Rota sweeps small schools regional hoops titles

While the races in Regions II, III and IV look to go down to the wire as the regular basketball season winds down over the next three weeks, Rota’s boys and girls and SHAPE’s girls took care of business last weekend in Region I.

Rota’s boys went 6-0 Thursday-Saturday at Alconbury, sweeping to the “small-schools” version of the Region I crown contested by Alconbury, Brussels, Menwith Hill and Rota. Rota’s girls were a three-ball away from duplicating their boys’ performance at Alconbury, falling to Brussels 16-14 to finish the three-day marathon at 5-1.

Patch fends off Royals in star-studded showdown

Wrestlers in Europe don’t participate in dual meets, but Saturday’s four-team tournament at Vilseck was almost the same thing. With several placers from the 2011 European tournament squaring off, Patch edged Ramstein 264.5-243.5.  Since Vilseck and Hohenfels were a distant third and fourth, with 72 and 10 points, respectively, and never figured in the final outcome, the quadrangular meet evolved into the equivalent of a Patch-Ramstein dual.

The 2011 103-pound champion, Ross Wilson, got the Panthers started by pinning 2011 103-pound runner-up Ryan Goins of Ramstein in 1:27 on Saturday to win the 113-pound class. Wilson decked Goins in 3:31 last February in the 103-pound European final.

Ramstein grad Tarnowski swims to 3 records

Former Kaiserslautern Kingfish star Stephen Tarnowski, a sophomore at The College of New Jersey, set three school records last week, one of them fast enough to qualify him for the NCAA Division III championships in March in Indianapolis.

According to the college website, Tarnowski established his records on three consecutive days in a three-day meet which ended Sunday. His school-record time of 3:58.03 in the 400-meter individual medley was fast enough to qualify Tarnowski for the event at the national championships, scheduled for March 21-24 in Indianapolis.

Tarnowski, an honor graduate from Ramstein High School, also swam the 200 individual medley in 1:51.62 and the 200 backstroke in 1:51.50. Those times, too, were fastest ever swum by an athlete from the school, located in Ewing, N.J.

High schools plan boys’ holiday hoops tourney

Patch boys’ basketball coach Bill Lassetter has announced his school’s plan to conduct a 12-team pool-play followed by single-elimination boys’ basketball tournament Dec. 27-29.

In a Thursday newsletter, Lassetter said each team in the event, which is to be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, is guaranteed a minimum of four games.  The same officials and scorekeepers who work regular-season high school games will work the event, which is sanctioned by DODDS-Europe, but not sponsored by the school system. Participating teams therefore will be responsible for their own transportation and lodging expenses. Free billeting will be available, however.

2-time Europe champ accepts Citadel scholarship

Hollie Salvo, who won the DODDS-Europe golf championship as a freshman in 2008 and as a sophomore the following year, has accepted an offer of a full scholarship to play college golf for The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.

Salvo, whose senior season at Grissom High School in Huntsville, Ala., is scheduled to begin in March, signed with The Citadel after a visit to the school, according to her former coach at Wiesbaden, Jim Campbell.

“When she went for the visit, she told me she was thinking, ‘Citadel – no way,’ ” Campbell said recently. “But after the visit, she came back ready to sign. She loved the place.”
