With more than 16 years of service under our belt, it came as a huge surprise to find out we were finally getting stationed abroad!! I was more than excited, I was ecstatic!! We arrived in Germany Labor Day weekend a year ago not knowing much more than where we were staying for the next few days. We had a great sponsor. He took us to see our housing options, lent us a cell phone while we navigated the German cell phone market, and shuttled us around until my husband passed the driving exam. I, sorry to say, had to take it twice. But, once we hung up the last picture on the wall, I breathed a sigh of relief and made a list of all the fun things I wanted to accomplish over the next three years.
I know how it feels to get here, and not be able to decipher anything— from street signs to lunch menus. I met so many people in those first few days and they all offered suggestions on how to make a quick transition to European life. Honestly, I don’t think I heard most of it until all the boxes were in the dumpster and I knew where to get a really good cup of coffee.
