows:

Reporter: “I know what your feeling is about ’94. All around the series outside there is a lot about ’94. Do you want your team to block that out?

Tortorella: “What is he talking about?”

Reporter:  “The ’94 Eastern finals.”

Tortorella: “I don’t even remem–“

Reporter: “You don’t know what I’m talking about?”

Tortorella: “No I don’t.”

Brandon Dubinsky replaces John Mitchell, Brandon Prust goes back in for Steve Eminger in Rangers Game 5 vs. Devils

Brandon Dubinsky replaced John Mitchell in the Rangers' lineup in Game 5 on Wednesday night, playing for the first time since injuring his right ankle in Game 7 of the first round against the Senators on April 26.

RANGERS FORWARDS ENCOURAGED BY 2ND PERIOD SURGE IN GAME 4

John Tortorella always shuffles his lines once games begin, but he had an interesting starting 12 on his four forward lines, including a reuniting of Dubinsky with his linemates from last season, captain Ryan Callahan and Artem Anisimov:

Chris Kreider-Brad Richards-Carl Hagelin
Brandon Dubinsky-Artem Anisimov-Ryan Callahan
Ruslan Fedotenko-Derek Stepan-Marian Gaborik
Mike Rupp-Brian Boyle-Brandon Prust

As reported earlier, Brandon Prust also re-entered the lineup after serving a one-game suspension for elbowing Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov in the head in Game 3. He replaced defenseman Steve Eminger, who played two straight games on the third defensive pair and blocked four shots with two shots on goal of his own, but Tortorella still opted for rookie Stu Bickel in Game 5 over Eminger.

The defensive pairs, then, reset to the playoff norm:

Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi
Marc Staal-Anton Stralman
Michael Del Zotto-Stu Bickel

And if you need to know who's in goal ... welcome to the blog!

Brandon Dubinsky likely to play in Game 5 for Rangers, Brandon Prust goes in, Steve Eminger out, probably John Mitchell, too

Brandon Dubinsky appears poised to reenter the Rangers lineup in Game 5 against the Devils Wednesday night, which would mark the winger’s first appearance since injuring his right ankle in Game 7 of the team’s first round series against Ottawa on April 26.

Fourth-line center John Mitchell remained on the ice long after the optional morning skate at the Garden with the regular scratches – including Mats Zuccarello – so Mitchell will likely come out of the lineup to make room for Dubinsky. Zuccarello, who has rehabbed a broken left wrist, is not expected to play.

The Rangers’ second lineup change will be defenseman Steve Eminger sitting to make room for winger Brandon Prust, who sat out Game 4 to serve his one-game suspension for elbowing Anton Volchenkov in the head.

“We need something to happen for ourselves,” Tortorella said when asked if he has to shake something up with his forwards, without going into specifics. “We’ll try different things, I’ll give you that. But it’s still a matter of just getting it done. At least that’s the way I feel about it.”

Tortorella provided insightful answers during his morning press conference, the latest in a string of media sessions that have seen the Rangers coach much more cooperative and informative. See the transcript, along with links to Wednesday's Daily News preview coverage of the Blueshirts' pivotal Game 5 against the Devils with the Eastern Conference finals tied at two games apiece:

Stu Bickel expected to replace suspended Brandon Prust in NY Rangers lineup for Game 4, Brandon Dubinsky 'getting better'

All indications from the Rangers’ morning skate at the Garden are that Stu Bickel will be replacing the suspended Brandon Prust as a fourth-line winger for Game 4 in Newark on Monday night.

Brandon Dubinsky (right ankle injury) was on the ice for the Blueshirts’ optional pregame skate and stayed on late after with Prust and backup goaltender Martin Biron. Dubinsky looked surprisingly sturdy on his skates and then told reporters his ankle is “getting better,” but confirmed in a humorous exchange that he will not be in the lineup for Game 4.

Asked if he could provide a percentage of how healthy he is, Dubinsky said: “This team doesn’t do percentages. I’m not sure if you’ve talked to Torts or not, but it’s usually a yes or a no, and tonight it’s a no. So we’ll keep going, keep working on my conditioning, and it’ll keep feeling better and hopefully we’ll get to a place where I can be in the lineup.”

The media had spoken with Torts, John Tortorella, minutes earlier, and the coach had turned away three questions about his lineup. Earlier, Devils coach Pete DeBoer had announced that Devils 35-year-old second-line winger Petr Sykora will sit in favor of 21-year-old forward Jacob Josefson, who broke his wrist on April 3 against the Islanders and has not played since.

VIDEOS, TRANSCRIPTS: Rangers defend Brandon Prust, take issue with hits by Devils’ Dainius Zubrus, Zach Parise

Remember this John Tortorella quote?

May 13, 2012: “You guys can make your stories about the Devils-Rangers, and I know you’re gonna do it in the next couple weeks — don’t include me in it.”

Well, all it took was Devils coach Pete DeBoer saying Rangers winger Brandon Prust was “head-hunting” Jersey defenseman Anton Volchenkov in Game 3 for Tortorella to jump right back into the headlines with a few beefs of his own.

Here, you’ll find full transcripts from Sunday’s optional practice of interviews with Tortorella, Prust, Brian Boyle, Derek Stepan, Brad Richards and Marc Staal, plus videos of Prust’s hit and of the two Devils hits that Tortorella is livid over: Dainius Zubrus’ elbow to the face of Anton Stralman, and Zach Parise’s leaping check on Michael Del Zotto.

PRUST DOCKED ONE GAME FOR ELBOW

As far as Prust’s one-game suspension goes, here’s what I’ll say: when he elbowed Volchenkov, the first thing I thought was that it is exactly the type of elbow – out in the open, flying out of the body, touching nothing but the head – for which Brendan Shanahan and the NHL tend to suspend players.

Now if you compare this Chris Neil’s headshot on Brian Boyle in the first round, obviously Prust’s one-game suspension seems ridiculous. After all, Neil was running the opponent’s best offensive player in the series, hitting him directly in the head and ultimately concussed him and knocked him out for the rest of the series, which the Rangers won anyway.
